[Occam's Razor] [Occam's Razor] Occam's Razor: The Colorado Incident

Nidelia stepped in and looked around. Oh great, looks like the Military had a tiny army starting up. She once again was reminded why she didn't like military types. She walked over to a chair always away from any of them and sat down. She was still.in nothing but her Cryo suit.

This was lovely. She didn't enjoy the idea of working in military camps or on military bases, but looks like she sis t get a choice now. Oh well, what could a girl do when she woke up to a world like this? She would do it, but she definitely wasn't going to enjoy it.

The Captain smiled nervously at his Commander, the man could seriously use some scented candles and a good lay, but he did as he was told and pulled the logs from when this all started. He hadn't gone this far back, focusing instead on the more recent happenings. Taking into consideration that this sort of briefing might occur, of course. Even so, he was having a hard time processing it all... But, hell, he was a damn Ranger! He'd been in tougher spots! He was just... having a hard time remembering any of them.

Just as the logs appeared on-screen, the mainframe opened a prompt alerting to a low charge. Woods had turned his back to the device, to watch the newcomer, recognizing her as the woman he had relieved, he gave her a curt nod to show he knew she was there before facing the Commander once again, awaiting his rundown of events. He was certain he had a good grasp of what had conspired, but the Commander could bring to light new information.

Malcom nodded to Nidelia as she came in, "Glad you could join us, Now while we wait for Bianca." He moved over besided the Captain, and looked over the power display, "Why isn't it interfacing with the main grid... we got the core back online..." He narrowed his eyes at it and pulled up the relay information. He took a moment to examine what it was telling him, and being that he wasnt a technical engineer, he sighed as he stared at it all, "What I wouldn't give for a nerd right about now..." He tapped a prompt and it showed him the power conduits between there and the core, a local conduit wasn't set. He checked the schematic a few times over and moved to the wall panel, "This... One...?" He pulled the panel off the wall, a switch, a set of rotors, and a series of unplugged relay cords was behind it. He frowned, and turned the rotors by hand, letting the plugs slide neatly into place, then he flipped the switch. As he did, The entire facility came back online. He frowned and shrugged, "Huh... must have been some sort of preservation mechanism." With the core online, and the facility back online, the full security grid came online, and a moment later, the central database issued a prompt on the main Screen, -Situation?- It read. Malcom had noticed it pop up. He was surprised by it honestly, and he moved over to the console, standing next to Captain woods. "Input Long Walk Scenario." Rather then wait for someone to type it, the computer accepted the code, and the next prompt read, -Welcome Acting Commander Devontess, Malcom.- Malcom let out a low whistle, "Guess things get fun now..."

Nadia was glad that her jest was taken so well, she was relieved to see her CC laugh so whole-heartedly. She even chuckled a little with him, which helped elevate her stress and anxiety. She quickly shaped up once Malcom began talking business, although this time his expression was a lot lighter than previously. "So what's your idea, CC?" she knew he asked her to be less formal, but she didn't want to talk that way with him in front of the others.

As the new girl came in she turned and gave a tiny wave, acknowledging her presence for a moment before turning her attention back to Malcom as she noticed the facility come to life. "I can't wait for the party to start." she said under her breath. She meant it and not at the same time. She needed to move her body, but she understood that the opponent they were facing was out for blood. Truly not what one would want as their warm-up, but beggars can't be choosers when their thrown into a situation like this. She stood attentive, awaiting the next commands and a little curious as to how many of those beasts were out there.

Malcom looked at the computer for a moment before saying, "Bring up motion tracking from..." He paused to think, then did the math in his head, "2055 to 2070, isolate, Would it be isolate... Logs for when hostile targets began appearing." he watched as the computer went to work, it brought up the recordings rapidly, each was twenty four hours long and each of them began playing, Malcom watched, it was in real time, so it was useless unless he had it sped up, "Speed up by..." He crossed his arms over his chest, considering things, "Eight times speed, show us video logs of the first breach in real time." The computer brought up both in separate feeds. Malcom watched the first recording...

