The girls stomach growled loudly the second the food was in sight, and she tore into the food moments after the plate was set down. She had tasted similar dishes in her travels, but this cook seemed to have talent. Better than most of the meals she'd had, even at home. The wine, though not as high a quality of what her father kept at home, was still acceptable, and she wondered at why she had been sent here in the first place. Her hunger slightly sated, she took a long moment to eye the wench over, her appraisal was... slightly confusing. Though the wench made an attractive woman, there was something off about it, that in all honesty made her very curious.


"My compliments for you and the chef." She gave the wench an appreciative smile, and then turned back to her food, eating at a slower pace, not quite ladylike as her mother had taught, but perhaps with a touch more decorum than the men who were eating like pigs at a few of the tables around her.

"Pirate..." 








                “I shall be sure to pass your words on to the maker of the pie.” Alex smiled at the compliment, before a commotion took the wench’s attention away. Not that there was any sort of fear, or even anxiety associated with watching the oh so lovely fight. Instead there was resignation, and faint annoyance. “Oi! People stop getting into fights in the tavern.” Shifting around the handful of people that had bothered to look up, the wench leveled a glare at the orc, even if the tone was louder. At least the fight wasn’t with the elf Alex had been talking to earlier, even if it had seemed that way on first impression. “Anyone else who decides to spill blood, is getting thrown out.” The authority behind the voice spoke of someone used to people following the command given, even if they themselves weren’t the highest ranked. Glancing back at the knight who had so kindly drawn her frost back to a bearable level, Alex nodded slightly. “If you excuse me, it appears I have a mess to clean up.”

                Rather than fetch one of the men to help, or give any indication that Alex even thought to hesitate, the wench crossed to the pool of blood. Fortunately, the short skirt didn’t even brush the ground as the wench knelt. Perhaps the reason it was so short in the first place, although most thought it was more to appeal to the eye. The body was hauled up over the shoulder with all the care of a sack of potatoes, the handful that still stood in the way quickly retreating as the grumbling wench passed. “And yet ANOTHER dead body. That's the fifth one today!  What do they think I get paid for?  Scrubbing blood off the floor and furniture?  Do they think I'm their personal maid? I mean, I know I’m wearing a skirt but really. Do they come here to kill knowing that I'll have to clean it up?" At least this dead body seemed to have been a mercenary, meaning there was probably a good haul from the body. A guess that proved correct, the elf yielding a good amount of silver, even gold and a few other odds and ends. The body went off over the ravine behind the tavern, and after a moment to change over to a shirt that didn’t have blood on it, Alex returned.

Averel was more than a little thankful that she wasn't at all squeamish as she watched the wench cleaning up the mess. More than a few of the less drunk patrons were visibly gagging at the sight of the dead body. Glancing at the very drunk orc, and her companion that showed no more life than a doorknob, she called over the woman. "What exactly did he do to you to deserve that?" There was more than a little humor in her voice, and she continued eating away whilst waiting for a reply. The food was indeed quite delicious, and filling on top of that. She was honestly excited by the prospect of so many warriors around here, and thought to question a few of the older ones as to whether or not they would train her some, or at the very least spar with her once or twice. 
 
A commotion behind Callum made him turn his attention from the frost knight in the corner to a scene that could only be described as nearly prophetic.  Lying on the floor in a pool of his own blood was Callum's body double.  Was it a bad thing to watch your doppelganger die?  Callum stared for a few minutes before the tavern wench angrily hauled off the fifth dead body of the day.  It was getting later in the day and it appeared the number of bodies in this place was only going to increase.  Callum attempted to take a sip of his ale to calm his nerves after the ill omen, but found that his tankard was now empty.  He sighed and ran a hand through silver hair.  Buying another one would be a bad idea, but he felt like he deserved another.  To end his internal dispute Callum mentally counted what money he had left and resigned himself to staring at the other patrons.  Maybe he could convince the wench to get him a free drink out of pity.  He decided to ask the next time the wench was over by the bar.
 
ooc: Had no idea callum matched the profile. I was just going for the most generic elf possible. 


IC: 


Ellete turned to the attention. Not that of the little thing dragging the attacker away, but to the cute hum with the dark hair and hazel eyes. She gave her a bit of a smirk at the question, thinking at the slight hilarity of the situation. Regardless, cute woman, time to... Exaggerate herself and put on that sober mask.


"He dared cross I!" She exclaimed, standing upright.


"One does not do such, and survive."


