I've realized I definitely need to rethink combat some more :^)

Does anyone have experience with roll20? I've heard good things about it but I don't know if it would be good for this context, and it's quite a lot to learn.
It basically just needs to be a tool where I can create a map (just a bunch of squares would do) and place characters on, then change their positions and have it saved.

HP tracking and stats would be a big bonus, especially if I can just invite you guys and you can do your own movements too, but I don't know if it works like that.
Always seemed like a live kind of thing where you use it during a session of a few hours.

Oh you don't have to, I can probably find someone that uses it regularly and could explain it. I've taken a look at it for about half an hour but it looks like it's just a tool to be used live in the moment while you're on a call with people.

If it just saves the battle map though, it would already be a huuuuge improvement on how i do things now (which is why this is taking so long :^))

I've always had terrible luck rolling for myself
Now I'm rolling for enemies and I am rolling these
I'm literally destroying myself

So, Hommet had 13 HP and just took 15 damage? Or am I misunderstanding?

Oh absolutely. He's a beefy man so I beefed him up a bit, but fate saw fit to have both arrows hit, and the damage I rolled for it was in total 1 point shy of the maximum amount. I never roll that high.

Yikes. But it seems you're making it so he is just unconscious. So I'm guessing important NPCs have player rules when it comes to death? (As in, normally NPCs just plain die when HP hits 0 or below, but players only die instantly if they go into negative HP equal to their max HP, and otherwise get the death saves)

Well in this case definitely yes. Don't get me wrong, the game isn't over if he should die, but it mostly just feels extremely anticlimactic to have him just eat dirt in the very first round of combat :p Might've kind of underestimated the potential damage.

Welp then, seems like time for May to get on the case with a little healing.

This is a big request, but could you guys hold your replies for Ehlarks action? I plan on doing something a bit wild, and it will likely require both of you to make dexterity checks. It'd be easier to manage that after the action is done, rather than in another series of responses! Of course the option is up to both of you!

Well, it would seem that Psychie and I are both toast. I'm not going to be able to take him out in one round, and he's in melee range of me, so if I were to try and withdraw, I'd have to leave Sasha's body behind or trigger an attack of opportunity as I pull back, and he's doing enough in the way of damage that I can't take a hit.

No worries, I can wait! I have my last test tomorrow anyway.

Well they are Orcs, albeit apparently already having been injured from some other combat. Don't we have other OC's headed y'all's way?

I think that the injuries that they had suffered was from the clash between the eight guards, not any other NPCs out there.

Wasn't the Head Orc already wounded before combat broke out? If the guards had fought them already, there wouldn't have discussion like there was.

I don't think so. Not to mention that he had 55 hit points before the fight broke out, and his merry band of men each have 15. I have seven. We are outnumbered, several members of the guard are already dead, and one PC has fallen into negative hit points. Not a good scene to live through.

The older man cut himself off though, as he saw something he didn't expect waiting for them across the bridge. Over a dozen tall, fearsome looking Orcs stood spread across the area in front of the drawbridge. In the front line was the meanest looking of them all, tall, muscular, with dark green skin but dark crimson blood all over him. He had multiple puncture wounds and even some arrows still in his body, but by no means did he look weak.

This is what I'm referring too.

No, don't get me wrong. I don't envy your position, it's definitely not advantageous and you're up against hard forces. All I was initially trying to ask though was that, aren't there two other members of our campaign traveling with Wood Elves headed to your location? I feel like that was designed to be reinforcement.

Well, he may have been hurt prior to our encounter, but at the start of the fight, Ellya posted this:

Orcs (Reddish brown):
AC 13
HP 15
Saving throws:
STR +3
DEX +1
CON +3
WIS -2
INT +0
CHA +0

War Chief (Red):
AC 16
HP 55
Saving throws:
STR +6
DEX +1
CON +6
WIS +2
INT +0
CHA +3
He's since taken multiple shots from Sasha and a high damage Magic Missile, and is still up.

Sure thing, waiting's easy enough. Curious to see what you have planned-

you're both very close to it but with the quick verbal warning i'd say just a 10

if it's a fail, i'll say roll 1d6 bludgeoning damage, and a DC 8 athletics or acrobatics check to save yourself from going prone
