His breathing is more like gasping as his heart pounded hard against his chest. There's feverish flush blooming in his pale cheeks.

"He-! He-!" Renee started, the purple bird skin looking darker as she paled. "He was swaying and when I asked if he was okay, he just fainted." She checked on his pulse, his forehead felt really hot and she looked at Kenren with furrowed brows. Her wings still flapping wildly.

" He has a fever. Help me carry him to your bed. I need to check if there's anything else wrong." She pleaded. If he did, she would follow and continue to check everywhere. When she finished, Renee looked terribly sad and worried.

Kenren immediately did as Renee asked and carried Chenglei with a surprising show of gentleness to his bed. He called for healers to come immediately as well. "What's going on? How can I help, Renee?" he said as the healers came running to see what was the matter with the swordsman.

The prince stepped back to let them do their work at Renee's instructions.

Renee backed away as she watched the other healers do their work before looking at Kenren. "Ken-chan, there isn't much to do other then making sure his fever doesn't run high." She frowned as she looked back at the swordsman in bed. She didn't even realize that she's using her old nickname for him after so many days of calling him 'Prince'.

"He's exhausted. Completely burned out. I knew he wasn't sleeping well and Echo told me he wasn't eating much at dinner which is weird. Was he eating lunch with you? Like eating eating?" Renee asked.

Then she sighed. "All you can do is find out why he is doing this to himself." Her wings limped while the healers lowered his fever and left the room. "Take care of him. Call me if anything else happens, okay?" Just as she was about to leave, Renee paused and looked back at Kenren.

"Oh....and you might want to look in a mirror...there's something on your face..." She closed the door behind her.

"Thank you, I'll take care of him." said Kenren to Renee after telling her Chenglei just watched him eat during lunch. He was relieved that he only had a fever to keep in check and Chenglei didn't faint because of something very serious. Then he wondered, why did Renee not tell the healers to bring him to his own room and why did she ask him to find out what's wrong and take care of the swordsman? A healer is a better and more knowledgeable care taker.

He plopped a cool wet towel on Chenglei's forehead. He called the servants to bring him a jar of water, fruits, and bread, then laid them on the bedside table. They had taken off his shoes, belt, tight uniform and replaced it with looser but warm garments, but his sword was kept in the room, within sight. Kenren sat on the bed, looking at Chenglei calm, but with anxious eyes.

"Why have you been so depressed? You're barely eating, barely sleeping, and barely smiling." he said quietly, looking guilty.

A hand reached out to touch his cheek, but paused, then withdrew. Kenren pushed a recliner close to the bed and lay there watching over Chenglei the whole night.

Some time after midnight, Chenglei mumbled something, brows furrowed as he grunted. His breathing changed from calm to frantic almost like he's gasping. Cheeks blossoming red as he gritted his teeth like he didn't want to scream. His hands clenching into fists, knuckles turning white, his face getting paler and paler as sweat started to appear on his forehead...until-

"STOP!" Chenglei yelled desperately, eyes wide and looking around, confused and lost. His body whole shook in terror, arms shaking as he pushed himself up to sit. The blonde held his head as that pesky headache pounded, his stomach ached but he ignored that as he flinched from the warm wet towel. It fell to his lap and he practically swatted it away in a hurry like he didn't like how it felt soaking on his loose clothes.

"Wha-? Where am I?! W-what's goin' on?" He said, dazed as he panted. Dull but panicked ash purple eyes looked around rapidly unable to focus.

-Third Meeting-

Lydia's smile brightened as James said that the incident with her misfire wasn't her fault and glanced to the twins as he did. Oh yes, she would definitely have to get back at them when she got back... or maybe she could even prepare something for them while they slept so they'd have a nice surprise when they woke up. A sneaky smile drew across her lips but it was gone quicker than anyone would have noticed it, her attention shifting back to James' friend who she guessed was shy by how he was acting and she tilted her head to the side slightly as she watched him scurry off to the bathroom evidently before her arms crossed loosely over her chest, her hands cupping her elbows as she observed Renee trying to transform.

Her brow furrowed slightly as she sent thoughts of encouragement towards the older of the Pendragon sisters, she knew how frustrating it could be to be a novice in magic and just trying to get something right and in her mind, it was so much more difficult when there wasn't an actual thing to focus on, just something pictured in one's mind, she hadn't been able to do it which was why she focused on words when she cast. She offered an understanding smile to Renee as her transformation failed and she began molting feathers, though she did look on with interest as Master Howl remedied the situation, a smile drawing on her features at the sound of her Master's chuckle, "you can do it Renee!" She said enthusiastically, her hands clasping together. She continued to watch Renee as she kept trying and didn't lose her enthusiasm as she became Renee's own personal cheerleader, but when Renee finally gave up, she gave her a pat on her back, "well... you know what they say, 'practice makes perfect...' maybe next time!"

