I don't get what our role for House Artemis is. We can't be an "air wing." We're just too small. If the Machine controls the air, then us flying around at any altitude is a death sentence, right? This is probably one small reason why none of us took the very cool Archangel O.C.C.? So now what?
So it's not as bad at it seems.
When the Griffin War Mounts were first introduced on the bat-tlefield, the devastation they wreaked on the Sky Fighters was unbelievable. No one expected them to be so effective. N.E.X.U.S. has adapted her strategies somewhat to contend with these War Mounts, but even these adjustments have benefited the Resistance. When a Griffin is spotted among the assault force, Sky Fighters will tend to fire from outside of their maximum effec-tive range rather than risk getting grabbed during a close-range strafing run. Even when they are not chasing these mounts down directly, the Griffins still seem impossibly skilled at figuring out their approach vector and intercepting them.Another new Sky Fighter tactic that has backfired somewhat is their tendency to come to a dead stop in mid-air to avoid the Griffin’s grappling attempt. Sky Fighters can go from full speed to a hover in seconds, which even the Griffin has difficulty matching. This may sometimes prevent the Griffin from grabbing its prey, but the War Mount can still use its plasma breath (plus any additional weapon enhancements mounted on it and the rider) to shoot down the now stationary target. In addition, Archangels generally fly support for the Griffin War Mounts, so they also get a free shot at any Sky Fighters that are foolish enough to come to a stop. The Machine still has numerical superiority on her side, but the Resistance sees the introduction of the Griffin War Mount as an important step in taking back the skies
My reading of the situation is that Nexus can win any ariel battle they want. However the cost of producing a robotic fighter craft might actually be higher than the cost of the presumably self replicating griffons. It takes a lot of very fine machinery to make a fighter jet and a lot of different parts, but biology is just feed it.
So while Nexus can win the skies, with the griffon being so dangerous to the sky fighters, it's also a cost trade off. I doubt I could take 10 sky fighters. Would Nexus trade 8 sky fighters for me? Because I'm killing a lot of them before I go down. Then there is the problem that a prolongated sky battle might see a draco come out or more arch angels or just human capable of shooting down the planes.
All of which (except the draco) are vastly "Cheaper" than the plane. (And the Draco will trade 100-1 with sky fighters).
So while Nexus has massively more industrial capacity, the human supply lines are vastly less vulnerable and the forces trade far far more efficiently. So Nexus can't afford to send 10 sky fighters at every random little flying group, it has to target important things and rely upon ground forces for securing most areas.
