Characters: Mrs. Joshen, Krohal

Krohal barged into the wood craving shop. The strange wild man was carrying a big wooden box that seemed to be quite heavy, especially for a man with kinked spine...

"Ay ya, Mrs. J. It be me again!" Called the wild man as he waddled inside, swayed by the weight of the box. Out of the shop, Krohal's skybeast Juju the winged serpent sat still at the door, poking its head inside with its large bugged eyes that didn't seem to ever focus on anything.

Krohal eventually laid the box on the floor cautiously. He groaned as he finally shed the extra weight off and stretched out to put all the bone and muscle in place. "I be on da forage earlier... So I be here to share some thing with ya, it be elephant bird eggs, first batch of this season, mon!" Said the man in enthusiasm.

The box was shown to have a single massive egg inside... However Krohal seemed to be shocked about it. "Whaaa?!! One?!! How that there be one?!" He turned around to looked at Juju, frowning. "Juju! Did ya eat 2 eggs instead of 1??? Yes ya did! Now what I be eating for dinner, ya big doofus!" Krohal shouted. Juju replied with a lick on its bulbous eyes.

Krohal shook his head. "Now poor Krohal be plucking fruits for his dinner tonight, how disappointin..." Said the man to himself. He then realized he was about to speak with the shop owner and turned back to Mrs. Joshen, a little smile returned to his face. "I give ya this egg, ya know... For ya hard work... Also, how mah figure be doin, yeh?" Asked the wild man.

Tiffany smiled as the delightful weirdo Krohal came back into her shop with that huge box of his. He'd ordered a carving done of his Skybeast, named Juju, a while ago. Due to the nature of the carving and the level of detail, it was taking a bit longer than the little mantelpieces she had on display.

"Aww, thank you, Krohal." She laughed as he scolded Juju for eating more than her share of egg, finishing up as he turned back to her.

"Also, how mah figure be doin, yeh?"

"Oh, it'll be ready soon enough! I'm just finishing up on some details, then it'll be all set!" Tiffany responded with a genuine smile. She loved doing what she did, and customers like Krohal made it that much more enjoyable.

"I'll be finishing it up probably after closing... I'll be running some deliveries, but only a couple, so if you stop by around noon tomorrow I should be in and your figurine ready!"

Tiffany didn't look too imposing if just glanced over. She had typical Sudentarian garb on, not a dress or robe but rather some loose pelt leggings that fell to her ankles. Her top was a woven shirt, made by her mother before she passed away. It was dyed light orange, standing out against her hazel brown hair and glittering emerald eyes. Her hair was worn back in a ponytail most often, braided to keep it short and out of the way. She had a belt on, complete with a sheathe for her carving knives, a bag of darts and a whetstone.

Krohal's face brightened up when he heard that his order would be done by the next day. "So good mon! I can't wait!"

The wild man then began to look around the shop, inspecting some wood work. "Ya work be very good, mon... Ya learnt from ya family?" Asked Krohal to Mrs. Joshen while his eyes still fixed on a figurine of an azure-plumed wyvern clutching an unfortunate giant goose in its claws.

Tiffany laughed her polite, petite laugh and nodded.

"I learned the most from my family, but it was only from a few select others that I really learned the tricks of the trade." She walked out from behind the counter to say hello to Juju before walking over to stand by Krohal.

"That one was actually made off one of my trips to Estendor. Fellow wanted a pegasus toy for his little girl, and I saw that scene as I was leaving. It stuck so vividly, and I don't know why."

"I saw one me self, beautiful yet crazy mon. Chased me and Juju for hours for flying too close to its nest." Krohal spoke about the wyvern, he then turned to look at the older woman. "Anyway, ya be livin alone here? Sorry, never see anyone here other than ya after I followed ya from da provin at Arebos." Asked Krohal curiously.

"Oh, yes, I live alone here right now. You see, Aldaf ran off to go do whatever he's doing right now and his father left the picture rather... early into his life."

Tiffany remembered back to watching the crowd of newly Proven flying off towards Westeros for reasons unknown. She had made a promise to herself, but also to Aldaf as he flew away.

"I remember telling myself, as if I was shouting at him over the roar of wingbeats... "Aldaf Joshen, you better come back alive or you'll figure out if there's a second afterlife!""

Krohal listened. He had almost forgotten that Mrs. J here is mother of Aldaf, the young man he met during the proving, who had taken up a riding challenge against Juju and lost. He had not paid attention before that the boy never returned home with his mother. "Oh yah, Aldaf... Totally forgot ya two be related. Now that you mentioned, where has he been gone to since da provin?... Maybe spreadin his wings like me, when I be leavin me tribe?" Said Krohal, acting like he is in a serious thought.

Tiffany shook her head. She didn't know what that boy was up to... but she had a feeling it was trouble. It was always some form of trouble he got himself into.

"I don't think so. He left with so many of the other children at the proving. He was headed west, I think..."

