Nakano walked into the challenger waiting room, pulling the worried mouse from her head. She pet the top of the Pichu's head and nuzzled her face against her cheek, chuckling as the Pichu giggled with her squeaks and little electrical zaps tickled Naka's cheek. With a sweet smile, Naka massaged each ear, her thumb and forefinger gently massaging the ears from base to tip. "You'll be okay, Chu. Trust me. And if you do want to evolve, that's more than fine with me. But you can't stay as a Pichu forever. You'll hurt yourself, okay?" She said, trying to nudge her Baby Pokemon into making a decision for the mouse's health.

The Pichu gave a terse sigh before nodding. She would just have to see.

As Nakano entered the battlefield, she let her Pichu ride on her shoulder on her way in. Upon meeting her opponent, she raised an eyebrow at Ryder. She gave a short chuckle. "You're too young for me anyway, but thanks for the compliment." She gave a wink and extended her arm. Her Pichu took in a deep breath and ran across to her hand, where she jumped off and landed in the battlefield. Considering where Pichu was placed, she was taking advantage of how close she was to her trainer, making the Pikachu have to run even further to get to her.

As Ryder commanded to use a status move, Naka nodded towards Chu when she looked back at her trainer, subtly reminding her that there weren't many special attacks Pikachu can learn that would affect Chu. "Don't worry about that. Fake Out."

Chu clapped her hands, the flinching shockwave speeding over the battlefield to interrupt the Pikachu's Nasty Plot before the buffs could take hold.

Upon getting seated close to the battlefield, he looked around and noticed Andy. He smiled and waved at him, saving a seat for him and his Flaaffy. The first fight was Nakano versus some guy named Ryder, while the second fight would be Reina versus a guy named Washichi.

Emeric the Shiny Gengar peeked over Reggie's shoulder, his cool three-fingered claws resting on Reggie's shoulder as they watched.

Meanwhile, Washichi - a young man who looked like he just came straight from a dojo with how drenched in sweat he was in his white dojo uniform - gave a war cry once Reina entered the battlefield as he sent out his first Pokemon with a forceful palm. The Pokeball bounced and out came an Electabuzz. While the Electric Pokemon was medically cleared for this fight, he still had seemingly bloodshot eyes, his beady eyes staring through Reina as he stood there, his arms tensing and his horns arced electricity between them. He panted, seemingly a little too eager to fight.

Upon seeing Reina though, Washichi calmed down his fighting stance with slowly pushing down with both hands from chest to stomach. Once done, he smirked. "Hah, don't you look like you've been hittin' the gym. I don't mind a bit of wrestlin' once we're done here." It was obvious in his tone he didn't mean the innocent kind of wrestling, but given his attire, one who was socially deaf or ignorant wouldn't understand the euphemism.

Unfortunately, Reggie heard it and he glared at Washichi. "Eugh, gross... He looks like he can fill a kiddy pool with his sweat right now." His Gengar gave a disgusted look with his tongue lolling out, then chortled.

Reina could only shrug as she took to her battle. The Metztlian trainer took her spot across her opponent and smirked at his wrestling comment. "I do not back down from any battle! I will wrestle you after our match!" She looked confident and excited as she saw the crazy looking Electabuzz. "Perfect opponent for your Johto debut my old friend. Come on out, Gorochu!"

The red Poke Ball with a golden line around the middle flew into the sky and then opened up. The crimson looking Raichu landed with a smirk. His cheeks sent out sparks while his tail hit the ground with small flames fooming with each smack.
1732738022509.png

Reina smiled the shocked expressions from the audience. She knew this species was very rare outside of Metztli. It was even sorta of newly discovered over there. Now she had the opportunity to battle with a piece of her culture representing her team. The excitement sent chills through her veins. "Let's do this, Flame Charge, follow up by a Quick Attack!"

Despite the chubby physic the fire Riachu sported, it moved fast. It got on its four legs and shot forward with flames covering its body as it got faster and faster as it crossed the field. Whether it hit Electabuzz or not, Gorochu would break into a sprint around the field using Quick Attack and preparing to attack once more.

"Ugh! Such a genius move! The evil in our heart cannot be contained! Only uniting my body with such a goddess like you, Nakano, can I be calmed down. Again! Nasty P-P-PLOT!"

Pikachu shook his head as the Fake Out hit. He jumped forward again though and started rubbing his paws together. Dark energy began to cover the electric mouse.

"Ah! Yes! Thinking about our forbidden love and the evil energy flowing out of our hearts into Nakanos purity just gets me going! PI KA CHU! THUN DER BOOOOAAAHHLTTTHA!"

Pikachu shook his heads as his cheeks glowed with energy. A powerful jolt of electricity shot from his body towards Pichu.

Ziggy the Electabuzz

Reggie groaned as Reina agreed to the "wrestling" match. He rubbed his face with his hands, sighing. "Oh, you sweet summer chiquita..." With a groan, he just sat up straighter and watched, only to be amazed at what Pokemon Reina chose.

A red Raichu that had Charizard-like horns on its forehead, the ears looking like horns with yellow membrane, fury spikes running down its back, zig-zag dark brown stripes that reach around to the cream underbelly, and yellow circles with a tail on its cheeks and forehead. It even actually had claws, and its tail looked like a rounded red-hot piece of metal, not a thunderbolt. Its feet and hands were more mousy than a Kantonian Raichu's.

Gorochu... Interesting, he would have to go to Metztli to see what else was there.

Meanwhile, Washichi's eyes widened upon seeing the new Pokemon. The confident agreement to his invitation temporarily forgotten. "Heh, interesting. Alright, let's do this. Ziggy, Screech!"

