Marvel/Daredevil Roleplay

Maddie shoved a fifty in the cabbie's face and ordered "Follow the cop." The cabbie complied.

In about 20 minutes they arrived at a dock. Maddie got out and the cabbie quickly drove away, as if afraid of the place. It was creepy.

It was pitch black out by now and the only lights were the orange fluorescent ones. Maddie heard the cop saying something frantically on a cell phone, and sensed that something was wrong for him too.

"No, man I'm in uniform! I shouldn't be out here like this....yeah, yeah, I'll keep an eye out. But you owe me big. Jones is gonna have your ass when he hears.....what? What do you mean, a hang up? Aw F***!" Evans kicked the dash of his car. "I don't have any backup, how the-" Evans was cut off by the sound of cars pulling up beside him. "Nevermind, they just showed up. You better hope he doesn't find out....yeah yeah." Evans ended the call. Maddie crept around a huge metal storage container to see who the men were and what was going on. As she peeked, she saw several guys with varying degrees of weaponry get out of 4 black SUVs. Maddie got goosebumps. This was definitely not good.

That was when the van showed up.

It was a white 12-passenger van, the kind churches and small school groups used for field trips. The back two doors opened, and Maddie saw two more guys with guns drag four girls out by their hair. The girls were screaming and crying, clearly terrified. All would have looked young and beautiful had it not been for the sheer terror on their faces. Maddie had to take a few deep breaths in order not to scream with them, the fear was so thick rolling off of them in waves.

"Why so much backup?" Evans asked the guys. "QUIET!" One of the men screamed at the girls, threatening them with a taser before shoving them in a metal storage container. A couple of the guys trained guns on them so they wouldn't get out. The man that had screamed turned back to Evans. "That A**hole in the mask has been causing us problems lately, and since this is one of our most lucrative investments we decided to be extra careful this time. We just wanted you to make sure the place was clear. Plus, since you're in uniform, no one asks questions. You can go now if you want." Loud Guy explained.

Evans nodded, looking slightly sick and getting into his cop car. As he did, one of the gunmen asked "Hey where's-" but was interrupted with a loud SLAM as a body hit the roof of Officer Evans' car. Maddie nearly screamed, as the car was right next to her storage container, but clapped a hand over her own mouth. She glanced over to see what Sable was going, immediately guilty for allowing her to come to such a dangerous place.

Watching the officer speak on the phone peaked Sable's interest. He didn't sound like some one who was abiding the law. As other vehicles pulled up, her heart rate imcreased as she watched the mysterious and surely dangerous men exit and walk over to the van. Sable's breath became so still, all she could hear was her own heart beat. She didn't move.

Instantly her curiosity turned to hatred and anger as she sound the innocent toung women be taken out of the back of the van. Bound and gagged, they screamed and cried for help. Nothing... Nothing upset Sable more than this. Anger rose within her as she had learned from a young age what men like this were like, what they wanted, and she was livid.

Silently, she vanished from Maddie's side before Maddie even turned to look at her and snuck around behind spme box cars, tracking the men with her eyes. She delighted in how much she wanted every man involved dead, 'pick on someone who is weaker than you' she thought spitefully as she climbed on top of a box car, 'let's see how you like it.' She yanked her arm side ways, a dark, black light glowing around her hands that near impossible to see in the dark. This caused a box car to fall over on two men, crushing them to death instantly. There were three left. She focused on the crates, sending them flying at the other men, the ones holding guns.

The two men were crushed by the box that fell over on them, but seeing and hearing the loud commotion, the other three scattered before they could be hit. The girls shrank to the back of their car. Maddie watched in horror as more lives were lost- and Sable was nowhere to be found. She guessed the girl was responsible. She could feel the girl's hatred and anger.

Then the devil showed up. He appeared behind the three men who had just dodge the container, almost like smoke. Maggie watched in awe as he kicked the living crap out of each of them, careful not to use deadly force but instead choosing to knock them all out on the ground. Officer Evans was scrambling to get out of his car and run, and the man in the mask almost didn't see him but Maggie ran around the container and kicked him in the gut with a swift ounch in the face to get him on the ground. The man in the mask ran over to where she was and said "I'll take it from here," slamming the man against another container. He was out cold, and Devil let him slide to the ground. He finally stopped and listened for any remaining heartbeats. He could hear the girls in the container and two more, Maddie's and Sable's.

He turned to Maddie, "What are you doing here?" he asked in a concerned tone. "That cop was interviewing one of my patients. Things went wrong, I followed to see what was going on because something didn't feel right..." Maddie trailed off and shrugged. Matt almost smiled at her voice. It was his childhood friend, Maci Maddison. He hoped she didn't recognize him. ((He doesn't know she's a mutant, she kept it a secret all these years.))

