Skulls & Shackles - Pathfinder Forum Game

Certainly not!

I like D&D best when it's in its weird-fantasy mashup mode, a la Planescape with stuff like Tieflings, Aasimar, Gith, Frog People. So I'm very keen on seeing stuff like Grippli.

Exactly. If you're just going to play humans, whats the point? I'm honestly loving all the part humans in pathfinder: From the simple half and halves Half-Elf and Half-Orc) to the odd (Tiefling, Aasimar, Ignis, etc) to the bizarre (Half-Ogre)

D&D is at its most excellent when a frog-person, a half-devil, a mantisman, a fae, a djinn, and a duergar all walk into a bar/get arrested/enslaved by priates/hook of your choice and decide to go on an adventure. This is not to say playing humans is bad, just expressing a thought: D&D has some of its most interesting writing when it's going into crazy weird fantasy experimental territory.

...I think we went off topic again.

Edit: In fact, having a couple humans is great, because it makes a great contrast and really brings home that people are living in an alien world where taking on mercenary contracts with your Grippli companion is not particularly odd.

As far as the whole human vs abnormal races goes, I'm for any and all. A group of regular old humans played well can blow any story with the super powerful munchkin Half angel half warforged half undead gestalt knight Mage played by a whiny meta gamer out of the water. I don't play RPs to win and live out Mary Sue fantasies, I play to have fun with my group and to develop deep and meaningful relationships.

As far as playing odd things, or things off kilter. I blame my parents for raising me on a steady diet of the strange and wonderful. I don't think any child can be raised watching MST3k and Aeon Flux/The Maxx MTV oddities can grow up and play make believe as something normal ;)

I'll apologize now, I've been introduced to the joys of four lokos so I responded with a little bit under the influence ;)

All right, folks. I have some good news and some bad news.

First the good news: I'd say we have enough applicants to go ahead and get this game rolling. Dark Wizard, make it so, please!

Now the bad news: I don't think I can take any more players. If you haven't submitted yet, I'm afraid the window has closed. The following list of applicants represent those who will set sail for the Shackles - welcome aboard! (If I missed you, let me know.)

List of Applicants

  • Sarzain Stormgaze - Human Wizard
  • Scraaw - Grippli ???
  • Aaron - Human Aquatic Druid
  • Alexis Grim - Dhampir Anti-Paladin
  • Tyrné - Tiefling Magus

Surviving the Shackles

Introduction/Story Teaser

Slaves, ev’ry one of ya! Any Shackles pirate’s worth ten o’ you poxy devils, an’ ev’ry Free Captain commandin’ a sloop’ll keep sailin’ circles around any bloated Chelish frigate you send at us. We’ll go on raidin’ yer sea lanes, stealin’ yer silver coins with Abrogail’s pouty gob stamped on them, an’ we’ll cart it all back home, where we’ll sing an’ drink ’til the sea swallows us all! I’m ready to do my dance with Besmara; no regrets for a life lived free on the waves. The worms’ll be better company than you ugly, dung-eating devil’s slaves anyway!”

—Last words spoken by Free Captain Wilihem Wache, moments before his public hanging in Macini for piracy

It's time to set sail in the pirate-infested waters of the Shackles, where bloated Chelish trading vessels, uncharted islands rife with treasure, and other cutthroat pirates await your motley and burgeoning crew.

Gameplay

Pathfinder Ruleset

The game will be using the Pathfinder rules - which for those who haven't experienced it, are essentially D&D 3.75. Most of the core rules are available online at

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/D20PFsrd

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/.

You don't need to be a Pathfinder expert to apply, but a basic understanding of the rules is expected.

Paizo Adventure Path - A little more railroad-y than sandbox-y

This is a pre-written adventure path - this is awesome, because it makes my life as a GM much easier. But it also places some expectations on you, the players. While there is a little sandbox-action later in the AP, the initial "acts" are a little railroad-y. And once we get into the game, you're kind of expected to go with the plot hooks to keep things moving forward.

Non-Good Alignment Characters Welcome

While you don't have to be evil to take part in this AP, it certainly is a nice break from the typical "save the world because we're such noble good guys" adventure.

There are Pirates & Ninjas (& Wizards & Clerics)

You may have guessed this by now, but this is a sea-themed adventure featuring countless pirates. But this is set in Golarion (Paizo's universe), so there are all manner of characters available to you.

A Post A Weekday

I'd like for players to post at least once a day during the week. This will help keep the game moving and help us get through the beginning of the AP, which while important for character building, can get a little tedious if dragged out for too long.

Player Slots & Requirements

I will take up to five players - the strongest submissions will be selected. I base a strong submission on the character concept, backstory and "correct" character crunch.

All characters will use the following guidelines to build their character:

Character Creation

  • Players will start at 1st level.

  • No alignment restrictions, but you must be able to play well with others - both in-character and out
  • 20-point ability buy

  • Average gold for your class
  • Max HP for your class

  • 3 traits - one MUST be a campaign trait.

  • Core races preferred.
  • All Paizo-created classes are allowed.
This game is now live and can be found here: http://www.rpdom.com/forums/surviving-the-shackles.6531/

Players can go ahead and submit their characters and if the ST could edit the first post to reflect the game's recruitment status, I'd be ecstatic.

Enjoy!
