Fandom Pokémon: Exeggutor Island Contest

Esther R. Sophys

August 11th, ~9:45 A.M.

hree-to-Five minutes, maybe?

That was the sense Esther got about the remaining battles as they unfolded. They lacked a certain frenetic energy which implied a swift resolution; these battles would end soon, but not that soon. That was…good, she had ample time for a pep party. They wouldn’t even miss her.

En route to the Contest Nurse, Esther spotted a familiar head of blue.
“Hey G, first round didn’t go your way? Guess we’re in the same boat, eh?”

The fates had a curious way of bringing friends together in the first round of the tournament and given how similar their circumstances were, Esther figured she might as well extend a courtesy.
“Doesn’t look like they’ll be wrap up too quickly, care to join me for a pep party?”
Obviously they wouldn’t be having any sort of party with the backdrop of the whole Contest behind them, but they were on a nature reserve and there was plenty of space they could claim for themselves. Esther simply gestured to the vast expanse of Exeggutor forests to indicate her intentions.

“If you’re interested, give me a holler. I’m wanna hit medical real quick.”

"Oh! Hey Esther!" G popped a smile and placed her hands behind her back while her Rotomphone remained floating in front of her. "Yeah, I didn't really get to do anything, sadly." She let out a sigh and nodded along with Esther's offer. "Sure, I'll wait outside at the snack stand. I need a good energy drink after this."

The coordinator in the making made her way across the healing area towards the food stand. There was a line, since they were in between rounds. She sighed and took her place, only to notice a couple of people ahead of her turn around. They tried to not stare too much, but it was obvious. G placed a smile on her face and waved at the people trying to avoid looking at her. "Hope you're all enjoying the show!"

That seemed to be enough to get the crowd to ease up and start talking amongst themselves. While waiting she took a few selfies with some fans and when she finally managed to buy her Blueberry Mountain Cold Blast, she waved kindly at the crowd and stepped aside to wait for Esther.

    “Thank You,”
Esther bobbed as she received Halay’s Pokéball from the nurse on duty. It was a cute guy, a bit taller than herself, but the pastel pink hair really wasn’t doing it for him. Hot pink, maybe? No… Bubblegum pink? Hmm… pink hair was hard to pull off. But he was definitely in the right industry for that.

    Oops,
    No time to get distracted!

It wasn’t hard to find G: look for the crowd-pocket that most looked like coomers and—[REDACTED]

”I saw a cove a few down the beach, I think that’d be a good spot. How’s about it?”
Close enough that they could run back to the contest if they needed to, far enough that the crowd wouldn’t disturb them. The perfect distance. Esther led the way, plodding along the sand and surf.

When Esther had allowed her Pokémon to remain in the audience to watch the matches, her intent had been to meet up with them afterward and discuss what they’d seen. Things like whether her battle strategies needed to be adjusted or their impressions of which trainers she needed to watch out. Eyes in the crowd would definitely give her an advantage going into future matches. However, an early loss had forced her to push those ideas aside.

As good as it was to win, she didn’t want her team to get consumed by the need to win. They were fresh, they were inexperienced; victories would come sooner or later, and persistence was more important than immediate success. Everyone lost sometimes, ya just had to bounce back stronger. Admittedly, easier said than done.

Once they arrived at the cove, Esther released all her Pokémon. She didn’t really have a speech ready for them, no fancy exultations and calls to action. Instead, she merely flipped through her Pokétch until she found a song.

    ”Let’s dance!”

Three light steps and Esther was hip-bumping G,
”Hope you’ve got a song ready afterward!!”

Esther didn’t expect her Pokémon to get it, not immediately anyway. There had been little thought attached to this ‘pity party’, it was more a vibe-based decision. Who didn’t like a little pick-me-up when they were feeling down?

As the music picked up Esther followed suite, skipping against the sand—hitting a crazy riff on her air guitar. The electric piano held the melody, her vocals held the chorus—the message spoke for itself.

    ”Feel the drive~
When hell's breaking loose come and dance with me!
Fever dies, I am what I am and you're out of my league
Can't catch up, but we're still in the fight!
Might never take the lead but I tell myself: Don't mind
'Cause I'm betting all on me!”

Combee were meant to buzz, Miltank were meant to moo, and tables were meant to be turned. Nua knew they were all immutable facts, not up for debate or argument or questioning by anybody who hadn't caught the wrong end of a bucking Tauros as a kid. To say otherwise would be like...like saying Suita wasn't the cutest Pokémon to have hit the sand twirling all morning — nothing short of cognitive dissonance!

Yeah, yeah, it was all true, but as Nua watched the tables get turned on her and Suita she wasn't thinking 'oh, naturally.'