While Electabuzz didn't need to worry about trying to target the Gorochu if he did a sweeping motion with his screeching, but he did use Gorochu's attack against it. Or tried to.

As the Electabuzz held up his arms to brace for the Flame Charge, he Screeched, a wave of Defense-lowering sound heading towards the Metztlian mouse.

"Alright, Quick Attack!" The Electabuzz made it seem like he was dancing in a strange primal predator-prey sort of dance as he matched Gorochu's speed (or tried to), chasing after it, zipping away from it, making for an annoying - and somewhat boring for those who don't get tense easy - game of tag.

The one thought that ran through her mind had made her actually smile.

'Idiot... Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot...'

Naka actually laughed, finding sadistic joy in just how idiotic this man was. "Ohhh, how cute. Chu, Nasty Plot." Chu giggled, her body glowing with darkness as her Special Attack was raised.

Just as Chu was ready for the next move, the next attack came and it made Naka grin. "Chu, Quick Attack!" As the Pichu shot forward with speed to get closer to the Pikachu, the Thunderbolt hit her, but the strength of the lightning did not have a powerful impact. Instead, it was being sucked into the Pichu's cheeks, the cheek pouches engorging themselves upon the electricity. It raised her Special Attack a bit more, but Pichu acted as if it were a direct hit. She skidded to the ground as she threw herself back upon getting hit.

"Mud-Slap!" Pichu's tiny black tail glowed beige as she dug it into the ground, flipping herself around and flinging a surprisingly large blast of mud at the Pikachu. She didn't seem so hurt up close, her cheeks looking larger to make her look like a Skwovet.

🗺️ Mahogany Town - Morning

In the next morning, Rick was talking at the PC with Falkner to be on par with the latest occurrences. "Everything here is under control for now. The Zubats don't seem to attack the cities, so people have plenty of safe spots. But some pokémon are starting to realize that and are also moving towards towns to avoid the swarms. I already had to drive some Mankeys away." Falkner explained. Rick frowned. "This problem won't solve itself, will it?" He questioned. "Even if it does, the League is not taking any chances. We got rangers and the police working on the case. But I'm afraid it's gonna take a while before they start making any progresses."

Meanwhile, Rick looked over his shoulder to see a line of people waiting to make their own calls. "I need my pokémon back. Can someone send them through the transporter?" Rick asked. "Better yet, why don't you come over and pick them up yourself? People are allowed to fly back to the starting point wherever they are, even when they fail the exam. Speaking of which, I have something for you." Falkner told him. "In that case. I'll be right there!" Rick stood up and walked to the entrance. As soon as he opened the door and stepped outside, his eyes widened as he saw Mankeys wandering around the town. He released Pearl from her ball while he stood there for a few seconds, looking around speechless. "Well, he did warn me, so I shouldn't be surprised." As he looked around, he spotted a ranger next to a truck with a few Mankeys already captured and ran towards him. "Excuse me!" Rick called. "What the hell is going on here?"

"Agh... don't even ask! Ever since those Zubats started coming out every night, we've had Mankeys showing up in towns en masse. We've been capturing and returning them to the wild, but they always come back every day." The ranger explained. Rick took another look, as he spotted a trio of Mankeys playing jump rope... with Pearl being the rope. "And if you think this is bad, don't even try going to Ecruteak unless you really have to. Last I contacted my colleagues, the city was brimming with them!" The ranger added, before his stylus got snatched by a Mankey and he had to chase after it. Rick shook his head and walked back to Pearl. "Alright, alright! Party's over! Get off there! Shoo, shoo!" He started yelling at the Mankeys, clapping and waving his arms as to make them leave his pokémon alone. The Mankeys were unconvinced. One of them leaped at Rick's face and started rubbing his head, while one held on to his arm, and the other hugged a leg, causing Rick to trip on his back. "That's assault!" He yelled. Pearl eventually came to the rescue and slapped each Mankey with her tail, wrapping it around Rick and putting her trainer on her back. Rick dusted his clothes off and rubbed his now messy hair. "Petulant creatures, damn it!"

🗺️ Violet City - Morning

As Rick and Pearl approached Violet City, Iris and Zephir ran outside to greet them, with Iris rearing and letting out a loud whinny. Rick waved at his pokémon, and soon after, Falkner came up from behind on the back of his Pidgeot. "Hey Rick!" He called. Rick peeked over his shoulder, patting Pearl on the neck and signaling her to descend. Rick jumped down, followed by the Gym Leader. "Sorry about what happened last night. You'll get another shot at your exam once we have this situation sorted. Until then, since it was out of your control, you get the money back." The Gym Leader took an envelope with cash and handed it over to Rick. Rick took the envelope and stared at it briefly. "And how long is that gonna take?" He asked, waving the envelope as he spoke. Falkner sighed. "That is the question, isn't it? Most of the field work must be put on hold during night time. Could take a couple days, or it could take weeks." He explained.

Rick's raised an eyebrow and tilted his head. "Really?" He put the envelope in his beltpocket and crossed his arms. "Zubats are nocturnal. Someone has to get out there and do the field work in their most active hours." Falkner huffed in frustration, crossing his arms. "Good luck finding people who are either brave or stupid to go out at night and risk their blood." Rick smirked. "Well... this brave and stupid person right in front of you is volunteering!" Rick said, winking. "Besides, I need this case solved so I can retake the exam. So why don't I do everyone a favor?" He added. Falkner sighed, covering his face with his palm. "Why did I talk..." He muttered, as Rick turned around.