It displayed a door being opened, and a red dot moving against a blue dot, the blue dot blinked out a moment later and more red dots flooded the facility. On the other screen, there was a man walking down a hallway, heading to only he knew where, when the main doors to the facility opened, the main paused, and turned, the clip-board and pencil in his hands fell as his shoulders slumped in shock, he started backing away when a horribly mutated creature, that looked like a cross between a lion, a horny toad and a crocodile leaps at him with a roar, tearing him apart and devouring him. It was soon followed by hundreds of it's fellows, and it let out a fierce roar before moving into the facility." Malcom said, "Stop, isolate that and tell us what happened." The computer paused the recordings and replayed it, a voice echoed out, "On //Data Corrupted// an error occurred in the central program for the door mechanisms, the primary doors to the colorado facility opened, approximately fifteen hours early, The error included a syntax bug that caused the main doors to link to the primary observation tower's door controls. It has since been repaired. No further incidents should occur." The program said coldly.

Malcom was shocked at the voice, more shocked at the data, "An error caused all of this... What's the status of the front doors now? Are they open." The voice echoed out again. "No... They were closed approximately fifty minutes ago by Acting Commander Malcom Devontess." Malcom sighed, muttering, "At least we wont be getting any others in through the front."

Nidelia shuddered and hugged herself as she watched. A glitch... a glitch?! She looked around the room. There was no way she was the only one thinking it, so she decided to voice it.

"If a glitch in the system caused this, what is to prevent it from happening again?" She asks shakily as she looks around. She really didn't like the idea of stitching people up right after an attack like that. If she could.

Meanwhile Rys had made her way back to her vials on the stairs and grabbed them and had gone back to her labs where she was testing and examining the blood.

Nadia's eyes widened in astonishment and horror for a few seconds before she pulled herself together. 'You've got to be kidding me! A malfunction was the cause of all of this! Fucking Chimeras from hell waltzed in through the front door and all that thing can say is "OOPS!". This is definitely worse than I could've imagined.

Nadia sat back and thought to herself. 'I wonder if this was just some glitch and not some attack from the outside or even an inside job. This facility and everyone in it was here for a specific purpose, and then suddenly the front door opens as a brigade of those hellish creatures are waiting outside it...maybe I'm just thinking too much into this' she said to herself as she took her eyes form the screen and pondered on it further.

"The doors were only closed just recently...is there anyway for that thing to sweep the facility and tell us how many non-human subjects are in this place?" she hoped the answer was "No", because after watching how many came in right off the bat, she could only imagine how many more might have come through since the doors had been open.

The Captain nodded as the information was fed to them, or to be more accurate, Acting Commander Malcom Devontess. He had loosened up and turned to face the screen at angle, ensuring the others could see the images on screen. As gruesome as it was, it was fact, and no amount of crying or whining was going to change that. He had already assumed it was the result of some sort of error, that or an inside job, as ridiculous as it sounded. With the world seeming to have gone insane, he wasn't going to dismiss any possibility, no matter how crazy.

He took in air, exhaling it roughly and crossing his arms, his brow furrowed in concentration as he continued to examine the constantly streaming evidence before him.

Malcom frowned and tapped the bio-signature detection protocols, "We did that as soon as we got in here, Jace and I... Uh.. We trapped most of them. It would be prudent to expand to search to motion though, as we've seen the bio-signature test only picks up the creatures some of the time. Uh... Run motion detection, compensate for micro-movement including breathing and slight movements. Filter out any known personel that have come out of cryo in the past... Three hours." He estimated, staring at the readouts as the system did the filtration scan. What showed up, horrified him. Of the ten levels of the cryogenics facility, each level consisting of a series of tunnels filled with cryogenics paitents save for the top two floors, all of them were covered in scattered movement signatures, all very slight. Malcom grit his teeth firmly, muttering, "So... It looks like we have our work cut out for us..." He knew that so far everyone that had woken up so far had been in floors B2 and B3, B2 being the miltary wing, and B3 being the first of the civilian wings. Malcom sighed and said, "Restrict all lift access, seal all bulkheads bewtween floors.." He tapped the map in two points. "From here, to there. If you caught that." The computer's cold voice echoed out again, "Yes Commander Devontess." Within seconds the floors were sealed. Malcom continued, "Now, Seal off all of those sections cryo wings, and prevent any cryogenics chambers from opening until further notice." Again, the computer followed orders. Malcom nodded, and paused, Nidelia's question stuck in his mind "Is there any way to prevent the scenario that caused the former containment breach?" He asked the computer. The computer took a moment, perhaps calculating responses before it said, "There are several ways. The most efficent would be to seal the outer doors of the facility and place them on a closed activation circut allowing for only manual release." Malcom nodded, asking, "Can that be done from here?" The system took a moment to consider things, before replying, "Not entirely... I can run the programs required to shut off the doors but it will open them due to the failsafes. You will need to close each of them with the manual release mechanisms alternate use to reseal the facility." Malcom frowned, blinking, he felt stupid but he thought... "So your saying, I need to open the place up wide, to lock it down, is that right?" The computers voice came back, saying as though it didnt want to, "Yes..." Malcom grit his teeth and looked over to Nidelia, "You just... Had to ask..." He sighed and said, "So people... What do we solve first... The mystery signatures... Or the doors of doom?"

