July 7 — Berry Farm, Rivière Walk (Route 7), Kalos

Did he catch that right? Monty knew Cyllage was a long way off, but hearing '258 kilometers' out loud killed some small part of him deep down inside—and just when his legs were getting better, too!

Still, another part of him was getting restless. There really wasn't anything left for him at the farm. He'd gotten paid, he'd made progress with Abné, and the pass through Connecting Cave was supposed to be open. The route forward was clear and the day wasn't getting any younger, and if they left now they could at least get a head start on whatever traveling they'd do tomorrow.

Esther on the other hand seemed more than content to sit around, despite her get up and go! attitude. If she wanted to bluff, he was more than happy to call it.

With a shit-eating grin plastered across his face, Monty stood up from his backpack-seat and scooped a now-fussy Abné up into his arms.

"No time like the present, right? My site's already packed up, slowpokes."

Esther’s 『Glare』 was a very potent status move; however, it didn’t seem too effective on Monty. He must’ve had 『Oblivious』 or something as his ability. With a groan, the Oblivian slid out of her hammock and turned to pack up. She didn’t forget to raise a hand over her shoulder and flip Monty a fat pidgey.

She would’ve liked to bathe or otherwise freshen up, but time wouldn’t allow it. A quick facewash and a few touch-ups to her hair was all she could afford. Five minutes later, Esther was ready to hit the road. Curiously, she had returned with a length of rope.

“Here, hold this…” She threw one end of the rope, which had been tied into a loop, to Monty. The other end was held firmly in Esther’s hand while she distractedly fiddled with one thing or another.

“Ready when you are… There’s a lake just short of the Connecting Cave and we can set up camp there and head through the cave tomorrow.”

The plan was set and Azumi was ready to go. She stood up, stretching her arms into the air with a soft sigh and a smile of satisfaction afterwards. She nodded in agreement with Monty's plan and a giggle from Esther's reaction. Despite the none stop trips back and forth from the day before, leaving the farm actually felt nice, as if their little adventure was finally going to continue. With a calm mindset, Azumi began to gather her things.

As the law enforcer in training put her backpack on, Esther came back with a camping site in mind already. The mention of the lake brought back the memory of the night before, dipping into the cool waters to release the arachnid Pokémon in hope to bring balance to the unstable ecosystem. She made a mental note to contact the rangers later on.

"I like the sound of that, could give us a chance to wash up a bit. Having gone so long without a warm bath and proper hair products is going to make my hair all fizzy." Azumi said as she grabbed a lock of hair and brushed it with her nails. "By the way, Esther, I've been wanting to comment on your hair style. I love it, it feels rebellious and stylish at the same time. I could never pull it off as good as you. It sort of reminds me of my brother." A small frown formed on her face as she finished her statement, but quickly replaced it with a smile. "It really suits you!" She ended with a clasp of her palms.

Once they were ready, Azumi prepared to follow, allowing the adventurous Lilly to be out of her Poke Ball. The Meowscarada stretched and sniffed the air before bolting ahead to scout out the area and probably mark her territory.

"Fuck me?!" Monty voiced Esther's gesture with mock offense and a shit eating grin that gleamed twice as bright as before. "You asked what we wanted to do, mademoiselle." Abné stuck her tongue out at the fiery-haired girl from her trainer's arms, and he brought the sassy Eevee up to his shoulder so he could do a quick double check of all his equipment before they got moving.

Five minutes passed by quicker than one of Oracle's Sucker Punches, and Monty and his team were ready with time to spare. He was expecting Esther to come back and make some quippy comment, or maybe blast him with her Surskit's <<Water Gun>> for the crime of annoying her (which was pretty funny), but instead she tossed the end of a rope into his hands.

The gangster inspected the loop, and his eyes shot to the other end where Esther was fiddling with...something or another—ominous. Oracle was still up in her tree, and Monty glanced up at her to see if she was getting a load of this shit. As it turned out, she was not paying attention.

"As long as there's not another swarm of Yanma, the lake sounds good." Monty had to fight the urge to shudder at the thought of another night in one of their nesting grounds. He snapped the rope in his hands taught a couple times and, still fighting the urge to shudder, asked, "And what's this for? You planning on dragging something all the way there?"

“Thanks!” Esther beamed and posed to display the orderly chaos of her messy bun. It was a bit of an ordeal to create an aesthetically pleasing mess, but it was aided greatly by the vibrant, deep red of her hair. It was a strong contrast to Azumi’s near-platinum blonde—really, their entire personas were somewhat diametric. Azumi carried herself in prim and proper style, but not overly terse or formal, while Esther’s style was more of a ‘classy’ goth.

In fact, by Esther’s assessment… “Don’t look down on yourself, I’m sure you could pull it off! Just make a few changes to fit your hair and viola~!”

