Payton Camden

Only father’s evil eye and his presence at the table in the lovely gazebo stopped Payton from snapping a snarky comment at Graham. God knew she had that for him and more, if they were all alone, there would definitely be a sandwich flying his way. And maybe more of those as well. He came here as a guest and yet, Payton was just getting annoyed. Yes, he was supposed to marry a princess he did not love and it was awkward, Payton could understand that much. But he could definitely cut her some slack since she was in the very same situation. Well, technically, it was Danielle but details, details.

Payton just sent him another formal smile and nodded when he told her to call him Graham. After all, it was only fair, she told him not to use her title. But the rest of their little lunch went without any more stumbles. Thank god. Payton really didn’t need any more problems for herself. Graham turned to the king and they led a little conversation between them which Payton gladly did not interfere with.

Honestly, a great burden was lifted off of her shoulders when Graham agreed for the parents to figure out the tiny little details of the whole circus. Payton was not in the mood for it, knew nothing about it anyway and she had enough trouble with making the wedding dress happen. Yes, it did occur to her that Danielle’s dress was almost ready and if she was going to go through with this, the robe had to be adjusted to her since Dani was a little taller. That was a problem enough for the small redhead and she really didn’t want to bother herself with all those other things of a wedding she didn’t even want. Well, she did, for Dani’s sake. But…you know…

“I am absolutely content with your solution, Graham. I’m pretty sure that our parents will prepare a beautiful ceremony and we can put our absolute trust in them.” she spoke in soft tone and finished the last bite of her first sandwich, wiping her lips with a provided napkin. But then she almost choked on that piece when Graham asked her father for some alone time. Thankfully, she managed to mask it and reached for her lemonade immediately so no one noticed anything. What was even more dreadful was not that her father agreed but the fact that he wanted to speak to her after the lunch. That was the one talk Payton was really afraid of.

Once their plates were empty, the king stood up, offered another handshake to the prince and motioned his hand for Payton to follow him. “Thank you for finding time to visit us, your Highness. I’m sure your schedule is very tight and it means a lot you were able to have lunch with us today. I will definitely get in touch with your parents and make sure your wedding day will come without a hitch. I wish you a pleasant rest of the day. And my daughter will join you shortly.”

That was King Philip. Always polite and perfect in his conversations. Payton followed the king, making sure her back was straight this whole time until they turned to the left where they were hidden from any curious looks from the gazebo. “What is the meaning of this, Payton? Where is Danielle?” Suddenly, the king’s tone was different and Payton could hear the hint of anger in it. She looked at her father, giving him those puppy eyes he could never resist. “Don’t make those eyes at me and…oh, Payton, what kind of trick is this?”

“I’m sorry, dad, I really am. But I assure you, this is no…this is no trick. I have something to give you up in my room. I promise, I will explain everything once Graham is gone.” Payton pleaded, still sporting those eyes. “But now, I have to go. We shouldn’t make this any weirder right now. You have my promise, dad, I will tell you everything to the smallest detail.” Payton gave him a kiss on the cheek and turned on her heel to return to the gazebo, not giving her father any chance to stop her. With a deep breath in, she put her formal smile on and entered into Graham’s sight. “Would you like to take a walk? I don’t particularly enjoy sitting for a very long time and the walk after lunch might be nice.” she asked and decided to be on her best behavior. After all, if he was still a jerk, she could push him into the pond a while later.

Leo Davenport

Leo’s fear that the house was too modest and empty, basically unfurnished, was dissolving into thin air with every passing second, he was showing it to Danielle. How could he ever think that she would not like this place? Dani was a princess, that much was true, but she was also the purest human being Leo knew and she was modest, never really needed all those pompous decorations and great castles. At least that was the feeling he was getting from the woman by his side. She was so much more than your ordinary princess and it warmed Leo’s heart.

“Furniture is low…okay. I’ll remind you when you’ll wanna watch TV and cuddle on the couch. Oh, by the way. We don’t have the TV.” Leo laughed and they both headed upstairs where there was the one room Leo already managed to take care of and prepare it for actual use. Had he known he would need it so soon, he would have made much better preparations. But for now, they had a kitchen to use and bedroom to sleep in.

The idea of him sharing a bed with Danielle also occurred to him and actually brought a little blush to his cheeks. For now, all they could do was to steal a little moment to make out and cuddle in corners and secret passages and rooms around the castle. Sure, they fooled around a little bit but it was never anything serious because the threat of them being discovered was too great and neither of them wanted to get in trouble or cause trouble for the other one. But now, it was going to be different. Dani would be by his side all the time, day and night. And he would actually get to hold her through the night, hug her, smell her hair and feel the warmth of her slender form any time he would want to.

“Dibs? What dibs…ah! Okay, you little vixen, no dibs. You are not going to get rid of me that easily.” he laughed and shook his head just as she turned around in his embrace. Her honest praise, the spark in her green eyes, it all told him that whatever they were doing here was more than worth it. Leo might even be facing prison right there but he did not regret one thing because every second he got to spend in Dani’s presence was worth it.

Hearing her whispers made even the tiniest hair on the back of his neck stand. Christen the room she said. Now that was something Leo was particularly looking forward to as well and his lips curled in a mischievous grin. “Aren’t you playful already?” he whispered back and planted a sensual kiss on her lips, holding her in this tight embrace for quite a while. His hands rubbed her sides until only his fingertips were touching her and then he tickled her.

And he kept tickling her until she squirmed in his arms, until she twisted and turned and had to bend over which Leo used to lift her up, spin her again around and around and around until they both landed on the fresh linen sheets on the bed. “That is actually a wonderful idea. I mean…this room is ready…let me know when you want to start with that christening.” he laughed and kissed the tip of her nose as they laid sprawled in the sheets, in the bedroom of their new home. “I should go make us some food though. You missed lunch so I assume you’re starving. Is there anything special I could make you? Special as in, you want an omelette or grilled cheese?” he grinned as the fridge was not exactly stocked at this moment. But there was enough for some first aid makeshift lunch before he would go and get some proper groceries.

Graham Alton

Prince Graham rose when the king stood, and he shook the king’s hand, bowing his head respectfully. “Thank you Your Majesty. It was an honor to be invited, and I look forward to seeing the arrangements you and my parents make for the wedding.” He replied politely, putting on his best manners. Graham glanced over to the princess for a moment when she rose and followed after her father, but he didn’t say anything.

Once the king and princess were out of sight, Graham took his seat again to await Danielle’s return. He was a little curious as to what matters were so urgent they needed to be discussed the moment lunch was over, but Graham didn’t have long to dwell. The princess was absent only a few minutes before she returned, so whatever the matter was, must not have been that big of a deal. Oh how wrong Graham was though.

Rising when the princess approached, Graham greeted her with a bow of his head. “Sure, a walk is fine.” He replied, walking over to Payton.“Everything alright?” He inquired, referring to the king needing to talk with her. The princess had her formal smile back on, which Graham was beginning to realize was just a mask she hid behind. Much like the way Graham hid behind his own mask of charm. His hope was to get her to take off the mask though while they were alone so they could drip the charade and see what their life together would really be like.

“After you...” Graham said, gesturing with his arm for Payton to lead the way, since she was familiar with the palace grounds. The truly polite thing to do would have been to offer the princess his arm for her to take while they strolled through the garden, but Graham refrained. The first reason being because he wasn’t entirely certain Princess Danielle would take his arm and he didn’t want to be rejected. The second being that he wanted to be able to observe the princess’s expressions and body language, and that was much easier to do with some space between them.

Graham followed after Payton when she began walking, leaving the watchful eyes attendants and servants behind them. Once out of view, he let out a relieved breath and loosened his tie a little before rolling up his sleeves. The day was warm and the last thing he wanted was to sweat in his shirt.

“So... tell me something about you that I haven’t been able to read about online.” Graham challenged Payton, looking to break the ice.

Danielle Camden

Leo’s mischievous grin after Danielle mentioned christening the room made her stomach flutter in a good way. “Well, we have a lot of time to make up for...” She replied to his whisper, before he kissed her. Danielle’s eyes shut at the sensation of his lips against hers, and she melted against him in his embrace. She could feel the warmth from his hands through her dress as he rubbed her sides, ignorant to Leo’s own playful intentions. It wasn’t until it was too late and Leo was already tickling her that she realized what he had been up to.

Danielle gasped and squealed, in a very un-lady-like manner, as she tried to escape the tickling. “L-leo-ooo! S-Sto-op!” She tried to say between giggles and small cries of protest. Danielle squirmed in his arms, but it was of little use as she was no match for Leo. Doubling over, Danielle quickly found herself scooped up into Leo’s arms as he spun her around the room.

Thankful that the tickling had ceased, Danielle held onto Leo tightly as he spun them, laughing at the man who usually had been so serious while working. It was a nice change for them both to loosen up. As they fell back onto the bed, Danielle was out of breath from all her squealing and laughing, and she breathed deeply trying to catch it. Her cheeks were happily flushed as she turned her head to look at Leo when he spoke. Danielle grinned a little when he said to let him know when they should christen the room. Even just lying on the bed with Leo was nice in that moment of bliss.

Danielle hadn’t even thought about food, so caught up in her new adventure with Leo, but when he mentioned lunch, her stomach panged with hunger. “Hmm, so many choices!” Danielle laughed, rolling over on her stomach and propping her chin on her hand. “A grilled cheese, please. I don’t think I’ve ever had one before, so I’m interested to try it.” Dani admitted, the cheesy staple not having been on the palace menu.

“I have a whole list of things I want to try now!” Danielle said, lighting up as she imagined all of the firsts she could have now that she was free from restrictions and watchful eyes. “But first, a grilled cheese!” She smiled, leaning over and giving Leo a quick kiss to seal her decision.

Her eyes lingered on the handsome man for a moment when she pulled away, trying to imprint the way he looked in this moment into her memory. The unfiltered light spilled into the room in a way that it never did in the darker palace, and blanketed him in a soft glow. It was odd that such a simple moment could fill her with so much happiness and relief, but Danielle wanted to remember the feeling.

“Let’s go make those sandwiches before I decide to keep you here forever.” Danielle teased, pushing herself up into a sitting position before hopping off the bed. “You’re far too tempting laying there like that.”

Payton Camden

Talking to her father was extremely frightening for Payton. She knew she messed up big with this little stunt and the future of their kingdom depended on her now. Prince Graham also deserved to know the truth, no matter how bog of a jerk he proved to be. Payton’s cheeks ignited with blush when she remembered how she had found him very handsome and attractive at the beginning. Well, that did not change in the course of the lunch but he did not make the perfect impression by teasing her and making fun of her in the gazebo. Payton simply wished she could have reacted much better if they were eating alone. Much better being the questionable term here.

But she needed to shorten this little talk as much as possible, therefore, she promised her father to explain everything later and hastily returned to the gazebo and Graham, nice and polite as a proper Princess should be. A small smile was sitting on her face, the one she had been taught to use in her etiquette classes and she proposed a walk. The royal garden was an amazing place to walk through. The colors, the smells hanging in the air, flowers of all kinds, lawn perfected to the last leaf of grass, thousands of flower beds with roses, daffodils, tulips, hydrangeas and million other kinds. Payton didn’t even know them all.

When Graham agreed with the walk, she nodded and started walking in the direction to join the path which led to her favorite part of the garden. It was quite subconscious move and Payton only realized where she was going when it was too weird to change direction but then, he could have a look at what she liked. After all, he was about to become her husband, it was only natural that they should learn as much about each other as possible. No matter how little time they had left until the wedding. ‘If it even happens.’ Payton thought but didn’t share her concerns.

“Hm, let’s see…” Payton thought for a while over his question. “Maybe that I’m not exactly the stick in a mud as they describe me.” she shrugged and laced her fingers in front of her as they walked. An arm was expected, or at least that was what Payton knew was supposed to happen. But he didn’t offer and now she had no idea what to do with her hands so she just rested them in front of her and walked on the paved little sidewalk.

