School Daze

Tegan stared at the food in front of his face, his hand falling over his gently groaning stomach. He could feel the emptiness when his fingers fell across his shirt. His brain kick-started, shifting into third gear and speeding off. Why was he letting his guard down? His defenses seemed to crumble under the gaze of the emerald-eyed boy, his heart reaching out before his mind could react. Was it normal to feel so vulnerable around someone so simple? He was letting things slip, warnings and signs, all terrible mistakes that made anxiety well under his chest. Would he find out? Am I not being careful enough? His thoughts trembled, long vines of dark notions pulling at his seams again. He ran his hand down to his pocket, trailing nervous fingers over the red binding in attempts to console himself. He glanced over at Quin, his hands grasping the pizza cutter. Tegan dropped all his worries when the boy came into view, his stance shifting back with a calm air. He placed both hands on the boy's shoulders, running his palms down his arms and then pulling up his too-long sleeves. "You'll get your shirt messy." He breathed, tugging up and folding the the ends of Quin's sweatshirt, freeing his hands. "Hurry up, I'm starving." He said with a small laugh.

Quinlan looked up at Tegan when he slid his hands down his arms. His cheeks when a little bit red when Tegan pulled his sleeves up his arms a little bit. "Oh, um, thanks." He said. He smiled a little when Tegan told him to hurry up. He then started to cut the pizza with perfect lines. About a minute later, the pizza was now cut. "Do you want a drink?" He asked after a moment. He looked up at Tegan again, waiting for an answer of some sort.

Tegan nodded feeling rather parched. He slid a slice of piping hot pizza into his palm, taking the end between his teeth. A bridge of oozing white dairy fell across his chin as he took a bite. He smiled, trailing the back of his hand across his mouth, wiping up the excess sauce. "Quin..." he paused to take another bite, chewing slowly. The flavor bounced off his tongue making him roll his eyes into the back of his head, teasing. "You are a pizza god."

Quin moved to get two glasses from another cupboard and grabbed two glasses. He started to fill them with water when he heard Tegan say his name. He turned around to look at him, wondering what he was going to say. He was smiling and Quin took that as a good sign. Then Tegan swallowed and spoke again. Quin smiled a little bit. "I'm glad you like it." He said. He held out one of the glasses to Tegan.

Grabbing the glass of water from Quin, he glanced sideways at the clock along the microwave.

7:46

Had he really been at Quin's that long? It felt like he'd just gotten there. He took a sip of ice-water, enjoying the sulfer-less taste. His home stood over an old water-well, meaning their water was free but disgusting. Often he'd be showering, and the pipes would groan shooting yellowish water over his body. He took a bite of crust chewing slowly. He glanced out the kitchen window, the sun just beginning to set. He could feel the nocturnal fear fall through his ribs again, tugging tightly at his stomach. He placed his pizza on the counter, hunger suddenly passing as his brain took a break from being genuinely happy. He stared at his black-booted feet, mind filling with their mathoughtic plan. He glanced up at the brown-haired male, heart ramming against his chest. He can't be there when it happens. He stayed silent, face falling.

Quinlan picked up a piece of the pizza after Tegan took his cup. It was good, definitely better than pizza made somewhere else. Sometimes he made the dough totally from scratch. Although it was easier from a package. After a moment, he noticed that Tegan seemed to change a bit again. He had started to stare at the floor and then he looked up at Quinlan. "Is something wrong?" He asked him, feeling concerned again. It seemed like there was something that was constantly bothering him.

Quin's concerned voice brought him back the the present, his yellow-green eyes blinking slowly. There was no way he could tell this soul about the darkness that swirled behind his eyes. To Tegan, everyone was a simple meat shell, holding together poison and unnecessary emotions, everyone but Quinlan. Whenever he looked down at the boy, his brain would freeze, the blackness receding for a few moments. If only this boy could suck out all the venom from Karma's being, maybe he wouldn't want the end of many. He took a deep breath, looking at the other with drooping eyelids. "No, nothing's wrong." He lied and then pulled to boy to him once more, this time he just held him, letting himself enjoy the company of his only light in a forever growing hell.

Quinlan wasn't sure that Tegan was telling the truth, but he wasn't going to push him into telling him. He wanted to try and help him in any way that he could. Even though he had no idea how to even start. He never felt like he cared about someone this much and it confused him, seeing as he barely even knew Tegan. Then he was pulled to the other again and it took him a moment, but he wrapped his arms around him. It was nice to be close to someone. Even if that someone confused him and sometimes scared him.