The Oblivian coiled her red tips around a finger and appraised the gradient of her own dyes. She glanced over at Azumi’s much brighter hair; she didn't think her style and gradient would work for Azumi, but—“You could totally rock the ombre look; dark roots, keep it short and light—I’ve got some hair dye in my bag—if you wanna try...? I can show you some pics!”

It wouldn’t take too much dye to mix up Azumi’s hair, at least, it wouldn’t require a lot to do what Esther envisioned. She would definitely have to restock on their next trip to town, but though she was running low on dyes, it wouldn’t be a problem to help Azumi do a little image re-imagining. But then why stop at a bit of hair dye? Obviously, Azumi would need a hairstyle to fit her new hair. “We can do a fancier bun too! I think it’ll work better with your clothes—maybe even a side-braid? Or…”

Her voice hushed to an animated mumble... “Anyway, we’ve got plenty of time to talk! We’d best get a move on!”

Esther tightened her grip on the rope and gave the woven cord a quick whip, “Hiyah! Hiyah!”

Tethered to Monty by the rope and having fiddled around and secured her skates, this time it was her turn to direct a shit-eating grin at Monty—he was clearly her horse.

July 7th, That one farm, Kalos.

"Hmmm..." Azumi placed the tip of her index finger to her lower lip, trying to imagine what she would look like with a hair style similar to Esther's. For a few moments, she could see it.

Now only would she look more "cool", but she would definitely get more attention, like her sister. For once she wouldn't be the one in the back worrying about results and responsibilities. No, she would be the one having fun and talking to anyone she wanted, because obviously she would have a lot of friends. She would be invited to parties and she would actually go. Oh she could stay up late with friends having drinks at some bar and gossiping about other friends. Even at work maybe her boss would...look at her more...

"Maybe some other time, I don't think I should be experimenting with anything like that right before I start my new job. You know, we have to take our badge pictures and use the uniform, be presentable." She sighed, as if stressing herself out. "Maybe when I become a detective." She gave Esther a smile and placed her hands on her hips. "Now, get a move on monsieur Monty, time is of the essence. I don't want to have to bring out Roy to show you how to properly guide a lady like Esther."

Azumi smiled proudly at her attempt of a joke as she turned around and started walking towards the path leading out of the farm. Her heart tugged a bit at having missed the opportunity to do girl stuff with Esther, but she knew very well it wasn't something she would soon forget and might even change her mind sooner or later. Until then, Azumi was content to be part of the group, she couldn't wait to go home and tell her dad all about it.

Esther stole the grin right off of Monty's face, swapping his glee with the annoyed expression plastered on her face only minute ago. Given her...everything...he shoudn't have been surprised that she'd cooked up another hair-brained scheme, but she was sorely mistaken if she thought he'd be dragging her along for kilometers on end.

"Désolé, mademoiselle," Monty apologized as a sly, teasing grin edged out his irritated scowl. "But there's only one kind of free ride I give out." He snapped the rope taut, and pulled the tether back slightly before adding, "Unless you just want me to carry you like at the tournament?"

Were the details of their day of glory a little hazy since the celebration that night? Yeah, a little. Was it a cheap shot? Maybe, the specifics were hazy after all. Would it get under Esther's skin? If Monty was a gambling man, and he most certainly was, then it definitely would.

Esther sputtered, voice shrill with a mix of disbelief and rage. “Carried?”

The Pyroar, the witch, and the audacity of this bitch!

“By whomst, sir? You!?

Shamelessness came in many intensities but rarely had Esther seen, even online, someone as shameless as Monty! Had he somehow misremembered the events of the Shabboneau Tournament? Had he been so wasted that all the fights had blended together and he, somehow, rationalized that between his two Pokémon he had somehow fought his way through several rounds for tournament? Puh-Lease! By the later rounds Esther’s Pokémon had been working double time to keep the pressure off Chauff & Oracle, poor exhausted creatures they must’ve been, and yet the balls on this guy!

“Have you been drinking again? Not only was I the one carrying you in the tournament, but I also even had to carry you out of jail afterward!

“So you’ve got some nerve, buddy!" The Oblivian tossed her head and hair with a dramatic huff. Then she leveled her gaze on Monty, arms folded, expression smug.

"By the way, didn’t I just whoop your ass at the Chateau? Did you forget already? It’s okay, I can remind you!”

Pokéball in hand, Esther was more than ready to show Monty who really carried the bulk of the weight in their dynamic duo.

Details were so easy to get caught up in. So what, he got a little rowdy and Esther had to pick him up from the drunk tank? That didn't make him some degenerate criminal.

"No reminder needed, I know that was a big win for you." Monty dropped the rope and held his hands up in a gesture of mocking placation. "In fact, I don't think I ever congratulated you for finally evening the score after losing our first match." He took a step forward, and Chauffemagne stepped with him.