“I like to live on the active side, whether you choose to believe it or not. But this whole…life doe not really allow me to enjoy myself as much as I would like to. My father would have a heart attack if I even told him I would love to try anything that even touches adrenaline. He barely lets me go skiing in winter so if I told him about me wanting to jump out of the plane with nothing but a parachute on my back, he might just lock me in my room.”

Payton’s eyes gained this dreamy expression when she got a little lost in her words but then she realized it and blinked it away. “Well, there’s that. How about you? Are you always that quick to point out your host’s faux pas or am I just an exception?” she asked, right corner of her mouth went up in a playful smirk and she looked at her possible future husband as they passed a magnificent fountain, one of the features of the garden, spewing refreshing water all around.

Leo Davenport

As the two were lying on the bed, Leo couldn’t stop looking at the woman by his side. How did he ever get so lucky that the Princess herself decided to ditch life in palace and live with him in this place that was half finished? That was beyond him but he was certainly lucky they were here in a room they could call their bedroom now. They were going to get under the sheets together, Danielle would be the last thing Leo would see in the evening and the first one to wake up to. It was an absolute dream, everything Leo ever wanted. He just never dared to dream that it might come true for him.

Leo only suggested food because he imagined she was hungry and his stomach was quietly rumbling as well. He only had breakfast that day and that seemed eons ago already. The house did not offer a lot but he could certainly make her something real quick. A small smile graced his lips when she chose the grilled cheese. It never even occurred to him that Dani hadn’t tasted it before. But when she said it, it hit him. The palace probably employed some exquisite master chefs and those prepared all kinds of feasts but something like a simply grilled cheese was definitely not on the menu. Immediately, Leo thought of several items from the menu that he had to make for Danielle. The delicacies of his childhood.

“Well, in that case, we have to fix that immediately. Follow me, Your Royal Highness, I will get you your treat in no time.” he joked and got up, offering Dani a hand. Once her slender fingers wrapped around his, Leo pulled her up and went on whispering. “Though I wouldn’t really be against you keeping me here forever.” With a quiet laugh, he laced her fingers with his and they walked back downstairs. He didn’t suppose Dani knew how to cook and if she did, it would be just another pleasant surprise. Not that it mattered to him. He himself was quite decent. Not the best but he could feed them. The couple wouldn’t go starving.

The kitchen was nice and spacious, pretty sunny so not a lot of artificial lighting was necessary. The dark wood of the cabinets contrasted with the overall atmosphere of the place. “You can try anything you want. Just say it, make a fricking list. I wanna know what you desire and I want to make it happen for you.”

Leo was changing right there. But only with Dani in the room. Outside, he would still be his old, rough, slightly cocky dude. But he was becoming a huge softie around Dani and felt like he wanted to give her the world, no matter what the cost. Now, she was the most important part of his life and he felt like he was made of jello when Dani was around. Like a teenager, his heart was pumping so hard, beating against his ribcage, that Leo was afraid she would hear.

Once they reached the kitchen, he grabbed her by the waist and sat her up on the counter. “Now you stay here and wait.” he winked and walked to the fridge to get everything he needed. “I’m gonna make you the most basic version of it, just like my mom used to make it for me when I was a boy.” Leo then put four slices of bread in line and set a skillet on the stove. He hummed a made-up melody while throwing a small ball of butter inside and while it melted, he laid a few slices of cheddar on bread, making little neat sandwiches. Once the butter was ready, he set one sandwich inside and soon the kitchen was filled with an amazing delicious buttery and cheesy smell. And a few minutes later, he served his princess with a plate with a golden brown crispy sandwich. His own was now in the skillet but he just wanted to see the reaction when Dani tasted her first grilled cheese ever. “So? What do you think?”

Graham Alton

Prince Graham looked around the garden as Payton began leading them through the grounds. The plants and flowers were perfectly manicured, and while Graham would expect no less, he still was impressed. His gaze turned away from the scenery and settled on Payton as she began to answer his question.

The red head was beautiful, Graham could admit that much to himself. Her blue eyes sparkled naturally in the sunlight, and her fair skin glowed. The prince watched her intently as she pondered a response, holding her arms in front of her as they walked. For the briefest of moments, Graham had the urge to lace his own fingers with hers instead of letting her delicate hands grasp themselves, but he didn’t act on it. It wouldn’t be proper and she wouldn’t want him to, he imagined.

Graham chuckled a little when Payton brought up that the media made Princess Danielle out to be a stick in the mud. The princess definitely had the reputation of being prim and proper, but wasn’t that the goal of any royal? Graham did his best to seem as dull as possible in the news and magazines, hoping that a lack of drama would reduce the amount of paparazzi surrounding him on outings.

“I have no reason not to believe you,” Graham replied when Payton said he could believe her or not about living on the active side. “I mean, I imagine you’re the best source of information about yourself, Danielle.” He added, happy to hear she was more than the articles reported.

“Though, I wonder if I should also have to keep you locked in your room once we’re married. A future Queen shouldn’t be jumping out of a plane. Would hardly be proper.” The prince said, half jokingly with a smirk. He didn’t really approve of the idea of his future wife sky diving, but he didn’t have any true intention to lock her in her room. At least not yet.

The dreamy expression on Payton’s face while she thought about her adrenaline inducing activities both drew Graham in and worried him. It was refreshing that the princess had aspirations to try new and potentially dangerous things, and gave more hope that she wouldn’t be a boring wife. But Graham also worried that he would have his hands full with her. Graham hadn’t spent his whole life staying within the lines to become a successful king, only to have a reckless Queen-to-be bring scandal upon them. Luckily Payton came out of her day dream and turned the conversation over to Graham before the Prince could dwell too long.

Graham scowled a little when Payton asked about him pointing out faux pas, contrasting her smirk. She was still hung up on that, huh? The prince’s scowl softened a little though as he thought about his answer and shrugged. “Certainly not an exception, so don’t take it too personally princess.” Graham replied, stopping for a moment to observe the fountain and buy him some time.

“Though, typically my hosts aren’t the ones forgetting their attire etiquette,” He added, shooting her a smirk back now. “Usually it’s guests who are more removed from the rules... So in that case I suppose you are an exception.” It was hard to resist teasing the beautiful young woman. Perhaps because it was easier to throw little jabs at each other than try to connect emotionally and give in to their destined wedding.

“I play Polo and fence to achieve that adrenaline rush you were speaking of.” The prince said, now looking away from Payton as he watched the water flow from the fountain. “But beyond that, I can’t say I’ve ever had the notion to jump out of a plane... Though, if I did, I imagine my parents would also deny me the chance too.” He added, finding some common ground with Payton. After all, they were both the victims of this arrangement and similar upbringings. They could at least relate on some levels.

“What about your siblings? We both have a brother and sister- do you get along? Do they share your adventurous spirit?” Graham asked casually, unaware that he was actually speaking to the sibling of Princess Danielle at this very moment.

Danielle Camden

Danielle smiled as Leo offered her his hand, and she happily accepted it, excited to finally taste a grilled cheese. Her cheeks flushed ever so slightly when he whispered about not being against her keeping him in bed forever, and she laughed softly. “Perhaps after lunch that can be arranged...” Danielle replied teasingly as she followed Leo down the stairs, her hand in his.

In that moment, as she allowed Leo to lead her back to the kitchen, Danielle realized that she would follow this man just about anywhere. A day ago, it was Leo who was tasked with following the princess around wherever she went, and now the roles had flipped. Not that Danielle minded really. Instead she was looking forward to being around Leo without him being required to be her shadow. They could now be two individuals who chose to be together, instead of Leo being paid to be with her.

For a split second that last thought made Danielle panic. What if Leo realized that he didn’t really like being with her now that his job and earning a living didn’t require him to? Her thought was less about fearing that Leo only liked her because he was paid, and more about fearing that she herself would lose her appeal once Leo just saw her for her and how unprepared she was for reality.

The princess’s insecurities started to get the best of her for a few moments, but her doubts were subdued when Leo told Danielle that he wanted to make her anything that she desired. A wave of reassurance washed over Danielle and she looked up Leo with a grateful smile.

“Does that only apply to food?” Danielle joked, her insecurities already a distant memory. She took a closer look around the kitchen this time, noting how the sunlight filled the room and made it inviting. Though even as she tried to admire the kitchen, her gaze kept trailing back to Leo. He looked more relaxed now than she had ever seen him. He was still wearing the suit he usually did while guarding her, but he looked like a different man. In a good way.

It occurred to Danielle that she had never seen Leo when he wasn’t on duty, and she wondered if this softened demeanor was how he usually was on his day off. A small smile tugged at her lips when she recalled how Leo had once been the hardened bodyguard who was a bit cocky and often seemed annoyed by her when they first met. In the beginning, Danielle really had only been a job to Leo, and she was just someone he was paid to protect. She probably could have made it a bit easier on him, but she was in her late teens at the time and took pleasure in giving the cute bodyguard a hard time. But as the years went by, they’d started acting differently around each other in private as their relationship became more than a working one and now... now their relationship was entirely free from the binds of a job.

Danielle’s stomach fluttered a little when Leo easily lifted her onto the counter and told her to stay put with a wink. She bit her lip, trying to keep her thoughts on food and not how his innocent action was kind of a turn on.

“I’m excited to try the Davenport special.” Danielle replied, swinging her legs gently as she watched Leo start working on the sandwiches from her perch on the counter. His humming was cute, and Danielle mischievous thoughts were replaced by trying to picture Leo as a boy eating his mom’s grilled cheeses. She felt a pang of guilt, wondering how her running away would affect Leo’s relationship with his parents. She’d never meet them, and now, wondered if she ever would. But, that was another worry for another time as Leo brought over Danielle’s sandwich.

“Looks delicious!” Danielle smiled, picking up one of the warm sandwich halves, and raising it up in a toast. “Cheers to a first!” She said, taking a bite of the grilled cheese. Her eyes widened at the taste of the buttered bread and melted cheese- such a simple combination but absolutely divine. “Oh my god!” Danielle uttered between chews, forgetting her manners for a moment. “This is amazing!” She continued once she had swallowed. “I don’t know why the palace doesn’t serve these, I’ve been missing out!” Danielle gushed, taking another bite. She didn’t mean to be rude by not waiting for Leo to finish his sandwich, but she was under the spell of her newfound favorite food.

“My compliments to the chef!” Danielle mused, grabbing the fabric of Leo’s shirt and using it to pull him close enough to give him a kiss of gratitude. “Thank you!” She smiled. “Don’t forget about your sandwich though.” Danielle added, not wanting to be the reason his ended up burnt. The princess was impressed that Leo could cook, having never thought about the matter before. She’d have to learn from him. Other than simple things that she’d sneak down into the kitchen to make at night with Payton, all of which didn’t require cooking, Danielle’s skills in the kitchen were lacking. But, she’d have plenty of time to take up a new hobby or two now.

Payton Camden

There were so many things Payton always wanted to try. She was the youngest sibling, the one that was allowed to have a little bit more freedom than her brother and sister. Phillip was the heir, he had to keep his public image flawless. Danielle was the perfect princess and ever since the engagement was announced, she needed to be in control even more than before. Payton was the only one cut slack and though she had her royal duties t carry out, no great role within the monarchy was awaiting her.

Therefore, she put down a bucket list of everything she wanted to try. You can imagine her disappointment when all her dreams were thwarted by her father who definitely did not approve of his daughter living on the wild side. Payton was banned from doing anything that was deemed dangerous or life-threatening and it had her pouting for days. The most exciting thing she got to do was horse riding so she used every moment to take her white mare, her beautiful Starlight and rode around the extensive land of the royal palace, even venturing to the nearby woods. Of course, her father didn’t know that as he would kill her right away.