When small arms wrapped themselves around him he could feel his body almost melt. He pulled Quin closer, not wanting to let go. He knew his actions were often unpredictable, and just a tad shy from malicious, but he meant well. He was only trying to protect Quin from the horrible truth. Protect him from the disgust Tegan had in himself, the darkness that consumed all. After a long while of his warm breath falling over the other's shoulder, taking in his scent, did the white-haired boy speak. "Thank you." He murmured into the soft brown hair. Quin didn't know it yet, but he would eventually be the thin string attaching the tall male to his sanity.

Quin wasn't sure why, but he didn't want this moment to end. He was sort of afraid that Tegan would end up hating him for some reason and leaving him alone again. However when Tegan hugged him, he didn't feel that way. He felt okay and normal. He closed his eyes, letting himself relax a little in the other's embrace. Then he heard Tegan speak. Quin was confused for a moment before looking up at him. Why was Tegan thanking him? Quin didn't think he was doing anything special. "For what?" His voice was quiet. He didn't believe he did anything worth thanks. Even if he did, Quin still thought of him as a friend and friends just did what they had to do.

Tegan hadn't been ready for a follow-up question, his hand falling to the back of Quin's head, lightly stroking his brown locks. He moved his thumb down to the nape of his neck, making small circles with the tips of his fingers. He thought for a moment, not sure how he could put it into words without failing himself and Jacob miserably. "Being here. Being alive." He said softly, his lips pressing into the boy's forehead. He kissed his warm skin softly, white lashes drifting over his cheeks as he took in his scent again. He knew they weren't just friends, they had to be more. He never acted this way towards Jacob, though the red-head had been acting kind of funny lately. "What does this make us?"

Quinlan kept his eyes on Tegan as he felt the hand on the back of his head. It felt relaxing in a way, calming. Then it moved down and he could feel Tegan's fingertips making circles and he felt goosebumps again. The words confused him more. He was thanking Quin for being alive? He had never thought someone would thank him for that. It was weird, but it made him feel kind of special. Like he mattered to someone. On instinct, his eyes closed when Tegan kissed his forehead. His heart skipped about at the soft feeling. It made him feel almost completely melted inside. Then Tegan said something else and Quinlan looked up at him. What did it make them? He had to be totally honest, he'd feel guilty for trying to say something he wasn't sure about. "I-I don't know."

I sigh fell from Tegan's lips, his intense light green eyes glancing down at Quin, eyelids drooped. He wasn't sure what they were either, but he liked it. Yet, he found it extremely troubling. This boy was the only thing standing in the way of their plans, and if Jacob knew he was involved in any form of relationship all hell would break loose. They had made a strict pact, form the very beginning of the school year. The oath still ringing in his head as he stared down at the handsome teen. I, Tegan Karma, solemnly swear by the flesh on my bones to dedicate myself to the fall of Jameswood High. If I should perish in the attack, I ask for nothing more. I shall restrain myself from all other duties and relationships until the mission is carried out. His mind reeled, guilt falling along his tongue as he thought of the disturbing events that were soon to come.

"I guess we're both on the same page then, huh?" His head hung low. He dipped down, resting his forehead gently against Quin's trying to focus on the boy under his skull instead of the devil inside his ribs.

Quinlan continued to stare at Tegan. He noticed that he seemed to be thinking about something else. Quin couldn't really explain it, but there was something about his eyes. A look he'd seen before on Tegan. It was subtle, almost unnoticeable, but Quin was good at subtle. He closed his eyes as Tegan's forehead gently met his. "Yeah." He liked the feeling of warmth he got from being so close to him though. So whatever this was, it couldn't be bad. Could it? Quin hoped not, because he didn't think he ever wanted to let Tegan go. He just didn't want to. He heard Bear come through the dog door and walk through the kitchen, but Quin didn't move. Then Bear left, padding off through the house, probably in search of his dad.

A sigh escaped Tegan's thin lips. That made both of them. Maybe it was better this way? To stay within the shadows, for Quin, would be best.

The sound of soft pads and sharp claws clinked down the wood-flooring, making Team glance in their direction. Bear ignored the two males and seemed to go off in search of someone else to paw affection from. Aching feet brought their long needed embrace to a close. He slumped over Quinn's body, his face buried in his brown locks once more. "Whatever it is, I think we should keep it this way." He said, genuinely as he wrapped his arms around the boy tighter and lifted him up, hooking his legs around his waste. He glanced at the clock for a moment, realizing how late it was getting. A yawn fell from his teeth, making his body shudder.