"If you want to end your streak that badly, though..." The gangster's steel gray eyes drifted up to Oracle, still perched in her tree but now watching with some vague notion of interest. Figures a battle would be enough to get her attention. Better call her dow—

"Ruff!"

Oh? Monty looked down at Chauffe, who was staring up at him with a fire in his eyes. He wanted to battle, huh? The Houndour didn't usually make requests...ah, what the hell.

Still grinning, Monty looked back at Esther. "Ready when you are mademoiselle, and don't hold it against me when you lose."

July 7th, Thursday - Rivière Walk, Route 7, Berry Fields, Kalos Region
Beatrice Esperanza Lazlo

Good, it seemed her attempt to diffuse the tension worked. Beatrice internally sighed a breath of relief as she listened to Esther explain the unfortunate backstory her Houndour went through. With that in mind, it's no wonder they would feel weird about forcefully capturing pokemon. "I see, I'm sorry to hear it went through that. I'll be more careful about what I say in the future." After that was dealt with, Beatrice followed Esther to the next part of her plan.
---
The farm slowly faded away over the horizon as Beatrice continued to follow Esther's lead. She had observed the other girl pick out a Combee amongst the swarm through what she could only guess was instinct then began leading the small group off of the farm's premises.

Once they were far away enough, Esther moved onto the next stage of her plan. The Paldean was asked to set up her drone as a failsafe; if things went poorly, they could still call for help. "Alright, I'll set it up now." The plan was sound, so Beatrice had Wattz fly the drone up into the sky to survey the area. The young woman then stepped aside to give Esther center stage, surrounding herself with her own pokemon in case things went awry.
---
The ensuing battle was quite a sight to see; amidst the massive chaos that erupted due to the lure of Sweet Scent, the Combee Esther had picked out performed masterfully as it weaved through the battlefield. As the skirmish neared its end, the situation was a bit worrying. While the horde of pokemon was greatly reduced, Beatrice's pokemon were all quite worn out as well, having been warding off attackers during the whole ordeal. Now, all they could do was hope that the Combee would gain enough battle experience to evolve like they planned.

The Paldean intently observed the battlefield when something caught the girl's ear. It was Esther, who's earlier hums has evolved into a song. Beatrice was at a loss for words, it wasn't as if the plan was guaranteed to succeed, the situation right now could go either way. Even so, Esther cheered the Combee on with all her might. How could she put so much trust in a pokemon she barely knew?

While she had her eyes on Esther, a sudden flash of light drew Beatrice's attention back onto the battlefield, the fruit of their labor had appeared.
---
Somehow, they had done it. The newly evolved Vespiquen hovered in front of them as the last of the gathered swarm finally dispersed. Esther's plan was a success, did she know this was going to work out or was it all down to luck? Whatever might be the case, Beatrice now saw Esther with a newfound feeling of veneration.

During the aftermath of their large-scale battle, a group of rangers had also been attracted to the scene. However, the results of the ordeal opened an unforeseen opportunity for the rangers. Using lingering scent trails, they were able to locate and quickly neutralize the heart of the Yanma infestation, bringing an end to the original event. It seemed their messy plan provided a rather neat conclusion to the whole situation.
---
It was evening by the time everything had finally settled, clearing out the traps Beatrice had set proved to be just as time consuming as when she first created them. Beatrice sat at her table with her Quaxwell next to her while Wattz flew across the sky in its drone form, making one last survey of the area. Beatrice observed the footage captured by the drone through her phone. "Good, it looks like this swarm problem has truly been taken care of. Those rangers really work fast." The young woman spoke out loud.

As Wattz flew by, the image of Esther and her group soon came into view. It looked like they were preparing to depart soon. "Oh, right. Now that we're done defending the farm, I guess there really is no reason to linger here anymore. I guess we should set off too, though I'm not quite sure where we should head next." Beatrice's eyes lowered. "Strange, even though I don't really know them that well, I don't think I would mind spending more time with them." She turned towards Vallace. "Isn't that weird Vallace? I mean, we only met them by chance after all." The Water type, in response, simply shook his head.

Then, without warning, the Quaxwell pulled his trainer by the arm until she stood up. "Whoa, what's wrong Vallace?" Beatrice asked, perturbed by her pokemon's sudden action. Vallace didn't react to the question, instead, he began leading Beatrice by the hand deeper into the farm. To where Esther's group currently were at. Many thoughts ran through Beatrice's head as she tried to understand what was motivating Vallace to drag her across the farm. Until she realized where they were headed to. "Oh, is this about saying goodbye to them? You don't need to be so forceful, I was already planning to go say farewell to them." She said, assuming she figured out her pokemon's intentions. Hearing this, Vallace shook his head again and let out a sigh. The Quaxwell was going to make sure his trainer expressed how she truly felt, even is she herself wasn't aware of it.