And now…now it was probably all over for her since she took Danielle’s place. There was no way she would be allowed to do everything she could do now, no matter as limited. So when Graham’s question came, Payton felt she had to answer honestly. She could be Danielle in many things, she could take her place at the altar, but inside, the same old Payton was always going to reside. After all, there was no way she could pretend to be someone else her whole life, that was simply not doable, no matter how much she loved Dani.

“I never really cared what was proper.” Payton spoke and immediately scolded herself. “I mean…in private, of course. There are many ways for me to fulfil my dreams without anyone knowing who I am or what family I belong to. But no, you don’t have to worry about that, I will not be sky diving since, as I was pointed out, no future Queen should be jumping out of the plane.” Payton returned Graham that smirk and they walked further in the garden.

Payton’s eyes traveled over Graham for a while. She had to admit that despite his mean comment and obvious passion in pointing out her mistakes, he was incredibly handsome. Pictures in magazines never did him justice and not even Dani’s description was doing it. Sun reflected in his eyes and that ever-present smirk was actually quite charming. Payton always had a weakness for rather bad boys and though he was a future King, he had that mischievous spark in him.

His answer to her question had her narrow her eyes. “Just when I thought you were actually bearable…” she mumbled and changed her direction, walking straight to the fountain. She still remembered how she, Dani and Philip ran around it as kids. Payton even got inside only to get scolded by father that the Princesses do not jump into fountains. The memory had her smile and Payton had to suppress the giggles.

“My siblings…yeah, yes, we do get along. Though unfortunately, I don’t get to see my brother as often as I would like to these days. But my sister…Payton…I love her more than anyone else. She’s my best friend I have to say.” Remembering Dani, a sad smile appeared on her lips and to mask it, Payton bent down to pick up a daisy flower. At least her hands now had something to fidget with. “How do you imagine our life together, Graham? Any ideas for the future?”

Leo Davenport

Even though they were together in this new place of theirs only for a while, Leo already felt like it were years. He could imagine their little simple life with Dani, living here, fixing the house together, having dinners on the patio, sleeping in at weekends and maybe…just maybe, at some point in the future, if Dani wanted, they could even have their little family here. Leon knew that was getting way too ahead of himself but having a little ginger girl beautiful like Dani running around would be an absolute dream come true.

Many people didn’t know it, they wouldn’t even guess it, judging by Leo’s appearance, but he was a huge family man. Being an only child did not spoil him rotten as it usually happens, it had him wanting more kids. Two, three…who knew? But a family of his own was one of his top three priorities. Of course, he was not going to tell Dani immediately. He was no idiot and was not going to scare his Princess with kids talk right away. Just the fact that they were here and she wanted to stay here with him was warming his heart incredibly and brough him one step closer to achieving his ultimate goal.

As he was getting ready for cooking, Leo realized that this was something he would love to do every day. Smell of butter and melted cheese filled the kitchen immediately and while his own sandwich was getting done, he brought the ready serving to Danielle. She was beautiful, sitting on the counter, sun shining in her hair, making them a shade of brighter red. His heart fluttered over seeing that picture and another wave of love flooded the man. But nothing, literally nothing on earth could measure up with the look on her face when she took the first bite.

Her exclamation and praise made her look so cute that Leo had to laugh. Palace served exquisite delicacies but Leo still thought that those simple meals could sometimes add more satisfaction than any French cuisine recipe any cook could whip up. After all, he grew up on grilled cheese and it was always his go-to meal when he was sad or angry or frustrated. Seeing the look on Danielle’s face and how she was enjoying it, he felt like the happiest man in the world.

“You love it, don’t you?” he grinned. “There’s more where that came from.” He winked and clicked his tongue as she pulled him closer. His hand rested on her cheek as the couple shared a cuddly kiss.

Leo returned to the stove just in time to flip his sandwich over and then finally took the jacket off. He rolled the sleeves of his white shirt up to the elbows and finished his sandwich in no time, cutting it in half. Only then he returned to Danielle and eat while standing by her side. And in that moment, everything was perfect.

“I’ll let you unpack upstairs and get comfortable. Maybe then we could go and do a little grocery shopping, hm? I would love to treat you to a nice dinner in the evening and welcome you in our new home.” he smiled and took another bite, chewing thoughtfully. Honestly, fuck the fact that there were no chairs or table. He was crafty and could think of some makeshift environment. Hopeless romantic inside him would definitely be able to whip up something nice. And the empty open space in the living room just gave him the perfect idea.

Graham Alton

The prince was relieved to hear that his future wife was sensible enough to not have any aspirations of skydiving as the queen. He didn't particularly mind if she wasn't the most proper woman behind closed doors, but appearances in the public eye were everything. One wrong move or outfit or remark and the monarchy was sure to make frontpage headlines and be forced to do damage control.

"Well, if riding is your release, then we will have to make sure that your horse, er, Starlight, makes the trip to North Astoria with you. Our stables are full of magnificent horses, but I imagine that we could find room for one more if it would please you." Graham said, trying to offer an olive branch. His research must have been wrong though, as he thought he recalled reading somewhere that Princess Danielle's horse was named Poppy. Of course, the princess could have multiple horses and perhaps Starlight was a secret favorite.

Graham's thoughts were interrupted though by Payton's comment about him being unbearable and her sudden change of direction. He chuckled, trailing after her towards the fountain. She definitely was as fiery as her hair. If it wasn't so amusing to see the princess's moments of annoyance, perhaps Graham would cut her a little slack. But he quite enjoyed cracking her attempts at perfection, and though he'd lost track of the score a while back, imagined he was still in the lead when it came to jabs at one another.

"Another mistake on your part..." Graham joked, referring to her thinking he was bearable. "I'll add it to the growing list." The prince noticed her annoyed expression soften into a smile, and he wondered what Payton was thinking. Though, whatever the happy thought was must have been fleeting, because her smile turned sad at the mention of her sister.

"I see... Will Payton be your maid of honor then?" Graham asked. He imagined her sadness was due to missing her sister once she joined him in his kingdom. "She can also come visit of course, when we don't have any major duties to attend to and South Astoria can spare its Princess..." He added, hoping to ease her worries.

Payton's next question gave Graham pause though, as the conversation took a more serious turn. Their future... What did he imagine their future to be like?

"I suppose I imagine the future to be similar to my life now... just with a legal document saying that you are my wife..." Graham replied, frowning a little in thought as he stared at the fountain. "I mean, we live in a modern world where arranged marriages seem archaic. I don't expect you to force yourself to love me, nor do I plan to force you to be with me when you don't want to." The word "be" carrying more than one meaning here.

"Though, with love absent in our marriage, I hope that we can at least respect one another and not completely seek to destroy the other's happiness." The prince added, finally looking over to Payton. Yes, he enjoyed tormenting and teasing her, but he still didn't want her to hate him completely or feel the need to make his life a living hell. "Afterall, I imagine you don't truly want this marriage, just as I don't. But, it's our duty to protect the well-being and future of our kingdoms. For better or worse."

Danielle Camden

Hazel eyes watched Leo as he returned to the stove, taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves. He looked so relaxed in the kitchen, and Danielle was tempted to burn his jacket so he could never put it on again. It was just a reminder of the restrictive life they’d left behind, and Danielle preferred Leo’s more casual look. Though Leo was the most handsome man in the world to Danielle, so really he could wear anything and she’d like it.

“Yes, I love it!” Danielle smiled, taking another bite as Leo walked over with his own sandwich. “And I love this.” She added, referring to them here in the kitchen, together. “Just keep these sandwiches coming and I’ll be yours forever.” She teased, in between bites. As far as Danielle was concerned, the moment Leo agreed to go on the run with her, she was his forever. Or at least as long as he wanted her.

Danielle may have been a princess with a beautiful castle, but from her perch on the counter, this moment with Leo felt like the real fairytale. Her knight in shining armor had just made her the most delicious sandwich she’d ever eaten and there was no one in sight to point out that sitting on the counter wasn’t proper. If this was what their new reality would be like, then she would live happily ever after.

Finishing her last bite of the first sandwich half, Danielle nodded. "That sounds good. Shouldn't take me long to unpack, I didn't have time to throw much into the bag." She replied, lighting up at the idea of grocery shopping. "Can I push the cute little cart around? I've never gotten to."

All of Danielle's previous experiences at grocery stores were typically highly supervised and for the purpose of a photo-op or a staged event of the Royal Family visiting their people. She'd never actually shopped for groceries before though. This would be a ceremonial event of becoming a regular person, and Danielle was oddly excited about it. For most, buying groceries was a chore, but for the princess, it was another "first".

Danielle's heart fluttered everytime Leo referred to the house as "their home", feeling as though she was in a dream and afraid to wake up from it. "You are so sweet Leo, dinner would be lovely." She smiled, starting to eat her second half. It didn't take long though before Danielle found herself with an empty plate and a full stomach. Sighing contently, the princess pushed herself off of the counter and took her plate over to the sink.

"You cooked, so I'll wash the dishes after we get back from the store." She decided, walking back over to Leo to keep him company while he finished his sandwich. She might not be familiar with doing chores, but she was determined not to make Leo wait on her for everything. Danielle wanted to become capable and fit into this new lifestyle so that she and Leo could be equals. "Thanks again. Next time you'll have to teach me how to make them." Danielle added, leaning against the counter and just gazing at Leo for a moment.

It had been hard to keep her feelings for the tall, handsome man in check during their secret fling, but she had become accustomed to not looking at him too long, or laughing to loudly at his jokes while in the palace. That was the only way for them to keep their secret relationship, well, a secret. But now... Now she didn't have to pretend that she wasn't wild for her ex-bodyguard or counting down the hours until she could steal a kiss in a dark corner. So she took this opportunity just to watch him without fear of someone catching her adoring looks at him.

Payton Camden

Poor Payton had no idea how much information graham had on Dani. Then again, she also forgot that she was supposed to be completely her sister and foolishly talked about her horse’s name. To an attentive observer, someone who really did their fair share of reading on the Camden family, such fact would never escape. There was this whole article on the Camden sisters which also included an interview where the sisters talked about their privacy. Of course, only to an extent they were allowed to. One of the questions was about hobbies and Payton went on and on how she loved horse riding and she also might have mentioned her white mare. Starlight.

The fact occurred to her when it was too late and the words were out. The redhead was hoping beyond hope that Graham had not done an extensive research on Danielle. There was no way Payton could handle herself well if he started to pick on the details. She could learn a lot of stuff but not now. Not today. Not at this very moment. “It would be my greatest joy if you could.” she spoke after a while and offered him a shy smile. If she had to leave South Astoria with a husband not of her choice, saving Dani and her true love, she would at least have her horse with her. Maybe that could offer a little refuge in a foreign place.

“You’re lucky my father was at the table with us. I would balance the score sooner than you’d be able to say ‘asshat’.” Payton looked at him, challenge glinting in her eyes. Her cheeks colored in red when she realized the word she used and held her breath for a moment. After all, he had to learn that she was not going to let him walk all over her. She could prick just they way he was doing that to her and now that they were alone, she was going to prove it to him.

The sibling talk also proved to be rather unfortunate though Payton couldn’t blame Graham for asking innocent questions. After all, he was left in the dark on this little fraud. The idea of maid of honor didn’t even occur to her. How could it? This morning, Payton was nothing but the youngest princess, carefree and able to live her own life. Now, she was Danielle Camden, engaged to Graham Alton, the future Queen of Astoria. “She might…” Payton spoke quietly and averted her eyes, pretending to be incredibly interested in the water spray.

With a daisy rolling between her fingers, she looked up and asked the question that was more pressing than any others, more important than all the jabbing at each other. His answer was expected. Of course, he didn’t want that marriage. He didn’t want her. Well, he didn’t want Dani so Payton couldn’t expect him to want her. Plain old Payton. Her head was flooded with thoughts all of a sudden, thoughts about when might be the right time to tell him Danielle was not making it to the wedding.