Lydia carefully climbed up on Howl's leg to the side of James where Echo wasn't, but she slipped as she was climbing and awkwardly hung on with one striped stocking covered leg hooked over a large talon, "whoops!" She giggled in embarrassment before her leg started kicking slightly as she tried to right herself before scooting up into a more secure position, clearing her throat gently and adjusting her high ponytail as a light flush fell over her cheeks.

Once they were in the air, Lydia looked around for a moment, holding on tightly and closing her eyes as the wind hit her face, her eyes popping open after the strange trickling started to occur and looked up, realizing that the sensation was magic and it was coming from Master Howl who was now transparent. She giggled slightly, her eyes wide with wonder. She always enjoyed seeing Master Howl's magic in action, it was better than anything she had read in any book about him. Of course when they actually landed, she had to swallow her protest, she felt like they were going against Mrs. Pendragon by landing on a whale when she had said only flying with the whales, but Master Howl knew what he was doing.

As Master Howl landed, Lydia clung to him more tightly when the whale seemed to do its version of a buck, laughing nervously before she really took in what they were doing, her expression shifting to one of awe as a soft gasp escaped her. She was riding on a Sky Whale with Howl Pendragon and his family.

Kenren looked up from where he was reading, and hastily put his children's dictionary aside. "Chenglei, you're safe, it's alright." he said soothingly again and again, rubbing his shoulders as the swordsman's face turned pale. He backed away when he suddenly bolted upright.

"You're in my room, you're safe. It's me, Kenren." said the prince gently, leaning forward anxiously. "You fainted, Chenglei, Renee said it was from over exhaustion. I'm going to call her, alright?" he stood up from the bed and quickly spoke to his replacement guard outside his door, then came back, picking up the discarded towel, and sitting on the recliner next to the bed, cleaning it with some water from the jar.

Chenglei gulped noisily, his face scrunched up in bewilderment. "K-Ken'en?" He flinched back when Kenren got too close, panting as he tried to get his act together. The blonde rubbed his temple, feeling dizzy from the sudden movements as everything spun around with little stars bursting in the corner of his eyes.

".....I...fainted?..."Then he looked at Kenren who's cleaning the towel with water with wide eyes. "I-I'm so sorry tah botha ya lik' dis-! I-I swear I-!" Chenglei shut his mouth tight, gritting his teeth. It's like he doesn't want to say anything else...

"I'm not bothered." said Kenren immediately, withdrawing his hand when Chenglei flinched and moved to sit far, by his writing desk instead. He didn't look offended, just careful not to make him uncomfortable. "It's alright, you can stay there, Chenglei. And just, just do whatever you need to get better."

The prince peered out of the door again as though anxious Renee get here quickly. He closed it, rubbing the back of his neck. "Do you want to be alone?"

Chenglei stared at him, taking a quick intake of air and holding it. Then he curled up into a ball, hiding his face that twisted into despair with his crossed arms. ".....I'm..." He muttered, his shaky hands turning into fists. "...I'm sorry...guess I'm not fit tuh be ya guard...not when ya dun trust meh...."He laughed bitterly. "Not dat I dun blame ya...after wut I couldn' do...tuh save ya..."

Kenren looked confused. "I trust you, Chenglei, maybe not as much as before, but we talked, remember? I said, okay, and I didn't say this, but that meant I put my hope in you again. I didn't ask you to step down from your position either, that was just because I thought maybe it's too cold or heartless a place for you. I know you're kind, and I'm sitting her because I thought you didn't like me near you."

He thought awhile. "I know I yelled," he began. "Is that why you've been depressed?"

Chenglei shook his head, peeking out from his arm, dull eyes searching for something. An answer maybe? "So da offas for breaks and lettin' meh know about da position bein' open was just ya tryin' tah get me comfortable?" He sounded so confused and helpless. The blonde blinked, gulping like he was almost scared. "Ya...ya dun hate meh? o-or regret meetin' meh?"

And that little voice that sounded way similar to Renee's just echoed: 'That stupid fat lizard tried to manipulate him too by using your image saying 'I hate you!' Is that what's bothering him?

Kenren gaped. His look of confusion became that of incredulity. "Of course not! How could I regret meeting you, Chenglei? I never would've gotten where I am without you. I was really mad, but I don't hate you."

He stood up and sat on the recliner. " I was trying to take care of you, you had eye bags, you weren't eating as much, so I thought a break would get you right back up."

"I thought ya were pushin' me away tuh get away from ya...by givin' meh breaks..." Chenglei mumbled as he hid his face again. "I thought ya didn't believe meh when I said I want tuh stay so I trained harder an' didn't want tuh mess up again..."