Rick walked into the the Pokemart. He got an Escape Rope that he passed over his shoulder, and a Max Repel which, along with the notepad and the Johto Map, pretty much filled his beltpocket. He exited the store, pat Iris's neck and pushed himself up onto her back. Zephir hopped onto the mare's rump, while Pearl hovered in circles around them. Falkner walked up to them, with hands in his pockets. "I guess there's no point trying to dissuade you. Just make sure you don't do something too stupid. Your findings won't serve us anything if you can't pass them over." He said. "Can I keep the radio for the time being? It will make things so much easier." Rick asked. Falkner gave Rick a side look. "Don't you dare lose it!" Then walked away towards his gym.

🗺️ Route 36 - Morning

Rick and his pokémon rushed through Route 36. Meanwhile, Chris reached out to him on the radio. "Rick, you there?" Rick pushed the headset closer to his ear. "Ah, finally! Zubats have been going crazy lately. They've been attacking people and pokémon left and right!" He told him. "That's not out of ordinary. People who work on caves sometimes end up disturbing the pokémon living there and cause them to attack." Chris spoke. "But they don't come out in swarms of hundreds spanning across half a region, do they?" There was a brief silence before Chris replied. "Umm... no, not at that scale." Rick huffed. "Well, we're gonna check every single cave in the north. There has to be something in there. In the meantime, check out where they sell Dusk Balls. I wanna catch a specimen from each place while I'm at it!" He told Chris. "I'll do. And what about the Medieval Fest?"

Rick frowned. "Forget it!"

    “WWRRRRREEEEYYYYAAAAA!!!”

”What the FUCK is wrong with you!?

Fair question. But Esther wouldn’t dignify it with a response. After all, HOW RUDE! There was nothing wrong with her! Sure, there was a manic grin affixed to her face; and sure, that wasn’t the first time she’d screamed—randomly, unintelligibly, loudly. But that was still NO reason to treat her as anything less than a Lady.

A Lady just had to…let it out sometimes…you know? Hot, heavy, heady…
    Violence
    .

The earth trembled—erupted. A plume of dust soared into the sky; the aftermath rained down: stone fragments rained.

A shadow breached the dust-clouds and plummeted to the ground: all dirt and dust and mangled scales.

Pyrrha struggled to her feet. Stubborn. She was on her last claws, but she didn’t care. Win, lose, it didn’t matter. All that mattered was the crush of claws against her scales, the desperate heat of dragon-fire in her maw, the intoxicating thrill on the edge of defeat.

She was a mess but… her opponent wasn’t much better off.

The dust settled as Ursaring pulled a faded claw from a fresh crater. Its fur was a patchwork of breathy-burns and scaly-cut-scars, of whippy-welts and headbutt bruises. Those were the fruits of Pyrrha’s labor, and she saw that it was good. She admired her handiwork; a few more or those and—
    ”Easy girl… “

Violence. That’s what this was: simple. savage, animalistic.

Left to her own devices Pyrrha fought with a reckless glee. Esther had indulged it. How could she not? After being kept away from the battlefield, Pyrrha had positively vibrating when they’d found their first opponent. She was delirious with joy. Joy that bled through their bond. Joy so potent that Esther just had to…let it all out, you know?

But where Pyrrha was satisfied to hit and be hit, Esther had other thoughts. This wasn’t just a foe for Pyrrha to bash her head against; no, this was a foe with lunch money still sitting in his wallet.

She was ten thousand dollars down after her latest purchases, and she had no other choice but to find her way to the Olivine Battle Club and ruffle some feathers. A few wager matches later and…here they were. A few wins, a few losses but Esther was enroute to a net profit.

Was it morally acceptable to take advantage of eager trainers all-too willing to wager their meagre savings on the outcome of a battle? Lol, yes. Was she not such a trainer herself?

Two hours in the battle trenches had yielded a tidy five-hundred dollars. A lot of things became morally acceptable for $250/hr.

    “Work Up into Scale Shot!”
A cross guard is all Ursaring can manage as a fresh round of wounds are torn open by the lacerating scales.

The last breath attack had left Ursaring with a wisp of dragon-fright or…whatever it was caused dragon breath’s paralysis. And while Ursaring had the «Guts» to push on, stronger than ever, now that Esther was holding the reins, there would be no more close calls.

Pyrrha had her fun, now it was time to win.

    “Bathe it—Dragon Breath!”
A final gout of dragon-fire sealed the battle. The earth shuddered one final time as Ursaring toppled.

A moment later, its trainer returned it. Dark mutters beneath their breath as they trudged away.

    “Don’t forget my money!”

The trainer—Esther hadn’t got his name—didn’t pause but the sweet chime of her pokétch let the Oblivian know he’d upheld his end of the bargain. The grin on Esther’s face, impossibly, widened.

    Lunch money acquired… Hehehe

Was this the satisfaction of a middle school bully?

”That’s a feisty dragon you’ve got! Got another round in her?”

Steel-scales rung as Pyrrha—stubborn, fearless Pyrrha—answered the challenge. The new trainer’s grind widened.

”Haha! I’ll hold the field while you…freshen up.”

    “Don’t.”
    Esther sighed, exasperated.
    “She doesn’t know her limits.”

The Battle Club had it’s own in-house Nurse that spared trainer’s a trip to the pokécenter but Esther knew better than to jump into another battle after little more than a quick patch-up. Even if Pyrrha was ostensibly restored to full health, that wouldn’t do anything for their combined fatigue.

Simply put, Esther knew how to quit while she was ahead.

