John pulled his weapon down as he lighted a flare and threw a flare next to the fence. He saw a tell and pulled a weapon. "Theres a fox digging!" John said trying to scare off whatever it was.

Calla shook her head. "I can't carry him out if you get caught," she whispered and continued to dig. "Just go... follow me after they're gone."

Calla whimpered quietly and continued to work at the hard dirt. The cold was beginning to numb her fingers and she was grateful for the lessening of pain, but it began to feel like her fingers were rubbing against a cheese grater. As the shot was fired she looked up and glared. "What?" she asked rudely. "You think we're scared of a little gunfire?" she asked, pushing her hair back from her face.

Kitty looked at the man and then at Calla. "I'll get them ready," she muttered, running back into the woods.

Calla nodded and continued to dig. The hole she had worked was now below the fence itself and she was beginning to make her way through to the other side, but it wasn't quick enough in her opinion.

John jumped as the animal spoke. "What are you?" John said as Clarke aimed his gun at her. "Sir these are what the commander was talking about.." He said as John hesitated to aim his weapon.

Calla rolled her eyes. "I'm a girl," she said. "My name is Calla and I'd appreciate it if you didn't point your weapon at me," she said and raised her eyebrow.

She rolled her eyes. "You're trained to shoot first and ask questions later. Tell me, have I ever done anything to you? Have I hurt you or attacked you?"

"Look were Soldiers girl we are here on orders to kill anything here" Clarke said about to pull the trigger as john grabbed the barrel of his gun and pushed it down.

"I know what soldiers are," she said. "But there is a difference between soldiers and murderers. Soldiers fight wars, but in order to go to a war the cause must be just. Is murdering a group of people who have never harmed anyone a just reason?" she asked and smiled at John softly. Her hands still worked at the mud, the scent of her blood tinging the air as a cruel reminder of her pain.

Calla smiled softly at him and moved over to let him help. "Thanks Joe," she whispered to him, ignoring the soldiers for the moment.

His hands had protection and so the scrabbling hurt him less but it was also less effective

"Well take them back to the colonel" John said making an excuse to make him not shoot them. Clarke sighed and got on his radio calling the other soldiers. Soon about thirty were there but all on standby as john pulled out a small shovel and helped them on the other side.

Calla called out to Kitty, whimpering as her hands touched the dirt. Tears flooded her eyes but she held them back, not wanting to cry in front of the soldiers.

As they broke through the other side, Calla pulled back and sat on the edge of the hole, staring up at John.

Calla jumped down into the hole and scampered up the other side, brushing dirt from her tail. She looked around at the wide open space that she had often gazed across from the other side and thought about running but she knew she couldn't. She couldn't just leave the others behind her. She looked up at John again and watched him curiously. "I've never met a soldier before," she said quietly.
