School Daze

Tegan smiled, weakly, and shuffled forward. He grabbed two blue lunch trays, the line decreasing in front of them slowly. "What are you hungry for?" He asked, handing one platter to the smaller boy. The smell of pizza and spaghetti wrapped around his head, making his stomach restrict unpleasantly. Hot dogs hidden in white buns were slid inside paper bowls, etched with red checkers. He glanced at the array of food around them, noting how he barely ever ate at school. He hadn't realized how malnourished he was, hands vibrating from low blood sugar. He avoided the hot-dogs, the overall shape unapeasing to his clouded mind. He grabbed for a simple burger, picking the cheese off and laying it on one side of his plate. Dairy made him feel I'll, amd he didn't want a repeat of yesterday.

Quinlan noticed how Tegan's smile seemed almost forced. Had he done something wrong? His mind always seemed to go there. He looked down at the tray handed to him. Looking at the food options, he remembered why he had stopped eating the school food. It wasn't appetizing. He grabbed the least disgusting-looking piece of pizza and put it on his tray. He continued down the line, not getting much food but just enough. This would probably the last time he ate at school.

Tegan slipped a bottle of apple juice, a few strips of celery, and two packs of Diritos onto his tray before moving down the line. He squirt a large dollop of ketchup onto his burger, the red condiment reminding him of blood. His mind reeled, remembering the red notebook pressed rightly to his thigh. He tried hard to keep his thoughts from trailing among that path, his stomach dropping. He played for his food, and moved them to a round table at the very far corner of the mess-hall, sitting with his back against the wall. He uncapped his drink, the sweet taste of apple falling over his tongue making him smile slightly. "The school's food looks like shit." He said, replacing the top on his beverage before munching on a slice of celery.

Quinlan paid for his food and followed Tegan through the cafeteria and to a table. He sat down next to him, but he didn't really look up. He could still feel everyone looking at them. Not exactly staring, but glancing repeatedly. It still made him feel weird. Then Tegan mentioned how bad the food looked. Quin nodded a bit. He just hoped it tasted better.

Tegan finished his celery, and brought the burger to his lips, teeth ripping into the meat. His mouth crawled with flavor, the food sinking in his empty stomach pleasantly. "Ignore them Quin." He said, noting the other's incredible uncomfort. He wiped the back of his hand over his lips, dropping his food on his tray and letting his fingers fall along the small of Quin's back, pads raking up his spine gently. He continued to rub the boy's back, trying hard to console him. "They're only gawking because their small brains can't understand." He dipped his head closer to the other's, yellow-green eyes fixed onto his face. "Please, eat." He asked, and planted a kiss on his soft cheek. "You'll feel better."

Quinlan looked up at Tegan. He wished it was that easy to ignore them all. The other's hand running along his back made him feel slightly calmer. His next statement even caused him to smile just a hair. His blushed a little bit when Tegan kissed him, but he nodded. He didn't want to make Tegan worry by not eating and he knew it couldn't hurt. He picked up a small piece of celery and started to eat it.

The fact that he was eating something made his mind settle a little easier. He took another bite of his food, chewing fast so he could have more time to speak to Quin. His brain reeled back to the redhead that occupied so much of his mind, guilt settling in his throat. "I'm sorry about Jacob. I don't know what's gotten into him." He said, taking a s wig of his apple juice. "He's not like this, normally. I'm not sure why he's having such a big problem with us." He lied, knowing it was their oath he broke. The only thing that bound their lives together, makimgbthem like blood-brothers.

Quinlan continued to eat his celery first. He had never liked the school's food, so he was hoping that the pizza would taste at least okay. He looked up at Tegan when he started to say something again. He mentioned Jacob and Quin looked down. Quin had gotten the feeling from the first time that Jacob looked at him that he didn't like him that much. He just never knew why.

"It's okay." He said after a moment. After all, he knew Tegan couldn't control how Jacob reacted. He was just glad that Tegan didn't hate him.

He felt the corners of his mouth drop as the boy uttered his words. He knew an apology wouldn't fix the harsh judgment of his so called 'friend' but at least he tried.

He went back to his food, gaze falling across the faces of their gawking audiance. He absorbed their features, their names foiling around in his skull with grace. He almost didn't notice when a boy with strawberry blonde hair went out of his way to take a seat next to Quin. He didn't seem malicious, in the least, but the way his crystal-blue hues fell along Quinlan's face made the white-haired male's anger peak.

The strawberry blonde cleared his throat. "Hey, Quin. How've you been?" It was a boy from his second period orchestra class, he played the cello. The young ,an s name rang clear in Tegan's mind, Xander Gregory.

Tegan refrained from teaching his long arms across the table, and clipping him in the jaw. But his intentions hadn't seemed malicious, so why was he feeling the need to attack? Was it because the boy was tresspassingb on his territory? Was Quin really his to own?

