William felt his blood run cold as Thor's annoyance at being defied leaked through into his tone, the deity mentioning his ability to seize the Grace by force. Will's grip on the handgun in his waistband tightening -- it would have already been drawn if not for Ashley-May's calming touch at his arm. He doubted the bullets would faze an angry deity, but if it so much as distracted the god and gave Ash and Adelaide a chance to escape, it would be worth it. With any luck, it wouldn't be necessary.

Adelaide placed a hand on Ash's shoulder -- it was her choice, after all, and no one else's. "We're with you," she murmured.

Ashley-May glared at the audacity of the god before her, first threatening her that he could simply take the Grace from her, without a doubt he could, regardless of her or the child's well being, but then she was to submit and have faith in him! She narrowed her eyes at him, speaking as calmly as the Nephilim fueled hormones would allow. "To begin; yesterday you didn't like being compared to Thanatos, but yet here you are AGAIN, threatening me and my child!" She shook as she spoke, the hand that had been gently placed on Will's arm now clutched it in anger.

"And then you expect me to have faith in you! I spent the last twenty eight years of my life having blind faith in God, THE God, and where has He lead me? Here in a colony, His creation abandoned me, left to die because of an abomination I didn't know existed until two days ago. Die for a Sin I didn't know I was committing! I spent my life in prayer and received nothing for it, I won't be believing, praying or having faith in anything but me and mine going forward. You're never getting my child's Grace." Ashley-May had long since left sense behind, only days ago she was chastising Mackenzie for doing just this very thing to Thanatos.

Mackenzie raced back towards the clinic, dreading and thankful the godly presence was still there, however as she pulled up in front she became aware of another presence; something not quite god-like but similar, within the Clinic near the god. She cursed as she stepped out of the car, laptop in hand, and dashed inside. Ruth was once more attempting to waylay her, turn her around; Mac figured the woman thought because she left she wouldn't come back, but she easily dodged the older woman and raced down the hall.

She skidded into Ashley-Mays room in time to hear her final words to the god; one Mackenzie had not met yet, and she winced internally. She came into the room, moving cautiously; there were things she had learned in New York, wards that could easily displace a gods presence for the short-term, but she wanted to avoid pissing off this god any more than he likely already was. "Alright there preggers." She said slipping between Will and Ash, her back to the unknown deity. At this close proximity she could sense the other god-like entity was the Nephilim itself; and the fact that she could sense it made her worry. "I think that's enough for one day. How about we revisit this topic later, yeah? We have work to do, and months before the Grace needs to go."

Thor sighed, he'd grown annoyed at having a gun pointed at him. He lifted his hand and opened his hand so that his palm faced the ceiling, he then proceeded to snap his fingers, apporting the gun from the man's grip to his open hand. He gripped it and studied it for a few seconds, then gently laid it down on a nearby table, saying "I assure you that isn't necessary, the only thing you'll accomplish with it is startling everyone else here. If my aim was to hurt or to kill you, I'd have done so already."

He then turned back to Ash, annoyance was visible in his eyes, his voice was calm but stern, like a parent chastising a child "I've never tried to force you to believe in me, I offered my help, help you could, as you are doing now, simply decline. And that wasn't a threat, it was a fact. If I had threatened you, you would have noticed it, oh and if I had been Thanatos, this could have turned into an ugly situation. Don't confuse me with your god, I've always held up my end of a bargain, I offered you a way out from an almost impossible situation, yet you persist in treating me like a monster. Very well, I shan't help you, but I suggest you don't speak like this to another god, many wouldn't suffer it."

He then turned to the woman who had entered the room "That won't be necessary, we're done here.", he then turned around and started walking out from the room, he needed to talk to Brendan if they wanted the Leviathan that Thor had captured. His kin already had enough of it's blood.