“Hmpf!” The sneer on Esther’s lips told Monty what she thought about that. Lose? Not a chance! The cool metal of Pyrrha’s Pokéball was all the colder against her skin—adrenaline, heart, battle approached. Esther tethered herself to that eager voice, a pulsating desire to test herself. She cocked her arm back, feeling for the shudder of anticipation she’d come to expect from Pyrrha’s Pokéball just before battle and—Oh…right! Pyrrha was sleeping! Esther hardly noticed; she was so eager to fight that she’d assumed Pyrrha’s eagerness had been right there alongside her.

Çiera and Susu probably weren’t in much better condition than Pyrrha, that melee with Combee had taken its toll on them. That meant Esther’s options were Pari, who didn’t much like to battle, and— “It’s your turn, Kasriel!”

The Galarian Zigzagoon took to the field, a bit groggy and sluggish after having just woken up himself. Esther knew just how she’d take care of that.

“Look alive Champ, the Lady’s watching,” the dark raccoon’s eyes snapped up to where Esther gestured, finding Oracle, and immediately shaking off the last remnants of sleep. His trainer tittered but was more than happy to motivate her Pokémon in whatever way she could. “Let’s give her a good show, eh?”

Chauffemagne

HUFF-HUFF-HUUUUFF!

A medley of scents flooded his nose— the berry-forest's sweet earth, the humans scattered around, their packs, and most importantly his prey. It bore a darkness, like he and the Queen, but it smelled of prey all the same.

He stepped forward past the Alpha and raked his keen eyes over the rodent. Prey weren't usually so eager to fight, but with the Queen watching and the Alpha expecting success he'd hunt it all the same. At least he didn't have to go through the trouble of running it down.

He took a deep breath and threw his head back to open the hunt the only proper way— "AROOOOOO!"

His <<Howl>> rang out, and he felt the familiar strength flood his muscles as wisps of smoke danced and licked their way out from his snout. It was time, the hunt was on, but where was his command?

"Chauffe,
<<Lockjaw>> into <<Fire Spin>>." There, there, THERE! There it was, his cue, his command! The Alpha words were simple, but they were what needed. He SHOT! forward, concentrating his desire to chase, to corner, to hunt down into his fangs, and they glowed black as he closed in on the rodent. A <<Bite>> that latched onto his prey to keep them from dodging a ranged attack? He could do that!

Rivière Walk (Route 7)

Esther’s eyes narrowed into happy, smiling moons. When it came to Houndour, she knew a thing or two: their moves, how they fought, how they could be beaten. That knowledge was beyond precious; an edge, and frankly, this battle was already decided. In that light, Esther admired Monty’s boldness—she liked a man who was a wee big for his breeches.

Esther smiled and welcomed the challenge, Trainer & Pokémon, with a cheery thumbs up; then, as Chauffe howled and rushed forward, Esther let the façade slip and shatter. Her grin grew wild, predatory; her thumb twisted downward—"Shut them up—«Parting Shot»!”

“Chaw-HAW-HAW! It ain’t nothing personal pup, my lady wants to win and my lady wants a show—” The raucous cackle filled the air, grating against all listeners with a sinister, demoralizing power. Kasriel was fearless as Chauffe charged. No... the pup didn't even have his attention. The bulk of that went towards throwing lala-eyes at the lady of his desire. However, this was a battle, and orders came swiftly. Kasriel reluctantly tore his eyes away from the expanse of silky white—sure to be as soft as it looked, he hoped to one day confirm—and settled on the battle. Doe-eyes faded as his expression matched his trainer's—“Muzzle him, «Headbutt» into «Pin Missile»!”

Half-inch claws punctured the soil. Kasriel was built for speed, acceleration, and traction—Why do you think they were called the Zig-Zag Pokémon? As Chauffe closed in Kasriel hit the gas, 0 to 40 in nearly an instant ready to smash his head into the incoming «Bite» saving little thought for whether the Houndour would flinch or get off his fire spin. It wouldn’t matter either way, a «Bite» wouldn’t have phased Kasriel and after Parting Shot, even the pup’s flames had been cooled—whatever the result, Kasriel’s fur was already bristling ready to let loose a point-blank Pin Missile.

Chauffemagne

With Chauffe's boosted strength from Howl dissipated by the rat's irritating screeching, his fangs were just sharp enough to meet its Headbutt head-on. The bout was quick, and when they met he used the momentum from the clashing energies to SPRING! backward and send <<Fire Spin>> FWOOSHING! forward to ensnare the rat in its flaming vortex.

Space control—that were his roles. From their first encounter the Queen had proven his vulnerability in close-quarters against an opponent with more options, but the Alpha had shown him how to use his flames to keep those opponents at bay. So when the rat gathered energy and unleashed its Pin Missle, Chauffe hardly needed to hear the call.