Quinlan had actually managed to ignore the other students staring at them by looking down at his tray. However, that meant he hadn't seen the familiar boy sit next to him. He hadn't noticed until he spoke. Quin looked up quickly, almost scared. Then it turned to slight confusion. They'd been in the same classes since third grade and never had Xander spoken to him before. Why now? He wasn't sure what to say or do.

"U-Um..." What was he supposed to say? "O-Okay, I, um, I-I guess." His voice was quiet, barely audible over the cacophony of the school cafeteria. He still didn't know why Xander was talking to him, but it seemed innocent enough.

A smile so read over the ale boy's face, crystal hues lighting up. "That's great. I heard people were giving you a hard time." He said, his voice soft. He rested his chin on the table, looking up at Quin from under blonde lashes. "I just want you to know, I am always here if you need to talk." As he said this, his hand rested gently across Quinlan's arm, making anger swell more under Tegan's collar bones. His fist clenched tightly, his fingers trailing up to Quin's nape, eyes like daggers.

"Thank you, Xander." Tegan said sharply, teeth gritting together.

"Oh, same for you too Tegan." He uttered politely, producing a rainbow card from his pocket and sliding it across the table. "We have a club meeting every Friday during lunch. The LGBT would love to welcome you with open arms." The words that fell from his thin lips almost made the white-haired male choke on his own breath.

Did he think they were gay? Tegan wasn't gay, he was normal. Quin wasn't exactly a female, but he was close enough, right?

Right?

"Thanks, but no thanks." Tegan sneered, picking up the card and putting it in his mouth. He chewed the paper up into a big sloppy clump and then spit it on the floor, showing his reluctance. "Scram."

Quinlan was a bit shocked at what Xander was saying. He really meant it too, Quin could see it on his face. He was the first person besides Tegan to show that he cared. His face went red at the feeling of his hand on Quin's arm. He felt Tegan's finger's trace up his back to his neck. He was about to thank Xander, knowing it was the polite thing to do. Even if he never took him up on the offer, he should thank him. However, Tegan spoke first. He didn't sound happy.

Quin looked up at him for a moment before Xander spoke again and he looked back at him. He wasn't sure if he ever would go there, but the offer made him feel just slightly better. He'd never thought of joining clubs because he never thought they'd actually want him there. He had never thought anyone wanted him there and it was nice to hear that one place would welcome him. Although Tegan spoke first again.

Quinlan couldn't help but feel bad. He stared down at his own hands, saying nothing. He wanted to let Xander know that he really did appreciate the offer, but his words got stuck in his chest and nothing came out.

When Tegan popped the card in his mouth, Cabrera's eyes widened with fear. What kind of person did something like that? "Well you could have just politely turned me down." He sneered, his hand still along the other's shoulder.

Tegan stood abruptly. "Hands off, pal." He gritted his teeth harder, whale threatening to crack under the pressure.

The blonde shot his hand back to his side, mouth agape like he was about to speak. "You have my number, Quin. Don't hesitate to call if there's a problem." He said 'problem' sharply making sure to pin his eyes on Team as he did so.

"Are you trying to imply something?" Tegan asked, chest puffed out. This made the boy began to shake his head side to side quickly.

"I think you were." The green eyed male snapped, his senses on high. He'd forgotten that the smaller male was in the room, concentration pinned on trying as hard as he could not to lunch the kid square in the jaw.

Quinlan wasn't sure what to do as the two of them went back and forth. He was afraid that they would start to fight. He didn't want that to happen. He noticed just how on edge Tegan seemed. Looking back at Xander, he seemed scared now. It took Quin a moment, but he managed to say something.

"Tegan." His voice was still quiet as he turned back to him. "It's okay." He told him. He had to get him to calm down. Maybe Xander would decide to leave. Quin felt bad for thinking that way, but him staying wasn't helping the situation.

After a long pause, Tegan let Quin's voice fall over him. He stared down at Xander, watching carefully as the boy left. After he disapreared into crowd, did Tegan finally sit. His head fell in his hands, fingers rubbing over his snow-white brows. "I'm sorry." He murmured, dropping his hand over the back of Quin's. He glanced down at him with shame in his eyes. "I don't know what got into me. I just snapped when he touched you."

Quinlan was relieved when Tegan seemed to relax. Then he apologized. Quin thought there was a bit of shame in his eyes, but he wasn't sure. He lightly held Tegan's hand after it had lightly fallen onto his own. "It's okay." He told him again. He guessed he could sort of understand why Tegan felt that way. He wasn't sure what to say next, but he wasn't Tegan to feel better.

Leaning in the boy wrapped his other hand around Quin's cheek, moving so his face was inches from his own. "I can't bare to think of you with someone else." He mumbled, breath falling over Quin's small lips. He stared deep into his darker green eyes, taking in his features as he leaned in closer. "You have this power over me."

Quin's face grew a bit red when Tegan's hand held it. His words made Quin's heart flutter a little bit. He never thought he'd hear anyone say anything like that. He looked back into Tegan's eyes. His heart beat faster when he leaned in closer. Quin truly forgot about everyone else in the cafeteria, he didn't care about what they thought at the moment. After a moment to let Tegan's words reach his head, Quin closed his eyes and slowly leaned in the rest of the way. He felt his lips softly meet Tegan's.