She sighed, rubbing her temple in worry.

"I wish I could tell him to come back. He'd been gone for so long, and I didn't know where he'd vanished off to or if he was dead or not... but he seems wrapped up in something more dangerous than my own worrisome troubles."

She looked to be dealing with Aldaf showing up out of the blue at the Proving decently enough, if not a bit upset at how he didn't stick around after before running off again, ready to cause a ruckus.

Krohal watched as the woman spoke about her son, clearly showed her worry. Krohal had always been the one who go out. Back in his younger days, he would go with the adults of his tribe to learn about hunting. Many trips would take days before they returned to the village. Those trips were always fun to participate and he would return home talking non-stop about the experience... However, he had never been the in same shoes of those who waited... His mother, the other women who waited for their men to return from the world where danger lurk at every corners... And then when he left his tribe to seek his own life and future... How would it feel to those he left behind? All of those thought seemed to be answered here, watching Mrs. Joshen longing for her son...

"Well, I will be stayin in this forest for a while, ya know... Learnin more about this place. Maybe I be checkin on ya once a while?... So ya be havin somebody to chat with." Said Krohal, feeling a big sheepish to offer his companionship, but he was certainly willing to do so.

Tiffany smiled, appreciating this wonderfully strange man who came to talk to her.

"That would be wonderful, Krohal. Plus I think Juju would want to come back anyhow, they seems to get along well with Kria anyhow!"

Kria, Tiffany's skybeast, was currently lightly patting Juju on the head playfully from outside. She was a griffin, with snowy white feathers and sterling grey fur. She was letting out light growling chirps as if to try and catch Juju's attention.

"Awww... They gonna be gettin along!" Said Krohal as he looked back at the two skybeasts.

Juju didn't do anything but stared aimlessly with his big, bulging eyes. Tongue flicked to sniff air and occasionally licked his own eyes. However, the winged serpent still let the griffin did whatever she wanted with him without trying to squirm away or anything... And that was a good sign. Krohal knew Juju clearly wasn't a very expressive skybeast, but he sure is friendly and rarely ever get agitated.

"Anyway, it be gettin dark now. I better be goin... Da fruits be not pickin themselves, mon." Said Krohal to Mrs. Joshen, still looked at bit down for losing his egg to Juju.

Mrs. Joshen laughed as Kria lightly bapped Juju again, as if to say goodbye.

"If you want sweet fruits, they're usually found to the south of here, just as a tip!" She smiled, feeling a little less worried over the state of the world overall now.

"Well, thanks for da direction mon... I and Juju be goin now. Say goodbye Juju!" Said Krohal to the wood carver.

Juju responded by licking his eyes again. Krohal then walked over to the winged serpent, climbed up on his saddle... Once he made sure of all the locks and securing himself steadily on his skybeast, Krohal steered Juju to face the forest nearby. "Let's fly! Yeeehaw!" Cried Krohal.

Juju's six vibrant wings spread and began to flap in unison... Soon, the winged serpent launched from his platform and flew up into the air. The majestic beasts moved through the air with such grace until his head suddenly crashed into a tree branch. Juju and his rider fell down, swaying a bit before regaining their balance... Then it was just a sight of the weird skybeast staggering along the way, bumping into branches every now and then until both of them disappeared into the tree line.

Mrs. Joshen waved to the two of them as they flew off, wincing each time Juju thudded into a stray branch. She walked back inside, closing up the shop and getting ready to eat some food of her own. It was a simple dish, something she'd made with Aldaf before he rocketed off into wild experimentation.

It was more akin to a pasta dish rather than anything else, with diced up vegetables and fruits in it with a bit of meat from some of the birds around the area.

Spica heard Valkyrie make noise on the lower floor, heading out of the stable to peek her head over the edge to look into Valkyrie's stable. "Valkyrie, are you alright?"

She tilted her head, a bit of straw falling from under her scales.

Snapping bone, beating it, tearing off chunks... Valkyrie made a short work of her ribs rack. She broke them into several pieces and one by one, each piece was swallowed down her ravenous maw.

It made her feel better, dropping the frustration she felt from Serik for a bit. Valkyrie wondered of what happened out there. She couldn't see or hear her rider, but the sense of his temper was clear to her. Did he want something? Wanting her to go aiding him? Or signaling a danger she couldn't see?... No matter, it seemed his problem was waning away anyway.

A familiar sound came from behind and Valkyrie immediately turned to face it. Her hackle puffed up in aggression.

"Go away, wyvern!..." Hissed the stork drake...

Spica didn't flinch as Valkyrie hissed at her. She'd come to expect... general negativity from a few of her fellow Skybeasts, to put it lightly.

"I asked if you were okay." Spica replied.

Valkyrie looked at the quilled wyvern poking head from behind the stall divider, confused by the creature's behavior. "I breath... I live... Not dead... Will not be food today..." Replied the stork drake crudely. Valkyrie raised her head high and tried to make herself as intimidating as possible. If the wyvern's visit meant any business, she would be ready to fight.