Even if she wanted to squeeze in another battle, time wouldn’t allow it. Shayan had called, he was less than five minutes out. If she wanted to grab lunch before the long trip to Oblivia, then it was now or never.

"Nooooo!" Ryder dropped to his knees as Pikachu was smacked by the Mud Slap. The yellow mouse laid there, covered in mud with a sad face. It didn't seemed knocked out, but for some reason it didn't look like it wanted to get up. "Our edgy perfect yellow fur, dirty... this cannot be! Pikachu, return. Our victory is pointless if we can't look cool doing it." Ryder returned his Pokemon and walked away, disappearing into the crowd with his fist held high in victory.

"Match that, get up close and personal, hit em with Fire Punch!" Reina boxed against the air as her partner dashed across the field and colliding against the incoming Electabuzz.

Gorochu didn't stop there, his paws ignited with flames as he took the proximity of his opponent to swing an uppercut and then a side swing towards it, matching Reina's boxing instructions. "Just like the prof back home, move like a Butterfree, sting like a Beedrill!"

Gorochu jumped back and broke into another sprint with quick attack, using its superior speed to keep track of Electabuzz. Once it saw an opening it dashed ahead, preparing another assult of Fire Punches.

He forfeit?!?!

Naka was in shock. All that because he and his Pokemon couldn't get dirty??? "Hey, you can't handle a bit of mud?" She yelled after him, looking a bit deflated she won this way.

Her Pichu, on the other hand, felt like her victory was cheap and it didn't teach her anything. She didn't evolve, and it bummed her out. But the thrill of battle was nice, it felt good to do that again. Pichu bounded right back to Naka's shoulder, earning herself a fist bump. "I guess he and his Pikachu are a lot girlier than I thought." She snickered, earning a giggle from her little mouse.

Seemed like Screech missed its target, which was rather unfortunate. The Electabuzz seemed to be familiar with this type of well-refined boxing though, as he tried to use his forearms to block the incoming fiery punches from hitting his face and body. However, it still hurt a little as his forearms got singed.

"Hold!" Washichi commanded, with the Electabuzz holding his position as Gorochu jumped back, sprinted, and came back. "Cross Chop!" Twirling to meet Gorochu head-on, his arms blazed with fighting chi before suddenly sending out a crossed chop towards Gorochu, hoping to stop the incoming Fire Punches and do some damage.

Meanwhile, Reggie watched with some anticipation, leaning forward with forearms on his knees as he watched how the Gorochu moved so expertly and boxed so well.

"You want power? Give him power, rocket punch!"

Gorochu's body ignited with flames as Flame Charge turned on once again. The increased speed, quick attack and flame charge blasted Gorochu straight through the Cross Chop as he held his right paw forward. The flames around the fire electric mouse cloaked his paw as he went straight as an arrow with Fire Punch towards his opponent.

Gorochu - +2 Speed

The speed was overwhelming. Instead of looking like a rocket, the mouse looked like a meteor. The Cross Chop did nothing, the overwhelming elemental energy from the attacks slamming through his attack, disrupting it and sending the Electabuzz back. The flames burned, and that punch made the Electabuzz reel as he was sent skidding across the ground. He grunted, struggling to get up.

"ZIGGY!" Washichi yelled out, watching as his Electabuzz attempted to stand. The electrical monkey-like creature's arms shook, legs quaked as he breathed deeply and managed to stand. He was wobbly on his feet, the Electabuzz shaking his head and slamming his fists together, panting heavily. "Alright, let's try our combo. Quick Break!"

Electabuzz felt a surge of adrenaline - a last ditch attempt - to secure a win. He shot forward, his arm shining with fighting energy as he used Brick Break to slam into Gorochu, his legs carrying him like a blur.

Reggie already knew that Reina was going to win. That Electabuzz was on his last legs, and a simple little move would be enough to knock him out. He stood up, his Gengar chortling in his shadow. "He's so close to knocking out! Get him!" Even his Gengar appeared right above the railing to pump his fist into the air.

"We admire your determination and have enjoyed our battle, but it is time we finish this, Fire Punch!" Reina threw one last right jab at the air while Gorochu blasted ahead once more.

The firey mouse smirked as the two moves collided. The impact caused a combustion that send the Gorochu backwards, but he easily flipped over in the air and landed on his four feet. As the referee called out Reina's victory, the Metztlian trainer proudly placed her hands on her hips while Gorochu ran quickly back to her. "I'll wait for you after the tournament for that wrestling match!" She called out, picked up Gorochu and walked away from the field with him.

The Electabuzz was blasted back, knocked out from the clash. Washichi just grinned, returning his Pokemon. "Good job. Can't wait~." His grin got wider and all Reggie can think about was how creepy that was.

"Damn it, Reina..." He grumbled, running out of the bleachers now that there was an interlude, leaving Andy behind. He ran back down to the lobby where the spectators and challengers from both sides would mingle during the interlude. He found Washichi first, having just returned from healing his Electabuzz. Reggie crossed his arms, staring up at the black belt. "Ayo, my girlfriend didn't know you meant a more sensual wrestling match, not a real one."

Washichi sneered. "Oh? Well then, maybe she shouldn't have agreed to it. What, you feeling jealous? Afraid I'll steal your girl? If you're scared of it happening, maybe you do deserve to not have her."

"I just don't want you to trick her into something she didn't actually agree to." He glared at him, his Gengar appearing transparently behind Reggie. Honestly, those words did bother him, but he knew Reina wouldn't go so far as to do something so crazy with another when she was dating him. Still, he did seem quite jealous of the idea.