But Maddie did. Maddie would recognize her best friend's feelings everywhere. He had a characteristic thirst for justice, love of his city, and downright stubbornness that Maddie could recognize instantly, no matter the situation. However Maddie was in disbelief. How could he have gotten these Martial Arts abilities? Her Matt was blind! He wouldn't run around in a vigilante mask, beating up bad men.....would he? Maddie stared at the man, pondering.

"You can come out now." Devil called to whoever was hiding. He knew it wasn't one of the girls in the container, the door was almost shut on it and this girl's heartbeat was very distinctive. Was it that mutant girl he had helped the other night?

((Okay here's the deal Maddie is gonna reveal him but I don't want her to do it in front of Sable because she's trying to protect Matt and help him, so I was hoping that we could have some Sable/Devil/Maddie interaction, then Sable leaves and Maddie reveals Matt so his identity is protected. We can bring Sable in on it later, but since she doesn't even know Matt Murdock yet I figured it wouldn't be much of a reveal. Since Maddie has known Matt all her life it's a big deal to her. That okay with you? I'm willing to listen if you have other plans.))

((Also sorry if it seems like I left you out of the fighting, but I was basically trying to set up a Maddie/Devil/Sable encounter with this, so it's not a huge plot event except for the fact that now you know the police are dirty. Well, some of them.))

((Np, take the lead))

Sable had been laying down on top of the box car, out of sight. She had always been good at disappearing. It was that man again, coming in to save the day! Who was he? How did he always know to come. Sable hated vigilantes almost as much as she hated cops, 'get real' she thought rolling her eyes.

When things settled, she listened to the masked man and Maddie talk. It was a familiar tone to their voices, almost like they knew one another. Sable wanted answers, she started to get up when she heard the masked man call,

"You can come out now"

What? How did he know she was there? Annoyed at gis omniscent qualities. She came out and approached, keeping her guard up, ready to fight or run at any second.

You killed those men." Matt stated to the girl. "They were bad men, and probably deserved to die. But you don't get to decide that. Next time, leave the beatings to me." He stated simply and calmly. "I don't want blood on anyone else's hands." He added so he wouldn't sound like an arrogant jerk.

"You should get out of here, before more men come. You can take one of these vehicles back to town." He motioned toward an SUV. Maddie stood there, arms crossed. She didn't want to leave yet. She had to know if this was her Matty.

Matt walked to the storage container the kidnapped girls were in. They ran to another SUV and drove off, in hysterics.

Matt turned back to Sable. "I don't know what your powers are but I really hope you use them for the right reasons. I wouldn't wanna cross paths with you. I don't like the idea of having to stop a child but I will if I have to." He told her. Maddie pressed her lips together. "Sable can you get home on your own?" She asked.

"Why don't mind your own goddamn business. Like you've never tortured someone to get info, or killed someone to save another. You're a fucking vigilante dude. Don't act all high and mighty now because what I hear from you isn't 'I'm a better person than you' it's 'I'm weak'." She didn't like this masked man. He seemed untrustworthy, she knew he was hiding something, there was more to him than meets the eye, and she was going to find out.

"Can you get home on your own?"

Sable turned and looked at Maddie smiling with much reluctance that was apparent on her face, "Yeah, I'm pretty used to being on my own. Kind of my thing. Good night, vigilante." She walked away from the two, untrusting of both, constantly glancing over her shoulder inconspicuously. Sable rather have people trying her like a kid than like an adult. She let people believe whatever they wanted as long as it would keep her free.

Matt chuckled as she walked away. "I would get mad but...she has a point." He shrugged. Maddie shook her head. "She's scared and angry. We all are. She had something to do with that bus incident-" "She tried to save the entire bus full of seniors. I saw it." Matt finished for her. Maddie looked impressed.

"You gonna take that mask off now or what?" Maddie asked. Matt pretended not to know what she was talking about. Suddenly, Maddie leaned forward and pulled it off. Matt scrambled for it, so she gave it back. "How did you know?!" He asked, genuinely surprised. "You're not the only one who recognizes voices, Matty." Maci replied. Matt smirked. "You're the first person to call me that since..." "Since your dad died? I figured." Maddie finished.

Maddie stared at him for a minute. "You have a lot of explaining to do. And we have a lot of catching up to do when you're not in a mask, but..." she hugged him fiercely, "...I missed you, Matthew." Matt smiled a little and hugged her back. He had always loved the way she smelled- like lavender and vanilla- but now it was tinged with antiseptic. He wondered what she did in the hospital.

When Maddie stepped back, she realized she had blood spots on her scrubs. When she realized they were from cuts on Matt she gasped. "Damn, Matt what the hell! You're covered in blood!" "I am? Ah, well, situation normal then." He smiled a tad. "I'm assuming you don't wanna come to the hospital?" Maddie replied, crossing her arms. Matt just shook his head. "Fine, then I'll go and grab my bag and meet you somewhere. Any preference?" "My place," Matt replied, giving her the address, "Be careful. If anyone knows you were with me it will put you in danger. I mean it, Maddie." He warned. Maddie nodded.

