Mermaid Love

"I see." She reached forward, wanting to actually make contact with him. "Tell me something, Gillian. Are...you scared of me?" She placed her hand on his shoulder. "You know I won't hurt you."

Gillian nodded, shivering a little bit in fear. He moved away but kept their eyes matched. He gulped nervously, "A-a-are you okay?" He asked, looing around. The whirl of a machine caused him to flip around in the water, thrashing in fear.

"I'm alright." She held Gillian's hands. "Take it easy. That's just the tank cleaner. It'll do that sometimes." She hugged him a little. "I know you need a friend. I'm willing to be one to you."

Gillian looked inot her eyes and he slowly began to relax. He goraned slightly, rubbing his eyes a bit and groaning. Sighing while the machines turned off, he looked down, "Why do you keep me here?"

"This is a marine rescue facility." She murmured. "My colleagues and I study every ocean species and rehabilitate those that need helping. Then, we put them back." She explained, backing off. "I know you hate me, but I don't want you to feel sad or angry."

"Do you promise that you'll let me go?" He asked, shivering and looking down, sighing a little bit. He grunted as a small stream of bubbles hit his tail. It felt strange, as though this was completely wrong. He hated this tank.

Stephanie looked toward the bottom of the tank. "Gillian, I..." She hated seeing him hate her. "Gillian, I promise that I'll do my best to make you happy." She hugged him again, then her head became lighter, but her equipment got heavier. "I-I have to go!" She struggled to get to the top before she could pass out.

He groaned a ltitle bit and sighed, rubbing his eyes and sinking to the bottom, laying on it and rubbing his eyes, sighing and looking like he was about to cry.

Stephanie gasped as soon as she reached the top. "Oh my god!" She climbed from the tank. "I lost track of time." "You were hugging him." The other scientist told her, to which Stephanie nodded. "I know. I think he needed it."

He looked out at the tank, then he saw one of them start to slowly hold some devices. He blinked rapidly, shivering violently. He shivered again and he chittered, flying to the other side of the tank. When one seemed to be poking the water with something, he began to thrash.

Stephanie walked over to a pool and splashed the water a dolphin swam up to her and she blew on her whistle twice. The dolphin swam away and brought back a big red rubber ball. Stephanie took that ball and threw it in Gillian's tank.

Gillian slowly swam up, wary of the people who were moving around his tank, taking flashes and doing other things to the water. He took the ball and then threw it back out int othe tank with the dolphin.

Stephanie shook her head. "Come on..." she wouldn't call him by name in front of everyone. "I'm trying to be nice, kid." She took a handmade toy, two bottles tied together with a string, and gave that to Gillian instead. "Please work with me."

Gillian blinked at it and tried to think of what to do with it. He took it and began to twirl it around slightly, smiling a little bit to try and help her. He tried to think of what to do with the odd contraption.

"Well, it worked on the orca." She laughed at how different the two creatures were. "What are we going to call him?" A different scientist asked. "This might sound crazy," Stephanie spoke. "But, I like 'Gillian'." She giggled. "It's cute and it makes sense."

He blinked and he tossed it back out, chittering. He was basically saying 'I don't know what you're trying to get me to do!' He swam to the side as one of them put something on the side of the glass. He froze nad began to swim backwards.

Stephanie looked nervous. "You're scaring him!" She had to get back in the tank with Gillian as soon as possible. "Gillian, calm down." She climbed the ladder on the side and jumped back into the water, oxygen tank and all. "Gillian, please come here. It's alright.I'm right here." Her instincts were telling her that he needed a sister, a mother, a friend of some sort. Stephanie wanted to be that person. "Gillian, please." She swam toward him and embraced him, scales, tail and all.

Gillian slowly looked at her and suddenly he couldn't take it anymore. He grabbed her and hugged her tightly, shutting his eyes and chittering. He whimpered, "I don't know what you wan't me to do~! They're trying to mess with my water!" He pointed as they were messing with the water pressure.

"Oh, well, before, when I had that ball, well, I don't know what merpeople like, so I wanted you to play with that ball." She squeezed him tightly. "They're just trying to make you as comfortable as possible. The only other way to do this is to take you out of the water until it's done." Rivera ran her hands through his hair. "Gillian, I'm right here. They won't hurt you." She cooed softly. "You're alright."

He looked at the side of the tank and he whimpered, hugging her tightly, "I'm just worried... I awnt to go home." He whimpered, sighing slightly and rubbing his eyes as the water began to feel straneg to him.

"I know." Stephanie knew that Gillian wanted his family. "I promise that as soon as we get enough information, you're going home. There might be a GPS receiver of some sort attached to your tail, but that's only to keep track of you." Stephanie wouldn't admit it out loud, but she would definitely enjoy seeing Gillian again, in his element. "You're going to be fine." Stephanie would make sure of that.

Gillian looked down and he hugged her even tighter, scared out of his mind at this point. HE tried to keep calm, whispering a little bit so that she coudln't hear him.

Stephanie rubbed his back and started humming. When she was done, she spoke again. "Gillian, how would you like to be in a show for the kids?" She knew that the kids loved learning about the ocean. "We have kids come by every Friday to learn."

Gillian blinked rapidly and he shivered, "I-I don't know... I-I might... what if they tell other people, and those people start... start to try to keep me here longer?!" He whimpered and shivered hard.

Stephanie considered that. "You're right. What we do here is rehabilitate animals, then put them back and we make that very, very clear. What we do is allow the public to see us put them back and that way the people know that the animal isn't coming back." She sighed. "I am so exhausted right now."