“You’re right…” she spoke and started to tear the daisy petals off one by one in that typical “he loves me, he loves me not” way. “I can assure you you’ll have my respect. If you deserve it, of course.” Her eyes met his and Payton threw the bare rest of the flower away. “I don’t want to be the only one trying to make this a marriage of two civilized people and not the hunger games arena. I’ll make mistakes, you’ll make some as well. But I cannot have you walking around me and pointing them all out. Since neither of us can do anything about this, I’m willing to go through with the whole charade but since, as you said, this is more about the future well-being of our kingdoms, I need a partner, not an enemy.”

As Payton talked, she realized three things. First, the atmosphere between the two became rather serious. Second, the fountain calmed down a little bit which meant the it was going to launch its outburst of water, spraying it all over, even outside of its borders, in a magnificent explosion of rain. Third, Graham was standing right on that one spot where the water was going to hit.

Countdown started in Payton’s head and she was fighting her facial features hard so she wouldn’t reveal the grand finale. She took a few steps away, pretending she was just moving from one place to another so Graham wouldn’t move. She even picked up another daisy to mask her intentions. And then her countdown reached zero, the water burst out and the great cold stream hit Graham right away, drenching the Prince from head to toes. It was the point when Payton couldn’t hold it and seeing water leaking from his hair, face and clothes, she burst out laughing, covering her mouth with both of her hands.

Leo Davenport

Seeing Danielle so happy over a couple of sandwiches, Leo had to laugh. There were so many things he had to show her. So many great meals to cook for her, so many places to take her. He already composed a little bucket list for them and hell, he was going to put it down on the paper and pin in on the fucking fridge, checking out the items one by one. This woman was making him want to make a glitter poster out of it and draw little stick people all over it representing the two of them. In short, Leo wanted to be silly because for the first time, he could.

“Yeah? Do I have to buy you with killer sandwiches then? Just wait for my mac&cheese then.” he laughed and took her chin between the thumb and index finger of his left hand, the one which was not holding a sandwich, and lifted her face up to plant a soft kiss on her lips. There was no way he would stop kissing her now. They were in their own little haven and there was not one person to tell them they couldn’t kiss each other for hours if they decided.

But it was all nothing compared to her reaction to mentioning a grocery store. To Leo, it was nothing special. He was going there once or twice a week, sometimes even more. He was going to have to get used to Dani’s reactions to ordinary things. The royal palace didn’t allow the kids to experience ordinary life and Leo needed to realize it. He smiled over her question and tucked a loose strand of her red locks behind her ear. “You totally can. I find it obnoxious so I’ll gladly have you do it this time.” he laughed and went on to finish his snack.

“But you need to put something on that gorgeous head of yours. I suggest ponytail and I’ll give you one of my baseball hats. Plus glasses. We can’t afford anyone recognizing the Camden princess in a supermarket.” And as much as he hated that idea, there was a great possibility Dani would have to dye her hair as well. The red crown was one of his favorite things about her but that just had to go. It was way too notable and if they could stay in this house for as long as it was possible, even better.

The house offered the perfect refuge since no one knew about it so Leo wanted to stay here for a bit longer and no leave until they were forced to. As she hopped off of the counter and grabbed the plates, Leo couldn’t love her more. The fact that she herself was going to do the chores because she wanted to was heart-warming. Leo was happy to do it but this was just another proof that his girl was no prissy princess. His head was already filled with ideas what to make her for dinner and he knew he wanted to keep it simple. She had all those high-end meals back at the palace and Leo couldn’t compete with those chefs. And he didn’t even want to. It was time for Danielle to taste the ordinary world.

“I’ll be right back.” Leo told her and jogged upstairs because he decided to change from the formal wear. Not having to wear suit every day was going to be liberating. There were a few of his things in the closet already and he undid his shirt, throwing it on the bed. He then pulled a simple blue shirt on and changed his pants fast to get comfortable for shopping. He had no shopping list ready and was going to go for whatever he saw. The bast kind of shopping. Thankfully, Leo also had some cash withdrawn as paying by card was not exactly what he was keen on doing at this point.

Since Danielle was casually dressed, he only grabbed his hat and ran down the stairs, back to her. “Here, put this on. It’s not the bet disguise but it might help a little.” he smiled and went to grab his car keys and wallet. Lacing his fingers with hers, Leo gave her a gentle squeeze, leading his princess outside. “You ready for our first adventure, sweetness?” he chuckled and locked the door once they were both out the door. “I have a list of snacks to feed you so get ready, you might get a sugar overdose.”

Graham Alton

While Graham had done his homework on Danielle, his research had not extended to the princess's family yet. If it had, perhaps Graham would have noticed the first clue that his bride to be was not who he thought she was after Payton's slip up. Luckily for the younger princess, her secret was safe, for now.

Graham nodded when Payton took him up on the offer to have Starlight join them in North Astoria. Hopefully the horse would keep the future Queen out of other mischief, while earning Graham some brownie points for his thoughtful gesture. Though, any hopes of brownie points were almost entirely forgotten when the word "asshat" escaped Payton's lips.

"Such language hardly suits such a pretty young woman," the Prince replied, his dark eyes narrowing at Payton, taking her comment as an inference that he was an "asshat". "I can only imagine what his majesty would think hearing his daughter say such a thing. Though if you are using the King as an excuse as to why you didn't speak your mind earlier, I'm wondering why you haven't attempted to settle the score now." Graham said, looking around the empty garden and gesturing with his hands. "I don't see your father around anywhere..." He challenged, a little vexed at Payton now.

Prince Graham had to swallow his vexation though to answer Payton's question about the future, which he did to the best of his ability. His gaze remained on Payton as she replied with her own opinion of what their future held. Her request that he lay off a bit was fair, and once they were married Graham would do his best to keep his thoughts on her mistakes to himself. However, any other agreement that Graham may have had about Payton's sentiment that they should be partners, not enemies, was doused, along with the Prince, by the spray from the fountain.

"What the hell?!" Graham cursed as the cold water drenched him, both in surprise and in anger. He jumped away from the fountain, but the damage had already been done and the princess was outright laughing at him. Graham's eyes flashed dangerously as he looked over to Payton, her enjoyment over what happened greatly contrasting his annoyance. The fact that she'd managed not to get a single drop of water on her and was quick to laugh, made Graham suspect that she'd known that he was going to be a victim of the fountain.

"Your words about being partners not enemies seem rather insincere now." Graham uttered through clenched teeth. The prince was doing his best to keep his temper contained, and had anyone else pulled the stunt that Payton just had, he would have torn into them. As it was though, Payton was protected from Graham's wrath by their engagement.

The prince cursed again under his breath as he stood there dripping wet, creating a puddle on the ground beneath him. His perfectly slicked back hair now hung down a little in his eyes, and his outfit was drenched through. There was no way that Graham could be seen in such a state. He would now have to remain hidden somewhere in the garden until his clothes dried, or risk who knows what kind of rumors being spread about by the servants if they were to see him soaking wet. He would be no fool.

"You knew that was going to happen." Graham said icily, glaring at Payton and her laughter. "I wonder how the King would feel to learn of how you've treated your guest and future husband. This hardly is a step in the right direction at strengthening relations between the two countries." He added, a tone of warning in his voice.

Danielle Camden

Leo's mention of mac & cheese intrigued Danielle, his kiss warmed her and his agreement that she could push the cart excited her. Everything was perfect... until the mention of Dani's hair and the possibility of someone recognizing her. For some reason, being out in the countryside made Danielle forget that she was still one of the most well-known figures in the country. Whether they were 5 miles or 500 miles from the palace, anyone who had a TV or read the paper probably knew who she was. And that was a problem.

"Oh, right," Danielle nodded slowly, self-consciously playing with the ends of her hair for a moment as she thought. This new life with Leo would require many sacrifices, on both their parts, and Danielle's precious locks were just going to have to be another one. "Well, it's just hair I guess..." She sighed, resigned to the idea that she'd have to do something about her signature hair. Their fiery red manes had always been one of the features that made it so hard to tell her and Payton apart, but now... now she'd be giving that up, and feel that much further from her sister. A hat and ponytail would probably work for now, at least until word got out that she was missing, but in the long run, she'd need to come up with a more permanent solution.

Once the dishes were in the sink, Danielle watched as Leo disappeared up the stairs to change. Finding herself alone for the first time today since waking up, Danielle took a deep breath and let it out slowly. The full consequences of her decision had not completely set in yet, and as she was left alone with her thoughts, Danielle did her best to ignore them some more. So far she'd only focussed on the positives of running away with Leo, but eventually some of the negatives would make themselves known. Negatives beyond just having to dye her hair. For now though, she wanted to postpone those thoughts for as long as possible.

Danielle's things were all still in the jeep, so she didn't have a hair tie at the moment, but as she perused the kitchen, peeking into cabinets and sliding drawers open curiously, she came across a few rubber bands in one of the drawers with knicknacks. Pulling her hair back out of her face and up into a ponytail, Danielle used the rubberband to secure her hair in the up-do. She rarely wore her hair in a ponytail, and really only wore it up in other styles for formal occasions. Though the casual hairstyle just might have to become her new go-to.

Leo wasn't gone long, and Danielle smiled when he came back down the stairs, giving him a little once over. "Looking good." She said, taking the hat that he offered and putting it on her head after slipping her hair through the back of the cap. The hat was a little big on her, so she tightened the adjustable part as small as it would go. Satisfied, she turned to Leo and flourished her hands as she gestured to the hat. "What do you think, am I a new person?" She asked teasingly.

Danielle gave Leo's hand a little squeeze back when he laced his fingers with hers after grabbing his keys and wallet. "Yes, I'm excited!" The princess replied, hiding that she was also a little nervous. His comment about the sugar overdose made her laugh though and forget about her worries for now. "Well, I look forward to all the tasty treats. Bring it on!" She replied, following Leo out the door.

When they got to the Jeep, Danielle stood on her tiptoes to give Leo a peck on the cheek real quick, before going to her side of the car. Once the car was unlocked, Danielle hopped in and buckled up. She pulled her sunglasses from her purse and slipped them on her face, completing her disguise to the best of their ability. She looked in the mirror on the back of the sun visor for a moment, examining her reflection, before flipping the visor back up, satisfied. "As long as word hasn't gotten out that I've run away, I think we'll be okay." She said optimistically as Leo climbed into the driver's seat and started the car.

"I grabbed all of my cash that I've saved up over the years..." Danielle mentioned, looking into her purse. "But some of it is in different currencies from my trips abroad, so we'll have to find a place that does exchanges eventually." The princess was occasionally given spending cash when she was going out for public appearances or to mingle with the locals to help relations in other countries. Over the years, Danielle had saved up all that she didn't spend in a wooden jewelry box, liking the false sense of independence having her own money gave her. Everything else was always bought on her father's account, so her petty cash had been her own little secret stash. And now, it was finally going to come in handy.

Payton Camden

Graham was really trying her patience right there. His words sounded rather like father scolding his lively and disobedient daughter than a fiancé talking to a woman he was supposed to marry. Payton had heard enough of those words in her life and she really didn’t need to be hearing them again. Definitely not from Graham Alton. And he even went as far as mentioning her dad. Payton was getting annoyed again and no matter how many actually nice moment the two shared, Graham ruined each and every one of them by being…yeah, asshat.

“You talk about how a princess should behave and now you are daring me to settle the score? Please, could this be any cheaper?” she smirked as they approached the fountain and she played with her flower. Payton knew very well what he was doing and she was not going to fall for that. At least not in any obvious way. If she wanted to get back at him for criticizing her this whole time, she needed to be smart and cunning about it. And the fountain just gave her the perfect idea.

When the water burst out, Payton made sure she was in safe distance from it and so the stream only hit Graham. The picture in front of her was so hilarious that Payton couldn’t have helped herself and burst out laughing when Graham stood in front of her completely drenched. “Oh, wow. Such language hardly suits a handsome young gentlemen.” she snickered, using his words against him. Suddenly, his perfection was gone and all that was left was a dripping angry boy.

