Mermaid Love

He looked odwn and he nodded. When he heard her, he floated her up to the surface and pushed her out, "There, but don't tell them anything." He quickly began to chitter again.

Stephanie turned around and looked at the merman. "Thank you, Gillian." She flopped down onto the cement that surrounded her. "It's been a long day." She told them. "Time to pack it in for today." She started turning everything off. "Thank you." She waved goodnight to Gillian.

Gillian slowly laid down on the bottom of the tank, sighing slightly. He groaned and uncomfortably laid onto the bottom of the hard glass.

The next morning, Stephanie came in early with a grin on her face. "Hey, Gillian!" She immediately began putting on her wetsuit. "Are you ready for me?" She didn't have flippers on, but was wiggling her toes in the water.

Gillian gave a discreet nod, floating up so he was just under the water. He could breathe air if he absolutely had to, yet he was much, much more comfortable in water.

"Say, can you talk above water?" She could see him just in front of her. Stephanie thought she was making great progress with Gillian. "Or is it just below water? Do you...do you like me?" It was weird to ask, but the hugging and crying out to her made her ask. "Are you happy with me coming into the tank with you?"

He nodded, "I can if I want to. It just... breathing air is like you breathing air on the top of a mountain. It's a really hard thing to adjust to." When she asked her strange question, he blushed and looked down, "I was just scared, alright? And yeah, you can come on in."

Stephanie knew it. This was just another assignment. "Okay, I'm coming." She went under with him. "I understand." Why was she getting so emotional? This was a fish! "So, what games do you play? Obviously, between me and you, you have the advantage."

"Games...? I haven't played many games since.. I was the equivalent of a child." He smiled and drifted around, "I could show you one if you want."

Stephanie grinned. "Gillian, that would be splendid." She told him while swimming after him. "I want to see you smile anyway." This would be great! He was finally going to be happy during his stay!

Gillian nodded and he pressed himself against the back of the tank and began whipping his tail around. It created a srong current that was pushing her away from him. He smirked, "Now try to swim up the current! You win when you touch my tail!"

Stephanie laughed at this. "You're more mischievous than I originally thought." She started swimming, fighting with the current. Every time she would get close to touching Gillian's tail, the current would push her back. "You're not being fair." Rivera was laughing.

Gillian smiled and he giggled, flipping his tail hard and sending a smaller, more forecful wave against her, which pushed her all the way back to the other end of the tank. He laughed, "I used to do this with my friends quite often."

"You did?" Stephanie could only imagine the torment his friends went through. "Well, that's why you do this then? They get a kick out of it?" Her breath was coming out in gasps. The owner of the center came in. "Dr. Rivera, what are you doing? Did you even feed our other friends?" Rivera gave Gillian a smile before swimming up. "No, I didn't. Sorry. I'll get on that right now." She climbed out of the tank and went into the kitchen.

Gillian blinked a little bit and began to think about what to say. He sighed and sat down, rubbing his eyes and drfiting off into a little doze.

She came out of the kitchen after a very long time. Making her rounds, she fed each and every animal their medicated foods. All the while, she was watching Gillian from time to time. It was almost time for him to leave...and for her to go back and never see her friend again. "Hey, Gillian." She spoke from outside the water. "Y-You're gonna be able to leave soon." She didn't want him to see her crying.

((My idea was a higher science decision decides to hold him permanently for study and she ends up getting fed up with constant experiments))

Gillian flew up to the glass and he gave a cry of joy, flipping in am a circles in the water. He looked at her, "thank you so much, thank you thank you!"

((Oh! Okay.))

Gillian's joyous antics made Stephanie want to cry. "Gillian, I meant that you'll see home again. I don't know when. It could be tonight, next week, next year or ten years from now, but it's actually not my call whether or not you go home."

Gillian froze in the water and he bilnked a little, then he floated to the top and he blinked before he started to slowly look destroyed. His face fell and he started to chirp gain, then made a fist and hit the glass so hard that it vibrated on the outside. HE cringed as some blood floated to the top from his cracked knuckel, "THAT'S NOT FAIR!!!"

"Gillian, please don't do that!" She jumped back into his tank without any equipment on. She took him in her arms and wept. Please, I hate to see you so hurt. You're my friend. Honestly, if I put you in with the sharks, you'd be dead. She took his hand and kissed it, slowly losing oxygen. She dragged him to the surface and heaved as she breathed. "Gillian, you're hurt."

Gillian gave a gasp and he looked up, coughing hard as he realized everything was going wrong. He looked down and he curled up, still crying and then swam to the bottom, hurt by her words and curling up on the floor, pouting hard.

Stephanie didn't like the silent treatment from him. "I'm so sorry." She started crying, knowing that she had lost her friend. Her superiors were in the office, talking about certain experiments. That made her feel uncomfortable.

He looked down and he curled up, not daring to look her in the eye. He was never going to go home. These creatures wanted to keep him until he died. HE was little more than a science experiment.

"Gillian, please...." she pressed her hands to the glass, looking down at the floor and sobbing. "Please, don't do this." She begged, looking up at last. "I don't want to lose you as my friend."