William was getting tired of divine beings stealing his gun, though at least the first time it had saved his life. This time it merely frustrated him. He had been surprised by the fierceness in Ashley-May's voice as she openly defied Thor. He was glad for her own sake when Mackenzie arrived, calming her down. Adelaide, for her part, hadn't expected the massive flux of emotional energy flowing from the woman as she spoke. Once again, she could feel that subtle, almost alien influence of the Nephilim that amplified her passion hundredfold. It was somewhere between serene and uncomfortable to experience for her "sixth sense", like a dazzling light show that pleases the eye but also forces one to squint lest they be temporarily blinded.

As Thor left Will relaxed, tension draining from his muscles as he walked over to reclaim the pistol the deity had laid down, watching the door until he was sure the god had left. He turned to look at Adelaide and the woman met his gaze, nodding in silent confirmation. Returning the pistol to its holster, he sighed. "It never stops with these gods, does it?" He turned to look at Mackenzie. "You think we'll have anything to worry about from that one in the future?" The god had seemed sincere enough in leaving them be, but he didn't want to take any chances where Ash's safety was concerned and he was wondering if Mac was privy to any information about the new deity thanks to her connection to Hypnos.

Ashley-May glared defiantly at the god as walked from the room, despite Mac and her soothing presence Ash was sick and tired of being jerked around by the gods, she was done playing their games and she finally felt like she had the power to prevent it. With him gone she glance to Will as he questioned Mackenzie on the likely hood him returning. "That one was Thor, and he scared me senseless yesterday when he popped in on me and Eli. He thought it would be alright then to threaten, "state the fact" that he could just take the Grace as he pleased, and then told me I had four months to live." She could see Mac's wary look, but continued. "I don't think he will be, heck, I don't event think he can take it from me. I almost want to call his bluff."

Mackenzie watched Ash as she went on, the Nephilim's Grace fueling her, she nudged her friend towards the bed gently, and was happy when she obliged. "Ash, " Mac said calmly, far softer than her typical voice. "So you know I'm an Oracle and all, right?" She smiled, bringing the blankets up over Ash, tucking her in so to speak. "And I can detect god and angel like beings. Well baby-Ash is howling a storm in my skull right now." She had described to Ash what it felt like to be near a god or angel once becoming an Oracle, like an itch in the back of your mind you can never get rid of. The riled Nephilim was a pounding headache at this point. "So maybe you should just relax, and take a nap and calm down, alright?"

Ash looked less than thrilled, first at being spoken too like a coddled child then again when Mac explained why she was acting the way she was. "Sorry." She said quietly. "I can't help it. My emotions are all over the place."

"Sorry. I can't help it. My emotions are all over the place."

Adelaide had raised a hand to her head, rubbing her temples as Ashley-May slowly reigned in her emotions. "I can tell," she said, but there was no malice in her voice as she smiled. "It's not just normal pregnancy hormones -- the Nephilim is amplifying everything you feel," she said, before shrugging. "I've never seen anything like it."

William stepped forward to pull Ash's blanket up around her with a wan smile. "I've got a meeting with Chase before long. I don't want you going after Alison without me," he said, turning to look at Mackenzie and then Adelaide in turn. "Someone should bring Eli up to speed... and I'd feel safer if he and Ash were together when the rest of us go looking."

Ashley-May flushed slightly as Will suggested that she and Eli remain together while the rest were busy. Mackenzie was handing her the requested laptop, "That might not go as well as you'd like." She stated carefully, biting her lip as she powered on the device. "Nurse Ratchet already caught me in his bed today; she wasn't impressed." She didn't make eye contact with anyone in the room with her however Mac smacked her leg laughing.

"Wow, I just, wow." Mackenzie continued to laugh, "No wonder she was so angry when I came in here in bed with you."

Ash certainly didn't find Mac laughter at her expense funny, so she turned her attention to Will, "That reminds me, you were about to explain how Mac slept through the night without night terrors and without gods, alcohol or the car." She grinned devilishly, at this Mac even turned to look at Will expectantly, honestly wondering what they had been talking about before she left.