((So we can do a timeskip now, or we can keep going separately, or whatever. Preferences?))

((Also, I'm trying to think of a way to let Sable and your explosive mutant guy meet Matt so everyone knows everyone, and we need to bring in Foggy and Karen too, since they're kinda important in the series. I was thinking Sable needs a lawyer or something so she finds Nelson and Murdock because they don't charge as much as most of the lawyers and they're small. And they tend to help regular people on the street instead of big corporate jerks. But I'm not sure why she would need a lawyer. I thought it could have something to do with combustion dude, but not sure what. OOH I HAVE AN IDEA so in the series, Foggy and Matt get tips on clients who need help from kind, upstanding police officers! So if they were friends with your combustion mutant, that would bring them together, and then Sable could tag along or...Idk something. lol Ideas?))

Sable made her way home, calling a cab and riding back through the city. As she passed the landscape or cement, metal, and asphalt, she watched the alley ways and street corners. This was her playground, her intricate bird cage. Sighing, Sable leaned back in her seat, staring at the cab driver's eyes through the rear view mirror. Feeling her gaze, her glanced back, his dull eyes meeting her round, large lidded hazel eyes. She turned away slowly, looking out the right window, "Here's good,"

Once the cab pulled over. Sable pulled some 20s out of her pocket, handing it to the cab driver. He pulled away without another word before walking down into the alley. She was in street rat territory. It was known for that by the other gangs on the streets and the police. Others didn't go here. There were very little residential houses, most the buildings were old offices and factories. This gave them a good amount of training ground as did their underground system. As much territory as they had above ground on the streets of Hell's Kitchen, they had just as much below it.

Sable made her way underground to the area she usually stayed in. As she entered the perimeter, one of the gang's guards came out to see who was infringing on the territory. A smirk spread across his face when he saw it was Sable, "Well well well!" he spoke up, "Boss has been lookin for ya."

"Shut up, Vinnie." Sable walked by.

"Guess he needs his number one girl for a fun time." Vinnie laughed, signalling back to the other guys who were smoking around the corner. They joined in with laughter.

Sable ripped the cigarette from his mouth and turned it on him, burning his cheek as she walked down the cast iron stairs and through the door into the underground world of the mutant street rats. She was on a mission, furious with Piper, she wanted to have a little discussion. Making her way to his office she made he way in without a knock, seeing many of his usual right hand men inside with him. The office of Piper was a large, extravagant place, an urban underground hangout for all of the most "important" members of the gang.

Piper put down his cigar and stood up when Sable went in, raising his drink into the air, "Sable!" He approached her where she stood near the doorway. The door swinging to a close, "That's my girl! You made it back!" he put his arms around her.

Sable pushed him off roughly.

"Woah woah woah, Angel, Angel. What's wrong? I was never gonna leave you in the hospital, I knew you were tougher than that. Besides, I am sure you'd like to know I had that bastard killed who shot you. In your honor and all. He was just a grunt." He went to put the cigar back in his mouth for another puff and Sable smacked it roughly out of his hand,

"You never said that the Crows were using retirement community as hide outs! Do you know how many innocent people almost died. Those were people's grandparents, siblings, parents... even nurses were in there, young... like 19 or 20! You want to stay quiet, you want police to just keep acting like we don't exist so we can take care of our business. Don't involve innocent civilians!" Sable yelled.

Piper raised his eyebrows, "Sable, Ryder got the money and got out, it's fine. I got your cut right here. Don't you want it?"

Sable crossed her arms, blowing her hair out of her face with a frustrated huff, "Yeah."

"Well alright, buy yourself something nice. Some new clothes, get your hair dyed or something." he tossed her a large stack of cash. It was thousands of dollars.

Catching it in her hand, Sable grinned, "See... this is what we're supposed to be about. We protect the outcasts, we take money from the corrupt, we give to ourselves and to others. We take care of those that society wishes to just forget about."

The men in the room laughed. Surely they were all out for themselves, "Nooo. You do that. You steal me money, I give it to you and you choose whether or not you want to redistribute it. I never started this organization to be a fundraiser for charities. I ain't no philanthropist. But you balance me out, and that's why you're my girl." he touched her face gently with the back of his hand.

Sable smacked his hand away roughly, "I am not your girl!" she snapped.

"Suit yourself..." he went back to his seat, winking at Sable.

"Think first next time you want me involved in a plan. I won't have any part in this kind of shit."

"Oh really?" Piper put out his cigar, "I'll keep that in mind"

Maddie went back to the hospital and got her bag of medical supplies. When she arrived at the apartment, Matt opened the door for her. "I don't have any anesthetic, I couldn't sneak any." Was Maddie's greeting as she walked in and sat on his couch. She glanced around. "Nice place." She said sarcastically. Matt shrugged. "I got it cheap and I don't have to look at it so..." He trailed off. Maddie chuckled "So you wanna explain to me how a blind guy goes around town kicking ass and taking names?" She got out bandages and stitches as Matt got a chair and sat down in it, taking off his shirt.