No, it was more like 'WHAT THE HELL?!'

She gritted her teeth as she watched Suita's quad-barrel Psybeam connect, only for his clones to get POOFED! away the moment they were all back on the sand. The pirouette wasn't their move, sure, she'd give their opponents that, but the double-team-combo-move-shtick?! Apparently Drizzile weren't the blue lizards that she'd so hastily mistaken them for, but were in fact no-good copy cats!

The Water Gun spiral covered too wide an area to straight up dodge, and moved too quickly to call out a counter. It WASHED! over Suita, and though most of the jets were fake the real one managed to catch him in the legs and SWEEP! the Kirlia off his feet. He spun forward and faceplanted in the sand, and in the moment it took Suita to collect himself Nua glanced up at the fancy-shmancy holographic screen displaying their points. The decent total they'd gotten for their performance so far was already being chipped away by the battle's momentum shift — seriously?!

"That won't do," Nua muttered. She focused her attention back on Suita, who had gotten back to his feet and was watching her over his shoulder. He needed more direction, her hand guiding him again, and Nua knew just what to do. To hell with saving their tricks for the later matches — they were going all out!

"Let them hear your song, Suita!" She called out with her hands cupped around her mouth. "<<Teleport>> into <<Disarming Voice>>!"

The Kirlia nodded, turned to the droves of duplicated Drizzile, and curtsied.

VOOM!

In the blink of an eye, Suita was gone. He reappeared high above the Drizzile with pink energy gathered around, and the soundwaves from his Disarming Voice CASCADED! down in the same sort of spiral he demonstrated in the appeal round!

Seeing Suita topple over was like a wave of relief to Laurie. A Water Gun of relief, even. They hastily tried to wipe the sweat from their brow with their forearm. Battling for an audience was proving to be equally thrilling and terrifying. But there was no time to dwell. The ticking timer wasn't going to wait for them.

Laurie, Drizzile, and all the Drizzile dupes were taken aback by Suita's sudden reappearance in the air. In unplanned unison they all looked up, squinting into the harsh sunlight. There was hardly time to blink before the golden sun became flashes of pink spiraling down. The clones were swooshed away, and Drizzle once again found himself being knocked back into the hot sand.

Instinctively, his shining tongue struck back out, trying to snatch Suita from the air. If he was successful, he would go straight into a Bind. Laurie, meanwhile, was still stunned from the combination of sunlight and Suita's attack.

Suita was no Flying-type Pokémon, nor did he have much battle experience outside of the occasional trip to Petalburg Woods. From her spot on the ground, Nua could see the possiblility of dodging out of the way, blasting the tongue back, or teleporting to safety. Hell, even just dodging out of the way could've done the job. The Kirlia stayed true to his name, though, and must not've thought of a single thing before the Drizzile's grotesque appendage WRAPPED! around him and SNAPPED! him downward.

Ew!

Unable to alight properly, Suita kicked up a cloud of sand when he plummeted down. The Kirlia struggled against Drizzile's grasp, and only just managed to get his shaky legs underneath him before the grip tightened and he fell again.

Nua bit her cheek. Suita was out cold, and the announcer's proclamation of Laurie's victory rang in her ears like a stray Hyper Beam had just passed inches from her head. She walked out onto the battlefield to where her little buddy lay, and returned him to his Poké Ball with a soft, "Sorry, Suita."

The girl spun back around and nearly started walking off, but there was something she almost forgot. Nua looked over her shoulder at her opponent and gave them a short wave of her hand — "Good battle, I guess. I'll see you again if you make it to the final stage."

She took out a pair of sleek gold-and-green sunglasses and slipped them on, and took her leave of the battlefield. Suita needed healing before the next match, and she needed a second to sit down and figure out what the HELL just happened.

Laurie watched on, dumfounded. Drizzile had taken matters into his own hands. It wasn't uncommon for him to act of his own accord - in battle or in general life. This was not necessarily how they would have chosen to respond. Sure, Drizzile's tongue was cool and had plenty of tricks, but definitely not what you'd call conventionally appealing in a contest.

An attempt to stutter out a command was interrupted by the announcer booming over the speakers. Suita was unable to continue battling.

What on earth just happened?

For several moments, all Laurie could do was stand there blinking. Drizzile gave his trainer a proud poke, grinning as if to say 'look what I did'. He was met with an affectionate hand on his head.

"Thank you! Good luck!" Laurie called after Nua. They really admired how calm and collected she seemed, even in the face of defeat. If you hadn't just seen the end of the battle, it wouldn't have been clear who the victor actually was.

"Right, you." Laurie returned their attention to Drizzile. "Let's get you sorted out before our next battle." The pair hurried off to find Nurse Joy. And a cold drink, hopefully.