William's expression went blank as Ashley-May said -- with uncharacteristic awkwardness -- that Ruth had found her in Elijah's bed. He turned to look at Adelaide, the two of them trading bemused glances as the witch shrugged. Will knew that the two of them had grown "close", but... not that close. Mackenzie's gleeful reaction put a smile on his face -- he was glad to give Ash a taste of her own medicine after the incident in the living room. Ash, as it happened, had other ideas. She clearly hadn't forgotten about the subject of their previous discussion prior to Thor's arrival and was now turning the tables.

Adelaide now turned her smile on William, giving him an expectant glance. The content of the discussion hit a little close to home, true, but the minor discomfort was more than worth it for the chance to see Will blush.

Will, glancing between each of the three women in turn, suddenly felt like a cornered animal. He could feel the heat in his face returning. He did the only thing he could. "You should ask her," he said quietly, turning to look at Mackenzie with a half-apologetic smirk on his face.

Ashley-May should have guessed Will would pass the buck, she rolled her eyes and started logging into the systems she needed to in order to track down Alison's cell phone. She knew, if caught, it would be hefty fine and possible jail time, but at this point she was carrying an angelic time bomb within her; jail wouldn't be an issue for long.

Mackenzie arched a delicate eyebrow as William attempted to drag her into the oddly awkward conversation as a buffer to Ashley-May's prying. Lips parted as she as about to announce the first thing to mine but her dark eyes drifted to Adelaide and she suddenly recalled who the woman was. She inhaled a moment before looking down to Ashley-May satisfied. "I wouldn't say there was no use of gods or alcohol last night, but for certain The Beast has lost its name to something else."

Ashley-May turned wide eyed from the computer screen to look at Mackenzie's satisfied expression. All she could do for several seconds of awkward silence before laughing quietly. "Alright, note to future self: don't ask." She turned down to the keyboard and entered Alison's cell phone, waiting for the system to ping it back to her. It came back almost immediately, which meant it was not far but pulling up the coordinates on a map brought a frown to her lips. "She's here, well sort of. Outside of Vitae, just down the road?" She turned the laptop for Will to view: an electronic version of a map would just annoy Mac. "There hasn't been any use on it, no out going calls since she called the Clinic yesterday to call off sick."

William nearly choked when he heard Mackenzie's response, the look of shock on his face slowly giving way to a betrayed glare as he turned to look at Mackenzie. He wasn't the least bit surprised to see a smug, self-satisfied expression on her face. He was equally worried about how Adelaide would respond to their "banter", particularly when he turned to see the woman's head tilted down as she hid her face behind one hand, the other arm crossed over her chest which was heaving. It took a moment for him to realize that his ex was laughing at his expense and doing a terrible job of hiding the fact.

He was relieved when Ashley-May spoke up, as much for the change of subject as the idea of being able to track down Alison. William stepped forward to examine the screen more closely, noting the coordinates though seeing the map and the apparent proximity to Vitae he doubted it would be necessary.

"I don't like it," Adelaide said, biting her lip. "It seems too... neat. It could very well be a trap. If you let me put together the materials for a tracking spell to double check..."

Will shook his head briskly. "No time. We don't know how much of a window we'll have before she's in the wind forever. We'll just have to be careful." He turned to look at Mackenzie. "You up for it?" he asked.

It had been several days since Solomon had been outside of the Clinic since his last excursion. Thanks to good food and plenty of bed rest the Man of Letters could now manage to walk unassisted but that was about it. He could dress himself and walk about, but even jogging was a little much for him. That didn't stop him from attempting to do some work outs in the morning to loosen his body up. The colony was hard at work trying to find somewhere to put Solomon, but for the time being he was still stuck in the Clinic. Attempting to get as much exercise as he could stand Solomon had made it a habit to pace around the Clinic, and one such round of walking he felt his dagger start to almost vibrate. Pan's voice then echoed in his head. Something about an Oracle and the girl he had interrogated him when he first got here. Apparently she was nearby. Curious as to what the god was going on about Solomon made his way over.