Way too furious apparently. The icy words leaving his mouth made Payton’s laughter die in her throat and the color vanished from her face for a moment. The tone, clenched jaw, daggers in his eyes, it all made Payton’s blood freeze and she gulped. Until the moment she heard that silent threat in his voice. Her eyes narrowed and Payton huffed in a pretty exasperated way. “Wow, admirable, your Highness. Are you threatening to tell on me?” she asked and shook her head in disbelief.

However, seeing him right there, drenched to the bone, water dripping from every inch of her body, Payton sighed and approached him, looking in his eyes. Her hands went up and she pushed wet strands of his hair back, away from his face, and wiped his face a little she could. Not that it did a lot but it was the intention that counted, wasn’t it?

“Don’t worry, I’ll spare you the embarrassment of anyone seeing you like this. Come on.” The expression in her face softened and Payton decided to take mercy on him. Okay, maybe he was being mean to her a lot and yes, she wanted to get back at him but it was also possible that she overstepped the boundaries way too much.

They were in a part of the garden that was further away from the castle and there was just the place the two could go. And though Payton was not extremely excited to reveal the piece of her privacy just like this but it was the perfect place to go and provide the first aid in this catastrophe. Payton took his hand, a gesture so natural and innocent that she didn’t even realized what it meant at first. She just led him further behind the trees, away from the path where a small shed-like house was built, hidden from the prying eyes of people who were not supposed to know. It was small but when they entered, he would see that it was cozy. This was the place where Philip, Dani and Payton used to play as kids, it was their tiny little kingdom and they all were the rulers. Almost like Narnia.

“There are some clothes as well if you want to change. They are my brother’s but he won’t mind.” Payton spoke softly and pointed at the small wardrobe in the corner. The whole place was just one room so it could be very awkward but she had to at least offer. “And please, accept my sincere apologies. I went too far. I should have warned you.” she added, deciding to be the bigger person here.

The thought of Danielle changing the crown of her beauty was painful. Leo loved the fiery locks framing her face perfectly, shining in the dark room, in the crowd, always making her visible to him. And even though Payton sported the very same color of hair, Leo could always tell which sister was which even if they were turned with their backs to him. Now the thought that the ginger hair was supposed to go lighter or darker, whatever Danielle decided, it hurt him terribly.

Once he returned downstairs, handed Daniele the cap, he couldn’t stop watching her. Her hair in a ponytail was such a rare sight and honestly, he loved it. It made the hair go away from her face and made it even more radiant. Hair hung from the point where they were tied by a rubber band and created a thick, wavy ponytail, softly swishing from side to side. The cap added her even more casual tone and he could just smother her with love. She had never looked more ordinary and she had never looked prettier. Fuck all those gowns and expensive clothing. Leo liked her the best when she was not all dolled up.

“You look far better.” Leo smiled at her after she complimented his changed attire. Honestly, he felt like a lumberjack next to her. His closet was not the most fashionable or trendy as he preferred rather functional clothing. The most fancy part were his suits but apparently, he was not going to need those any time soon. “Only in your looks.” Leo just gave her one more kiss. It seemed he couldn’t stop doing it. Ever since they were alone and able to share intimacies like this, he had to use every single moment.

He had a shopping list in his head. A pretty long one. Granted, it was not going to be the healthiest shopping ever but damn, he wanted to share everything with her now that she was living in his world. Judging by the joy in Danielle’s eyes, she felt the very same thing. “Oh, it’s on, sweetness. It’s totally on.” he grinned and they both walked to the car together, getting in shortly after.

Leo stuck the key in ignition and turned it. His scrappy jeep coughed a bit but then came to life. After a while. “Shitty old thing.” Leo mumbled and shook his head as he slowly pulled away, turned the car around and they were on their way to the grocery store. The jeep was practically his first car he got himself and there was an emotional bond there. Leo couldn’t just throw it away under any circumstances. Until the very last breath, he promised that to the old man his car was.

“All good, the first shopping is on me. I want to treat you like you deserve today. So all you’re going to worry about is that cute little cart and how you’re going to push it around the store, got it?” he asked, turning his head to look at her. This new life did not mean that Leo was going to treat Danielle like a sugar doll but he really wanted to celebrate their first day of freedom. At least until he could. If they were lucky, the guards were still not alerted and they were going to enjoy their little piece of heaven for some time now.

Leo fidgeted with the radio for a while until he found some decent music station. Driving such an old car also meant that he didn’t have the option of connecting it to his phone’s Bluetooth so they were stuck with some mainstream pop for the whole time as they drove. The store was rather close, no longer than a ten-minute drive so before Leo even got comfortable in his seat, he was parking at the entrance. “So? Ready for that cart?”

Graham Alton

The Prince of North Astoria instantly regretted criticizing Payton for her use of "asshat" when she turned his words against him after his cursing. However, right now his regret was the least of his concerns, and he was tempted to let another string of curses escape from his mouth. This situation was truly a nightmare for him. He was already in an arranged marriage, on a visit he'd preferred not to have been on, with a woman who was proving to be a challenging fiance... and now he was soaking wet to top it all off!

Graham took inventory of himself, finding little hope that any part of him remained dry. However, when Payton's laughter fell silent, he looked over at her and soon found himself filled with more regret. Perhaps his reaction to her prank had been a little too harsh. While an honest response, the prince scolded himself for not maintaining more of his composure. He hated the look the Princess now gave him, obviously taken aback by his outburst, her face pale. Before Graham could open his mouth to form an apology though, anger must have replaced her unease, and Payton responded with narrowed eyes and exasperated words.

"If I had any hope that your prank would be enough of an excuse to void the arrangement, then yes. Maybe it would be a threat." Graham responded curtly, doing his best to begin wringing out the water from his garments. "But I don't think sharing your momentary lapse of judgement would do anything but piss off the King."

Graham raised an eyebrow slightly when Payton approached him, unsure of her motives and now suspicious of everything she did. He watched her closely, and tensed a little when she pushed some of his wet hair out his eyes and wiped his face. The princess's hands were warm against his now cool skin, and if he wasn't so annoyed with her, the sensation of her touch would be enjoyable. It was a simple, but intimate gesture on Payton's part, and the Prince wasn't sure how to react. Graham's eyes held Payton's though, and he made no movement to stop her, afraid rebuffing her attempts to help would just offend her more.

When she pulled her hands back down, Payton seemed to offer Graham a solution for him to avoid being seen looking like a drenched rat. The prince was curious as to what she meant, but he had little choice but to trust the Princess who was responsible for his dripping state to begin with. "How generous of you..." Graham replied, doing his best to curb some of his sarcasm. Payton taking his hand in hers was a surprisingly effective way to melt some of Graham's irritation, and he followed after her silently.

The princess's hand was so soft and small in his, but she held his firmly as she directed them to what looked to be a playhouse, tucked away in the garden. Graham ducked his head a little as they entered through the doorway that had likely been made for kids, and he glanced around at the interior. It was small, but private. Better than remaining in the garden where they were.

"I appreciate the offer, but I think I will refrain from wearing another future king's clothes." Graham replied, picturing the clothes being for kids based off the location. He slipped his hand away from hers and took a few steps away to peer around at the playhouse. The Prince avoided looking at Payton when she apologized for her actions, feeling ashamed for his response as well and not wanting her to see it.

"If I manage to dry off before anyone notices, then consider yourself forgiven." Graham replied, picking up a book that was sitting on a shelf and glancing it over, before setting it back down. "I don't imagine I'll be going near any other water features with you for a while though." He added, glancing over his shoulder to offer a small grin. His version of an olive branch.

"So, no one will find us here, right?" Graham asked, looking out the window of the small house and looking around for any passers by. Satisfied that they were alone in this section of the garden, Graham began unbuttoning his shirt. Once all of the buttons were freed, the Prince slipped his wet shirt off and hung it off the back of one of the little chairs to hang dry.

Danielle Camden

Danielle had to suppress an amused smile at Leo's frustration with his sputtering car. "It still runs, that's what counts..." She replied, moving her hand to rest at the nape of his neck as he pulled out of the driveway and headed for the grocery store. The princess absentmindedly played with the ends of Leo's short hair, running her fingers through it as she watched the scenery fly by through the window. This was her new neighborhood, and she loved it.

Glancing back towards Leo when he said he would be paying for the groceries, Danielle smiled with a sigh. "You really are too good to me... but I'm not complaining." She said, thankful for his generosity. "But cool, I think I can handle the cart. Can't be that hard." Dani laughed.

When Leo turned the radio on, Danielle hummed along with the tunes, not knowing the words but finding the commercial pop catchy. Usually the princess spent car rides prepping for whatever engagement she was heading to or catching up on sleep after a busy day. She'd never really had time to ask the driver to put music on, so this was another one of those "firsts".

The drive didn't take much time at all and Danielle's eyes lit up when Leo parked in front of the store. It was mid afternoon, so the store luckily wasn't too busy, with most people still at work or in school. As excited as Dani was to experience shopping like a regular person, she was still stepping out of her comfort zone and understandably a little nervous. It was sad that a grocery trip without an entourage of guards had her adrenaline going, but it did.

"Yes, I am." Danielle nodded, determined to be the best cart pusher that ever was. She leaned over and kissed Leo softly, enjoying their last moment of privacy, before hopping out of the Jeep. Looking around, Dani took a deep breath as she located where the carts were kept. For a moment Danielle instinctively waited for Leo to get out and come over to her, before she realized that she was free to move about without needing permission or someone to clear the area. Taking advantage of her new independence, Danielle made her way over to the carts on her own, taking one that was sitting alone outside of the collection.

Giving the cart a test push and pull, Danielle laughed a little, imagining what her father would think if he saw her right now. Caught up with the novelty of the moment, Danielle didn't realize she was completely blocking the other carts until a woman cleared her throat irritatedly. "You mind?" She asked impatiently, hurrying to get a cart the moment that Danielle embarrassedly moved out of the way. "So sorry..." The princess apologized quickly, her face flushing having never been spoken to like that before by a commoner.

Payton Camden

Living with two older siblings, Payton learned a thing or two about defending herself and trying to get the upper hand. It was hard to beat Philip. Ever since his early childhood, the boy was sharp as a tack and could outsmart both his sisters. Danielle had to think hard to turn situations in her favor and for Payton, it applied double times. No wonder she was outspoken and always wanted to have the last word. The only one she never dared to talk back to was her father.

Naturally, when Graham launched his shower of curses, Payton’s first idea was to turn his previous words against him. If she was a lady and was not supposed to use the foul language, he as the future king should have refrained as well. That much was more than obvious to her. Though what seemed like a great idea at first, was now everything but that. Graham was soaked in cold fountain water and apparently, angrier than Payton expected.

Neither of them anticipated the reaction when Payton’s small hands touched Graham’s face. The expression in her eyes softened and the smug smile disappeared from her face. It was replaced by a compassionate one that graced her features. A moment that in reality took a second or two seemed to last forever as her delicate fingers pushed wet strands of his hair away from his face. Payton had no idea if this was appropriate and maybe if servants saw them, they would definitely spread the rumors she was getting way too close to the Prince.

Their eyes held each other’s gaze this whole time and if he was not that annoying, she might even consider this a nice intimate moment between the engaged couple. Anyhow, she was not heartless and wouldn’t let him walk the walk of shame. And then there was this tiny selfish reason that she didn’t want her father to know what she had done to the guest.

When their hands touched, Payton felt a little electricity sting. Or maybe she made it up. One way or another, it somehow happened as she led him to the playhouse, her sanctuary, her safe haven. The whole place looked like from a family movie and it reflected everything a kid would need to have fun. Even the royal kid had right for ordinary moments in their childhood. The shelves were filled with books and board games, there were blankets and pillows galore for building forts and even a few pictures of the royal siblings as kids. And yes, there was even a fireplace. Tiny one, but it was there. Simply because Philip insisted and knew how to work it without burning down the whole place.

