As I ponder my character, I'm still debating on which martial art I should take. I like Crane style, and Single Point Shining into the Void style, both of which use swords. I just don't know which to go with.

Well, if you are going to go with a more studious character, Crane style is more defensive in nature, and whilst I love Single Point style it is an essence drain paying for two attacks per initiative round.

You have plenty of time. gmimperfecti gmimperfecti needs time to get a look at the Sidereal book to lock in a concept and play with some numbers.

Just to let everyone know, I've been approached by gmimperfecti gmimperfecti asking to get into an Exalted game. With Chowlett Chowlett taking his time getting his character made up, I thought this was a good way to start the game up and then he can jump in as his time permits.

Psychie Psychie why not introduce yourself to gmimperfecti and start discussing backgrounds?
That's fine. I have been taking a while! The run up to Christmas has been quite busy, combined with wrapping my head around Sidereals again. I am getting there, though, so if you're happy to run with three I should be able to join before you've gone too far.

FWIW, gmimperfecti gmimperfecti , I'm looking at an energetic wanderlusty Journeys who does McGuyver style rapid field crafting, including improvised weapons. I may dabble a bit in Endings and/or Larceny.

I'm also debating Martial Arts (and whether I have room!) - was also considering Crane and Single-Void. Psychie Psychie I thought you'd gone for VBoS?

I had originally picked Violet Bier for my combat style, but with Reyna being more a teacher and researcher with a scattering of sorcery tossed in, I am wondering how well VBoS will fit my mental picture of her. Crane style is more defensive in nature, so I'm partially considering that one instead. I could go the other way and keep a more martial style and say one of the things she does is teach members of the Cult of the Illuminated how to fight with her chosen style.

Psychie Psychie Either approach is valid. You can be the quiet bookworm that can explode into violence when threatened readily enough, or a more defensive player. Up to you.

I might actually cut a few Charms and pick up a second martial art style. I have to think about just what I want Reyna to be.

I was thinking a social focused tank. A flashy/defensive Martial art. I had a dream last night about the character. They're name was Between. And really excelled at understanding and manipulating relationships between things.

Is Peacock style any good? It has both the showiness, defensive, and distracting elements I’m looking for. I’m inclined to take it

It mostly messes with onslaught penalties, allowing allows to stealth and restrictions on opponent movement through zone bands
Cool. Speaking of cool, I went ahead and dropped a couple of spells and Charms to pick up Crane Style up to the Form Charm. I'm keeping my VBoS Style, just adding to it a bit.

They really phoned in the merits for Sidreal. In my old Sid book they went into elaborate detail with alternate merits and how they worked in Yushan. Now it’s just like you can get a pattern spider familiar if you want. Resources are there too.

Through the first pass, just trying to weed out charms.

Given the sparseness of artifacts in cannon, is it okay if we find an artifact we like and just swap it over to be star metal? I'm looking at armor and hearthstones currently.

Is it okay for Sids to have Manses in Creation? Or can you have elemental Manses in Yu-shan (like Wood, etc.)?

The charm trees seem unusually unlinked as well. I'm finding, building mini charts for the ones I'm interested in, that they generally only go one deep, and there are loads with no prereqs or follow-ups.

Probably won't have any issues with tweaking an artifact to say it's Starmetal.

Yes to Creation manses, and as big as Yu-Shan is, yes you can have an elemental aspect manse in the Celestial City.

Are we using these rules to make character sheets still?

Use the Established Exalted Template from Dreams of the First Age.

Attributes are 10 - 8 - 7.

After you allocate your Training Abilities, you get 18 dots to spend in your Auspicious and Favored Abilities, with another 28 dots to spend as you wish.

Backgrounds get 20 dots.

You get 27 Charms, with one complete CMA for free. Any purchase of Sorcery or Necromancy gets you a Spell of that Circle for free.

14 dots in Colleges, with at least 7 in your five Colleges associated with your Caste.

7 dots in Virtues, with a starting Willpower of 5.

You begin at Essence 4, and I'm giving you 20 Bonus Points to spend.

I thought we were in the Bronze faction?
Faction: Gold

Doesn't only the Bronze faction get Backing 2 and Resource 3 for free?

We are using third edition, where you have 150 xp and 50 Sidereal xp. That puts you at Essence 3.

Afaik, the five free dots of Merits apply for either Faction.