Mackenzie had cast a very brief glance at map and where they all seemed interested. Give her a map - a real one and drop her off in the woods, she'd beat anyone back to civilization, but so far as she was concerned GPS maps were trash. Will seemed to have recovered, enough, from her rather blunt comment but she nodded, pulling the key to the Beast from her jacket pocket and holding them out to him. "Figure if we're going to be driving anywhere, and I'm not panicked Ash has been hurt, its safer for you to drive any distances." She turned and smiled to Adelaide. "I'm kind of surprised we made it to the REC center this morning without Hypnos delivering a vision while I was driving."

She turned her attention to Ash, "Can we trust that you'll go in and stay with Eli?" Mac watched as Ashley-May nodded and rolled her eyes. "Great." As she was headed for the door she spotted Solomon standing near by. "Nope!" She called out to him. "Not happening. For one, " She pointed to Ash still in bed. "She's slept with enough people today. Two, a deity made it pretty clear that I'm not allowed to converse with you upon threat of death. So you can move along, sir."

Will nodded, taking the keys from Mackenzie. He trusted Mac to drive, but she had a point regardless. Adelaide raised her eyebrows in surprise at Mackenzie's comment. Her own talents could be a distraction at times, but by the sound of it she was better off than an Oracle in that regard.

William turned with surprise to see Mackenzie shooing off the man she had been questioning in his hospital bed earlier. With all that had happened, he'd nearly forgotten about the figure and whatever his connection might be to the gods that had descended on Vitae. He didn't seem to be a threat, though Will was nonetheless nervous about allowing him near Ashley-May and Elijah while they were away. He saw Adelaide packing up her duffel and slinging it over her shoulder out of the corner of his eye. He was opening his mouth to speak when the woman cut him off, apparently having sensed his intentions. "Don't. I'm coming with you. My kind, my responsibility. I'll take my car."

Will continued arguing with her, but decided against it. He knew how much Addy despised Borrowers and their demonic string-pullers. He turned to look at Ash. "You and Elijah stick together... and don't you kids make me regret leaving you without a chaperone," he said with faux stoicism. Adelaide rolled her eyes, pushing past the man to get to the corridor. William followed after her, stopping at Mackenzie's side as he looked the man from earlier up and down as if silently assessing the danger he might pose.

Solomon was quite confused. First the woman interrogated him and now she was literally trying to shoo him away like some dog with rabies. " Look, I don't know what your talking about, but considering you interrogated me I figured I'm allowed to do the same thing. I don't know what your circumstances are with a deity, and I don't really care. What I'm concerned about is a certain goat calling you an Oracle." Solomon said as he moved out of their way.

I'm sure it'll work. Chase replied to Will via text, deciding that he should get a head start so that he didn't have to sprint the whole way there. Doing that last time had left him rather spent and sore afterwards. The man made his way down the steps, careful not to stomp with the potentially sleeping Alpha just inside. Once at the bottom he turned and moved around to the back of the cabin, only pausing at the back stairs.

Chase took one quick glance around at the outdoor area before he started undressing, placing the garments on the railing of the back steps and making his way down them to shift. Once in his other form the Wolf shook it's fur, had a momentary stretch, then padded around the cabin and through the camp. Chase kept along the path that many used, passing by other Werewolves in either from along the way giving a small snort as a greeting in response to any that offered one of their own until he reached the edge of the camp where he picked up the pace to a brisk jog.

" Stop." Jordan said to the God and stared at the Golden Pavilion "We are here.... the prison of Da Ji. When did you say your friend was arriving? The sooner we break her out the sooner we can leave before the Men of Letters show up and attempt to imprison us as well~" Jordan gestured to Hypnos and Himiko to follow him inside of the building with the tour group. Jordan had always known where Da Ji was, she was his daughter, he also knew it was a trap for him and he had been waiting to spring it. No Kitsune could touch the seal without being sucked into it... but a pagan god? That clearly wasn't something the men of letters were worried about in 1950 Japan.