HHHUUUFFF!
"<<Ember>> volley, intercept!"

FWOO-FWOO-FWOOSH!

Chauffe sent a trio of low-power fireballs flying, and each one caught a Pin Missle with a resounding BOOM! A fourth and fifth went uninhibited, though, but when the Houndour dodged one he put himself in the path of another. The impact stung, staggering him and forcing him to grit his jaw through the pain, but the pain focused his mind.

He was ready. What was the next move?

Monty watched the clash with a grin, analyzing every step for an advantage he could seize. Chauffe's speed and accuracy training was paying dividends, even if a couple Pin Missles slipped through his defenses, and the way he saw it both Pokémon had come out of the first bout on about equal terms.

The battle was on a timer, just how Monty liked it, and though Chauffe had taken more damage it would even out in the long run. Still, they would need something more. Kasriel was caught in Chauffe's blunted Fire Spin, but how else could he use i—

Oh, that would be perfect. Thanks for the move, Esther.

"Chauffe, heavy <<Smog>>!"

The Houndour threw his head back for a deep breath and launched the purple cloud, and if Monty was right about his hunch then he'd really be able to pay Esther back for their battle at the Chateau.

He was just too predictable~ Should she be impressed or offended that he thought he could use her OWN tactic against her?

Her fingers snapped; Esther didn’t even need to think—

The flames burned all around Kasriel and the pup had taken his distance, lungs inflating with putrid smog. His lady’s orders came in a heartbeat— “«SNARL»”

Black and white fur flared, Kasriel was determined not to be outdone; the Zigzagoon inflated with air and then punched through the air with vicious sound waves. The smog scattered when faced with the deafening «Snarl».

The crux of Smog-explosion was to keep the smog dense. It was the same for all smoke explosions regardless of what particles filled the air: smog, flour, wood dust—density and concentration were the determining factors. After «Snarl» tore through it, Chauffe’s Smog was now much too dispersed to ignite in fiery fury. That wouldn’t resolve smog entirely, but without the concentration needed for an explosion, Chauffe Fire Spin was no fuse, but rather a purifier—burning up small clouds of smog before they could do much harm to Kasriel.

Esther felt like she was bullying Monty and she almost felt bad—Almost.

“«Parting Shot» then forward!”

She would press the assault, knowing that given Kasriel’s move pool offense and debilitation went hand in hand. She would cripple his offenses—they were half crippled already.

Beatrice Esperanza Lazlo

As the battle between Esther and Monty began, Beatrice and her pokemon also happened to arrive on the scene. While the girl's original intent was to simply say goodbye before they departed, this turn of event certainly caused a stir with that plan. "A live pokemon battle... Wattz, get ready." She commanded without a second thought. Right on cue, the Rotom flew closer to the battleground and engaged the drone's recording feature. Making sure to remain far enough to not get caught by stray attacks of course.

A pokemon battle between 2 trainers happening right before her eyes, now this was something to get excited about. The Paldean always got excited when she saw a pokemon battle, be it between some of the strongest trainers in the world during a massive event or a simple 1v1 between classmates, Beatrice was interested in them all. Tactics, battling styles, the way pokemon used their moves, everything about a pokemon battle fascinated the young woman. Because of this, Beatrice has a sort of hobby to record any pokemon battle she can, using them as study material.

Beatrice's glee was soon interrupted when she noticed the look her Quaxwell was giving her. "I'm still going to talk to them of course, but after this. It would be rude to interrupt their pokemon battle over something unimportant." She explained, causing a disappointed but understanding nod from her pokemon. It is true that interrupting a battle without a good reason would be very bad manners, Vallace understood that. With nothing else to do, the Water type pokemon stood by his trainer, watching the battle rage on alongside her.

"Tch." Why didn't the smog-explosion work? Was the fire not hot enough? The smog not dense enough? In truth Monty had no idea why it even worked for Esther in the first place, but she wasn't giving him any time to wonder. Recognizing the sound based moved which Kasriel launched, he spat a counter quickly; "<<Roar>>!"

Ever eager to follow an order, Chauffe planted his feet and let loose a deafening "RRRUUFF!" which thrashed against Snarl's soundwaves. Two days of battling the Yanma had at least taught Monty that sound-on-sound tended to cancel out, and the clash dispersed the Smog cloud just in time to reveal Kasriel hurtling toward his Houndour after firing off another Parting Shot.

Monty unclenched his jaw and barked another command— "<<Incinerate>>!"

Chauffe took a deep breath and sent the fireball FWOOSHING! forward, but with an output dampened twice over Monty knew it wouldn't be enough. Their battle of attrition was slowly being flipped against them, and by the time Fire Spin burned out it was likely Chauffe wouldn't be able to finish the job.

Heh. Way to force his hand, Esther.

