BLOOD STAINED GIRL
A willingness to kill. That’s half of the making of a perfect Phoenix. It’s all some could do, all some are cut out to do. Mindless murder. That’s all some saw Hector as. A mindless murderer. It was that attribute that he was tested against in his trials after all.
But he wasn’t, he wasn’t just a grunt, a common thug. He knew he was more than that. That’s why he put himself up for so many jobs, that’s why he was recruited by the King herself, that’s why he tried to know all his fellow Phoenixes. Some were only meant to be workers, but Hector had potential. He knew what he had to do for the family.
Ah, family. Devotion to family. That was the second half of a perfect Phoenix.
It remained to be seen whether the blood-stained girl could devote herself to the family, if she could remain loyal to anything but the growling of her stomach. But following his orders was a good start. Hector looked past the girl, down the dark road that awaited them.
“You can eat soon. Let’s walk.”
And down he walked, plunging himself into the darkness.
“To the light there. See the door?”
He paused to let Raquel go in front of him again. His initial concerns were renewed now that he couldn’t quite see her, and he was still no fool. About halfway down the dark street was indeed a light, just a small porch light that illuminated a metal door. No signs of life lingered around it, just Hector and Raquel.
