this is the basic idea of events that have happened between Return of the Jedi and the Start of New Jedi Order. You can add/ expand the timeline. Not everything has been filled in.
[Year 1 Formation of Republic and facturing of Empire
The New Republic-
founded five months after Endor. Their starting council Mon Mothma, Admirial Ackbar, Bothan Borsk Fey'lya, Leia Organa-Solo, General Crix Mandine.
Jakuu- Due to information given to the NR by a man named Operator they launched an attack on the desert planet of Jakuu a year after Endor. The attacked fractured the Empire into three groups. One lead by a Grand Admiral Rae Sloane went into the unknown regions. While another lead by a Captain Gilad Pellaeon pulled back to the outer rim. The third lesser in power though still strong controlled by chief of security Issard held control of Currasant.
The New Republic-

Jakuu- Due to information given to the NR by a man named Operator they launched an attack on the desert planet of Jakuu a year after Endor. The attacked fractured the Empire into three groups. One lead by a Grand Admiral Rae Sloane went into the unknown regions. While another lead by a Captain Gilad Pellaeon pulled back to the outer rim. The third lesser in power though still strong controlled by chief of security Issard held control of Currasant.
Year 2 The Issard Trilogy
Currasant- With the victory at Jakuu the NR focused on capturing Imperial Center. To do so they launched a covert mission lead by Rouge and Nova squadrons Rogue riled the population into riots. While Nova got to work destroying Currasant's shield generators and orbital platforms. By the time the fleet arrived currasant was only controlled by a meger fleet. Though they discovered holding the planet would be harder than expected
The Rakghoul Trap- Issard seeing currasant as expendable launched an ancient bio weapon that infected people turning them into monsters the Rakghoul (Knights of the Old Republic). The New Republic had to abandon the planet for a time Until a team lead by Master Skywalker was able to find a cure. Though they were able to stop the spread of the infection ten percent of Currasant's population was killed.
End of Issard- The NR recovering from the Rakghoul plague launched an assault on Thyferra to put an end to Issard. Rogue Squadron was able to capture the Super Star Destroyer Lucancia cutting off Issards retreat. The NR was able to capture her. She would be the first public execution.

While she and her people were slowly building something up in the Unknown Regions she wanted to stayed informed of the going ons in the galaxy proper. Over the course of the year they, Gideon, Zsinj and a few others banded together under the Shadow Council.

Operation Cinder
Operator-
Deep in the core a man by the codename Operator said he spoke for the Emperor. Once he came into contact with the shadow council he explained he was behind the travesty of Jakuu. Stating that it was apart of the Emperor's plan. Now it was time to enact the second part of the plan.
The others though skeptical of this man agreed to go along with the plan.
Operation: Cinder- It happened quickly as the Warlord Zsinj's Super Star Destroyer Iron Fist dropped out of hyperspace above the former Imperial loyalist world of Navaria. They quickly took control of orbit and sent down satalites to destroy the planets atmosphere.
Zsinj and other Imperial warlords would do this to other planets Mon Cala, Naboo, Vardos, Chandrila and many more.
The New Repulic was able to save some planets but others weren't as lucky. By the end millions were dead. Planets became uninhabitable and a good portion of the New Republic funds went to helping the refugees.
Pellaeon's stand/ The Imperial Civil War- Admiral Pellaeon couldn't deal with the senseless violence that this Operator was having them do. He pulled his forces away. This did not go well as the Operator had Zainj's ships start attacking those loyal to Pelleaon. This further fractured the Empire allowing the New Republic to move in on their territory.
Sloane stayed out of the conflict as did Gideon though he secretly giving his dark troopers to Zsinj.
When all seemed lost for Pellaeon a message came with a set of rendezvous cordenants.
The return- After the rendezvous Pellaeon's forces become more organized fallowing tactics no one would've thought of. Within two standard months they were able to push Zsinj out of Pellaeons territory.
Pellaeon got in contact with what was left of the Shadow Council Sloan, Gideon, and a couple of covert spies. Instead of them seeing the graying old man they saw a blue skinned humanoid with dark red eyes looking at them.
Operator-