Mackenzie followed Adelaide and William out of the room into the hall, leaving Ash behind in bed, she paused at Solomon continued to address her; not many would bother after she dismissed them, certainly not after she had done so so candidly. He was mentioning the goat, which she could only presume was Pan inside the night and that the god was telling him what she was. She paused briefly to regard him slowly before speaking again. “It doesn’t matter what I am, certainly not to you. I have work to do none of which involves you.” She turned and took a few steps away before calling over her shoulder. “You should learn that when someone tells you no, it means no. Around this place pushing people can be dangerous.” There wasn’t a chance she was going to let him or anyone else distract her from the mission at hand Alison was a connection to Mur they needed to catch up, and the potential murderer to Joe. She wanted to have this bundled up before they went to see Chase.

Ruth came around the corner after witnessing Adelaide and William first leave. She paused, giving Mackenzie a sour look until she was gone before redirecting her attention to Solomon. “Mr. David.” She said with a pleasant smile, rather uncharacteristic of her. “I’ve just got word that Councilmen Jack has found a bed for you in the barracks. You’ll be able to move right in there after this morning meeting. The Council is asking everyone that is able to attend, must be important.”

Ashley-May rolled her eyes but nodded to William as he reaffirmed that she would, in fact, go and stay with Elijah. She honestly didn’t believe that anything inside the colony would be able to get her, other than a god really, and even Elijah couldn’t prevent that. She threw back the blankets both Mac and Will had just tucked her into and collected her laptop under her arm. With Adelaide and Will distracting Ruth as they exited she snuck back down the hall to Eli’s room. She quietly cracked the door open and slipped inside, not wanting to wake the man. Upon closing the door behind her she turned and blinked, seeing him lying awake in bed. “Everything alright?” She would have thought for certain that Julie would have given him another dose of pain meds to let him rest. “Did you have more night terrors?”

William glanced over his shoulder to make sure that Mac didn't need any help in running off the enigmatic man that had approached. Making his way outside to the truck alongside Adelaide, he took a moment to hastily throw open the back doors, unzipping the black duffel bag there to remove the short-barreled shotgun inside. Searching through the assorted cardboard boxes of ammunition, he found the one looked for -- a piece of red electrical tape across the top of it, on which "IRON BK" was scrawled in his handwriting. He had taken on Borrower Witches twice since becoming a Hunter after Afghanistan. Once had been one of his first jobs with Shaw, eradicating a small coven practicing human sacrifice in a small coastal town in Maine in an unsuccessful attempt to create a Devil's Gate. The second had been the same job where he'd met Adelaide, with he and Elijah helping her to stop a bokor in New Orleans from selling his black-magic-for-hire services to criminal syndicates in the city.

In either case, he had learned the best way to deal with Witches' spells was to prevent them from casting them in the first place. The only surefire way that he found of doing that short of killing them outright was wrought iron; physical contact with it drained their ability to use most abilities, whether that physical contact consisted of iron chains wrapped around their body... or in this case, a load of iron-plated buckshot in their gut. After what Alison had likely done to Joe, the second option was starting to sound better and better. He looked up to see Adelaide shoot him a warning glare, as if sensing his thoughts and silently reminding him that they needed the information the nurse could provide. With that in mind, he tucked a pair of handcuffs into his back pocket that he and Elijah typically used for restraining a demon-possessed host for an exorcism. With the demon blade Mackenzie had given him sheathed at his side, he offered Adelaide a revolver.

After a moment's hesitation, she took it, placing it in her bag. "I'll meet you at the gates," she said, turning to make her way towards the Clinic house and her car parked behind it. Will nodded, locking up the truck and heading over to the Beast, climbing into the driver's seat as he fired it up just in time to see Mackenzie exiting the Clinic. As she drew close, he asked, "You armed? I've got spares if you need them."

upload_2017-7-26_19-39-47.jpeg
Elijah turned to see Ashley-May entering his room, offering her a meager smile. The nightmare was still fresh in his mind, though he didn't have the heart to dismiss her. In any case, he could tell something was going on based on what little he had heard outside... which wasn't much, save for just enough to get him curious. "You could say that," he said quietly, gesturing to the seat by his bed. "Anything going on out there I should know about?"