Monty's grin returned. "Keep up the pressure, point blank!" Distance wouldn't work from here on out. It was time for a slug fest.

Chauffemagne charged in, snout smoking and flames spilling from his jaw. He'd spit more fire. He'd <<Incinerate>> the rodent down to ash.

Did Chauffe not… a small frown darkened Esther’s expression and her eyes swiftly flittered between Monty & Chauffemagne. Given the state of the battle, Esther had a sneaking suspicion her greatest concern might’ve been somewhat unfounded; however, the Oblivian knew better than to succumb to complacency. With Chauffe and Kasriel well on a collision course, Esther saw a chance to get in a cheeky lick.

“« Lick» !” Kasriel wasted no time, sloppy tongue ready to slobber all over Chauffemagne as they collided, and flames burned into his furs. The ectoplasmic saliva wouldn’t do much against another dark type, but it’s secondary effect of paralysis could widen his advantage. The pup wouldn’t last too much longer either way; enfeebled by the effects of Parting Shot, he just wouldn’t be able to match Kasriel blow for blow. Not to mention…well, his lady was a dastardly bitch. “Once more, «Parting Shot» “

“Chaw-haw, I hate to tell ya pup, but unless you’ve got an ace in the bag, you’re a finished, caput, done-zo, washed, ratted out—.”

Esther briefly wondered what kind of malicious maladies Kasriel cooked up with Parting Shot; did his words need to be intentionally malicious, or would the dark type energy turn even a compliment into a withering remark? Whatever the case was, he sure was yapping it up to Chauffe. Her earlier question hung in the back of her mind, but she sought answers. It was high time she tested the waters just a bit…

Chauffemagne

Chauffe's body seized and locked up upon clashing with the rodent, a feeling that territorial battles with Electrike in his home forest had taught him well; paralysis. His jaw wrenched shut for a moment, snuffing the flames he'd been charging, and the momentary lapse in control gave the rodent enough time to assault his ears with yet more innane ramblings.

With every word Chauffe felt the strength sap from his limbs, and the flames in his breast cool.

It made him furious.

The Houndour struggled to get his paws back underneath him, and from behind he heard the Alpha shout to him, "Get up, Chauffe! Finish it!"

He fixed the rodent with a glare and lunged forward, flames spilling from his jaws as he readied another attack. It said he was finished? He was just heating up.

With the number of stat drops they’d inflicted on Houndour, it would be neigh impossible for the Dark Pokémon to return to peak form unless it had Nasty Plot. And there-in lay Esther’s primary concern. If Chauffe knew Nasty Plot, it would be able to outpace her stat drops and eventually overpower them. Her ‘friend’ Houndour knew Nasty Plot and while it was obvious that their move pools wouldn’t be identical, the fact that it was within the realm of possibility meant Esther had to account for it. And in order to do that—

“Use «Rest» !”

It was risky, but she was giving Monty a chance to correct his stat debuffs. Kasriel would awaken before Chauffe could really run away with those boosts, but it would reveal to Esther what status-moves Chauffe had at hand. As for whether Monty would choose not to use a status-boosting move… Why would he not? Was he stupid? Did he think he could deal any meaningful damage when his Pokémon’s moves weren’t even doing half what they should’ve? No, recovering Chauffe’s stats was the only way for Monty to clutch victory from the jaws of defeat—if he didn’t it was either because he couldn’t or…maybe it was some crazy ploy to lure her into a false sense of security so he could flip the battle at the last minute with «Reversal» or «Counter» or who knows! Chauffe had already displayed an atypical move in «Fire Spin», what else might he was capable off!?

The answer—as it turned out—was ‘not much’. The great fire Pokémon was not blessed with Nasty Plot or Monty just didn’t call it, but by the time Kasriel awoke, Esther was sure the battle was hers. She ordered as much, “Finish it!”

From there on out there was little to her strategy beyond racking up as much damage as possible a task that became progressively easier as the battle dragged—paralyzed and weakened, Chauffe couldn’t outmaneuver the Zigzag Pokémon, and his «Ember» could no longer achieve parity with «Pin Missile».

That battle didn’t last much longer after that. Valiant though he might’ve been, the little Houndour couldn’t fight the tide of battle.

“Huh? What did you say the score was? 2-1!? In my favor? Wo~owza!” Esther was in a jolly mood, swinging Kasriel this way and that as she danced around. She tried not to gloat too much. Besides, although she’d defeated Chauffemagne, the real powerhouse of Monty’s team was… Esther settled, her eyes finding the proud white Absol.

The Oblivian was under no illusions, her earlier victory over Oracle was a product of the newness of the Smog-Explosion and Monty’s own unfamiliarity with Houndour’s moves. If they were to battle again…their chances were slim to none. With her moves and raw power, Oracle was well-poised to carve through just about every member of Esther’s team. Not that that deterred Esther in the slightest.