Brontis the Chikorita
Chu the Pichu

July 28th

After having that little doubles fight with that dork and talking to her brother after it’s been ages, it was time to face her demons…

Naka took a deep breath as she handled the Pokémon into her PC. Once she only had her Aerodactyl, Sceptile, Mienshao, Hatterene, Chikorita, and Pichu, she went into a single bunk room where she sat on the edge of the bed. She had returned Brontis for the time being, just having her Chu out and about.

The air around Naka became serious and Chu seemed a little concerned, her triangular ears folded back. Naka sighed, scratching the back of her head. “So… Something came up and I realized something rather important. Chu… Did you ever feel like I’d like you less if you evolved?”

Pichu’s eyes widened. Of course, she shook her head, but Naka knew better. There was a fear hidden within those large black eyes. Naka gave a soft chuckle, trying to cut the serious air to help her mouse feel more comfortable. “I figured you’d answer with that. Look…”

She let out a huff. “I spoke with Mason, I know you heard me.”

Chu nodded.

“And… Something came up that made me realize why you stayed as a Pichu. What he said…”

Chu’s eyes widened more. There was now trepidation.

“You were there when it happened… Back in Mt. Pyre…” She said, her hands clasped together, thumbs fidgeting with each other. “Chu… It’s okay if you evolve. I know you won’t turn out like my brother and, if you did… I won’t abandon you. Or think less of you for it. I wasn’t a good sister for my brother, and Mason’s dynamic with me was different from our dynamic that we share.” She tried to explain in simple terms, but it was a bit difficult with this part.

Thankfully, Chu had some understanding given her advanced age. Chu just looked down, her ears drooped over.

Naka saw her little mouse contemplating, but more so, looking upset. She reached out and patted Chu on the head. “It’s okay. I don’t want you to think you’re useless or holding me back. We’re not doing anything that important, and I’m not focusing on grabbing badges. You’ve been amazing as a Pichu, and yet I think it’s time we moved on from that day.” She gave a weak smile. “I haven’t… really moved on either.”

Chu looked up, her mitted hands coming up to hold Naka’s hand, squeaking inquiringly. Naka smiled, chuckled even if it was tense. Her thumb gently rubbed Chu’s cheek, the hairs on her hand rising from the static electricity.

“Yeah… I… I feel bad… I thought I was being a good sister, but no sister should coddle their sibling and prevent them from seeing the world and growing up. I prevented my brother from doing that… And it was my actions that led him down this path he’s on. Mom and dad warned me about this… I don’t want you to resent me either if something bad happens. What happened at Mt. Pyre still haunts my dreams because… I didn’t even try to save Mason…” Her eyes became downcast, and she can feel the confusion etched on Chu’s face.

“He nearly died because I didn’t even use Mudster… I was scared, but I gave too many empty promises. Promising I’d protect him, promising that he wouldn’t need to worry about anything if I was there.” Her lip curled, mocking herself. “‘Just let your big sis handle it… You don’t need to worry about it…’” Her voice cracked.

She realized she was about to cry, and she shook her head, sniffling. “Sorry… this was meant to be more… encouraging.” She huffed, pulling away her hand, her mouse silent, transfixed upon her trainer as she saw that memory in a new light. Chu felt strangely angry. Relieved, yet angry.

Why? Why would her dear Naka do something like that? Was that why Naka was so depressed afterwards? Chu loved Naka, but Naka could be stupid sometimes.

“I focused too much on keeping myself alive when my life wasn’t as much in danger as his. I acted as if I would swoop in and protect him from anything whenever we talked about it, that I would sacrifice myself when given the chance for him, when I almost left him to die because I realized my mistake in making him so dependent on me and, selfishly, I wanted to run… To act like I didn’t just make my own brother so weak…” She took a deep breath in and out of her nose, shaking her head.

“While I would always blame that ragtag Team Rocket group as they had no reason to be there, I can’t exactly only blame them for being at the wrong place, wrong time. I guess fate told me that it was enough coddling… Which is why I haven’t coddled you as much after that.” Her mouth felt dry, and she could feel her mouse staring through her. “I… I didn’t want to believe that my coddling had ultimately caused this result to happen, but I guess I knew all along, I was just in denial.”

She looked back at her Pichu, whose eyes were now watery. “Chu… Let’s start over a little. I realize now that the reason why you stay like this is out of fear of change, fear of what I would think of and treat you. Let’s try to be better versions of ourselves and, if you decide you want to evolve, I’ll support you. I’d honestly like you to evolve but that’s your decision to make.” She smiled. “It doesn’t make you any less my partner if you do.”

Chu sat there on the bed, looking up at her trainer. She sniffled, tears fell. Then she squeezed her eyes shut, fat drops of tears rolling down as she lept at Naka, clutching her tank top as she cried and nuzzled her stomach. Chu’s little mitted fists not only clung to Naka’s tank top, but also hit her like a petulant child despite her very valid reason, as if both relieved and angry at her. Naka smiled pitifully, wrapping an arm around Chu and petting her head, calming her down a bit.

“There there… I know it’s painful to think, and I know this’ll be hard to move on from… But we can’t heal if we don’t handle these old wounds.” She said, eyes closing as she continued to soothe her mouse.

With that done and out of the way, Naka looked up at the ceiling of the single room, her mind surprisingly clear. “We aren’t doing this alone either. We have each other.” A more reasonable promise, hearing her Pichu squeak in agreement.