Mackenzie's eyebrows raised as Will made the suggestion she was not prepared to take on a fight, a slow smile crept across her lips as she slipped into the passenger side of the car. She leaned in through the window to kiss his lips gently whilst reaching behind him and the seat. Leaning back she withdrew a shotgun of her own; it certainly wasn't pretty, nor military grade by far, but it certainly got the job done. "Well enough, plus the Demon blade and Iron knife, I'd say I'm good." She gave him a playful wink as she leaned forward on the bench and reached beneath, dragging forward an old wooden crate and flipping the lid open. Within she searched through the clear plastic shell containers until she found the green shells. She pocketed them and pushed the crate and remainder back beneath the bench.

She watched Adelaide pull away in her own car as she leaded the barrel and locked it closed. "What are the odds this is going to end well, you think?" She asked, leaning her head back against the bench with a fake pout. "We didn't even get to have breakfast in bed."

GxQZJgl.jpg

Ashley-May noted the lack of enthusiasm in Elijah's tone and expression, she paused for a time before accepting his offer of the chair. She wouldn't stay long, just enough to fill him in then she would leave him alone. "Witch hunt." She said simply, "The nurse that I covered for last night hasn't answered her phone since. Will and Addy went to her apartment and found out she's a Borrow so them and Mac are headed out to find her. They think she might be connected to Joe's death." She didn't want to pry but she knew something was bothering the typically well humored ginger hunter. "Will asked me to check in on you, give you and update. You need anything from me? Before I head out?"

William closed his eyes, returning Mackenzie's kiss reflexively. Opening his eyes, he wasn't particularly surprised to see the shotgun clutched in her hands. He smiled, shaking his head. He should have known better than to question her preparedness when it came to the weaponry she had stashed in the Beast. He followed Adelaide's trail toward the gate, watching with approval out of the corner of his eye as Mac casually loaded the weapon borne of years of experience. At her question, he shook his head. "I don't know. Not good. Best case scenario, she comes peacefully. I'll slap the irons on her and we get answers out of her, one way or another. Worst case, we put iron through her and hope she can tell us something useful before she bleeds out," he said, his tone dark and not the least bit joking as he remembered the scene in the Rec Center storeroom and the despondent look on Ash's face when they found her.

He sighed, forcing himself into a better frame of mind as Mac's second comment clicked. "I'll find some way to make it up to you," he said with a smirk. "I owe you that much for last night, even after that comment back at the Clinic... though I suppose I should take that as a compliment."

He saw Adelaide waiting ahead at the gate, speaking to the guard. It wasn't Bart -- Will assumed he was with Brendan and the others preparing to gather at the Rec Center. As the guard looked up to see the Beast and Will at the helm, Hendrix gave him a wave. The man nodded, signaling for the gate to be opened, allowing Adelaide and him to roll through.

upload_2017-7-26_22-40-53.jpeg
Elijah's face was blank as he listened to Ashley-May fill him in. He knew Alison in passing -- she had stopped into his room a few times shortly after he was injured to check in on him. She had seemed kind enough. Normal enough. But that was growing to be an increasingly dangerous metric by which to judge anyone, he realized. To think that she had something to do with Joe's death...

He was shaken from his reverie by Ashley-May asking if he needed anything. Eli knew he might not get a better chance than this to go through with what he had in mind, even though his heart ached at the thought of what he had to say. Looking into Ash's eyes, he wanted to call it off -- tell her that he was fine, just had a bad dream. But as the nightmare played through his head, he knew it wouldn't be fair to her.

"Yes. I wanted to talk," Elijah began, slowly, trying and failing to hold eye contact with her. "Really talk. No more flirting, no more dancing around it. I..." he swallowed the lump in his throat, forcing himself to continue as he looked up at her. "I care about you, Ash. In a way I haven't for anyone in a long time. Maybe ever." He took a deep breath, "But this -- we -- can't happen. As much as I want it, it's not worth the price you'd have to pay. I meant what I said about doing everything in my power to keep you safe and find a way to extract the Grace from your child. Nothing's changed. But after that, you'll both have a chance at a normal life. I know that's what you want, Ash. More than that, it's what you deserve. With the gift from Mac... you'll be able to build a life for both of you."