Esther’s attention returned to Monty, the defiance in her softening and triumphant glee taking it place. She tilted her head backward, her voice pitched to dramatic effect; once again, she held out the opposite end of her rope.

“As per the terms of our deal—Chauffeur.”

That wager had been added to the battle somewhere along the line…obviously, and Esther would make full use of it! And speaking of Chauff-esque words—“Do you mind if I scan Chauffe?” She waved her Pokétch in one hand while pilfering for a Cheri berry with the other.

The battle between Kasriel & Chauffe hadn’t been nearly as violent as the one between Houndour & Oracle; thankfully, their wounds were light and a PokéCenter wouldn’t be required. Aside from Chauffe’s paralysis, a few days of rest would take care of things. Once the Dark Pokémon was eating the berry from her palm, Esther could take the opportunity to give it a scan.

PokéDex Entry #0228 – Houndour said:
Houndour is an intelligent Pokémon that forms packs to hunt for prey and shows unparalleled teamwork and—

Skipped—she’d heard it all before, she wasn’t interested in hearing it again. With Monty’s approval, Chauffe’s Pokéball wouldn’t block her Pokétch from performing an advanced scan. That’s where the real juicy info would be.

PokéDex Entry #0228 – Houndour con’t said:
When compared to other Houndour, this specimen exhibits substantially thicker fur which may suggest the possibility of mane-like growth. When combined with its relative stoutness and musculature, it can be deduced that this Houndour descends from a Flareon parent. Low margin for error.

This Houndour is eligible to learn the following egg moves:
- Fire Spin
- Fire Fang
- Thunder Fang
- Nasty Plot
- Beat Up

A Flareon parent? Esther imagined Chauffe’s evolution—a Houndoom with a poofy mane of dark fur. Cute. After offering a few chin-scratches, Esther’s attention returned to Monty. “You didn’t use Nasty Plot during our fight, so I figure Chauffe doesn’t know it, right? Houndour knows it, I can…probably get her to teach Chauffe. No promises.”

Monty's grin slowly fell over the course of the battle, and by the time Chauffe was finally overwhelmed and KO'd his scowl was nearly strong enough to permanantly alter the shape of his face.

Esther got them again — hook, line, and fuckin' sinker. The number of options she had at her disposal, between all of her Pokémon and all of their movesets, weren't even the issue. It was her knack for applying them that had Monty's team on the back pedal now and the other day at the Battle Chateau. He'd seen her in action against other trainers and wild Pokémon more times than he could count by now, but it still surprised him how annoying of an opponent she could be.

"Yeah, yeah, 2-1, whatever" Monty grumbled at Esther's gloating, rolling his eyes as he crouched down next to his fainted pup. Chauffe put up a good fight, burning as bright as he could with Parting Shot extinguishing his flames little-by-little, but it still didn't sit well with the gangster to see the Houndour down for the count.

While Esther and Kasriel danced, Monty set to rousing his pup with some well-placed chin scratches. "Get up, pote."

Chauffe stirred, blinking wearily until he seemed to realize where he was. The Houndour leapt to his feet and his head snapped back and forth, searching for is opponent, and his trainer sighed in tired amusement and broke the news — "It's over, pote, you lost."

It seemed to take the pup a second to connect the dots, his black eyes snapping between the dancing girl and his own trainer, but the second passed he snorted and set to licking his shallow wounds. At least he wasn't too beat up, but knowing Chauffe his wounds were probably more internal than external. Monty'd managed to catch himself a prideful bunch.

Esther finally got tired of celebrating right when Monty got sick of watching it, but she had a little more salt to rub in the wound in the form of the other end of the rope. She really was serious about that shit. If he'd been a few pounds lighter it would've blown him away. With a clench of his jaw and a roll of his eyes, Monty begrudgingly took the end of the rope. "You don't let anything go, eh mademoiselle?"

He gave her a quick nod at the request to scan Chauffe, equally as skeptical that she'd find anything interesting as the Houndour was of the Cheri berry at first. At first. Most of the information that Esther's gadget spouted was new to Monty, and he leaned in closer for a better look at her screen.

"Flareon parent..." He muttered absentmindedly as his eyes scanned the text. "...what d'ya know." Now Chauffe's mourning the day they found those poachers and their carnage made sense. But did that mean...— his eyes fluttered between the Houndour on the ground and the Eevee on his shoulder. Oh. Oh.

The info on the egg moves was news to Monty, too. "Wait, so this thing's saying Chauffe is already supposed to know all of those moves?" Why was there so much that went into this trainer shit? Egg moves, moves gained through experience, move combos — it was enough to make his friggin' head explode. And Pokémon could teach each other moves, too?!