Her Pichu finally stopped crying, looking up at Naka and seeming a bit better now. Naka smiled, setting her Pichu back on her shoulder. “Let’s be better. Me mostly, since it was my actions that led us here. Promise to keep me at my word?” She held up her fist, with Chu giving a choked squeak and pawing at her knuckles, earning a little chuckle.

“Now that I have talked about this and we can let that heal as we go on… How about we do that doubles gauntlet through the lighthouse tomorrow?” Naka smiled, chuckling as her mouse squeaked in excitement, excited to watch her teammates duke it out.

"Hey!" Reina called out as she approached the two men. "Reggie and Guachachi!" She smiled while Gorochu walked confidently behind her. "We went to get some water after getting healed. What did you think of my surprise partner?"

The young trainer took a second to notice the air could be cut by a dropping elevator with a knife in a sludge sea or something like that. She knew things were a bit tense. "What's going on?"

Then it hit her. They were fighting for her heart?! Oh nononono! Her mother had warned her about such situations! Did she really bring two men against each other because of her? Was her invitation to wrestle another guy in front of her novio a reason for them to fight? How could she be so dumb! She need to establish limits and quick!

Reina leaned over on Reggie and kissed him on the cheek. "By the way I remembered we have things to do after the tournament, so I can't wrestle you, Guasushi. But I did have fun in our match, I hope we meet in the silver conference!"

Reggie's eyes lit up when he heard Reina come over. Still though, he was staring down Washichi and his shit-eating grin, not letting up.

Reggie's shoulders eased up when Reina leaned over him and kissed his cheek, expression softening as he smiled at her, his arm around her waist. Getting his name wrong twice was extremely amusing, making him smirk.

Washichi was very confused, only to look actually upset. "Huh... So you really didn't understand it wasn't just wrestling... Huh, your girl's naive as shit." He then walked off, clearly in a bad mood.

Reggie sighed, smiling at her. "Sorry about that. I could tell his invitation to wrestle was not from any innocent want to test your strength or technique, so I was... defending your innocence." He looked away, feeling a bit awkward and strangely guilty.

He smiled as he looked at Gorochu, appreciating the new Pokemon. "So, Gorochu, huh? A cute powerhouse ya got there." He looked back at Reina, trying to move on from their awkward event earlier.

"I know, he is adorable and powerful. Like me." Reina smirked along with the Gorochu standing next to her. "Now, we have to prepare to fight Naka. I can't lose against her again. Then, I am coming after you." She kissed Reggie on the cheek and started to walk away. "Let's go, Gorochu!"

Reina broke into a jog as they made their way back to the area preparing for their next battle. She took a water bottle from a nearby stand and tossed one to her current battling partner. "Drink up. We need to be well hydrated before our match." After she took a short drink, she walked over to a small bench and sat down, closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Focus, focus, focus, focus..." She said slowly before drifting into a meditation state.

Gorochu looked confused for a bit, then shrugged and sat next to her, holding his water bottle and swaying his tail to the sides.

3rd Quarterfinal Match: Mai & Chipper the Emolga VS Ai & Cosmos the Ampharos

After the excitement that was Reina’s Gorochu versus Washichi’s Electabuzz, a few minutes of intermission passed before the third battle started.

A young girl - looking no older than fifteen - skipped to her end of the field, her chin-length black hair was up in pigtails, tied up with yellow and white pom pom hair ties. She giggled as she stared ahead with determined chocolate eyes and an impish grin, a stark contrast to the white blouse and black skirt with yellow polka dots she wore. She even had a black overcoat with yellow lining, a black sash that was tied neatly into a bow in the back, white tights, and black fluffy boots with yellow pom-poms sitting atop. Those who were Electric-Type enthusiasts wouldn’t doubt what Pokémon she dressed herself up as.

Holding her Pokéball at the ready, she waited for her challenger.

Her challenger, an older woman with a youthful appearance despite the stormy grey eyes and more pronounced creases across her face, walked up. She wore a white wool coat that ended at her knees, her silver hair tied up with a hair tie with a red glinting sphere. She held her Pokéball in both hands, a small smile on her face. “Don’t disappoint your elder now, Mai. Show me what you got.”

The girl - stunned that she was to be fighting one of the elders of the village - wiped the shocked expression from her face and gave a spirited grin. “I won’t disappoint you, Granny Ai-Ai. Go, Chipper!” Mai tossed her Pokéball up, the ball opening and revealing an Emolga, who caught the wind drifting through and floated above the ground, squeaking happily with her tail wagging.

Ai’s smile stayed as she tossed her ball up, an aged Ampharos revealed in the light. “Let’s show this young’un the power of experience, Cosmos.” The Ampharos bleated, his tail wagging.

The match started, and Mai was the first to call an attack.

“Chipper, Eerie Impulse!” Chipper let loose an electromagnetic wave from her body, the waves heading straight for the Ampharos.

Ai’s smile never wavered. “Cotton Guard, dear.” Cosmos bleated and summoned a cloud of cotton to cover his body, increasing his physical defense as the cotton clung to his body. However, the radio waves still affected him, and he could feel his electrical power waning within his own body as these waves interfered with his power.

“Toxic!” Mai’s Chipper’s cheeks were suddenly engorged, holding back some awful bile before projectile vomiting at the Ampharos.

“Confuse Ray.” The toxins hit Cosmos but - while he did look a little green and sick - the ball at the end of his tail and the red spheroid in his forehead began to shine with an eerie light. Chipper couldn’t look away fast enough and she started to sway in the air, unable to hold herself steady.

Mai looked a little concerned. “Oh no… Chipper, Double Team!” Chipper got her bearings enough to start creating doubles of herself.