He gave her a wan smile. "But I can't be by your side when you do. I'm not built for it. Maybe I never was. More than anything I wish that wasn't the case, but..." he shrugged, his falling to the bed as he went silent. "I'm sorry, but I'm not going to let myself drag you down."

dx0HE3H.jpg

"That was a compliment," She murmured after they passed the gate and were on their way down the road towards where Ash and pinged the map. "At least that's how it was meant." She smiled and shifted along the bench of the Beast to be along his side. "I was thinking of calling in that favor later, going to need a checkup, as it were." Dark eyes watched his intently. "I imagine I'm still paid up...?" She bit her lip a moment before reaching across the bench and retrieving her journal she had collected from the house. "Maybe later, in your down time Doc, you'll want to read this?" It still made her nervous to even consider giving it to him, but she trusted him to know who she was, all of her.

GxQZJgl.jpg

Ashley-May nodded as Elijah stated he wanted to really talk, and her smile grew and a flush came to her cheeks as he mentioned how much he cared for her. It soon vanished as he moved on, her heart sinking into a pit as she listened to Eli turn tail and run. She refused to look away from him, despite the tears rolling down her cheeks, she listened coolly and quietly as he explain, or felt he explained, why he didn't want to be with her, why it would simply be better for her to be alone... because that is what she wanted, of course.

"I'm sorry, but I'm not going to let myself drag you down."

She waited, expecting more, why wouldn't he continue to build up her feelings to tear them down, this seemed to be an on going theme with hunters -and angels, she had met in recent history. At the very least Mackenzie had never toyed with her, she had been honest from the first day they were together. When it was clear he was done making himself feel better she cleared her throat, hands smoothing the material along her thighs; a habit she knew she did when she was doing her best to control her emotions.

"While I appreciate your doing this for my best intention, Elijah Davenport, I'd appreciate it more if you didn't lie to me." She stood slowly, refusing to look away from him still, wrapping her arms around herself as she continued. "I've had enough of people like you, and Alaric, telling me what's best for me. I know what I want," She gave a sarcastic laugh, "Or at least I thought I had until I walked into this room just now. Don't pretend like you're doing me a favor in this, because you're not. You spent the better part of last night building me up to believe that I could be wanted by someone, despite being pregnant; that someone wouldn't care that it wasn't their own child. Your a coward, Eli, nothing more." She turned and headed for the door, pausing with her hand on the handle.

She spoke again, though this time facing away from him. "Thor came back to me today, told he he had the knowledge he needed to remove the Grace," She pulled the door open, "I declined his offer." She stepped out into the hallway, closing the door behind her. She knew Will wanted her to stay near Eli while they were away, for her safety and his, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. She turned and headed for the front door of the Clinic, Ruth made to protest her exit, but she ignored the older woman.

William smiled as Mackenzie sidled up alongside him, draping his arm across her shoulder as they had the day before. "More than paid up," he said, placing a kiss on her cheek as he kept one eye on the road. He watched her curiously from the corner of his eye as she reached over to retrieve something from behind the seat, presenting it to him somewhat anxiously. He knew instantly what it was: the journal she had mentioned at the cookout. She was giving it to him, trusting him to whatever secrets it might hold about who she was, where she came from. He knew nothing in those pages could change the way he felt about her, but all the same the level of trust she was placing in him made his heart swell.

He reached up with his free hand, gently running his fingers along her hand before taking the journal. "Thank you, Mac. If you're ready for me to read it, I will," he said quietly. "But you don't owe me anything. I'll understand if you want me to wait..."

