Other Roleplay Pet peeves

When there is not an active discord or offline chat. Roleplay is social for me and if I cant make a personal connection why am I writing with you? A lack of socialization kills roleplays always. I mean in my experience of over 25 years of roleplaying.

Every.Single.Time.

I mean even when icq aol skype were popular this has always been the case

For me too much and too little planning gets my interest declining real fast. Too much planning is the every day back and forth communication about our characters ranging from their families, possible future children, and blood type. Or a scene by scene discussion of what should happen from beginning to middle to end. Words to be spoken, the list is endless.

Then there's the way too little planning where it feels like I'm sleep-deprived and swimming in an ocean at night just to get the other person to give me ideas of theirs on our joint collaboration. It's frustrating.

Lastly, the opener of a roleplay. The unwillingness of some to even contemplate doing one. I get that it has to make sense for whichever character to start or sometimes it doesn't matter but to not even want to try and then leave it for me to do.

I will never understand why people reach out to me to rp just to ghost me the minute we have an rp idea. I’ve been on this site for a while now and it is unreal how often people just ditch the rp with no heads up or warning whatsoever. I’ve also had people get mad at me for only putting a three sentence response. If I don’t have anything to go off of, obviously it’ll be a shorter response. I will be in the middle of the rp, or ready to start it and then never get a response back. It’s so frustrating. After a month of no response, I give up. The. There’s this one guy who didn’t respond for six months before finally replying, and goes sorry I took so long. You took 6 months! I thought you died!
Nah cause same i get very nervous and automatically assume someone ghosted me when they dont respond to me after awhile lately i have had no luck with Finding a roleplay partner ive had Infuriating rp partners in the past to the point my roleplay rules etc may seem strict but from Experience i have to literally shout my requirements out cause i gotten people who dont read my rules and ask me wanna do a nsfw rp or other stuff like Bruh? I feel like in the next 10 years AI roleplay will be where everyone goes to to roleplay

There's a lot but the ones that recently experienced were regarding godmodding in writing and writing partners invading personal boundaries.

Long responses

People writing 5+ paragraph responses, sometimes even four can be too much. I understand the want to have amazing writing and detailed scenes but seeing bloated text like this can be daunting. I'm willing to give leeway for openers because they're meant to establish the tone, setting and potential world building. But If I'm trying to get a feel for the writing expectations and everyone is sending in essentially a rough draft of a thesis paper, I'm going to sit this one out.

Competition

People having to compete for character roles. It's very disheartening to watch role-players put in the effort to make a character, get excited for a role and then be denied that role because someone made one more to the OP's preferences. It's more fair to simply be first-comes, first-served.

Writing Sample

I've never had writing samples, so I'm not sure why this is a thing. Roleplays are so vastly different in tone and writing, how do I know if the sample I send in is even going to fit the current story being crafted? How do you judge a writing sample, anyways? If they meet the sentence and grammar criteria, what does it matter? Is the OP going to deny someone access based on their biases of what they deem is 'good writing'? That sounds very snobbish and unapproachable.

Boundaries

People not respecting my boundaries. This is my biggest one because it happens so frequently. I suppose this also falls under the god modding issue, as I've roleplayed with others who would suddenly and graphically hurt my characters. I've on numerous occasions had my character's be assaulted, also quite vividly. I doubt that this is a common occurrence on a website like this but just preferencing I don't like it.

I agree on all of these terms ^^

I'm pretty sure the host or whoever would be giving you something the main genre would be about, though I'm not so aligned with having writing samples anyway either.

i will stay right here and right now i learn role play by the paragraph style so i am a guilty offender of this but i do try my best to separate them, i tend to steer away from role plays that requires the intense amount of grammar and punctuations, it's not that i can pull it off semily confident enough and but i use voice to text and am very self conscious about that like i personally can't pull off that rule well but it's more so not a pet peeve.

but i guess here's some things i personally would like to see more i'm attracted to,

i'm going to use monster hunter stories as a example, but i hate where we're only made to make a set team and we only used that team, a big part of monster catching games it's using a variety of them not used the same ones over and over.

i know i mentioned this before but i always love when someone gives a reason for a character's personality and behavior, especially when a character behaviors changed throughout the role play these fully going back to the same stick build, or reasons why a character might be unlikable and destructive because something in their life and their path played out that way, is it bad to stick to the same build the whole time? no but i find it more fun when a character may do something out of character or gain the trait that they didn't have before for understandable reasons, or some plan to role play they were geared off the wrong path possessed hypnotized anything along those lines as a good reason for why your character is suddenly against the allies when they were allied driven before, you can't go to this person was a great member to the team to lol i'm gonna stab you in the chest now.

also this may be a me thing but i hate it when characters are made around a job but then their personality and behavior would realistically make them horrible at their jobs, but this can work in favor and i would actually like to see more of a character that is purposely meant to be bad at their job, i'm not saying the character can't have the job but it does feels weird and unnatural because it doesn't fit with their personality at all, or maybe to character was unfortunate and they had to find themselves getting a job that they don't do good in, instead of having them flawness how about you focus on the flawness and do something interests about it.