"....and how the hell you got so buff?" Maddie added, staring at him and glad he couldn't see her blush. Matt heard her heart rate speed up and chuckled. "The answer is similar." He proceeded to tell her about the incident giving him abilities, and training with Stick, though he left the man's name out to keep him safe. Maddie knew who it was immediately though. Matt's description of the events that happened during his training were too much like her childhood for her not to realize who he was talking about. But she kept quiet anyway. He told her about college with Foggy and starting his own law firm with his friend, and about his first few cases as a lawyer including the one with Karen, who was now their secretary. When he had finished, Maddie was finishing some stitches.

She stared at Matt. "That's incredible. But you gotta be more careful. I counted 12 cuts, 8 needed stitches. You need a better suit or something. Some protection." She told him. Matt nodded "I know. I'm looking into it. Until then I have you to patch me up." He grinned. "That'll be $500" she deadpanned, holding out her hand. Matt put a hand to his chest "You're killing me!" "No, you're doing a good job of that all by yourself." Maddie retorted. Matt's face fell. "I'm being careful, Maddie. Promise." "Yeah you'd better be." Maddie grumbled.

"These men need to be put away. You remember the story about the little boy who watched his dad get pulled out of their van and beaten and then got kidnapped by the guys who did it?" Matt asked. Maddie nodded. "I returned him to his dad tonight." Matt told her. Maddie smiled. "Well hot damn. We got a savior on our hands." She chuckled. "Savior or not. I know this city needs you, but your friends need you too. Foggy and Karen sound like great people and I only just found you again. Don't make me go without my Matty." She pinched his cheek jokingly. Matt swatted her hand away, laughing. "I won't." He promised.

"You're taking this surprisingly well, I must say." Matt added. "I kind of expected more....explosion. Anger, irritation, that sort of thing." Maddie pretended to scoff. "I am a very calm, serene, kind young lady and you're treating me like I'm some sort of over-reactive mental patient!" she teased. Maddie had always been a reactionist. Matt laughed and nodded, "Alright alright I get it. Still." He gestured at her. Maddie looked away and muttered, "You're not the only one with secrets, Murdock. I'm just glad you're alive, and willing to share yours."

"Well you kinda figured it out on your own. In a perfect world, you wouldn't know, and still be safe. But I figure you can take care of yourself, and if you ever need me, all you have to do is yell. Literally. I can hear you." Matt chuckled. Maddie laughed and shook her head at him.

Matt wondered what she meant by 'everyone has secrets' but decided to leave it alone. He didn't want to push his old friend away by being a busy body. Maddie kept silent, determined to keep her abilities a secret for as long as she could. She was worried Matt would see her as a freak. Or worse, as a threat. She had nothing to do with Piper the street rat mutant king, but a lot of mutants were getting a bad rap because of it. She decided it was best not to say anything.

((Okay. Morning, afternoon? Does it matter? If you have an event in mind, go ahead and do the skip and I'll reply.))

Two weeks later....

It was about 7pm, and Maddie was about to meet Foggy and Karen for the first time. She had been busy for the last couple weeks with work, but it had slowed down enough that Maddie felt comfortable taking a few days off, and just having a good time with Matt. She waited at Josie's at the bar. Suddenly, Matt walked in with Foggy and Karen.

Foggy immediately face-palmed. Gesturing to Maddie, he turned to look at Matt and practically yelled, "You did it again! You have hot girl radar!" Matt laughed, "Look I've known her since before she was hot, okay? Not my fault this time." "Yes it is, it's always your fault. My life sucks." Foggy retorted. Maddie laughed through the whole thing, though the fact that two guys had just called her hot at the same time did not escape her. "You must be the Nelson half of Nelson and Murdock. I'm Maddie." She said to Foggy, extending her hand. Foggy grinned, taking it, and pointing out, "You two have the same nickname!" He cheered. Matt groaned a little. "His dad used to call us Maddy Squared." Maddie replied, egging Foggy on. Matt knew all along that they would hit it off.

Karen stepped forward, "My name's Karen, and I'm the idiot that works for these dorks." She said with a grin. Maddie laughed. "I feel for you. Matt was a nerd even in his younger days. I see he hasn't grown out of it at all." Karen shook her head, "Not one bit." They all sat down at the bar together and ordered drinks.

((I figured this could be the evening that a bunch of explosions happens. You didn't get to that part in the series, I bet but I'll keep going once you've established where your character is.))