Woods sucked in breath, "Work cut out for us indeed, sir..." He did not like the looks of that... Then again, it would really depend on the breed of infected. If it were mostly comprised of humanoids, the matter was much simpler. But if they were... he searched for a proper term... Beasts? Chimeras? Wargs? They'd need some sort of designation soon... A nameless enemy is a mystery, it is frightening, if not goddamn terrifying, but if you give it a name... Then it's defined, bound to reality. A tap on a window pane in the middle of the night can spook just about anybody, but when you find it's just a tree branch... it's still eerie, but at least you know what it is... He shook his head, he'd started off on a tangent... If it was the big hairy beasties, it could mean serious trouble.

The Captain looked back to the screen after the Commander had offered his question. "Doors of Doom, sir. Slightly less risk involved."

Nadia sat back and took in all the information as Malcom asked the computer questions and received responses. After seeing the display of how many things there were moving about on the different levels, she felt a little nauseas. Hopefully they weren't all composed of those beast-like things, because then they would clearly not only run out of ammo but out of personnel as well. She was all for a fight but given that there were two choices on the table, they needed to pic the one that would conserve the most resources for the second. Captain Woods had spoken up first and casted his vote for the Doors of Doom, a logical choice that Nadia was about to stand behind.

"I agree with Woods on the choice of action to be taken here." she said matter-of-factly. She didn't like the idea of having to open the place up to close it down though, because clearly there was the risk of inviting more unwanted company. The only good thing that she saw in the scenario was perhaps even with the doors opening, they could easily aim at the targets as they tried to enter, knowing that eventually the doors were going to close permanently, and then they would just have to deal with however many got it. "When the doors do open and have to close again, how long will it take for the doors to close?" she wanted to know how long they'd have to hold down each door so she could at least get her mind right. Nothing like opening the gate to hell and having to hold position for an undisclosed amount of time and pray that the devil is too tired to come out and play.

Malcom paused, and said, "Actually... there is one other problem we need to Address... Bring up the file of Jace Bradley. Display it spread out on all monitors." Malcom sighed and motioned to the screens as the man's details came up, "Nidelia, Can you please, for the record of this issue tell us your opinion of Mister Bradley, in detail." He looked at her, knowing he was putting her on the spot. Malcom's face was calm, and collected as he waited for her reply.

((I wish Lori was on or had been on lately so we could get Bianca's opinion too :| ))

Nadia rolled her eyes at the sound of the man's name. She didn't really want to talk about a degenerate like that at a time like this, the way she saw it he was simply an extra body. He was proficient at killing, and that was okay with her under the circumstance, but he was definitely not someone she deemed trustworthy at all. She'd just as well have him used as cannon fodder or just keep him with one of them to keep him in line, clearly he shouldn't be trusted with anything of actual importance. She understood that he had been fully pardoned due to the current state of things, but that didn't mean he was any less a risk or any less a danger to everyone else. He clearly didn't play well with others, take commands well, and didn't seem to be one to follow instructions unless it either suited him at the time or he got something in return. She held her tongue though and waited to hear what Nidelia had to say about the man.