Payton also offered clothes but the order was denied. Other than that, she didn’t have a lot to give him here so she just walked to the other window and looked outside. “Up to you. But I promise I am not always like this. Only when provoked.” There was a mischievous glint in her eyes when he spoke about not going near water with her anymore. Payton turned her gaze away from Graham, glad that there was at least a hint of forgiveness for her.

And imagine her surprise when she turned back to look at him. Any words she was about to utter died in her throat, seeing the Prince half-naked there. Her face was becoming hotter and Payton felt her ears on fire. Despite her sharp tongue, she was rather innocent in the boy area and considering who she was and how she w as raised, she never really had any opportunities to find herself a boyfriend, let alone a long-term one. Intimacy was still a terra incognita for her and seeing Graham shirtless, looking even greater than before, she choked on her words alright.

“I’m…I’m gonna…fire…yeah, that….that should help.” she gulped and with a few long strides approached the small fireplace. As she knelt down, the hem of her white and blue dress hit the floor and was definitely not going to remain that blindingly clean but Payton didn’t mind. She threw a few pieces of wood and an old cardboard in the fireplace and her trembling fingers were trying to light the match. Anything to hide the fact how flustered she was from seeing a shirtless man who looked as amazing as Graham did. Poor girl was not even able to answer reply to anything he had said.

Leo Davenport

The old jeep was nothing special but no matter how much he cussed it over, he loved that vehicle. It was his first car he had bought and was determined to drive it until its very last day. It still ran, that was what counted, Danielle said it right. But Leo had a feeling that these might have been those last days of the car and maybe it was time to start thinking about getting a replacement. Not that Leo was that rich but they simply needed a car, living where they did.

Leo thought that it would feel a bit strange to be here, to play a mundane household with princess but it was everything but that. Danielle was adapting fast to everything he showed her, had her own adorable bucket list of things she wanted to try, like pushing a cart in the grocery store, things that never occurred to Leo as special. The two were going to learn a lot of things about each other and that was one of the most exciting parts of this cohabitation.

As they drove, the man felt her hand on the back of his neck and melted in her touch. It was so soft and tickled a bit. But not in that horrible way that he would have to squirm. It was rather pleasant and Leo enjoyed it, would let her do that for hours. It was simply amazing how comfortable they already were around each other. Sure, they had spent their little sneaky moments in the palace together but it was incomparable with what they had now.

As they arrived, Leo had to reassure she was ready and there was more behind his joking question that just whether she was ready for the cart. He wondered if she was ready for this life, for being out in public where there was always a chance someone would notice her. Even though masked by a baseball cap and large sun shades, the threat was always there and Leo was not going to risk anything.

Seeing Danielle walking towards the carts, pep in her step, determined as hell. He also noticed a little momentary hesitation before she started walking and chuckled under his breath. There was still a bit she needed to figure out but maybe needed to do so on her own. Leo didn’t want to hold her hand all the time and meant it well. Because he himself would be annoyed if someone tried to do it to him and Dani was smart enough to do it on her own.

Leo watched the scene from afar as he was walking towards her, seeing the lady growl at Danielle. The most adorable flush appeared on her face as she got out of the way and Leo had to chuckle. Again. Reaching her, his arm snaked around her shoulders and he steered her inside of the air conditioned building. “Think about anything you need to get, whatever you need or want, we can get it, okay?” he told her as they entered and headed straight towards the fruits and vegetables. He knew nothing about what a girl needed to function through the day and what she did or didn’t take from the palace. For now, he was focused on packing a few apples in a plastic bag and wondered what else they needed.

Strawberries! He definitely had to get them a pack of strawberries!

Graham Alton

"You're not always like this, huh?" Graham asked. "So how are you usually like? If I wasn't around to provoke you, that is." The prince asked, before striping off his wet shirt. Once he'd hung the garment on the back of the chair, he contemplated taking off his trousers, but Payton's expression stopped him.

To the Prince, being shirtless wasn't a big deal as long as he wasn't in public, so he didn't even think twice about discarding his soaking button up. However, that surprised look on the princess's face, paired with her flushed cheeks, told Graham that perhaps he had misjudged the situation. His intentions weren't to make Danielle uncomfortable, or seem forward. He'd only been hoping to speed up the drying process and stay warmer.

As Payton stumbled over her words, before deciding to go make a fire, Graham couldn't help but grin a little at how flustered she was. Danielle must not have had much experience with guys, though as a princess under close supervision that wasn't terribly surprising. It was amusing though. Graham had accidentally stumbled on a way to make Payton speechless, and he took note.

The prince's grin turned into a chuckle when he noticed her having a bit of trouble lighting the match, and he strode over to the fireplace. "Allow me..." Kneeling down beside Payton, Graham took the matches from her trembling fingers and easily lit a flame, before tossing it onto the wood in the fireplace. "I have every confidence that you would have been able to light the fire, but it is a bit drafty in here so I thought I'd speed up the process." He said, his gaze locking onto Payton's for a moment as they both crouched by the fire, inches away from each other.

The princess was extremely beautiful, and the flush on her cheeks was still present. Graham's thoughts returned to his earlier relief that at least he was attracted to his fiance. And while he wouldn't mind acting on the physical attraction later, now was not the time nor place. With a smirk, Graham broke the intimate moment, handing the box of matches back to Payton with a pat on her hand, and stood back up to his full height.

"Would you prefer I put my shirt back on?" He asked simply. "I don't want you to think I'm untoward." Graham added, watching Payton collect herself for a moment. He walked over to one of the small couches and grabbed a blanket off of it, wrapping it around his shoulders to help cover up some. He looked down at the stitching on the homemade blanket that read "Danielle" and glanced back up at Payton. "You don't mind, do you? If it's an heirloom, I can put it back." He said, starting to take it off just in case.

Danielle Camden

Danielle was a little flustered after her encounter with the impatient woman, and she was already starting to second guess her decision to push the cart. Apparently more could go wrong than she thought, and she wasn't sure she'd do too well if everyone was as crabby towards her as the woman was. The princess was accustomed to people being exceptionally kind towards her, so this was a foreign feeling, and she didn't like it. Was this how people were in real life when not in the presence of royalty?

Luckily Leo came to her rescue, and she turned to look up at him as his arm wrapped around her shoulder and he steered her inside. Danielle had been so determined to prove she could do things on her own, but that only backfired. Immediately. Maybe it was best to still stick close to Leo until she got her sea legs about her, so to speak. "Okay, I'll keep my eye out for things I need." Dani replied, not even really sure what all could be found in a grocery store. For now, she'd just tag along behind Leo and learn from him how things were supposed to be done.

Leo headed for the produce section, and Danielle followed closely behind him with the cart. It had a bad wheel, which was making it a bit difficult to steer, but she was managing. Well, almost. She did clip the edge of one of the displays, but no harm was done. Danielle glanced around at the fruits and vegetables, curious to see how some of them were packaged and sold. Leo grabbed a container of strawberries after putting some apples in the cart, and Danielle was shocked at how small the package was. In the palace, the kitchen ordered in bulk and whenever she snuck in for a midnight snack, there was always tons of food everywhere. But here at the market... well everything was sold in much smaller quantities.

"That's all you get?" The princess asked, surprised. "That won't last past a few days." She said, before frowning a little at a sudden realization. "Wait, how often do people go shopping? Is this like a weekly thing we have to do now?" Danielle asked, unable to fathom people spending their lives at the grocery store so often. So far she was not as big of a fan of shopping as she had imagined she'd be, mostly due to the unfortunate start, but this was the first thing in her new life that she was perhaps not going to like. On the other hand...

Danielle's eyes lit up when she spotted pineapples, and she pushed the cart over to the stand they were on. "Can we get one of these? Father is allergic to pineapple, so as a rule we never have any in the palace. I've only had some on vacation already cut up, but they just look so cute whole!" She said, picking one up and adding it to their groceries. Maybe the benefits outweighed the drawbacks, as Danielle was reminded of the freedom she now had to pick foods.

"What's your favorite fruit?" Danielle asked, realizing that she didn't really know about Leo's favorite, well, anything really. They'd talked about lots of things over the years, but never about the simple things. Or rather, Leo had never talked about the simple things. Or maybe Danielle had failed to bother asking before. A pang of guilt ran through Dani as it occurred to her that she'd not been as attentive to Leo's likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams as she had been about telling him her own. She'd been a little conceited in the past, but she would do better in the future. It would probably be good to know these kinds of things about the man she was now living with afterall.

"And what's your favorite vegetable? Any that you don't like?" Danielle asked, tempted to dive into 20 questions, but refraining for now. There would be plenty of time later to attack him with a barrage of inquiries. She pushed the cart along behind Leo as he grabbed a few other items from the produce section, dropping them into the cart, before heading to the next section.

Payton Camden

Payton’s experience with men was not vast. Actually, it was almost none at all. The girl had her dreams and ideas of course. In her free time, the private time only for her, she kept watching all those saccharine Netflix rom coms, read cheesy novels and imagined how it would look like on the day she met her prince Charming. Her imagination was definitely great and she already assembled her wedding book. No one knew about it, it laid buried on the bottom of her closet and only when Payton was sure she was alone and no one would be coming, she went there and turned the pages in the thick flowery binder, her fingertips traced pages with wedding dresses and samples of fabric, she drooled over pictures of wedding cakes and closed her eyes to see all those beautiful venues where a wedding could take place.

But except daydreaming, she had no idea how it felt to feel the warmth of a man by her side. Once, once she was kissed and was pretty sure that was not how it was supposed to feel. It was one of those everlasting royal parties her father occasionally threw and he was a son of one of the Dukes. Cute as hell, too and Payton was excited beyond belief when the two of them got lost in the hedge maze of the royal garden, hidden from the prying eyes of everyone else. Her heart fluttered when he pulled her closer and captured her lips with his. And that was all that was exciting about it. The kiss itself felt horribly wet, there was too much tongue and overall, Payton hated it. She ran from that maze like her ass was on fire, you can believe her that much.

And since this was the only intimate experience she had with boys, seeing a half naked prince, her future husband positively flustered her and the princess, kneeling by the fireplace, was barely able to light up the match. Poor Payton was sharp as a tack but this was not a situation she was taught to handle. And when Graham approached her, knelt down beside her, she saw him from up close, eyes sliding over his body, the stripes of muscles on his chest and stomach and Payton had to say she was seriously impressed with his physique. Graham was an attractive man and she found herself in desire to touch his skin.

A flock of butterflies erupted in her stomach when he took the matches from her and lit the fire up easily. But it was nothing compared to what it felt like when his hand covered hers in a gentle pat. She was sure it was a result of her inexperience and sudden proximity wit a man who looked like carved from the most perfect piece of marble. “Thank you…” she half-whispered and watched him some more, basically until he stood back up. Only then she blinked her daydream away and exhaled quietly. Come on, Payton, put yourself together.

With the heart pounding against her ribcage, Payton followed his example and finally took the annoying hat off. Stupid etiquette. Payton hated it for sure and she wished she didn’t have to follow all those rules and principles. Taking the hat off was not exactly acceptable but considering she already wore the wrong dress and Graham’s shirt hung from a nearby chair, to hell with etiquette at this point.

“Hm? Oh, uh…no, no, it’s alright, you can have that. Sh-um, I don’t mind.” she stuttered fast, hoping beyond hope Graham was not suspicious already or anything. Being Danielle was harder than Payton thought and not because she didn’t know how to play her, but because she kept forgetting to be her.

“Okay, so, umm…are you sure I can’t get you any fresh clothes? Philip doesn’t come here anymore but you are probably the same size. It could take too long for your shirt to dry up, you know.” Payton suggested and sat down on the couch, crossing her legs elegantly. Her first instinct was to kick the shoes away and folded her legs underneath her but that would be just another misstep and she really couldn’t afford any more of those. “I really just meant it as a good fun. Never knew it could make you so angry. You seem like you never really joke around. Which seems a pity. Why is that?”

