Saga of the Seven Sins - The Second Cycle

If he posts a shaping defense I'd say it wouldn't work. If not, then you could shape his perception. As for your artifact, it seems okay. It's powerful, yes, but it's tame compared to the stuff some of the NPCs and antagonists have. He could just spend motes on his surprise negator and then everything would be fine.

Hey Seeker, you mentioned canon Solars? Feel free to have them recognize me, since I mentioned Viktor coming into conflict with some Solars in his backstory.

They can give Darian and Viktor something to do so they don't have to sit around while Renost and Opal miss each other endlessly. ( ;) )

Pretty sure you can still attack blind, @Rykon. It's a fairly small penalty, too. You should roll to resist poison, just to see if it affects your DV. You'll probably make it.

Oh, wait, are you deactivating Scarlet Patterned Battlefield Form?

Also, where does your Hardness come from, again? Orichalcum Sheathing Stance only adds +12 B/L Soak.

Oh, of course. The rewrite seriously buffed that Charm.

Right, last of the endless quintuple posts. I just realized you did a seven attack flurry without a multiple action Charm before I attacked you. Your DV was at -7, and effectively 10 (+2 for Hardness), meaning a lot more of those attacks hit. Ugh. I'm going to go back and figure out what actually happened before I write my next post.

Yeah I'm changing forms, so agg goes away, but I get a noticeable mote discount on my combat utility kit.

They missed because I burned Sword Resplendency Endurance to negate the penalty.

Oh, I actually just got harder to hit despite that reduction in DV. You'll see why =]

Oh, of course. I forgot it negated all penalties. Okay. God this is confusing.

Alright, 20 attacks. Tell me which ones to roll for. Almost certainly none have Unexpected - pretty sure you can beat 5 successes on Wits+Awareness.

Wait... you're going to add your Martial Arts to your DV, but that surely means Martial Arts to your DV pool. Which means adding Essence to your DV pool as well. Your Dodge DV wasn't 15, it was 12, equivalent to your Parry DV.

So anything with 16 hits or more got to roll Overwhelming.

No it means adding to the DV otherwise it's almost as bad as an excellency

The other factor boosting Parry DV over Dodge is that I have Perfected Kata Bracers that add Essence to the defense pool.

The form is free once you put it up. I'd hardly call that as bad as an Excellency. Iron-Arm Block is an Essence 1 Charm that costs half as much as the equivalent Excellency and it's action long. Surely you don't believe it's 1/4 the cost of the Excellency and action long for Essence 1. Not even Solar Charms are that good.

Depending on where you look, yeah, they are. There used to be a perfect success for a willpower charm in the Solar set.

Aha, but even Solars can't increase their DV pool by more than Attribute+Ability. Sidereals can explicitly cheat with Essence Auspicious, but are probably ordinarily capped at Essence additional dice to DV pool from Charms, just like I can't gain more than Attribute extra dice to my DV pool from Charms. So your Dodge DV can't exceed ( Dodge + Dexterity (+ Specialty) + Essencex2 ) / 2 = 12, no matter what you apply to it. Stunts and the defensive value of weapons explicitly can exceed this limit.

My Dodge DV can never exceed ( Dexterityx2 + Dodge (+ Specialty) + Essence ) / 2 = 14.

Aside from excellencies, success additions don't count to dice adding pool. And the no matter what is actually limited to charms specifically.

This seems suspect. I don't buy that an Essence 1 Charm adds successes and not dice, thus bypassing the hard limit on DVs. Adding non-Charm successes is a big deal.

Almost all of Scroll of the Monk was copy/pasted from 1e, where there was only a DV dice pool. Read in that context it seems obvious what the author once meant.

Charms that add automatic successes or remove penalties do not count as increases to a dice pool unless otherwise stated.
That is page 185 of 2E core. And if we are going to hold all of these martial arts styles accountable to connotations from 1E, which I've never played, than I would like to reallocate pretty much all of my martial arts charms. Alternatively I can remake, because we're hitting a point where a lot of ideas I had about how the character worked are being argued away in one form or another.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, or unpleasant. Scroll of the Monk is just the most... let's be polite and say contentious 2e supplement ever released. This has clearly become not-fun, so we should probably stop. It will be up to Seeker how he wants you to calculate your DV against NPCs. I don't think losing a few points from your DV would ruin your character concept, though ( ;) ). You'd still have a devastating build that almost nothing in the game can hurt meaningfully.

I probably could have been more diplomatic with my disagreement, but I agree about scroll of the monk. It's a pile of garbage that needed a ton of attention in the Errata and only the Solar charms got any. The lack of errata is increasingly unfortunate because that is where the bulk of combat charms reside (especially Sidereal ones).

However you guys want to wrap this up is fine with me. For my part, this is not too exciting to sit back and just watch. I want to get to the story, and see how badly I trounce some bad guys.

Got it, plot re-railing shenanigans ENGAGE!!!!

Oh and WarDragon, surprise negators won't work for this one. The roll determines how much damage you avoid taking. As it stands it's going to deal 25A damage if you fail the roll, bypassing soak completely.

Custom Essence 5 Solar archery charm. Unseen Corona Assault. There's a certain Canon Solar Archer with a really big hate-on for anyone related to the Yozis. Even people who claim to have left their service.

Ouchies. Without my defensive Charms up, that would insta-kill me. No offense when I say I'm glad that I'm not the target.

Wait, fuck. I overestimated your health levels. It deals 10A at first and you subtract sux from the Perception + Awareness roll. Channeling virtues are allowed.

I need something that catches your guys attention, but I might have went overboard. Sorry, serves me right for coming up with OP charms on the fly.