The file would read off his own personal history from birth to the date of his awakening:

Birth at 7:06 AM at Calvary Hospital, Bronx NY NY:: March 3rd 2009

Age 6, sent to Queen's Orphanage due to mother's death due to Heroin Overdose

School information:

Graduated 1st Grade. A+'s

Graduated 2nd Grade. A+'s

Graduated 3rd Grade. C-'s

Graduated 4th Grade. C-'s

Graduated 5th Grade. B's

Graduated 6th Grade. C-'s

Graduated 10th Grade. D

Graduated 11th Grade. D

Never Finished 12th Grade. GED also never acquired.

Remained at the Orphanage until Age 18. Acquired Driver's license the same day. Purchased (unlawfully)a house as well. 'Unknown' source of income.

Disappeared from New York's listings on March 10th. Never paid utilities.

Banking information:
**showing payments spanning from Maine to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, etc etc** Large payments given to many of the schools and cities all along the east coast. Approximately $3,932,804,393.56 in charitable donations. (Just short of 4 billion dollars) Minor transactions include ATM withdraws of 300 dollar increments spanning entire months. (Probably just enough to live off of) Additionally, there's a payment for a large "Weight-Bench" and multiple ranging sets of dumbells. The purchase was picked up, not delivered.

Arrested on February 12th In Cleveland Ohio under suspicion of possible link to a string of homicides spanning the east coast.

With overwhelming evidence persons found guilty of 366 accounts. Also found conclusive audio evidence of connection to 30 different drug rings. All of which were detailing hits on their competitors or suppliers of said competitors. Case was then expanded in attempt to link persons with six hundred more 'bizarre' killings, but results were inconclusive.

Felony Records from 2027-2032:: Found guilty of 366 Counts of Murder and Numerous Auto Theft. Out of all Murders, 200 of which were vicious stabbings, 90 of which were by gun-fire,70 by use of explosives, 6 by ''hunter traps'' ((Further information on 'hunter-traps' would show the pictures taken at the scenes, revealing people hung *neck* by wired hooks, snared bodies dangling by their mutilated legs from where the metal wire cut into them, and two where the ends of pipes were sharpened and used via trip-wire and held up by the same mechanism to swing inwards and gore the victim. The second of which had the pipe stuck through the person's face. All tools used, of course, were things he could receive EASILY in the base they were all in. Also, Malcom would have realized that Jace WAS carrying on him numerous, long, metal cables as well as industrial 'clip-hooks' and other string-like items that would indicate he was very well capable of setting up 'traps' like he apparently had done before.))

Additional Personal Information: It was found out that Mr. Bradley had spent 6 hours each day lifting weights and eating either stolen food or steaks he had paid off those who load it into store-houses to keep him supplied with them. And apparently had been doing so for the previous 5 years before his capture. When he could not cook said meat, he merely ate it raw, and preferred the 'cooked' steak as "Medium-Rare". His short few weeks in prison eating their food also caused him quite a bit of grief and he grew more violent as the days went on.

Due to immediate admittance to his crimes, and by how he reacted in court, Mr. Bradley was Sentenced to Death by way of Public
BROADCASTED Electrocution ((A procedure that was ousted years before, strangely, and was set to be done so in an audience of his peers as well as the entire United States))

Death Sentence Altered at last minute on October 4th of 2033 in favor of Cryogenics Program by un-specified Ranking Official and was taken to Illinois Cryogenics Laboratory in "Cook County" Illinois. This lead to much public outcry. It was later found out that the sponge that was set to go on Mr. Bradley's head had never been plunged into water before the time due of said event.

Experiment #00 Moved from Illinois Cryogenics Laboratory to Colorado on date: 6/20/2034

#00 switched containment pod on 6/25/2034

#00's information was gathred on 6/30/2034 for use for the advancement of 'Cryogenic Effects Research'.