Ai chuckled. “Oh, sweet summer child. You think I wasn’t prepared for that? Cosmos, Power Gem.”

The sickly Ampharos’s red gems glowed a bright light before manifesting glittering multicolored rocks. They shot forward in a scatter, hitting and destroying the Emolga copies. One of the gems hit the Emolga, and Ai took initiative. “Fire Punch.”

Mai looked up in concern as her Emolga was hit, but she shook her head. “No! I won’t give up! Chipper, Encore!”

Chipper fought her dizziness and created a sphere of pearlescent light and shot it towards the charging Ampharos. Chipper used this to break free from her confusion and soared across the arena, dodging the Ampharos’s Fire Punch.

Ai just simply chuckled. “Keep at it, Cosmos, it’s not time yet to restart.”

Confused by Ai’s words, Mai just ignored her and continued. “Chipper, Quick Attack.” Chipper did her best to slam against the Ampharos, but Cosmos took initiative. Letting the Emolga slam into his cotton, he brought down his flaming fist. The Emolga cried out and fell into the ground, a plume of dust rising from the impact. Mai watched on with concern, hands clasped together in front of her face in some silent prayer.

As the dust settled, the Emolga was struggling to stand, not giving up. Mai squealed happily. “Alright! Chipper, Protect!”

The Emolga summoned a green barrier as Cosmos went in for his third Fire Punch. Right as the shield disappeared, another Fire Punch was thrown, and Cosmos was free from Encore’s effects. The Fire Punch didn’t connect, as the Emolga caught the wind and flew up.

“Tch, let’s restart, Cosmos. Rest.” She said, the still sickly Cosmos suddenly collapsing onto the floor. He would’ve fainted if it weren’t for the command. A green glow sparkled around his body, healing and curing him.

Mai’s jaw dropped. “Nooooo-ughhhh!” She groaned, shaking her head. “Roost, Chipper. Then wail on her with Quick Attack!”

Chipper nodded, gliding to the ground and healing herself a bit. She then shot forward and slammed against the cotton-covered Ampharos once with Quick Attack, then he did it a second time as the Ampharos yawned and got up, the cotton cushioning each blow. It really made it feel like a Joltik was charging against a behemoth as it stood and wasn’t phased or even budging from the attack.

“Charge up, Cosmos.” Ai commanded. “Let’s finish this.”

With a nod, Cosmos’s eyes closed as he began charging up power, his two red spheres glowing until they were a bright white, restoring some of the power he held before the Eerie Impulse.

Mai was starting to get nervous. “Uhhh, Protect!” Chipper created a barrier of green, but that’s when Cosmos was done.

“Now, Cosmos. Meteor Beam.”

Opening his eyes, Cosmos opened his maw as the depths of his mouth, eyes, and red spheres suddenly glowed orange. He then blasted out a large beam of energy, dipping his head to hit the Protect barrier and the ground floor, kicking up dust and sand, obscuring each other from view.

Emolga flew around, trying to find the Ampharos through all the thick dust.

“Chipper, use Double Team!” Mai called out.

As the Emolga was in the process of creating copies of herself, she was suddenly hit by a flurry of glittering gems from the depths of the dust, her copies fading. The Ampharos followed suit as he charged and leaped, a grin on his face, staring down his opponent as he was suddenly over her. His fist ignited with fire and he punched the off-guard Emolga into the ground floor.

As the dust settled, the Ampharos stood between Mai and her Emolga, his expression giving a smug smirk before he waddled back to his trainer’s side of the field.

Mai whined, then groaned as she stamped her foot on the ground. “Ughh, you go so hard, Granny and Cosmos! Not fair!” She huffed, returning her Emolga before running off the battlefield, right as the announcer announced Ai’s win over the quarterfinals match.

Ai chuckled, returning Cosmos and leaving the field for the last quarterfinals match.

4th Quarterfinal Match: Ren & Plus the Plusle VS Yuto & Bakuhatsu the Voltorb

The last quarterfinals match was here after a quick intermission. After the field was taken care of from the destruction the Ampharos had wrought it earlier, a scrappy young boy wearing a white and red t-shirt, a red cap, blue shorts, and black sneakers came running out. A bundle of energy, unable to stand still, the young boy twisted back his red cap. Bruises and bandaids were on his knees and shins, and he sported a hungry and excited grin. “Alriiight! Let’s get this show on the road!” He yelled excitedly, throwing caution to the wind it seemed. As well as shame.

His opponent came out of his side, standing up to his side of the battlefield and holding a very glum look when before it was all smiles. “Ugh… Not you again…”

The boy just laughed. “Haha! I told you that you wouldn’t be able to escape battling me, nerd!”

His opponent pushed up his glasses and fixed his dark button-up t-shirt. He pulled a Pokéball out of his khaki pants and threw out his Pokémon, just as the youngster threw out his own Pokéball.

A Plusle appeared on the youngster’s side of the field, and the ‘nerd’ had released his Voltorb.

The boy just pointed and sneered at the ‘nerd’, chuckling. “You better give me a good fight, Yuto!”

The nerd, now known as Yuto, just sighed. “Yeah yeah, I got it, Ren…”

Once the match started, they both sent their commands in unison.

“Bakuhatsu, Agility!”

“Plus, Alluring Voice!”

The Voltorb had raised its speed by shifting about quickly in place, the sound move from the Plusle being completely ignored thanks to Voltorb’s Soundproof ability. Ren just realized he wasted his time and he gritted his teeth. “Damn.” Didn’t he remember Voltorb’s ability being Static before…?