Leo Davenport

The real world was going to be difficult for Danielle and Leo could see it. He pretended not to see her little encounter with the woman and didn’t say anything about it. Dani didn’t need to hear that. Instead, he just pulled her closer and let her push the cute little cart in front of her. Apparently, the high ponytail and an old scrappy baseball cap were enough to mask the popular princess. If everything was going to be this easy, Leonard would be glad. But they also had to assume that for now, the palace had no idea she was gone and something was telling him that they had the little princess to thank to. Making a mental note to figure out a way how to contact Payton, the two entered the store.

It was yet another wonderland for the girl, Leo imagined. Her shopping was done for her, she never contributed to any of it and all she did with food was eat it. Leo was actually incredibly proud that he was the one that got to teach or ordinary world ways. He told her to get anything she needed or wanted and the couple dove in the world of grocery shopping. Leo had his mental shopping list drawn in his head but his eyes kept flicking around to make sure he wouldn’t miss any good deal or some kind of delicacy to get for his lady.

As the former bodyguard put a few things in the cart, Danielle spoke up and her words made him laugh genuinely. Realizing that his reaction might not have been the best, he approached her, cupped her face and kissed her deeply. “You are so adorable, you know that?” he spoke and looked down at her tiny form. “It’s up to us how many times we want to come. No rules, doll. But possibly twice a week. We can get stuff for a few days now and then we come again in a few days. No worries, okay?” he kissed her forehead and reached for a strawberry, bringing it to her lips. “See? No rules.” he winked and fed her the rest of the sweet fruit, making sure no one saw them.

He let her roam a little and put anything she liked to the cart. Her fascination with pineapple made him chuckle again and he nodded. Of course, they could. He would buy her the whole world if she said so. When the waterfall of questions came, Leo thought about it. There was a fair point in her words and Leo also realized that they had spent significant time making out, cuddling and being cute with each other but there was never a real talk. And honestly, there was no time like today.

“Berries. Any of them. That’s definitely my favorite. As for veggies, I…tolerate them. Not big on veggies but I’ll eat them. Except the green ones, that’s gross and I refuse to eat broccoli or any leafy shit.” Leo laughed and glared at spinach nearby. Once he had quite a few items in the cart, they moved on to the pastry part of the shop. His mom always baked bread but since Leo was a cook cook but not that good, he was going to buy some. “Take a look around and pick whatever catches your eye. This place might not be a huge commercial supermarket but the do have the best pastries around.” he told her and grabbed a few things as well, before heading towards the scones shelf. That was his guilty pleasure and the reason he worked out. No matter what they said, dad belly was not something he wanted to grow. Not yet at least.

Graham Alton

Prince Graham could feel Payton's eyes slide over his body, and he resisted the urge to flex a little to see what kind of reaction he could get out of her if she knew she'd been caught ogling him. Not that Payton's curious gaze could quite be considered ogling, and not that Graham minded it. Kneeling beside the flushed princess was quite enough to fluster her, and Graham didn't want to be cruel now that he'd discovered how innocent she was in certain matters.

"My pleasure..." Graham replied simply, his smirk was playful rather than mean as he stood back up. Giving Payton some space to recover, Graham pulled the blanket around him to help make the Princess he believed to be Danielle, more comfortable. She stuttered for a moment when he asked if it was okay to use her blanket, and for a moment it sounded like Danielle was about to say "she" instead of "I". Thinking that perhaps he had misread the name sewn onto the blanket, Graham checked again, but it definitely read "Danielle". Chalking the slip of the tongue up to Payton being tongue tied by his half-naked state, Graham didn't dwell on it.

When Payton offered Graham her brother's clothes again, he glanced down at his wet pants, contemplating taking her up on the offer. It was a kind gesture, but Graham couldn't help but want to see if he could make his fiance blush again. "You seem to be really keen on getting me out of my pants... But I promised your father I wouldn't do anything untoward while alone with you." He replied, shooting her a teasing grin. "If you really do desire me to change, then I will comply."

Graham watched Payton as she took a seat on the couch, her hair now free of the tea hat she'd been wearing earlier. The prince much preferred her without the ridiculous ornament that women seemed to find so fashionable. Whoever had deemed wearing such silly hats to be "proper" must have had it out for women and sought to make them look like birds.

Graham laughed a little at Payton's assertion that she had allowed him to be soaked by the fountain for fun. "Good fun, you say? So it wasn't in an attempt to even the score?" He mused, raising an eyebrow. "I imagine you wouldn't have been very happy either had the tables been turned." Graham pointed out with a shrug. "It's not like I never joke around... There just isn't much time for it when you're expected to rule a country as King."

Graham strode back over to the fire, standing near the flames in an attempt to speed up the drying of his pants. "Besides, I've never seen "able to take a joke" as one of the listed qualities of a good king. I'm expected to be serious, and intelligent, and steadfast... not funny, or a jokester." He continued, his gaze set on the fire as he spoke. "Your father filters the adrenaline rushes out of your life... just as my position as future king has filtered out certain aspects of mine... I suppose that is why Kings used to hire court jesters back in the day. To make up for the lack of humor in their own lives." He said, frowning a little as he thought about what his future held.

Graham hadn't meant for the conversation to nose dive into such serious territory, but he was being honest with his future bride. If she wanted someone who was a goofball, he surely wasn't it, nor did he want to give her false hope that she could find it in him. Glancing back over at Payton, Graham gave another shrug and offered a small smile. "Or maybe I was just born without a funny bone..." He joked poorly.

Danielle Camden

Leo's laughter when Danielle asked how often people went shopping made the princess pout a little, feeling like she must have asked a stupid question. But her pout quickly disappeared when he walked over and kissed her in the middle of the produce section. In public, where anyone could see them! This was a foreign experience for Danielle, though it was actually quite thrilling.

Before, the princess had hardly trusted herself to look at Leo or talk to him when they were in public, fearing that her longing glances or playful banter would give their secret relationship away. All of their stolen kisses had to be private, away from prying eyes. Only Payton had ever accidentally seen them kiss. And now... Now as Danielle leaned into Leo's kiss, returning it just as deeply, they were out in the open for all the old ladies and housewives who passed by to see. Public displays of affection had never been an option for Danielle and Leo before, but now that they were free of the constraints, PDA was actually a bit of an adrenaline rush for the princess.

Blushing when Leo broke the kiss to speak, she laughed a little bit, feeling like a rebel. Nodding, she accepted that shopping would become a common occurrence in their lives. Her eyes widened a little when Leo brought the strawberry up to her lips, a mirthful expression playing on her features as she took a bite. She still wasn't accustomed to how shopping worked, but even if Leo said there were no rules, she still felt like this was breaking them a bit. She quickly finished the strawberry and glanced around to make sure no one saw her.

"Quite a troublemaker, huh?" Danielle mused, glancing up at Leo. Other than the rule breaking that he and Danielle did together, she'd really only seen the straight-laced Leo. It was nice seeing him relaxed and playful now though. Maybe shopping wasn't so bad afterall.

Danielle took careful mental note when Leo said that berries were his favorite, and that he didn't particularly like veggies. And definitely no broccoli or spinach. Danielle laughed lightly as she pushed the cart along behind Leo. "So when it comes to vegetables, I should just assume that if a child wouldn't eat it, you won't either?" Dani teased gently as she followed Leo into the pastry section. Not that she had much knowledge of what children ate to begin with.

The baked goods smelled wonderful, and it was hard for Danielle not to just add one of everything in the cart to try it. She watched as Leo beelined towards the scones with a content smile, pinching herself to make sure that this hadn't been one long dream. Nope, it was real. As hard as it was to believe, Dani had finally made a decision for herself and put her happiness above the needs of the kingdom. The guilt was sure to follow at a later time, especially when Danielle would eventually learn of her sister's sacrifice, but for now she was just enjoying the bliss and simplicity of things.

Picking out some croissants and a container of assorted cookies, Danielle added them to the cart before pushing it over to join Leo. "I wouldn't have pegged you for having a sweet tooth." She mused thoughtfully, gazing up at the man she'd left her world behind for. She made another mental note that if she ever wanted to dote on Leo, scones were an option. "Did your parents spoil you as a kid with tasty treats?" Danielle asked, curious about Leo as a child since she compared him to one a few moments earlier. "Or were you the type to fall asleep at the table rather than finish the food off your plate?"

Payton Camden

Payton hated how she got. Nothing could ever shake her courageous demeanor and she always had an answer for everything. Sarcasm could be her second language because she was definitely fluent speaker. And yet, here she was, looking at a man without his shirt and her English betrayed her completely. The redhead really needed to fish for words and it was a difficult task, more difficult than she would ever imagine. Even her bubbly personality was undergoing the most difficult test here.

Graham was a whole package if she was honest. Not only devilishly attractive and apparently well-built, he also knew how to throw a joke. Though at this point, Payton was the target. But if she just bit her tongue and got over it, she could see them getting along just fine. Even more so. Maybe Danielle was not thrilled but that was understandable. She already had a man who brought wild flocks of butterflies to her stomach. She didn’t need to get excited about a prince and Graham was basically an obstacle in her happiness. But Payton, she was never actually in love, she never had a real boyfriend and now she chose to walk this way so basically, Graham was her only chance. Could they ever get past this unfortunate arrangement and actually see each other for who they really were?

“Good fun, to even the score…can’t it be both?” she asked and found that Dani’s old blanket was actually helping her to restore the balance. Not that she did not enjoy the look of Graham being half naked here, because the look was more than enjoyable, but it also flushed her with such strong blush that Payton was ashamed of herself for being so obvious. But the next direction of the conversation made her really sad if she was being honest. Graham was right, her father really was out there to tame her and not allow her to do a lot of things that Payton would find entertaining. But did being a royal really mean they couldn’t ever have fun?

As Graham moved to the fire, Payton shifted in her seat to still see him properly. His shirt was hanging from a chair and she stood up to move it closer to the fireplace as well, standing by Graham’s side. “I might be nothing but a simple girl. And correct me if I’m wrong, I was never raised as a future ruler. But to me, there is no character sheet for who the King needs to be or what kind of personality he needs to have.” she spoke quietly and looked at Graham, tilting her head back since he was much taller. “I think the King should be here for the people and be a part of his nation. And once he is one with his people, then it really doesn’t matter if he is a jokester or not. Plus, no one will ever see you behind the walls of the palace. Honestly, life without jokes and fun seems incredibly sad. Then again, it’s mostly up to you what kind of person you choose to be, the King or not.” Payton shrugged and approached an old cupboard.

It might have been true that the siblings were not using this place anymore. But it didn’t mean that Payton was not coming back here every now and then. And she was ready for those visits more than anyone would know. This little thing was her secret and as a princess, she was not supposed to do any of this. Payton never told about this to anyone, not even Danielle. Any she didn’t know if Graham knew about this little snack. But after a while of rumbling, she pulled three different packs from the cupboard and set them down to the fireplace, sitting there herself. Her initial embarrassment was finally gone and she decided to spend the time with snacking, rather than waiting. “I have graham crackers.” she winked at the prince and opened the pack. “Sit down, don’t loom over me. Let me envelope you in a little Payton fun.” she chirped and forgot herself a bit.

The second those words left her lips, Payton almost fainted. “My sister taught me this, I would never know myself.” she added quickly, thankful for her ability to think on her feet. She then opened a pack of marshmallows and put one of them on the skewer, holding it over a flame for a moment until it was nice golden brown. A small smile appeared on her lips as she put a piece of chocolate on a cracker and used another one to add a gooey marshmallow. The little sandwich was rather messy and sticky but it was a proper s’more. Payton handed it to Graham with a smile. “I won’t tell anyone you had a little fun here. Your secret is safe with me.”