Additional Cryogenics Experimental Information:: \\Deleted on Date: 6/14/2037\\ By un-specified Ranking Official

If anyone decided to click on the recorded 'evidence', then as the first played In the audio files, Jace's voice can be heard talking to some other man. The audio of course coming from the tape that linked him with such drug ring. Even if the 'link' was pre-broken. "Yeah, I can do that. You don't need any of them to speak afterwards, do you?" To which the gentleman replied with a 'no'. The next bit was of him laughing as a man shouted out "No, NO!! Please don't do this! I can pay you! I'll do whatever you want!" To which some other man laughed along with Jace. Of course Jace just answered with "What if I want you to die? Could you pay me with a few tears?" To which a blood-curdling screem was cut off with gurgles as if the guy were drowning. And finally the last file played out some other man speaking. "You did good, Tox. I heard you come with risks, but I guess those other fools were just unlucky." To which Jace responded with a cold "Yeah, they were..." And was followed by gun-fire as four or so other men shouted out in pain, followed by the guy he was talking to. Jace's voice rang back into the audiance's ears. "Guess today wasn't your day, you fat F.U.C.K." followed by the sound of a bag being picked up and then eerie silence for 5 minutes straight as if some recording device were in Jace's pocket.

On Jace's Monitor: Beside the entrance of the room, Jace's duffle bag was open, showing several long coils of metal cables, boot-strings, a small chain wrapped in cloth to mainly keep it silent, as well as numerous other small wires as well as his 'glass knife' he had made.

Nidelia looked at the floor when it was finished. "He's a pig, who obviously thinks he's Gods gift to women, and I believe would backstab any one of you men here," she says matter of factly.

She then looks up at them. "And the fact that he thinks he has a right to go around and have sex with any woman that has woken up just makes it worse," she says eyeing the female ranger whome she had not met yet. She sighs and looks away saying nothing more.

Nadia scoffed audibly as she glared at Malcom. The only reason that garbage was still alive was because he made her stand down, and she was true to following orders. Hearing what Nidelia had to say infuriated her and she knew that her face was showing her anger, but she couldn't keep calm. There was nothing more irritating than men like him, especially one with his background. He was practically a ticking time bomb. Extra body or not he was a potential mad dog that needed to be put down. She looked at the girl for a moment and then went back to glaring at Malcom while trying to calm her brewing rage. 'I'll end that bastard if I get the chance, and if he ever tries to pull a stunt like that in my presence, he'll definitely lose his life' she thought as she took her eyes from Malcom and stared at the floor for a bit.

Woods sighed, mildly disgruntled. From his file, Jace came off as the worst sort of human... But his skillset could prove useful... He didn't like the idea of him roaming freely, especially since most of the civs seemed to be female... What was with that, anyway? It was as if the beasts preffered men over women... More meat on the bones, maybe? Who knew, but it was certainly odd. But if they could coerce Jace into an alliance, perhaps they could make use of the mad dog...

He ceased his musings, returning his attention to the map, attempting to formulate some plan, whatever they decided.

Nadia looked up at the map and was completely and utterly confused. There seemed to be way too many doors for them to have to cover and they didn't have the man power for such a thing. She didn't want to sound pessimistic or anything but she wasn't liking what she was looking at, yet then again she was a Ranger and she was use to the odds never being in her favor. It would almost be exciting if the enemy wasn't some nightmarish creature. "So any ideas how you want to seal the Doors of Doom? Because from just looking at this, it would seem that we would definitely need an army to pull this task off or at least a good while to get traps and whatnot set in place before making a move." she was trying to take her ind of the womanizing death machine that was allowed to gallivant throughout the facility.

Malcom sighed, and nodded at Nidelia, "Honest as it could ever be I suppose, Thank you."

He nodded at her again sincerely. Malcom turned to the records again, "Lets go over his records and see the kind of person he was before the freeze, because I don't know about the rest of you, but I've known some real lechers in my time in the military. When I was overseas during Israel, during downtime, I saw a lot worse..."

He wasn't excusing the behavior, but he'd grown used to seeing such things of other men. He pulled up the murder counts, and whistled at the list, each victim was listed, as he went over each name, more then half of them were tagged as criminals, or suspected criminals, the other half were confirmed associates of criminals or police informants.

Malcom narrowed his eyes, muttering, "Like a god damn cleaner this one, just like the old mafia movies..."

He tapped the list again, highlighting details and points that interested him, pulling Jace's criminal history apart with a fine toothed come. He took a step back when it was all laid out before him, he looked at the screen, and said, "Alright people, Here's the deal. The animal we know, that we can look in the eye and keep it on equal footing..."