“Boys your age shouldn’t be using such language.” Yuto huffed, his posture now straighter since he got the kid to falter. “Baku, Light Screen.”

Ren just shook his head. “Oh, be quiet, nerd. Plus, Encore!”

As light filtered through on Yuto’s side of the field to increase the special defense of his team, the Plusle flung a sparkly ball. It hit its face, earning a bewildered electronic cry from the ball. It gave some computing beeps and gear clinking.

Yuto’s blood ran cold.

Ren smirked. “Alright, free set up! Plus, Nasty Plot!” The Plusle set up freely, making giggles and squeaks as he thought of something devious, his inner power growing. He did it a second time, as well, Ren counting down both Encore and Light Screen turns as the Voltorb struggled through with using Light Screen over and over again.

Meanwhile, Yuto was standing there on his side of the field, contemplating on what to do. At the last turn for Encore’s use, he just gave a defeated chuckle. “Alright then. One more, Baku, and you’re free.”

Ren just smirked. “Plus, Wish.” The Plusle made a wish, a shooting star flying across the arena’s upper area before disappearing.

The last Light Screen was used and Yuto was finally able to command his Voltorb without being stuck. “Baku, Rollout.”

Ren was surprised at first. Normally, Yuto would do at least some sort of set up before, like using Screech. He just gave a grin. “Aww, giving up? Fine then. Plus, one more Nasty Plot. You can take the first hit of Rollout.”

The Plusle nodded, using Nasty Plot as the Voltorb charged forth, slamming into the Plusle. The mouse winced but landed on his feet, finishing off Nasty Plot as the Voltorb did a tight turn and charged again, power building up.

“Plus, Mud-Slap.” Ren commanded, the mouse slapping a chunk of mud as the Rollout came into contact with the mouse. The mouse was thrown back more this time, but the wish came back. It flew across the stadium overhead and sparkles rained down on Plusle, granting him energy once again.

At this time, the Light Screen’s filtering also disappeared.

“Grass Knot.” Grass surged from the ground, grabbing and squeezing the Voltorb, crushing it and stopping its charge.

The winner was announced as the Voltorb didn’t move. Ren and his Plusle.

With a huff and a returning of his defeated Pokémon, Yuto left the stadium in a brisk walk, as Ren jeered and ran back inside the stadium with his Plusle in tow.

Reggie chuckled as Reina commented on the fire… Raichu thing. He gave her a kiss on the cheek as she gave her farewell, giving her an impish grin. “Good luck.” He ran back to the stadium’s seats and sat back down beside Andy, watching the next two matches play out. Such spirited young kids nowadays, it was making him wish he were just a few years younger to recapture that youthful energy he used to have.

Meanwhile, Naka was watching the next matches, formulating her gameplan. All she needed to do was to get Pichu to realize she can evolve and that she’d be better off for it. But she didn’t really have much for that Gorochu. That Electric/Fire-Type was strong, so maybe they will cause Pichu to evolve through stress and realization.

Even with a fully evolved Pokémon four times weak to Ground, Mud-Slap - even powered with Nasty Plot - wasn’t going to cut it. She smiled, aware she was going to lose, but she wasn’t about to give Reina an easy break.

She got up, stretching and yawning. “Alright, let’s go, Chu.” She smiled, her Pichu having finished her snack and jumped up to her shoulder, squeaking happily as Naka made her way to the first semifinals match against Reina.

Walking out to the crowd once again, she took a deep breath. The pressure to win wasn’t on her shoulders anymore, she felt quite… free. Huh…

After all those battles she partook throughout Johto, she found that some of her anxiety with battle performance stemmed from winning as much as the crushing perceptions of others when it came to the treatment of her Pokemon. Looking ahead at the battle, she grinned a toothy grin, her Pichu squeaking and heading out onto the field to ready for a fight.

Reina walked in to her side of the field. She had a serious look on her face as she held a Poke Ball. "You better not hold back, Naka. I mean it. You hold back and you're hurting my pride." She tossed the item into the air and out came Gorochu. The orange red Pikachu evolution landing expertly on the ground, ears twitching and tail swining from side to side. "Let's go, Gorochu, quick attack!"

The battle began with the fire electric Pokemon bursting into a fast movement around the field. He went from left to right in merely miliseconds before moving around Pichu. He suddenly appeared in the air and dove down to tackle the electric mouse.

Chu clapped her hands, a shockwave that burst out faster than the Gorochu could land a hit with Quick Attack thanks to its higher priority. With that, she smirked. "Mud-Slap!" Chu dug her tail into the earth and threw a chunk of mud at Gorochu.

Gorochu stopped mid air as the Fake Out hit, bringing the fire mouse down. As the Mud-Slap was incoming, clones of Gorochu appeared, one of them being destroyed by the ground type attack. Reina looked surprised as the remaining three clones started running around Chu. "I didn't know you could do that!" Reina cried out excitedly. "Mix it up, add Quick Attack!"

Gorochu started moving even faster around the smaller mouse. The clones then started dashing towards the center, one by one. An endless cycle of Quick Attacks, one after another. Reina clenched her fists and raised them up. "That's it, let's get them!"

Naka watched as the Gorochu had used Double Team. Chu was looking a little overwhelmed. It had been years - maybe even close to a decade - where Pichu had ever been in a league-sanctioned fight at all. Her ears were down as she watched the Gorochu spin around her.

"Chu, Swift."

However, the Quick Attack hit Chu before she could react, sending her across the field due to how small she was at eight inches. However, she did right herself in the air, flinging homing stars from her tail as she did a somersault before landing on her hands and feet.