((So here's what's going to happen. They are going to steal some corrupt government official's money from this warehouse he keeps his riches in. He has been laundering money and stealing it from investors for a long time, but it is going to be a set up, and Ryder is going to abandon her there getting the cops called on her, and then resulting in her and the official needing a lawyer, taking out two birds with one stone))

Bernard Wright was a wealthy business man and commonly known player on wall street. He was known for his insatiable greed, viciousness in business, and ability to make a profit on anything. However, Wright was so wealthy, he had the police department in his hand, providing funds to them and others to keep quiet about the illegal ways he obtained his money and the many investors he stole money from. He evaded taxes constantly and took company money as his own.

In the last couple of weeks, the tension in Piper and Sable's relationship had grown. Sable had found out Piper was planning a gang war between the Crows who were invading the Street Rats' Territory. Sable disagreed, saying it wasn't a smart idea and that it wasn't their place to get involved in such trivial matters. However, Piper disagreed. He could see without the Crows around bringing in drugs and drug money as well as their illegal gambling circuits that often took a lot of money from the Street Rats, there would be a lot to gain. He was tired with them shooting his people (Sable), taking his money, and trying to steal his mutant kids. There was only room for one king of the mutant street rats... just one. To increase his connections, Piper reached out to the biggest, baddest group he knew of currently active in the area, the traffickers. In return for the traffickers support, the Street Rats would help them get rid of the masked man. It was a deal.

When Sable heard that Piper had made a deal with the traffickers, and that they'd be working together, she was furious. Immediately Sable went to Piper and threatened to leave if he went through with this. She refused to be in any sort of cahoots with them. Piper at first ignored her, not taking her very seriously. He had her watched. She began withdrawing her money and taking appropriate steps to running away from the gang. Piper was not going to let his girl go that easily. No one leaves the street rats... No one left the street rats! Especially someone who had as much knowledge about the gang as she had. Still, he couldn't bring himself to do it. He couldn't bring himself to kill his Angel. He went to Sable to apologize, saying that while to him, the vigilante aspect of their gang didn't matter, he understood how it did to her, and he was going to send her on a mission where she could fulfill that mission.

~~~x~~~
The night was young as Sable and Ryder waited out by the warehouse, watching as Bernard Wright stopped by after work as usual, to look at his treasure and insure it's safety and security. The two were laying on a near by roof, Sable was eating a chicken sandwich from Wendy's as she leaned back against a chimney shoot. She glanced over at Ryder as she ate, shaking her head. His eyes were still glued to the binoculars, watching obsessively, "Dude, calm down. He's been in there until about 8pm every night. It's only 7:20... we need to wait a good 30 minutes after he leaves to ensure he's really gone."
"I know," Ryder responded, "I'm just a little edgy right now."
Sable froze in mid chew, swallowing that bite and dropping the remaining half on her sandwich on the white paper bag, "You best cut that shit out. I need you at your best man. What other techy out there will I rely on to enter the main frame and disarm his security, huh? "
"Yeah... I'm fine, don't worry." Ryder replied.
"Something doesn't feel right." Sable responded.
"What do you mean?" Ryder asked.
Giving a quick shrug, Sable answered, "I don't know, man. Just, I don't trust him ya know? Why would he give me a mission like this after saying all that shit about how this organization isn't a charity case. And with us knowing he's going to war with Crows... It just feel too much like old times to be real. Ya know, with everything else going on and whatever."
"Yeah. It is a bit weird," Ryder admitted, "Maybe he is just using you to get the money, and then when you're done he is going to take your share. Say you owe it to him somehow. You know how he is."
"Yeah..." Sable said suspiciously as she glanced at Ryder, "I do."
((This is a good idea, but just for consistency's sake can we say Bernard works for Fisk? He's like...the king of all crime in Hell's Kitchen. That's why Matt wants to take him down so badly, because without him there, most of the crime and corruption in the city will be gone. People will lose their funding and whatnot.))
Maddie, Matt, Foggy and Karen were having a good time. Matt didn't drink very much at all, he wanted to stay in the best shape for tonight. He had heard whispers of something going down, and he wanted to know what it was about. At around 8pm the gang split up. "Look guys, I gotta go home and shower and get some rest. I didn't sleep at all last night. Not trying to be a wimp or anything." Maddie told them with a yawn. Matt smiled. "I'll walk you home. Foggy, Karen, I'll see you two at work tomorrow." He said, getting up and walking out behind Maddie. Foggy and Karen said bye and waved to Maddie. They were used to having each other as drinking partners.
"So...Maddie....I think-" "That Matt's totally in love with her? Me too." Foggy interrupted with a grin. Karen looked a little surprised and hurt. "That wasn't what I was gonna say.....but do you think so? I mean, you've known him longer than I have." She replied, hiding her jealousy well. "I mean....I don't know it's hard to tell with him, because he's always so smooth with the ladies...but something seems different with Maddie." Foggy replied with a shrug. Karen nodded slowly and took another swig of her drink.
~~~~~

