Street Racing

When she's inside her car, she glances at the rooms on the top floor. Her heart is still thumping against her chest, like it's about to exit her bones. Tyrako is alive. He's fine. He's going to be all right. She bites her lower lip. She just doesn't know why she's feeling this way.

She fiddles with her phone the next morning, wondering if she should send a text to check whether Tyrako is all right.

Vanessa R.
me
Kelas is driving me home.

Tyrako answered through a text message on his phone while Kelas drove.

She jumps when she hears her phone beep. She immediately texts back.

Take care. Don't get hit this time.

We will. We'll be back in our house if you needed anything.

Tyrako answered and they arrived at their home. Tyrako was helped by Kelas into the house.

She rushes to her car and drives toward their house, hoping that they won't mind if she just crashes in.

As expected, she gets there within thirty minutes. She rocks on her heels for a few seconds before she finally knocks on the door.

Vanessa enters the house. It's cozy and warm, exactly like a home. She spots Tyrako sitting on the couch and quietly waves.

She hesitantly sits down next to him on the couch. She gingerly pats his knee. "Hey, you okay? Do you need more rest?"

"I'm fine. My head hurts... But i can bear it." Tyrako said. "This'd be a big problem for us through... I don't think i can race in the tournament..."

Right. The tournament. She's been so focused on wishing Tyrako would get better that she's completely forgot about the race. "Well, you have a crew, right? Why don't they take your place, instead?" She has no idea how it works, so she can't exactly give accurate suggestions, either.

"The crew only have you, Kelas and me..." Tyrako groaned. "Kelas can teach you most of my skills but you'll need to learn the rest yourself..."

What? Vanessa's heartbeat quickens in an overdrive. She's only learned the basics. She doesn't even know to race yet, so this may be a big problem. "How . . . But . . ." Don't get her wrong; she wants to race, but if she's only going to damage his smooth reputation, then . . . "Are you sure about this?"

"I'm sure... You have what needed to be a expert street racer." Tyrako nodded with a weak smile. "I'm out of the race, literally, until I can drive again."

"I guess I'll have to do my best, then." She looks down at her hands on her lap. Her bones are made for racing, driven by the need she has to get behind the wheel. Now that she has the perfect opportunity to have what she wants, will she really let it slip away? She suddenly has the urge to call Carter.

"If you needed a new car, we have some money to buy one and upgrade it." Tyrako said and Kelas brought out breakfast for him and Tyrako and also for Vanessa.

"Oh, I've been thinking about that," Vanessa says as Kelas carts in two plates. She smiles gratefully. "I'm not sure what would be a great car for street racing."

"Hmm, yeah, I could, but I don't think that'll fit for me." GTR is more of their lane, their pace. She'd feel awkward behind the wheel, like the car is made for rough edges, instead of her smooth stone. "I'm actually thinking of getting an Audi," she admits. Of course, she'd have to get help from Carter for that. An Audi is expensive, and with the one she's planning to buy, it's going to cost her her whole life savings.

"R8," she says immediately. She's been thinking about it for a while. Even if this is street racing, she's been living with super cars, more than anything. She'd feel more comfortable behind the wheel. "But . . . I wasn't sure if it's okay."