Elijah had ended a lot of relationships over the years, been on one side or another of a romantic pink slip as it were. None of them had hurt nearly as much as seeing the look of betrayal in Ash's eyes as they bore into him. Not even leaving his family behind in Europe with the knowledge he'd never speak to any of them again had eviscerated his heart the way Ashley-May's vicious retort had... because she was right. He was a coward. He had allowed his feelings for her to blossom because he hadn't been strong enough put a stop to them early on. He had given her false hope instead of a friend she could count on. And now? Now he'd lost her -- maybe forever -- as a lover, certainly... and maybe as a friend, too.

He couldn't muster a single word in defense of himself, nor did he particularly want to try. He watched, silently, as she made her way to the door doing his best to maintain his composure and convince himself that he'd done the right thing even as a spike of regret shot through his core. "Thor came back to me today, told he he had the knowledge he needed to remove the Grace. I declined his offer."

Elijah's mouth opened to reply, but no sound came out. The noise of the door slamming shut behind her as she left was like a slap to the face. As her final words bounced around in his head he felt the anger rise up. Before he could stop himself, his hand was digging under his pillow to retrieve the dagger hidden there. He tore it from its sheath. "Goddamnit!" he yelled, hurling the blade end over end across the tiny room. It whipped through the air, burying itself into the opposite wall with a thunk.

He panted, pain flaring up in his abdomen from the sudden exertion, feeling the anger drain from him like water from a punctured container. It was replaced by a feeling of drained numbness that seemed to fill every inch of his body as he lay still in bed, staring at the blade in the wall.

In his mind, he watched a familiar house burn to cinders.

Mackenzie slowly shook her head. "It's fine, I want you to have it, I want at least one person in this world to know who I am. And I trust you." She smiled, leaning her head against his chest as her eyes turned to watch the road. Once more her pocket started to buzz, Ashley-Mays muffled instructions on how to answer the phone, this time Mac had no hesitation as she retrieved the device from her pocket and brought it to her ear. "Ash, are you alright?"

Immediately Mac knew something was wrong. Ash, sobbing on the other end started venting in a ramble about what had happened and Mac listened with only the occasional mhm or I'm sorry. Ashley-May told her everything: hoe she felt about Alaric abandoning her without a word - that she had failed in some way and it was her fault, how she and Eli had been flirting the day before and she hadn't thought he was serious until this morning. She told Mac, in detail, about their shared dream and how much she had loved it, loved knowing that it could be a future where she was happy, where her heart was filled with love and then she told Mac what had just happened, Eli blaming her for him wanting out before it started.

Macs expression darkened but she kept her voice light. "I'm so sorry, Ash. I really am. As soon as I can I'll be home, okay? Are you at the house?"

"Yeah," Ash replied with a sniff as she let herself into the house. With Macs instructions she found the room with their belongings. "I'm just going to go yo bed, Mac. You don't have to come back. I just needed to tell someone. Thank you."

Ash hung up and Mac turned an angry glare to Will. Hand smacked his leg, then chest, tears in the corner of her eyes. "Elijah is a dead man."

William smiled as Mackenzie reaffirmed her trust for him, taking a moment to relax as she leaned against him. For a moment, all that was audible was the sound of the Beast's engine as they rolled down the road, only to be soon complemented by the sound of Ash's voice. He turned to look, confused, at Mac before pinpointing the source of the sound. He gave her an amused look as the recording of Ashley-May began to launch into a series of instructions on how to unlock the phone. Mackenzie answered and Will continued to watch the road, hearing the sound of sobbing from the other end.

At first, Will tensed up, thinking something serious had happened back at Vitae and was ready to swing the car around to go back. However, seeing that Mac wasn't distraught but instead doing her best to comfort Ash, he held off. He frowned upon hearing that Ashley-May had gone to the house rather than stay with Elijah, which could only mean...

His suspicions were confirmed as Mac gave him two solid smacks -- getting his undivided attention -- before making her remark. He didn't even try to calm her down or defend his partner. "Not if I get to him first," he muttered, knuckles tightening around the steering wheel. "What did he do?" he asked.