As Matt walked Maddie home they discussed the crime in the city. "So what do you think is happening?" Maddie asked, letting Matt take her elbow to get closer so they could have a quieter conversation without being overheard. "I don't really know. I just heard something about a warehouse and a guy I believe who works with Fisk." Matt frowned. "I intend to find out though." "Just be careful, okay?" Maddie said as they reached her front door. "I will. Sometimes I just watch to see if I'm needed. Sometimes the cops actually do their jobs and show up, and I'm not needed at all." He told her. "But usually you are because most of the cops are paid by Fisk in some way." Maddie finished for him. Matt chuckled, "You're catching on." Maddie shrugged. "I've lived her just as long as you have, Matt. I know how it works. Just don't get too banged up." she kissed him on the cheek ever so lightly and went inside. Before closing the door, she turned around and said, "Go get 'em, Murdock." Matt chuckled and turned to go home.

~~~~~
Matt arrived at the warehouse at approximately 8:10pm, perched on a nearby building and listening to what was going on. He could hear a couple people talking, on a stake out like he was. 'Interesting..' he thought. He wondered what they were going to do. He found out that the warehouse was basically storage for stolen and laundered money a week or two ago but he hadn't been able to track down who it was that it belonged to. He hoped he would find out tonight.
((My plan is to have him see the whole thing, know Sable was framed, and help her as a lawyer.))
((Sounds good. Don't get too much in the way though of the actual set up and the cops catching her)).
"And we're in," Ryder said with a smirk as he quickly put the tablet in his back pack.
"Everything has been disabled?" Sable asked as she grabbed her bag and leaned forward, ready to spring up.
With a nod, Ryder swung his backpack over his shoulders, "The doors are still locked, but the alarms are off, he won't even know anyone was there."
"So we need to go in through the roof fans, leave no trace." She walked to the edge of the building and tossed a thin, light mat onto the roof of the warehouse, "There's your landing pad," She said as she backed up slowly as she talked. Once she had achieved enough distance, Sable quickly entered a sprint with impressive speed. Giving a powerful stride and push, Sable leaped from the edge of the current building's roof. She landed on the warehouse roof with a soft, sound that no normal human ear would hear unless they had been on the roof next to where she landed. She got off, waiting for Ryder. Upon his landing, Ryder put the mat away, and the two began their mission.
Reaching one of the giant ceiling fans, Sable shook her head while looking at the monstrosity, "Why do I have to go in?"
"You're the only one small enough to squeeze through," Ryder said nervously, grabbing at his black shirt as he set up the scaling equipment.
Sable squinted at her partner. Her lip curled up as she tilted her head to the side, perplexed at her partner's weird behavior tonight. She didn't like it. She knew he was hiding something, "Ryder, what's going on with you tonight?"
Ryder paused when he heard the question. Sighing softly, he went right back to setting up the scaling equipment so he could lower Sable down to give her access to the warehouse, "I just... I have a lot going on in my head right now,"
Sable watched Ryder cautiously, "Do you know something I don't..."
"What?"
"Seriously... I am asking a serious question. Things between Piper and I have been... on edge lately, and suddenly he sends us on this mission, and you're all upset and distracted. What's going on?" Sable fished for potential problems that she figured would be likely, "Is Gwen okay? Is Piper still threatening to-" she trailed off, she didn't want to say it.
Ryder had a way out, something else to focus on, to blame his weird mood on, he could breathe a sigh of relief as he lied, "Yeah, he says she owes him. That he's being generous, that the apartment we live in isn't free, that my medical injuries I faced a few years back wasn't free and caused the cost of the doctors that work for the gang to increase..."
"So why did he give us this mission?"
"A chance to get out," Ryder said as he stood, "Let's get going."
Sable got herself hooked up to the rope and began her way down, squeezing tightly through the fan blades. Breathing a sigh of relief, she made her way down into the warehouse and immediately got to work. Having known where he kept the money by doing stakeouts and bribing those who also work for Fisk and Bernard Wright, Sable accessed her map on her smart watch device and hurried to the room. Once she located the room, she realized the room was empty. It was decorated like any other room, a table, a couch, a book case, plants, but something was off. Sable walked around the room, feeling the walls and knocking softly, "Perfect."
Having found a hollow wall, Sable immediately began looking around for a trigger or something to give her access. She couldn't find anything. Speaking into her ear piece she whispered sharply, "Ryder, I can't get in. Help me out here, is there some kind of code?"
Static rang in Sable's ear shortly before Ryder's response, "Yes, sorry. I can fix that, give me a second."