i also hated when role are restricted as i understand one for leader commander anything like that, but why can't you have more than two headed commanders, i really don't like it when people get denied for a role that isn't really that important in the long run because what it really hurt for them to be given a role for one that isn't super duper important.

i'm well aware that i'm not the best role player by a long shot even if i have experience, but i do try my best with everything that i post as role play are my productive time waster and i need a time waster, spelling and grammar are not my strong suits the lot of the time but hey it doesn't stop me.

also i am a biological sex female with combie ADHD so saying i'm chatty is understatement and it's not very hidden with anything i write or do.

I don't think being a woman, cis or otherwise, makes people talkative since there's a lot of variety between women.

Anyway though. Characters being bad at their jobs can definitely be interesting, especially if it's not a super competitive job or the person is good at one part and bad at another, so it's still realistic they wouldn't get fired. (Or maybe they do get fired, that can also be a story.)

actually it can be a symptom for women because women and boys display ADHD differently usually, does it affect everybody? no, I just happened to have the hyper talkative symptom and it goes very undiagnosed women because of the different symptoms and it took me 21 to even be diagnosed.

When your character is almost forced to be a sideline character whether 1x1 or group, bc of a single character in power who dictates what happens. What if this powerful character doesnt like yours? Sucks to suck because you can't do anything or else "nooo you're godmodding. You're being meta. Noooo you can't do this bc x y z."

Like dang, can my character do ANYTHING in the story??? lol

The group I write with started with a couple people leaving a site 10 years ago, because the admin wanted his character to have all the cool moments and would tell other people they couldn't ever land the finishing shot on an enemy vehicle, stuff like that. It was a pretty casual RP, so they flounced in character by observing that the admin's character clearly had everything handled in this battle with nothing left for them to do, wandering into the woods, boarding a random ship that was there and flying away.

OH, I get what you mean now! Sorry, I misunderstood and thought you were referring to the "women talk so much" stereotype. Interestingly, I know a trans woman who was diagnosed with ADD in her 40s and is so chatty.

I take no offense and I honestly love educating others when it comes to neurodivergence because then they can understand about others more who also have condition and not just me, also can I just say the roleplay that you just described sound like an acid trip I'm sorry but I come with random stuff all the time but that is just a whole new level lol

(OOC END)

maybe it's just societal standards. but i've noticed that girls are treated better than boys.
one time, my character, joye, got knocked out while trying to fight a guy. she was a girl. my friend on the other hand who was playing a boy got his feet chopped off and sold to the black market.

another thing that bothers me is getting asked to do NSFW content without asking me if i was even comfortable doing it in the first place, just...straight up throw me in.

also, i got lectured one time for "not being detailed enough" in combat roleplay so that's nice.

🤣 Yeah it kinda brought new meaning to "metagaming". Although it was at least in a setting that has spaceships.

We've stayed true to our roots. One guy in particular, one of my favorite people to write with, has been abducted by aliens in a setting that does not have aliens (which we fixed by having other characters watch him fall down the stairs and hit is head so that it was just a concussion dream), and he just recently found a gorilla who chain smokes in the gang hideout we were trying to rescue somebody from. I think the most acid trip thing he ever wrote might've been the time he almost got tossed into Krampus's sack (an endless void with screams of naughty children echoing out) in a flashback to his childhood.

Hello.

If you are ever thrown into NSFW or asked to participate, please report it ASAP.

RpNation has a very strict "No NSFW/Sexual Content" policy in our Community Guidelines, and we will not allow such content in our space regardless of whether or not it's in public forums, onsite DM's, or in our Discord Server.

Additionally, if users are sending DM's asking for NSFW content offsite, please report that as well as we do not allow our space to be used for offsite NSFW recruitment.

Thank you.

GHOSTING!!! Is this not the worst thing? I've started some RPs, they were going well, and suddenly, my partners disappear. (One said he'd been sick and he was coming back. I said go get better...and he never returned. I really liked that idea and the Chara if crafted for it, so it's really disappointing that he just left. Admittedly, he was super new to the site. But he really seemed to be able to write and had created a cool character.)

People not using generally proper grammar and punctuation. I'm not bashing them if they don't know how to do it right. And sometimes there are typos and autocorrects, I get it. But when I know they know how to read and write, it annoys me. Also, when they miss things in my post.

Cannon chara. Why does anyone use cc? Who even knows enough about any cc to play as them? I can barely keep up with the lore of the show or movie or book to RP in that world, let alone play as a specific Chara.

Another one I was thinking about recently is GMs that are overly critical of applications.

Let me put this in context:

When I come across a game that shows signs of struggling, but the GM is still rejecting apps over trivial details then I move on.

There is nothing wrong with knowing what you want and having expectations, but don't let them be to your detriment.