"Mademoiselle," Monty started, standing back up and moving to sling his backpack on to his shoulders. "If your Houndour can teach Chauffe even one of those moves I'll pull you all the way to Ambrette Town." He looked up at Oracle, who'd lost interest in the battle the moment her teammate hit the ground, and motioned for her to follow.

"But Ambrette is a long way off. Let's postpone the tutoring for a while and hit the road."

The battle ended in what felt like a flash, but that wasn't a bad thing. Battles came in different levels of length and intensity, holding them all to the same standard would be narrow sighted. "Well, wasn't that a fun battle, Vallace? Both sides performed quite well, even if it did look like Esther held the advantage during the majority of it." Beatrice commentated, giving a quick review of the battle. Vallace, while agreeing with what his trainer had to say, was more focused on his present task. Now that the battle was over, nothing stood in the way of his goal.

Grabbing Beatrice's hand once again, the Water type quickly led his trainer to where Monty and Esther were currently conversing. "Hey wait Vallace, slow down. Why are you in a rush?" The Paldean asked as she was forcefully moved. However, The Quaxwell remained stoic as he brought Beatrice to the other trainers on the scene.

The young woman first took a second to compose herself, letting out a breath before noticing where she now stood. “Oh umm, hello.” She gave a shy wave. “I was watching your battle just now, I hope you didn’t mind that. It was quite entertaining.” She commented.

“As I understand it, a Pokémon is born with an egg move if the parent already knew the move. This list just contains all the possible ones. Maybe Chauffe’s parent didn’t know all these moves, so he doesn’t know them either?”

When it came to the topic of moves, Esther considered herself a little knowledgeable. She had learned a small sum about how Pokémon could acquire moves during the process of teaching Pyhrra «Scale Shot» and she’d learned about ecological balancing from the Rangers and how they sometimes released trained Pokémon into the wild to propagate certain moves—like Çiera’s «Play Rough».

“Ambrette is a long way off, all the more reason to have Chauffe learn on the go! And we really should go if we want to make good time before we’re benighted.”

At some point Bea had arrived to spectate the battle; this wasn’t secret training or anything, so Esther couldn’t care less who watched.

“You’re a free woman, do what you want! Anyway, it looks like it our time to head off. Good Luck to you and Celia, safe journeys wherever you may go! Bye Bye!”

With that Esther set off. Ambrette town really was a long way off.

Hearing Esther's farewells, Beatrice felt a weird sinking feeling inside her that she couldn't quite understand. "Huh, why do I feel so sad all of a sudden?" She thought to herself. "Oh uh, yeah. I was just coming over to say goodbye. It was nice meeting you-'' The young woman was suddenly cut off when her Quaxwell violently tugged on her coat. The water typed stared at his trainer for a second. "Hey, what's going on with you, Vallace? You have been acting strangely since earlier." At his trainer's response, the Practicing pokemon pointed at Beatrice before motioning towards the group of people preparing to leave. "Umm, I'm not sure what you're trying-" The Paldean was once again interrupted as her pokemon pushed her forward. The Quaxwell let out a loud and determined cry, seemingly urging his trainer to speak up.

Finally, Beatrice began to understand what is it that her pokemon wanted to tell her. "Uh, please hold on Vallace. I don't think I can just-" A buzzing sound cut through Beatrice's thought as she watched Wattz begin circling in the air above Esther's group, giggling all the while. "You too Wattz? You guys..." The Paldean mumbled. Turning her head around, Beatrice met the serious gaze of her Quaxwell literally and figuratively giving her a push forward. Then, she looked towards her Rotom, as carefree as always, it's circular flight drawing the young woman's gaze down to the shrinking figure of Esther. Beatrice gulped down her doubts.

"Um, Esther, wait!" Beatrice would suddenly yell out. Her voice was loud and strong, the loudest she had ever sounded. Her hands gripped the bottom of her jacket, her legs were firmly planted on the ground and her eyes looked determined. "If you guys are leaving, can I maybe come with you?!"

Rivière Walk (Route 7) > Ambrette Town

“Huh, well I don’t mind but…” Esther floated her gaze over towards Monty and then Azumi. They were a group after all, and their opinion was just as valid as hers. She didn’t imagine they’d refuse but who was to say?

After Bea had been dealt with the group set-off. In only a few ‘short’ hours they made their way to Connecting Cave, unfortunately the risk of cave-ins was still high and the route to Cyllage City was blocked. Left without any other options, they detoured toward Ambrette Town. The night came and went as the trio—turned quartet—camped under the stars and then set off again with the rising soon.

The quaint sea-side town of Ambrette came into view by noon the following day. As per usual, Esther had already pulled out the relevant travel guides and recommendations on her Pokétch and was idly rattling off her findings too the group.

“I hear there’s a cave nearby where Trainers can spelunk for fossils, there’s even an archeological lab within the town that will revive any found fossils. Sounds interesting?”
