Who wants a random fun fact?
Did you know, that right after I decided on April's asshole nature, I actually toyed with an idea. I considered making everyone on the team insane EXCEPT her. Nathan would have been a complete psychopath, actually enjoying killing (I teased this, having her be the only one in the group who actually KILLS, though I later decided on just making it an unfortunate accident) and Amber was going to be... well... let's just say her backstory would've been revealed to be... a little different than what she said.
In the end, April would've learned kindness, and the irony would be in that the asshole was actually the only nice and sane one in the group. Even the Eevee (blanking out on if that's Orion or Darin) would've been crazy, though I never decided on how. Her goal would've been to protect the Zigzagoon and be a good influence so he grows up normally and healthy. The rest of the party, including Nathan, likely would've died at one point or another.
In the end, I changed this for a few reasons. One, the introduction of Arcanus. Through him was an agent to bring about April's reform, so instead of happening very slowly (during which time, elements of the insanity of the others would have began to crop up,) it happened, comparatively, rather quickly. I wanted April to become good again around the same time as the big reveal(s), but I wanted the reveals to be mid to late game. So since April was reforming quickly, it began to seem less feasible.
Second is that I just fell in love with the characters. Nathan's tomboyish but kind nature was just way too much fun to write, and Amber's sorrowful but ever maternal personality was beautiful to me. As time went on, I just couldn't stand the thought of perverting that. So in the end, I forwent that twist and just decided to have them be earnest in their personalities.