Sable waited, staring at the hollow wall. She heard a beep before hearing the sound of a machine moving something, but the wall still remained, "What's happening?" she whispered to herself as she felt all over the wall, "Nothing opened, did you get it?" She asked as she backed up and looked around the floor. Scuff marks leading from the legs of the couch and slightly forward and to the left of the couch, signified it had been pushed, many times. Feeling behind the couch, she realized the wall was gone, "He's going to make me crawl in isn't he?" she asked referring to Bernard Wright, "Great." She got off the couch, pushed it out of the way, and crawled in. Finally! Running forth she began grabbing the bags, as many as she could. She quickly made her way out, tying them to the rope and tugging for Ryder to pull them up.
Ryder's voice came through her ear piece, "Are there more?"
"Yes, about 12 more bags."
Ryder nodded, "Got it."
Sable went back and forth, getting about 4 bags each trip and securing them to the rope to be hoisted up. When Sable came with her final trip of bags, she made her to push the couch back and Ryder closed the door. As Sable secured herself and the bags, she tugged on the rope, ready to leave. She began to slowly rise into the air.
As the machine pulled her up, Ryder sat, listened to the rubbing sound. He knew what he was supposed to do, but he couldn't... him and Sable had been partners for years, she had been their for him, and him for her, he just couldn't do this to her. He remained seated, listened to her approach when Gwen flashed into his mind, 'I have to,' he thought. Getting to his feet, Ryder turned off the equipment and grabbed his knife and sawed at the rope.
"Ryder? What happened it stopped." Sable said into her earpiece. She heard no reply, "Ryder?" she called out. Looking up, she saw an incomprehensible scene. Ryder was bent over holding the rope in one hand, his arm moving back and forth in a sawing motion. He was trying to fix it... right? Of course, "Ryder? Ahhh!" Sable screamed quickly as she began to fall with the last few bags back down the floor. Falling 25 feet down, Sable flipped around like a cat and landed on her side, rolling as she hit. She felt her arm and ankle snap on impact, "Fuck!" she screamed out grabbing her arm. She rolled around on the ground, pain ringing in her head, clouding her thought, "Dammit..." she winced in pain as she struggled to sit up. Looking up, Ryder was no where to be seen, "Ryder!" she screamed. Using her earpiece she spoke, "Ryder." she waited... silence, "Ryder!" Nothing.
Suddenly, the fan turned on, spinning loudly and snapping the rope, the fan blades slicing it. The rope fell down onto her lap, tripping the alarms. Light began to flash as a high pitched whine rang, "Shit!" Sable got to her feet, realizing her ankle was broken. She fell back to the ground, "No! no no no no no" she got back up to her feet and pushed through the pain, limping away desperately, trying to find a place to go. She could hear police sirens in the background. She had to figure out how to get out. She got to the vent system and began to stack anything she could find in hopes of reaching it and climbing in.
Matt 'saw' and heard the whole thing. "Son of a bitch." He cursed. Clearly they were stealing from Wright's warehouse full of money. Not that that was his problem, he didn't care at all since Wright was in Fisk's pocket. He cursed some more when he realized the girl was being framed. He could hear her bones snap, thinking 'That's a job for Maddie.' but then most of the noise was drowned out by the fans. He heard her curse, but just barely. The fans were throwing him off.
Still, he jumped forward onto the roof. He couldn't help the girl now, couldn't move her safely or get into the building himself to get her out without messing up evidence. But he could catch the bastard who did this to her, and he sure as hell could help her as her lawyer.
Matt straightened and started jumping roofs. He was about two away, and made it to the roof of the warehouse fairly quickly, doing a roll and springing up again as the girl's partner was getting ready to run. Matt remembered the girl's name now-Sable- and he recognized this kid's face. He had been with her the last time Matt saw the girl doing 'business' in the city too. "Hey asshole, where you think you're going?' he growled, throwing a punch at the kid's face.
The blow came hard, knocking Ryder back. He staggered backwards, still holding the bags tightly in his hands. A trickle of blood ran down his chin. Dropping the bags down by side, the mutant spoke up in annoyance, "So what, you're one of Wright's stupid body guards then? Or are you one of Fisks'?" Ryder shook out his arms, "Alright, Is it a fight you want?" he got in a stance, preparing himself for a fight. Ryder was a mutant, and while his abilities rested mostly in technopathy, he also had increased healing and increased strength, resistance, and endurance. He wasn't the run of the mill grunt. Everyone knew how to fight and hold their own when they worked for Piper.
Sable struggled her way into the vents, crawling deeper and deeper in, she couldn't see a thing anymore. Finally she stopped moving when she heard the police inside the building. Even her breathing seemed to grow still and silent as she listened to the scuffing sounds of their footsteps. Closing her eyes slowly, she waited, hopeful she would be passed. She could wait in that vent forever.
((She is going to get caught))
((I figured.))
"I don't work for anyone. I protect this city, against scumbags like you and Piper." Matt growled as he threw a couple more punches followed by a kick. "Why are you framing that girl? I thought you were partners?" He attempted to grab Ryder by the collar of his shirt as he said this to interrogate him. Matt knew he couldn't save the girl from being caught, but perhaps he could beat some information out of Ryder that might be helpful when he was working on Sable's court case, which he was confident he would do. Because he wanted to see this through, and make sure that whatever else Sable may have done, she at least didn't get pinned with this. This operation smelled fishy to Matt, like a set up. There was no use in bringing down Sable when Matt could use the case to bring down someone bigger instead, like Wright or maybe even Piper if he was lucky. He somehow knew he wouldn't be able to trace it all back to Fisk, but if he could cut one of the other heads off the hydra maybe it would help.
