So, I suppose, Jean is the princess' father's brother, her uncle, who was the actual heir to the throne — but was kicked out because he wasn't the eldest. Family stuff.

Jean goes into hiding, and comes out, certainly bewildered, after seeing that the country has been thrown into the hands of a little girl — that and a little girl is easier to deal with than a dumb-ass old man.