She grinned, looking to the bar as a bottle of brandy was set beside her. She picked it up, took a swig, and began walking over to the maiden. She spotted an elf near the girl, and paused for a moment. He looked.... Ellete peeked over at the body as the tavern girl dragged them out the door then back to the live one. "Hu..." She thought to herself and continued forward.


"These types of ruffians try and bother me all the time." She went on, leaning beside the woman.


"Yet they never learn. It really is tiring, sometimes."

"Huh." She nodded. "Fair enough I suppose, though I'm relatively against murdering people if I can help it." She tried not to lean away, but let her frost creep a bit closer to the orc woman. She apologized silently to the wench who seemed so very against it, but she didn't like people that close to her when she was unsure of their intentions. Sipping at her wine, she aimed for a more casual appearance. "I also try not to make too many enemies, though that doesn't always work as planned."
 
Cocking a head when the orc moved, Alex shifted back behind the bar. At least there was an advantage to the amount of blood. No one really got roudy or annoyed with the person who had just recently picked up and carried a body off. Interestingly, there was also no comment on Alex being capable of lifting a body off the ground like nothing. Such moves had drawn accidental attention before.

Leaning with elbows against the bar beside the surviving elf, Alex smirked at the scene proceeding. The frost was...unappealing but all in all it should be entertaining to see just how oblivious the orc was. Not that Alex would be ignoring other people just to stare, the wench's head tilting to the elf Alex had addressed earlier. It was an angle that kept the orc and the knight well within sight.

The poor elf looked paler than before, Alex offering a slight smile. The hand farther from the elf drew up, playing through the roses that cascaded over Alex's shoulders. "You alright?"
 
Callum jumped when the wench addressed him.  He had been staring off into space and hadn't noticed when they returned.  Still looking between the orc and the ice knight Callum tilted his head towards the wench, "As good as anyone can be when faced with their own mortality.  I like to think that another drink will help me feel better, but I'm too poor to afford another."  At his last statement Callum turned to look at the wench pleadingly.  Leaning nearly off his seat he tried his best to get closer to the wench and played with his hair, trying to get it to catch the light.  He batted his eyelashes and did his best too look both pitiful and cute.

"Pirate..." 








                For a moment Alex just stared, debating on the consequences for following instinct and the urge for amusement. Then the pirate shrugged ever so slightly, and reached out to lay a hand gently on the elf’s shoulder. The elf had nearly tipped himself over already, and by the lovely law abiding people, was asking something probably unthinkable. So, Alex pushed slightly in the direction that the elf was already leaning, waiting to see if he would topple over.

                The wench’s free hand stayed mostly settled at the bar, although there was a flicker of fingers and a piece of silver spun across the bar top. Enough that should the elf fall or not, Alex stepped back to retrieve another mug of the ale, as well as some form of bread and cheese. "Not so sure you want another, given your tipping over drunk, but sure."

Ellete took a sip of the brandy then looked into the hum's eyes proper with a blank, if disappointed face. She leaned her head just a touch closer, eyes still locked.


"If you go through life without making enemies, you're doing something wrong." She said, leaning back away.


"And it'd be awful boring as well. "


She heard a slight sound, like ice chipping, which beoke her focus away from the girl long enough to see tge doplgangar pleading for a free drink or so -she oddly didn't notice the actual source of that chipping though - which made her shake her head.


She turned her attention to the barmaid then, gesturing her as she brought him what he asked. 


"Lass." She called.


"Don't take the risk for a poor elf, I'll cover it."
 
At the pressure on his shoulder, Callum started.  The small perch he had left on the stool slowly disappeared as he tilted forward.  One of his hands had been distracted by his hair and had been perched on the edge of the bar, so only the opposite arm waved frantically as he went toppling out of his seat.  The floor rushed to meet him, and Callum could only cringe as he thought about the amount of blood these floorboards had soaked up over the past 24 hours.  He hit the ground with his knees and shoulder.  "Ow." he called meekly, too embarrassed to look up.  He rolled his elbow and stood.  He heard something about someone else paying for his drink, but was already provided with a free drink, bread, and cheese.  A bright smile escaped him at the spread and he quickly returned to his seat to devour the meal.  He spared a glance at the wench to gauge whether he'd offended them, and offered a cheery "Thank you."

"Pirate..." 









                Alex had actually laughed, leaning across the bar to watch the elf pick himself up. Not a loud one that involved tilting the head back and being exaggerated about it. Instead it was a true laugh that started out being breathed through the nose and then when the lips parted it was a quiet sound not unlike that of some of wild dogs Alex had seen during childhood travels. Or maybe it was a sound like that of a raven or crow, the wench’s head tilting to the side to quiet the sound farther against the inner curve of the shoulder.