As the masked obstacle grabbed at Ryder's shirt, he smacked sideways in a strong sweeping motion to knock Matt's hand away as he stood strongly in his place, refusing to move. He scowled, growing furious with this man. Pointing a finger at him, he leaned forward, stepping toward him strongly and angrily, "You know nothing about me! Who I am! What I do and why!" he stopped at the last sentence, dropping the arm to his side. He turned around and grabbed the bags, tossing them at Matt, "Keep them, I don't give a fuck," he started running and jumped to the next roof. Ryder had already stored most the bags away, he didn't care that he lost some, it was better than dealing with this.
Matt took a step back, anticipating a punch instead of a finger. Matt chased after the kid. "I don't want the money! I want answers!" He yelled after the kid, frustrated as he followed, always a roof behind. "Why would you betray your friend?" He yelled. "What does Piper have on you that has made you so terrified? I could hear your heart. You were nervous before the mission even started. Like you knew what was going to happen and why."
'He could hear my what?!' Ryder thought as he continued to run in attempts to lose him, 'What a freak,' Ryder slid down a rain gutter of a building, causing it to break off and hang precariously a few feet before Ryder landed on the ground. He took off down the alley way before climbing down a sewer tunnel. The rats knew their way around above and below the city.
Sable startled, jumping slightly as the vents began to turn on, hot air flowing through them, "Oh no..." she whispered, "Shit..." she could feel the oxygen getting less, she couldn't stay in the vents forever. Looking around for a way out, Sable began to crawl on forward. Unfortunately, the oxygen began to run out in the vents and she began to get too hot. She could feel herself getting dizzy, the metal vents heating up and burning the skin the touched, the only way out was down. Sable pulled her knife from her pocket, breathing slowly as she lifted it into the air and slammed it down on the vent, breaking through. Losing a lot of oxygen and energy in this escape attempt, she prayed the vent would break. Finally, the bottom of the vent gave out as Sable fell straight down, landing on a desk that broke under her weight, her knife still in her hand.
"Freeze! Hands up!" a man screamed, numerous bellows followed, "Drop the knife!"
Sable immediately complied as she saw guns pointed on her. The knife clanked to the ground and her hands flew up in the air. She knew she could get away if she really tried, but then she would really be in trouble... they would get her. The street rats goals were to be discrete and just disappear under the streets. She couldn't do that this time, that chance was long gone.
Matt shouted in frustration as Ryder got away. He knew he could probably climb down and follow the kid, but he was so fast Matt ran a better chance of getting lost before he could lock onto the sound of the kid's heartbeat to help him find his way. Matt made his way back to a roof next to the factory, just in time to hear the police yelling at Sable. He sighed, but listened closely to what was going on in case any of it was relevant to her case. If they were brutal with her it might make a difference to a jury, especially since she was a kid too. He could hear the girl's broken bones shifting, even this far away. He knew he would need Maddie to fix the girl up, if she couldn't afford her own ER visit.
"On your stomach! Hands behind your back!"
The voices screaming at her. In a laar desperate attempt, Sable lifted a piece of debris from behind the rinf of the cops atanding around her. Without looking, it was difficult to manuever. She lined it up with the back of the man's head and the second before she mentally flung it at him, another cop caught it's movement out of the corner of his eye and turned around, "Mutant!" He screamed as she released the rock, hitting a cop in the back of the head. He stumbled forward and one cop hit Sable in the back with a club before another tased her. Every muscle in her body locked up in one painful spasm. She didn't move, laying on her stomach with her eyes squeezed shut in pain, the cops rushed in, holding her down and placing hand cuffs on her.
"Don't try anything you rat!" The cops called at her as they hoisted her to her feet with ease.
Sable hung her head, her wild, now dark red hair hung in her face. She knew she had lost. She had to just ride this out... Somehow.
Matt sighed. Of course she had fought back. That wouldn't bode well in court. But they had subdued her a little more than necessary. Probably best to just leave that alone, since she had tried to hurt them in the first place. This wasn't going to be an easy case, but if he and Foggy could pull it off it would be great for this city, putting Piper behind bars possibly. Matt listened as the police transported her to a car to take her to the 19th precinct downtown. He decided to go home, get cleaned up, and wait for the call. He figured Sgt. West would help her find a lawyer, and he always directed people to Nelson and Murdock. He thought about getting in touch with Maddie as well, so she could come to the station with him and tend to Sable's wounds.