Quinlan wanted to know what the sigh was for, but he didn't ask. He just kept quiet as Tegan glanced at Bear's retreating frame. Then Tegan said they should keep it this way.

Quin wasn't sure how he felt about it, but he nodded anyway. When Tegan lifted him up, Quin held his breath for a moment. He wrapped his arms around Tegan a little more because he now could and his legs around his waist. His yawning made Quin yawn a little bit too. Without thinking he gently brushed Tegan's hair from his face.

The sudden touch on his cheek made the white-haired boy flinch, not use to central hands. He almost dropped Quin on the floor, but checked himself, quickly grasping hold of the boy's frame tighter. "Sorry." He murmured and began to walk out of the kitchen. His boots collided with the ground, making large thumps as he moved. He brought the small male to a large black leather couch, and slumped into the seat, Quin still clinging to him. Team arched his head back against the frame, his white hair pouring over the cushion. He closed his eyes, chest lightly rising and falling as he breathed in the other's scent. He opened his lids, looking up at the expanding light ceiling. His brain slammed into overdrive, picking up where it had left off in the kitchen.

I, Tegan Karma, solemnly swear by the flesh on my bones to dedicate myself to the fall of Jameswood High. If I should perish in the attack, I ask for nothing more. I shall restrain myself from all other duties and relationships until the mission is carried out.

The words repeated themselves in his head, growing louder with every moment he stayed pressed against the brown-haired male. He placed his palms gently against the side of the other's face. "I don't want to leave, ever." He said quietly, wishing he hadn't. A chill raced down his back, remembering the unsettling house across the street.

Quinlan gasped quietly when Tegan almost dropped him. He mumbled a sorry of his own before Tegan had started to walk from the kitchen. Quin watched as Tegan slumped in the seat, watching his chest rise and fall as he breathed. Even when Tegan's eyes opened, Quin just kept watching him.

Then Tegan's hands held the sides of his face. The words made his heart skip a beat and his throat felt tight. He almost asked why he said it, but Quin didn't want to upset him. Quin stayed quiet for a moment, not sure how to react. He guessed it was because Tegan didn't want to go home. "M-Maybe, um, maybe you can s-stay, um, stay the night." Being slightly nervous brought back the stutter and he wished that he could just get rid of it altogether.

The offer hung in the air, tempting the Karma kid intensely. He pondered the thought of laying his head next to Quin's, falling asleep with his arms wrapped tightly around the boy's torso. The idea made his eyes swim with pleasant images, wishing it could be like this forever.

I, Tegan Karma, solemnly swear by the flesh on my bones to dedicate myself to the fall of Jameswood High...

He closed his eyes again, trying hard to will the oath back into the large vault at the center of his mind, cramming it behind the alphabatized file of the school's student body.

If I should perish in the attack, I ask for nothing more.

The words piled behind his ears, silently stinging at his pink flesh. He couldn't look at Quin right now, knowing what lay beyond the hours of today.

I shall restrain myself from all other duties and relationships until the mission is carried out.

He finally spoke, lids shooting open again to stare into the emerald hues of the light in his life. His breath caught in his throat, lips peeling apart to say 'yes', but his brain kicked his heart in the stomach, willing his mouth to utter words he did not mean. "No, I should probably go home tonight. You'll only keep me awake." The last part was a hundreds percent true, knowing the boy's presence sparked electricity in his veins. For some reason, Quin knew how to get his heart buzzing.

Quinlan watched Tegan again, waiting for an answer. He wasn't sure if Tegan would go for it, but he couldn't make him agree to it. The moments passed and Quinlan held his breath waiting. It was almost like everything stopped until Tegan's eyes opened again. He waited still, even as Tegan opened his mouth to say something.

Then he said that he should go home. Quin nodded a little bit, he could understand it, sort of. What he said made Quin's heart skip a beat. He didn't think that he had that kind of power of anyone. "Oh, okay." He said, nodding just a little bit.

Tegan glanced at the night behind them, his chin pointed towards the ceiling as he stretched his neck back to get a better view of across the street. His eyes scanned the upside-down house, watching as a light switched on in his bedroom. Jase was looking for him, and he knew the man wouldn't rest until Karma trudged home. His eyes swam with fear again.

He had to go home, though. He couldn't risk growing any closer to Quin.

With trembling hands he gently pulled the boy off his body, laying him onto the couch next to him. Without warning Tegan placed his hands on the arm of the chair, looking over the boy. His white hair brushed lightly on his forehead, uncovering the slow healing gash above his brows. "I have to go." He said gently, bit fear stuck itself to the sides of his mouth. Before the male could protest, or ask what was wrong, he leaned in. His lips caressed the other's, kissing him with passion.