                The laugh was dismissed easily enough though, even if Alex continued to smile in amusement. Nothing really evil in it, although some could argue that the wench was fairly mean to be laughing and smiling at all, or to have pushed the elf off.


                A hand was raised to acknowledge what Alex had thought the orc said. Something about covering the elf. Or maybe it was the tavern. No cheering had followed though, so it was probably the elf. The silver piece that had in truth come from the one the orc slayed slipped back into the folds of the wench’s shirt.

She stared at the orc for a long minute, by now a sheen of frost was starting to spread across the wooden table, and her armor was fully covered in the frost again. She relaxed a marginal amount, the cold being more her home than any heat could be. "I prefer making enemies for reasons of justice, or politics, rather than making them because I slaughtered their entire village, or family or some such." She thought it was perhaps a bit rude, implying that the orc had killed that many, but most rumors? Orcs were brutal killing machines. That was what frightened her, the fact that this killing machine was that much larger and more skilled than her, and also entirely not against killing. Finishing off her glass of whine, she heard a slight rustle of wings as the snowy owl that had, at some point during the meal, made it's way into the building, swooped down to land on the back of the chair beside her.


Averel knew that the snowy owl was a rather odd pet, and brought a lot of attention to herself, but she had rescued it after one of the boys  from her town had killed it's mother and father. Almost entirely white, save for a vaguely heart shaped patch of black feathers on the middle of it's chest, and on the large end for his species. He was some six pounds, and his wing span was nearly five feet. At almost two feet tall he was a bit large to ride on her shoulder, but she would allow him to perch on the back of her rucksack when she was wearing one. She wondered how the orc would react as she called the wench back over.


"Would you be able to get some scraps of meat from the kitchen? He has a liking for beef but he'll take whatever he can get." A few more coins flashing in her fingers, smaller ones than the gold, and also very nearly the last of her small change. She'd have to find a bank later and trade a few gold pieces for the smaller pieces. She supposed the owl had come over to relish in her cold aura that had many of the other guests nearby pulling away from her table.

Ava picks up her empty cup and walks downstairs, the stench of blood fills her nostrils and she whistles "smells like death down here. Someone must have had some fun." She slides her cup along the bar and winks at the wench "I'll have another drink please. Oh and could you bring a meal up to the room I'm in please? Preferably warm." Ava didn't care what food she had, she had learnt to eat whatever was put in front of her when she was a child. After her village sas destroyed she would survive on whatever she found.

"Pirate..." 









                As Alex leaned against the bar again to wait for the next call, green eyes caught the bird that had entered at some point. It was a sight that had the wench straightening up, interest flashing through the green eyes. That the bird was in the tavern meant nothing to the wench. That the bird was among the predatory ones that could quite easily inflict just as much damage as a set of daggers also didn’t matter. Really the only thought that crossed Alex’s mind at the sight of the bird, was the urge to reach out and see if it would allow itself to be petted. Except to do that the wench would have to go around the bar, and towards the source of cold that had very visibly returned.



                For a few moments, Alex swayed in the spot, torn between the two desires. Then the partner of the owl caught the wench’s attention. The first response was a smile, and a light bob. That would give Alex the chance to gather the payment the orc had so kindly offered as well. The wench disappeared for a moment, hearing the call of someone else to get food as well. Returning with some of the scraps which mostly appeared to be the bits that were likely to contain small bone or other inedible pieces in a chipped bowl, as well as a tray that balanced a meat pie on it, Alex hesitated at the edge of the bar. For a moment the wench stood between the faint barrier and the cold, then took a deep breath and made quick work of crossing the room from the bar to the table. The scraps were set down and coin collected, before Alex moved off towards the knight from earlier who had contributed to the total body count for today. “To your room you said?”

"Yes please. I'd also like to apologise for before, I didn't mean for it to get out of hand like that. I hope the gold I provided you was enough compensation for a new table at least" she wasn't one for pointless murder but every now and again her hand was forced and there was no choice, she knew words didn't work on drunks and instead the best course was to take action. She hadn't meant to escalate to full blown but it was too late to think about now. Ava tucks a lock of blonde hair behind her ear and twists her ring around her finger a few times. She notices an orc and looks it up and down and makes no effort to hide her disdain. Her parents had always told her that orcs were bad news and if Ava was to hazard a guess, she reckoned the orc was the reason the air was heavy with the scent of iron. 