Surprise suck into his throat when Quin's lips met his. A gasp forming in his throat. He locked his fingers around the nape of the boy's neck, wrapping his hand in his soft brown locks. He didn't care that people were gawking, some pointing, while others looked away in disgust. The sound of chattered speaking draining around him. Their voices blended together, beating around his ears without penetrating the space around the two. He moved his lips with Quin's, his tongue grazing over his bottom teeth.

Quinlan's heart skipped a beat when Tegan started to kiss him back. There was no one else that mattered right now, Quin felt like they were the only two in the entire world. His arms slowly wrapped around Tegan's neck. He felt Tegan's tongue and his face went a little more red. Although he didn't care. He just lost himself in the feeling.

After a few moments of kissing this boy passionately, a small tap was emitted to his shoulder. He broke away from the kiss, his eyes now like daggers as he glanced up at a teacher who had broken off the small scene. "What?" He asked sharply, all feelings of joy draining from his body within moments.

"Public display of affection is not tolerated in the mess-hall" the gray woman droned, her brown eyes like dead bugs.

"What about them?" He asked, pointing to a couple with their bodies rammed together, the man's hands wrapped tightly in the girl's brown hair.

"Well, they haven't received any complai--"

"Shut up." Tegan snapped, rising to his feet. "You have a problem with who I choose to kiss? Is there a law against this?" He asked, but cut her off before she could say another word. "Don't talk. Your voice is fucking annoying." He growled, and then grabbed hold of Quinn's hand. "Shove your 'warning' down your throat, Miss Gretchin because I don't give a rats ass about what makes you uncomfortable. Discrimination of a student because of their sexuality, race, and religion could be the deciding factor of whether you keep your job or not." He sneered, tugging the smaller boy with him.

"Let's go Quin, before I have to beat the shit out of an old lady." He said this as he pulled the smaller male with him out of the mess hall, leaving a very awe-stricken teacher gawking at the back of their heads.

Tegan pulled away from the kiss and Quinlan wondered why. He looked up to see the teacher and his head tipped back down, burning red for a new reason. He was so embarrassed, not exactly that they had been seen, but that someone told them to stop and everyone clearly saw it. He still didn't like knowing that everyone could see them and notice them.

Tegan seemed to be getting very upset while Quin sat there, not able to even try to say something. Then he felt Tegan's hand around his and he looked up at Tegan. He seemed taller when Quin was sitting down. He gasped quietly when Tegan tugged at his hand, he had no choice but to stand up.

As they exited the cafeteria, Quin kept his eyes on the floor. He managed to stay close to Tegan as he pulled him from the room. He could feel people looking at them again but he didn't want to know how. It felt like most of them had a look of disgust and it made Quin feel upset. Although he was glad to be out of there when they made it to the quiet hallway.

He wrapped his arm around the other's shoulder, pulling him close. He scanned the hallway, satisfied with the lack of persons. He could feel the tension from the cafeteria disperse as they walked away. "Don't think about it too much. Karma will play its part. They'll get what's coming to them." He said softly, his mind flashing to the mental map of the school that sprawled in his brain. His throat closed tightly, hoping with all his being that Quin would be free from this torment soon. He knew that disapproval could take a toll one one's psyche, and he would never wish this kind of mental turmoil upon even his worst enemy. Though he would gladly slice down anyone who spoke badly of the boy in his arms.

He turned sharply, facing the small boy, his eyes drooped slightly. "I won't let anything happen to you." He breathed, a slight pang of guilt in his voice. He was the reason this boy was uncomfortable, scared, and being teased relentlessly.

Quinlan felt better when Tegan pulled him close. He seemed to feel safer next to him, like nothing bad would ever happen again. Then Tegan said something about karma. Quin bit his lip a little bit. Sure, he wished they would stop judging them, but he didn't want anything bad to happen to them. That wasn't the sort of person he was. Even though he knew the world didn't work that way, he couldn't help but hope one day it would start.

When Tegan turned to face him, Quin looked up. He could hear guilt in Tegan's voice, but he couldn't figure out why. He didn't see any of this as Tegan's fault. It was just the way things were and, hopefully, people would just start to ignore them instead. Quin wrapped his arms around Tegan's neck, standing on his toes a little bit. "Thank you." He said quietly.

He nodded gently, the feeling of Quinn's arms around his neck giving him solace. The flower bloomed in his chest again, making him feel warm. He planted a kiss along the other's forehead before glancing at the clock above them.

The bell rang, making him sigh.

Bodies flung themselves from the mess-hall, following with their bodies as they passed. Tegan moved so that he was shielding the small boy from the sea of humans. Their ignorance making his jaw set. They walked along the lockers, weaving through the crowd and coming to their metal tins. "I won't be going to Biology. I have some things I need to take care of." He said, his face inches from the other's. "I'll walk you to class though."