Malcom looked among them, "Or the beasts we know nothing about, that decimated our civilization and scared us into a hole in the ground... Which would you rather deal with..."

He was trying to remain neutral, trying to let the others speak their minds and show him what they wanted. Jace "Tox" Bradley was certainly a bad man, but he was also a killer of other bad men, and when it came to his financials, all of it ended up in the mouths of babes.

Woods was the first to speak out, after a short pause, his words echoing his thoughts. "I don't like the idea of his roaming freely, but I do think his skillset could prove useful."

He shrugged, repositioning himself to lean against the console. "I say we keep him, but on a 'probationary' basis." He put emphasis on probationary. "We let him stay, on the condition he behave. He fucks up, we fuck him up."

"Like I said, he could be useful. Call it a necessary evil."

Malcom crossed his arms, and nodded, "That's actually where were already at with him, It's sort of a... We need his help, we call for him, Otherwise he'll just keep to himself in the meantime." Malcom replied with a shrug, "I don't know if we can trust him, but he'll be a lot more use to us alive then dead. Even more use to us if he views us on equal footing in his mind." Malcom knew the score, knew the group would never trust the man, But he didn't care about that, He needed the manpower, and he would take what he could get for the time being, "In all honesty. The man is physically more capable then anyone standing in this room in regards to brute force. I know I can outlast him in stamina, but I doubt I could take many blows from him in a fight and stay standing. I want that brute force on our side. Anyone have anything to say before we make any kind of decision on it?"

Nadia grimaced a bit. It was true that that man was definitely of better use to them all alive rather than dead, but it still pissed her off. She truly couldn't say anything that would really matter except express her general distaste for the man, but she doubted anyone here really thought he was a standup guy. The only thing that would throw her over the edge is if a female civ came to her about problems with him, if that happened, even if he had hulk-like strength, she was still gonna do her best to teach that murder machine a lesson. Patience and Tolerance can only go so far, and this guy, just in their brief encounter today, had used up nearly all she had for him. "He's clearly of better use to us alive, I just hope he understands that when it's time to follow orders that they need to be followed, and that there will be no room for negotiations when we're standing in the fire. " she said, looking to Malcom.

"Well regardless the way I see it is that we obviously need to be able to secure these entrances before we decide on opening anything. I don't recall this place having a turrets anywhere, which would've been of great use," she was thinking out loud and pacing a bit, "Obviously I haven't gone through all our ammunitions yet, but I doubt there will be a crate filled with proximities mines or something to that affect." she frowned a bit. She wasn't sure what exactly it was that they would need to do or what exactly the best action to take would be, looking up at the map, seeing all those doors, and remembering how many of those things were already in here shook her off her game a bit. This was no test or simulation, this was the real thing, and even the tiniest mistake during this could easily cost the deaths of multiple people. This was something that needed to be thoroughly thought through before anything was set in stone as "The Plan".

Malcom nodded slowly, "Yeah, Were severely limited, which is why we need Jace..." He motioned to the three dimensional map, saying, "We can defend what, Two doors tops reasonably? Look at Jace's arrest record..." He motioned to the more savage of the killings, the ones with traps. With a shrug, Malcom says, "He knows the relative height and strength of these things. I do too but I'm not some Green Beret or a Black Ops or something. Wish I was... but currently, He's our best chance of sealing the doors safely and minimizing our risks and losses." Malcom sighs, and leans against the console, saying, "I say we wake him up, let him know whats going on, tell him we cleared out this section... I told him that we were keeping this room sealed until we were sure it was safe. Keep that in mind please." He said, rubbing his face. "So who want's to go poke the bear?" He grinned widely.

Nadia stepped forward. "I'll wake him. We can start the second lesson of our trust exercise on the walk up here." she said as she looked at Malcom, face calm and even. She really didn't want to be the person to do it, but she figured that this interaction with him might help her hate him less in the long run. She was going to have to rely on this man to help them survive so she wanted to at least immerse herself in her presence, and this was an opportunity to do just that. No point in shying away from someone if in the end their suppose to have your back and you're suppose to have theirs. She wanted to size him up herself without backup and see if she could handle being around the man.