Ava eyes up the wench yet again, still not sure if the attractive figure was a female or just a very feminine male. It didn't bother her either way, she wasn't too picky when it came to partners. Ava considered herself open minded but she knew that others found it abhorrent because "the holy scriptures mention nothing about a woman being with another woman or a man being with another man." A priest had once yelled that at her after he caught Ava with a previous girlfriend, he'd ended up with a broken nose and a fractured jaw. Ava suddenly realises she's been staring at the wench for too long and feels the blood rushing to her cheeks "Uh...Uh I'd also like a drink too, strongest one you have please" she'd always enjoyed the stronger drinks as when her father had gone hunting with her he would always bring a small flask for them to share at night when the cold was just beginning to bite.

Ellete smiled and shook her head, looking away from the girl as she took a swig of brandy. A deep one. More of a chug really.


"Twas not a cause of justice." She said.


"Nor that of-."


She was cut off by the sudden entrance of a mass of feathers. A bird of some sort. What was it? An owl? Certainly seemed so. But she never did see one so white.


"Ooh, pretty bird." She muttered, instinctively moving her arm to reach for it.


"Hm?"


She looked down at her arm, it being held down by frost. She'd of thought it odd they didn't feel that, but the drink did tend to stave off the chill. She yanked herself free with some effort and peeked over at the woman she'd been talking to. Was the cold coming from her then? Must've been.


"Curious charm you have there." She said.


"A literal cold shoulder."

"I'm rather fond of my north. I've yet to figure out how you lot run around in full armor in this blazing sun and not melt." She chuckled a bit, allowing the cold to come back towards her, containing it in a small bubble around her. "The wench doesn't seem to enjoy it." Averel shrugged, watching as her bird gulped down the chunks of meat. Reaching out a hand, she stroked his back, resulting in a curious little noise coming from him, some facsimile of a cats pur if she had any guess. Sort of a 'hurr hurr' rather low in his throat.


"You might pet him, if your gentle. Just be slow as he doesn't always take to strangers." This she directed at both the wench that had been studying the bird, and if she hadn't been so thrown off by the ice, she likely would have tried then, and the orc that had tried moments ago. The drunk orc, though violent seemed like she might, almost, be okay, not that Averel was letting her guard down any time soon. She'd seen enough in this bar to realize that enemies were often closer than you thought, and anyone was liable to try and kill you.

Ava notices the owl and looks at it with curiosity "that's a very beautiful bird. I assume it's from the North based on it's white feathers." Ava's father had always done his best to teach her about the flora and fauna of the land. She shoots a glance to the owner to make sure they aren't going to stab her for remarking about the animal.

"Yeah, I found him when he was little. We've been friends ever since." Averel glanced at the girl, who seemed a slightly less intimidating person than the orc. "Snowy owl, his name's Flake, unoriginal I know, but I was like twelve." The bird peers up, twisting it's head around to look at the other girl. Averel taking the opportunity to scratch his chest. The owl makes a low churring noise, his way of saying hello, and ruffles his feathers some.
 
Ava smiles at the owl, elves had always had a way with animals and she liked it. People would betray you but a loyal animal wouldn't. She slowly reaches her hand out to pet the owl making sure not to move too suddenly, she speaks in a quiet tone "elves are connected with nature or so they say. I've seen a few elves speak to the Earth, it's amazing to see. But I find that the best thing about being connected to nature is that the animals trust me a lot easier than they would any other race"

She watches the elf with the owl. "Indeed. He's often a lot more aloof around strangers than he is around you." Though Averel had traveled across the land searching for people to train her, she had few chances to interact closely with elves. Most of them tended to avoid humans, or at least preferred not to interact with them. "How far have you traveled to be here?" She asks, curious to learn more about elves. And particularly at ease around the girl, as her owl is apparently comfortable with her.

Ava thinks for a second as her hand slowly strokes the snow white feathers "my village was a long travel south from here. I'm not sure how long it is distance-wise but it took me a week to get here and ever since then I've been making my name as a mercenary. What about you stranger? How far have you travelled to be here?" Ava continues to stroke the owl, she liked the way his feathers felt. She wasn't normally a fan of talking about her village due to the fact it was no longer there thanks to raiders but she seemed at ease with the girl and her owl.

"My journey was a rather circuitous one. I've been to most major cities and villages between my hometown in the far north and here, stopping to train here and there as I found swordsmasters whose skills were greater than my own." Her fingers found the pommel of her sword. A fine piece of iron passed down to her by her grandfather. She always kept it sharp, clean, and well taken care of. The pommel was relatively plain, though scratched. "I've been traveling for nearly ten years." It had taken her a long moment to determine the number, and she sat slightly surprised at that. "It's been ten years since I left my home."