After a few moments of the blissful movement, he got to his feet and trudged away, heading for his backpack on the kitchen counter

Quinlan continued to look at Tegan, mostly curious as to what was going through his head. There was a change in Tegan's eyes again as he looked at his house across the street and Quin grew sort of worried about what it meant. He just didn't think asking would be a good idea, even if he wanted to.

Then Tegan lifted him off and onto the couch. Confusion on his face, he looked up at Tegan leaning over him. Then he mentioned having to go home. Quin sort of wanted him to stay, the house felt less lonely with him there. However, Tegan's lips were on his again and Quin relaxed against the kiss. Tegan then pulled away and went to the kitchen to get his bag.

Quin was stuck on the couch for a moment before he stood up. He still didn't want Tegan to leave, but he couldn't make him stay if he really had to go.

The sound of small feet shuffling towards him made his heart fall. He's making this harder then it has to be...

Tegan shouldered his black bag, trailing his fingers over his pocket, making sure his red notebook was still tucked tightly against his thigh. He turned around, eyes falling on Quinn's face again. "You keep looking at me like that and you'll be stuck with me forever." He murmured, his stomach falling. He wished he could stay longer then eternity. He wished he could stop time, and stand there staring down at the small face that made him feel full inside. He stalled a little longer, taking Quin's cheek in his palm. "I'll see you tomorrow." He breathed, trying to console himself more then comfort Quin.

Quinlan looked down when he heard what Tegan said. "Sorry." He mumbled. He didn't realize he was looking at him a certain way. Then again, he never really understood much about his own expressions. His dad always seemed to know what he was thinking by how he looked and he never understood it.

Then he felt Tegan's hand on his cheek and he looked up at him. He wanted to say that he'd rather have Tegan here forever than have to say goodbye tonight. However, he didn't know how Tegan would take that and he barely thought it and he felt embarrassed, he'd never be able to actually say it out loud. His face had gone red at the thought even though he tried not to let it "See you tomorrow." He repeated. That was better than nothing. Quinlan could take that, knowing he'd see him again.

Team planted a kiss on his forehead before reaching for the brass knob. He swung the door open, and was gone.

Slowly the male traveled across the street, his hand shaking as he stepped on the lawn. The light in his bedroom window was still on, making chills run down his spine. He reached for the screen, heart ramming tightly against his chest. He flung the first door open, face meeting a tall chipped door. He took a deep breath, his body suspended above shark-infested waters. He shoved the door open with his foot, darkness peering back at him. His lungs quivered as oxygen refused to flow in and out. He measured the moments with his heart beats. One...

He heard footsteps racing down the wooden stairs

Two...

A heavy groan shook his ribs, a large man coming into view.

Three...

A fist took a handful of his shirt, causing the boy to fall into the house. The door slammed behind him. An open palm collided with his face, sending a burn through the bruise that had just begun to heal. "Where were you?" A disgusting man spat, another slap vibrating against Tegan's numb cheek. "I said where were you?!" Whiskey breath fell against the boy's nostrils, searing the hairs.

"I went to a friends!" He finally spat, getting a word in.

Something hard slammed against the back of his head causing him to fall forward into the pig's figure.

"So, you wanna get right to it, eh?" He sneered, a malicious chuckle rumbling the floor around him. A knee came up, ramming itself into the white-haired boy's stomach. Wind rushed from between his teeth, spittle flying into the face of his attacker, only making the drunken man angrier.

Tegan's back slid down the wall, his head falling forward hair barely brushing over his knees. He took two deep breaths before the same limb slid into his chin. His bottom lip split, sending the taste of copper through his mouth. "Jase, stop, please." He begged, his voice small. The sound of his wavering vocals only fueled the fire.

Made bent down, his large hand wrapping around white strands. He tugged, hard, pulling the teenager to his feet, a yelp escaping Tegan's throat. As soon as the noise fell against the looking silence, Karma's heart sank. He knew what was coming next.

"Boy, what have I told you about makin' noise!" The slob growled, yanking the boy behind him as he ascended the stairs. Tegan scrambled to keep his footing on the sod den steps, combat boots slamming hard against the flooring, scuffing the wood. This action made the large man's temper overflow. "You're ruinin' my floor!"

Tegan pulled his hands over his face, trying to sheila the tender skin from another blow, his hand getting injured instead. Something cracked loudly, pain running through the boy's knuckle. He yelled in agony again, making another limb fly into the side of his head

Everything went black.
