It's based on reality. There isn't any truly fictional servants in Fate. Every "fictional" servant did exist. It's like Jesus in real life. It's common knowledge that Jesus was a real man and did actually live. The myth comes from him being the son of god and performing miracles. The Grail blends the two. They take the real person who really did live and then give them the powers and traits from the mythos surrounding them. So even if that person was just a normal man in life, as a heroic servant he's more like his legend describes him.

You can't have a truly 100% fictional servant, though. Which is why things like Lord of the Rings aren't possible, because that's just pure fiction. There is no real human that Aragorn or Legolas were based on that the grail could empower. So they can't be summoned because they never existed.
I'm just saying, should it not be based upon the pure hopes of the people, and the dreams and love that these stories created within them? I mean, you're obviously not gonna summon Orlando Bloom in the role of Legolas, but I'd personally believe that all those people who truly loved and believed in the writings of Tolkien could breath life into the characters. It isn't about reality, but what people hold to be true in their hearts and minds and oh my god I'm starting to sound like Nero.

There are roleplays where this is valid, for sure.

That isn't how the grail works, so no rofl. Fame only boosts servants that already exist, you can't fabricate fictional ones out of it. At the end of the day the Grail still needs a base to build off of, it can't just create something out of nothing.

Might I remind you that some servants are GIANT MONKEY MEN WHO BEAT DRAGONS TO DEATH WITH POLES?!

I'm saying how is that not 100% fictional? I don't think Berserker is based on any form of Reality

It's as based on reality as Zhuge-liang being based on the Romance of the three kingdoms more than reality. And Xuanzang being a thing as well, I think it's okay LOL. He's mythological just as much as a lot of heroes.

That's because in the nasuverse Sun Wukong was a real person, hell maybe he was considered a real person in real life too, I don't know. But like all the heroic spirits his life wasn't as grandiose as his servant portrays him. Like, Artoria didn't go around shooting giant death star lasers in life. This was granted by the grail as a way of conceptualizing the power of Excalibur that has been hyped up throughout the ages. Same with Vlad as I mentioned earlier, in life he wasn't a vampire but because of legend saying he was Dracula the grail imbued him with vampiric traits.

The servants summoned aren't copies of what they were in life. They're a blend of what they were in life mixed with the legends that surround them. But you still require that foundation in reality. The grail will add things to a person to conceptualize their fame and legends, but it wont just make stuff up out of thin air.

But the truth lies not in this dirty sad world, but in the verdant fields of love and joy within the human mind and soul! The fact that so many people place their hearts and souls into these characters cannot be ignored! Their love is the purest form of magic this world has ever seen! It can topple regimes and build heroes, and does it matter if they existed in our world? I SAY NAY! What matters is the love and hope and joy created by these characters that builds to such a point as to allow them to breath in actuality, for the heart trumps reality!

(Yes, I embraced my inner Nero)

Do you want Nasus email? He has a blog, if you can translate Japanese. A lot of heroes didn't exist, but were apocryphal or considered real/became part of myth to the point that they were considered real. (Like Paul Bunyan and Folk heroes.)

Recent heroes don't have that in the normal Nasuverse, but there ARE Roleplays that work with it lol.

The latest I'd go with eligible servants is World War 2. Past that and you're really pushing it. Plus past that and they most likely aren't dead rofl.

Even worse, this was made before Grand order, Apoc, Strange/Fake, Lord El Melloi Case files, and Mahoutsukai no Yoru

SINCE IT DOESN'T HAVE LORD EL MELLOI case files, IT DOESN'T HAVE GRAY, FUCK IT THEN.

Speaking of Gray, I might need that edgelord sometime soon.