"I wanted to show ya dat I was serious by callin' ya 'sir' all the time...until ya told me dat I can call ya 'Ken'en' again..." There was a hitch in his voice.

Kenren chuckled, amused and mildly exasperated. "So that's why. I thought you were calling me sir because you wanted our relationship to be professional and not as . . . people who care about each other." he looked up at him, kindly. "I wasn't pushing you away, Chenglei, far from it. I was trying to get close, I told you jokes just so that you could be more comfortable with me. I want you to stay, and you can call me Kenren. None of this sir nonsense when we're alone." he snorted. "Makes me feel like we're strangers who know each other too well."

The prince rubbed his own shoulder subconsciously, then smiled at the swordsman. "Was my clock joke that bad, or do you want seconds?"

Kenren could hear Chenglei's soft laughter before it hitched. His shoulders shook from laughing, looking up at the prince. There, on his pale face, was a genuine bright smile; his teary eyes are not dull anymore; mirth and relief was glittering in them.

"Se-secon's please....Ku-! Kufufufu-!" Then there was a loud growling sound. Chenglei blushed in embarrassment, placing his hands on top of his stomach. "...um..."

The prince smiled as all of a sudden, with Chenglei's laughter, he felt the room was more cheerful and bright. He gestured at the fruits and crackers on the bedside table. "Hungry? What do you want to eat? I'll be the one taking care of you tonight."

Chenglei's blush just spread across his face and to the tops of his ears, shy and humbled. His curled up form relaxed as he looked over the table to see the fruits and crackers. "D-Do ya have pomegranates and peaches?"

Beyond the door, which was opened silently, a curious ferret sniffed, peeking in the room before looking at his summoner. He wiggled his nose and tilted his head as if to ask her 'if this is really okay?'

Renee smiled at Mica and nodded, crouching down to gently grab her friend and walk away from the recovering couple. "They'll be fine now...I'm sure..."

Back in the room, Chenglei bit into the succulent peach and hummed happily before looking at the Prince shyly. "Oh...um...Ken'en?"

"Yes?" said the prince, wringing the wet towel and patting Chenglei's forehead. The feel of his mechanical hand was different, as though it was made of wood wrapped in velvet.

Chenglei sighed from the cooling sensation from the wet towel and the new feel from his mechanical hand, closing his eyes for a bit to enjoy it. Then he lightly, gently held Kenren's hand to bring it down to his lips and he kissed his knuckles. Dazed ash purple eyes gazed up at the prince to see his reaction. "Thank ya...for caring about meh..."

Kenren's breath was caught in his throat. "N-no problem." he said distractedly, holding Chenglei's hand. His eyes glanced down at the swordsman's lips. Carefully, looking into his eyes, the prince cupped his cheek and leaned close.

Chenglei pressed his other hand against Kenren's meaningfully, while lightly squeezing the other. Looking back into his eyes, he smiled humbly before leaning in timidly. Petal soft lips meet with the Prince's and Chenglei hummed quietly, half-lidded eyes were dazed but filled with an emotion that Kenren have seen before countless of times...Love.

That sparked an old flame that had just been waiting patiently all these years inside Kenren's soul. The fire that burned stronger so many times than his desire to unite all of the Orients, seeing Chenglei happy and longing to be loved by him.

Gods above how he missed his loving kisses. Kenren's fingers brushed the swordsman's skin with every button he undid, as the bed creaked with both of their weight. Chenglei could tell it was going to be his night, as the prince pushed him under the covers and passionately pleasured him just the way the swordsman liked it.

Oh, Buddha knows how Chenglei missed Kenren's passionate kisses-! The blonde arched his back from those touches, wrapping his arms around his neck and shoulders as he was pushed down. That night he would tease his lover, making sure he knows that he missed him despite being so close all the time.

In the next morning, Kenren would see Chenglei sleeping soundly, still a bit feverish but he didn't have a nightmare; not even a whimper from bad thoughts past those lips. Just soft mumbling that sounded like his name and a sigh as he snuggled onto his chest, one leg over Kenren's.

Later on in the day, Kenren would hear a knocking sound and Renee's voice, asking if she can check on Chenglei.

Kenren encouraged that leg around his waist to feel that nice salad. His jalapeno was so happy to be unfettered. It was so cozy this morning, he thought as he parted Chenglei's golden locks and planted a gentle good morning kiss on his forehead. He hugged him tight, feeling joyful. "Morning, Chenglei." he whispered.

Later that day, when Renee knocked, the prince's voice answered hastily, "Ch-Chenglei's --- oh --- busy a-ah at the moment, Renee! He --- oh, Chenglei, "he whispered, groaning as quietly as he could," --- is fine! F-fever went down!"