"Go now... wyvern gets nothing here..."

Spica just looked more confused. She let out a quizitive growl, wondering why Valkyrie was gearing up to fight.

"We're in a safe place. Of course you won't be food."

She respected Valkyrie's wishes and withdrew her head, starting to walk her way down from the upper level towards the door, flexing her wings as she prepped for a small flight outside to rid herself of spare straw stalks and let her muscles get some exercise.

She wasn't subtle about it either, not really caring who watched.

As Serik making his way back to the river, he sensed a large figure moving pass him. It was Storm, Keshka's black dragon companion. The dragon moved forward in the same direction as Serik. There, Keshka was standing, greeted by her skybeast companion. Serik approached the two as they interacted with each other.

Without even lookin toward the young man, Keshka spoke up. "Something on your mind boy?" Said the instructor, to Serik's surprise as if she could read his mind. "Actually, I do have..." Said Serik before he paused to processed his next word.

"I have been feeling down, disappointed..." Serik began. "Since I have recovered my light magic, I have been trying hard to control it, to learn of what it can do, to use it to fight against the darkbornes... But so far I haven't done anything other than some basic illusion, one that is still not quite perfect."

"You said that illusion can hold advantage over our enemies, fooling them into our grasp... But what else we can do then? Fire can burn, water can freeze and sweep, wind can hurl and push and lighting sear whatever it touch to crisp... But what about light? Are we only to use our power to fool and trick? Just distraction? But what if the enemies manage to get behind it?"

"Back at the island, I exhausted myself to put around illusion to distract the deathbornes so my friends could strike at them... But what if it doesn't work? Kari said that they seems to become smarter that night when they attacked the market place. What if this time, when we go to face them looking for instructor Danube, they don't get fooled by my trick anymore? I am not a strong warrior nor a seasoned sharpshooter, and even when my mind wants to rip these abominations apart, I can't... I can't do anything. My skybeast was the one who had to put herself between me and the deathbornes... And she got hurt... I can't let that happen again."

Serik paused after shooting a long explanation at Keshka then looked up at her. "Please, teacher... Is there anyway I can actually cause harm with light magic? I will do everything to learn it... For Valkyrie, for my friends!" Asked Serik, pleading in desperation.

Keshka listened to his admission in silence, her expression shifting slightly from appraising, to careful contemplation.
"You want to cause harm?" She repeated, though it was difficult to tell if it was with disapproval. "Is that what you really want?"
She turned her back on him. "Because if it is, go ask Targus to make you a weapon and teach you to hit things with it. It would be more effective than applying that type of thinking to your magic."
Keshka stroked Storm's long, slender neck and the dragon rumbled as her amethyst eyes locked onto the boy behind them. Her black tail flipped impatiently.
"Let me ask you," Keshka added, "of the teachers here at the academy, who do you think is the strongest? Think hard, because the next question I will ask you is...why?"

"Let me ask you, of the teachers here at the academy, who do you think is the strongest? Think hard, because the next question I will ask you is...why?" Said Keshka.

Serik slinked back at his instructor question. Who does he think would come out on top the others? Serik thought... While he did think a certain magic is less combative, to say that any of the instructor would be the strongest take more than looking at just their magic.

"I... I don't know..." Serik eventually replied, looking nervous to answer. "I have yet to know all of you enough to analyze that overall who would come on top... But I do think light magic is the least advantageous." Added the boy.

Keshka remained silent for a moment and then, she sighed patiently. "And as long as you think that, I can't teach you." She looked at him then in earnest. "Light magic requires the most creativity to use, and as such, it is the most versatile. How you develop your magic is up to you, but I will say this though: being able to control what your enemy perceives, will control what your enemy does. Do that, and you will never lose."

Serik was silent. He expected Keshka to be angry, to lash out at him for doubting her profession... But she didn't... She seemed much more placid and patient for putting up with him. The instructor restated what she told Serik and other light magic students at the class... Light magic is what the user wants it to be... In this case, it's all Serik himself that had to figure everything on his own.

The boy looked away. He was silent for a moment then spoke up. "I am sorry teacher if I offended you..." Said Serik.
"There is so little time left until we head off to look for the missing instructor... I don't know what else I can do."

Keshka regarded her student, looked at him in earnest, then, she looked away with a smile. It was slight, and thin, and held just the barest trace of regret.
"You're frustrated. I can't blame you for that. Why don't you try to rest up for now. Running it through your mind will only tire you out more...though..."
She turned back to her dragon, but paused. "Storm, I think he might need a little motivation. Go...kill his skybeast."
The dragon opened it's maw in a terrible grin, sharp teeth glistening. She charged for the stable, her claws barely touching the ground. She raced through the open stable door, ready to sink her claws in Valkyrie's side.
