The Velveteen Rabbit
A Fluffy Bun
"Of course you can!"
Aiko responded with a small smile, conveying a slight look of amusement on her pale face. She'd been given nicknames in the past, but 'Ai' was a first. She quite liked it, in fact.
It's better than Percy's nickname for me... I don't think calling someone 'Grams' because of their abnormally white hair is appropriate.
She began chuckling softly at the thought, shaking her head. Aiko swiveled her cloudy gaze to look at Chloe, who asked why she didn't have a partner during her first year in the EAT class; a question she had been asked many times, even by her own partner, Elam. It seemed he wasn't the only one curious about the topic.
With a soft exhale, Aiko smiled, staring ahead towards the end of the hallway in front of them.
"Well, in all honesty, I didn't have time for one. I was heavily invested in my martial arts training, and I trained every morning and every afternoon for the entirety of my first year. Back then, it wasn't a requirement for an E.A.T student to have a partner, so I decided to spend my first year partnerless. I had been asked many times to be someone's partner, but I was never interested or simply wasn't compatible with anyone, so I always declined. But, this year turned out differently..."
A warm smile spread across her lips at the thought of Elam and his modest, yet nervous nature. He was confusing at times, but slowly, Aiko was beginning to understand him more and more.
By the time the two could converse any more with each other, the infirmary was already just a few feet away, with Aiko's father waiting patiently by the door on his office chair. Upon seeing the two girls, Riku smiled mischievously, propping his feet up against the wall in preparation for launching himself away.
"Have fun, girls. I have a class to teach, so I'll see you kids later." He threw up a peace sign and propelled himself down the hall once more, disappearing in seconds around the corner. Aiko chuckled slightly, never really understanding her father and the meaning of that office chair of his.
With an outstretched hand, she gripped the door handle, flashing Chloe a reassuring look before completely pushing it open. When she stepped inside, Aiko was surprised to find it empty, with no Dr. Stein in sight. She wandered into the middle of the room, glancing around in confusion. It was oddly silent.
"Dr. Stein? Are you here?" Aiko called out softly.
The squeaking of an office chair could be heard somewhere in the room, along with the clicking of heels clapping against the hard floor.
"I'm afraid Dr. Stein is not here today."
An unfamiliar woman's voice began to say, before pausing. The infirmary curtains blocking off a certain section of the room were suddenly drawn back, revealing a figure drenched in shadows. With a few small steps, the woman revealed herself completely, standing in front of the two girls. Her hair was a pale, ashy blonde that was cut short into a bob, exaggerating the sharpness of her chin and defined jawline. And her eyes... they were redder than blood, like Aiko's mother and father's, except they held a certain harshness to them that she couldn't quite explain.
The woman smiled coyly, revealing a set of brilliant, white teeth.
"I'm filling in for him today. I was recently hired here a few days ago. Call me Nurse Nocturne." She introduced herself, a hand on her hip. Aiko could only stand there silently, surprised the DWMA would hire another nurse, especially after what happened with the last one. Yet, the name 'Nocturne' sounded strangely familiar. Had she met this woman before?
"I'm Aiko-"
"Yes, Aiko Takahashi and Chloe Branwen. I know of you two already." Nurse Nocturne interrupted suddenly, motioning towards the two beds sitting in the center of the room. She didn't seem to be a woman of patience, and Aiko was slightly taken back by it. But she did like her straightforwardness.
"Please, have a seat. I'll begin your check-ups in just a moment."
And with that, she disappeared behind the curtains, entering another room filled with medicine cabinets. Before the nurse completely vanished, Aiko caught a glimpse of a peculiar necklace around her neck that had a raven feather blacker than night dangling from the chain.
Just who is this woman?