After all those times Leo had to watch Danielle from a certain distance, after all the time he couldn’t just sweep her in his arms and carry her away from the prying eyes, after months and years of guarding his face to make sure his expression was not longing or full of desire for the beautiful redhead, the fact that he could now come to her and kiss her in the middle of a supermarket was so refreshing that Leo just wanted to stay among fruits and veggies and kiss her for hours. So far, this was definitely the best part of their reckless, spontaneous plan. They were free of all rules and limitations of the palace and Leo was planning on exploiting it as much as he could.

He could see how she looked around after eating that strawberry, musing a small smile. “Chill, love. No one saw you.” he winked and popped another strawberry himself, tempting the fate. And he simply wanted to see the person who was going to tell him off for it. He was shopping with his girl, showing his princess around. No one was going to ruin this day for him. Let them try, he would fight them off with his bare hands. “I will always be a troublemaker, remember that.” he grinned as they moved on.

As they talked about what he liked and disliked, Leo felt obliged to admit his strong hate towards the green veggies. And Dani had a really adorable remark on that. “Whatever made you think I’m not a child?” he snickered as he pulled her closer to him, unable to let go of her even for a little while. She was his drug and he was positively addicted.

Thinking about veggies thought brought his mind back home. To his mom’s kitchen, to the table, to his father being angry with him for not eating his broccoli, his mom trying to convince him to give the green abomination a chance. But little Leo was adamant, his mouth would never touch it. So mom tried other stuff. Spinach, asparagus, even cucumbers. Nope. Leo wouldn’t eat it if it was green. Except peas and green bell peppers, all green stuff was out of the questions. And thinking about his parents brought him also to thinking about when would be the next time he saw them. He could see his father’s disappointed look already when he was going to find out what Leo had done. And mom would be sad. So very very sad. And yet, Leo was never happier in his life than now, walking across the grocery store with Danielle

The sweet smell coming from the racks of the small bakery lured them closer and he let Danielle roam free for a moment while he went to fill his paper bag with scones, taking one of each kind. Blueberry, chocolate, apricot, cheese, you name it. Leo was not ashamed to pig out on those and he was very well going to do that later that day. Possibly even in bed because that was the best place to eat those.

Once he was done with his sweet frenzy shopping, he added the bag to the cart and looked at what she got, smiling widely. “I would think so about you either and yet…cookies are your poison? Do we need to get more of those?” Leo teased her and grabbed a box of breadsticks as well. “What is it you love the most in the world and could eat over and over again?” he asked all of a sudden as they moved on deeper to the shop. It was a sneaky question. He was really interested in that plus he wanted to have some sort of secret weapon, something to always have at hand if she was mad or sad or homesick. Or if he just wanted to make her smile even wider.

Graham Alton

Graham listened to Payton as she stood beside him by the fire, speaking about her belief of what a king should be. Her ideals were charming, but not necessarily realistic. Not in Graham's world and upbringing at least. Sure, in times of peace perhaps a King could loosen up a little bit, but if he was one with the people, then it was a slippery slope before they soon saw him more as a friend of the people and less as a leader. Even if he wanted to immerse himself in the daily lives of his subjects, Graham couldn't. He needed to maintain his authority. Payton's view was sweet and naive and something out of a storybook, but this was reality. God forbid if they went to war, the King needed to be a strong, firm leader who the people trusted to protect the country and soldiers. A jokester for a king was hardly who they would want to see lead North Astoria's forces.

Rather than argue with Payton and delve deeper into what was expected of him, Graham decided it was better for whatever progress they were making towards not disliking each other if he allowed the subject to change without his commentary. Princess Danielle would learn soon enough the new responsibilities and expectations that came with being in line to be a ruler. She may have lived a controlled life so far, but that was before she was arranged to become queen. Life was only going to become even more micromanaged after they were married. If the princess hadn't been told by her father or even brother what lay before her, Graham certainly didn't want to be the one to.

"I think you will have a lot to learn once we are married Danielle..." The prince replied simply. He may have gotten some pleasure pointing out his fiance's mistakes earlier, but he would get no pleasure out of telling her he thought she was wrong now.

Graham watched her move over to a cupboard and pull out some snacks. He raised his eyebrow when she winked mentioning she had graham crackers, slightly amused at the name of her snack of choice. Fitting. Complying when Payton asked him not to loom over her, he knelt down beside her. His brows furrowed for a moment when she mentioned Payton. The way she said it made it sound like she was referring to herself, but the princess was quick to clarify what she meant.

"Sounds like your sister got the better end of the deal if she has the luxury of enjoying childish snacks." Graham mused, watching the young woman he believed to be Danielle cook the marshmallow. The prince had only had the tasty treat once before, when his uncle took him along on a camping trip to teach Graham survival in the woods in case the future king ever found himself in a bind. That trip had been one of the most gruelling experiences the then thirteen year old had experienced so far in life, but on the last night his uncle surprised him with a reward. Graham ended up eating so many s'mores that night he almost made himself sick, but it was a fond memory with his uncle. And now, perhaps, it would be one of his first fond memories with his fiance.

Graham reached over and accepted the s'more that Payton had prepared for him. "Thank you..." He replied, a small smile on his face. The conversation had taken a serious turn earlier, but the prince was beginning to allow himself to relax again slowly. He laughed a little when the princess said the secret that he'd had fun was safe with her. "Fun, eh? Is that what you'd say we are having right now?" Graham asked with a slight grin. "The way you make me sound, I would think it entirely impossible for me to be associated with any such thing."

The polite thing to do would of course have been to wait for the princess to finish making her own s'more before eating his, and had they been eating something else, Graham would have waited. But, a smore was at its best while still warm, so the prince indulged himself with a bite of the treat. Rather instantly he was reminded of how messy the marshmallow snack was and found himself with sticky fingers but no napkin. Oh well, when in Rome...

As Payton began roasting a second marshmallow, Graham picked up another skewer and stuck a marshmallow on the end of it. He appreciated Payton making his first one, but there was no way he was going to make her cook all of them by herself. He may have been a bit rusty, but making s'mores thankfully wasn't all that complicated.

"So, if you're going to be keeping a secret for me that I had fun here... I suppose it's only fair for you to entrust me with a secret..." Graham proposed, holding his skewer over the fire. "What is it that people say? There are no secrets between married couples..."

Danielle Camden

Dani's hazel eyes widened a little as Leo proved his point that there were no rules by eating another strawberry, and she laughed lightly when he declared he'd always be a troublemaker. She quite liked the sound of that. "Who knew the grocery store would bring this side out of you..." She mused, blushing slightly when he pulled her closer to him again. She quite liked the feeling of that, too.

"Well, going off your appearance at least, Leo, I'd say you were far from a child..." Danielle pointed out when he asked what made her think he wasn't a child. "And the fact that you are typically on alert, ready to take out any threats seems rather more manly than childish..." She teased, leaning into him a little. "But, I don't mind getting to know your more silly side." The princess added as they moved onto the baked goods section.

Danielle was let loose to grab whatever she wanted, and she laughed when she put her cookies into the cart and Leo used her comment against her. "Okay, you've caught me, cookies are my weakness." She admitted, smiling guiltily. Dani bit her lip, considering Leo's question about what her favorite food in the world was. "Well, excluding grilled cheeses which have worked their way high up on the list today..." She began with a smile, "I'd have to say... those ice cream sandwiches that have ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies." Danielle finally decided. "Or strawberry shortcake! Or pizza! Though admittedly, I've only had all of these a few times, so I don't know if I could eat them over and over again... yet." The princess admitted with a light laugh, taking her spot back behind the cart and pushing it towards the next area.

"What about you? Strawberries, or any berry, are your favorite fruit... but what about food? If you wanted me to learn to cook one thing really well, what would it be?" Danielle asked, glancing up at the man who she'd really attempt to cook anything for. It might not come out well... but she'd sure as hell try for him.

The pair moved up and down a few aisles, with Leo adding most of the grocery items to the cart and Dani grabbing something every now and then. In one of the aisles a little girl kept staring at Danielle, and she was terrified that her identity was about to be revealed.

"Pwincess!" The little girl giggled, trying to get her mother's attention as she pointed at Danielle. The redhead's heart nearly stopped when she heard the word come out of the child's mouth, and she quickly turned away, using Leo as a shield. Only hours into her new life and Danielle could already see her happiness being taken away in the blink of an eye. A wave of nausea passed over her as she waited to see if her dreams were about to be crushed.

Luckily, the mother was busy trying to get things on her grocery list and likely used to her daughter babbling on about silly things. "Mmhmm honey, I'm sure she is pretty like a princess..." The mother simply said without even a glance at Dani, appeasing her child before moving to another aisle.

Danielle let out a breath of relief when the woman and observant child took their leave, slumping against Leo a little. That was too close. "Does this store sell hair dye?" She asked, a little crestfallen at the thought, but now convinced that it was necessary. She would do whatever was necessary to keep her new life with Leo.

Payton Camden

Though Payton was never expected to lead the country one day, one way or another, whether is the ruler or marrying a king, she knew a thing or two as she had gotten the same lessons as Danielle. Her father found his youngest daughter way too free-spirited, to put it mildly, to run around and just be her usual gleeful self so he decided to put her in lessons to learn how to behave like a proper little lady. To say that Payton was not exactly excited would be an understatement. She spent a lot of them daydreaming and doodling, decorating most of her notebooks with hearts, stars and various pictures instead of listening to boring etiquette classes. What she enjoyed were dance classes, that was fun. She got to dance with a cute boy and it actually didn’t require memorizing quantum of information.

Maybe this attitude of hers woke up her belief that the King should not be just a serious figure over his subjects. Payton couldn’t say for sure and maybe it was her childish fairy tale belief but how could someone be truly happy in life, King or not, if they didn’t have fun? If they refused to loosen up? This was truly incomprehensible to Payton but she surely didn’t want to start another controversial discussion when they finally managed to stop fighting and just talk. She even overcame her initial shyness and wasn’t madly blushing when Graham came closer without his shirt covering his upper body.

Instead, she just decided to be her usual self. At least a little bit. Being Dani was hard and it required a lot of focus. But if this was going to work, Payton needed to bring in a little bit of herself. Danielle was a beautiful person but Payton could never pull it off completely and definitely not forever. Hence the little s’mores stunt. And the graham cracker joke. And no, Payton never showed this to any of her siblings, or at least she didn’t remember doing this with them because the youngest princess kept coming to the playhouse even when her siblings did not. She just sat here, wrapped in her own blanket, read a book or doodled or just thought back when this used to be the invincible fortress of three royal children. Sometimes she wished they could all go back to those days. Everything was far easier back then.

Oh, well, but that was not possible, right? So Payton decided to make it at least a bit more pleasant with her little s’mores party. “She probably did.” she then replied to Graham’s comment. Not that the youngest princess could objectively judge that. “She was never tasked with anything really, no kingdom to rule, no prince to marry…” she stopped and looked at Graham. “Not that I mean it bad, you know. But yes, Payton might just be the luckiest out of us.” she smiled, trying to hide that little piece of sadness shading her voice.

As she handed him that sticky goodness and made one for herself, Payton then set the skewer down and bit into her piece, immediately staining her lips with the melted marshmallow. “Isn’t it though? Because I have to say that despite the beginning of this meeting, this is quite pleasant. You might not be as stuck up royal brat as I thought you were.” Payton smiled, testing the boundaries, trying to see how relaxed the prince had become.

As they were sitting there next to each other, roasting marshmallows, Payton started to feel comfortable. At some point, she even shamelessly lost her heels, assuming that since he was already shirtless, there were not really many taboos here. But when he asked her about a secret, to tell him something, to trust him, her stomach somersaulted. She could… No. No way, she couldn’t. It would cause a huge scandal and…no. Instead, she started to wreck her brain about a secret that was harmless enough to tell him and wouldn’t compromise anything. Only to come up with one in the end.

“Well…if you must know. I am already married.” Payton spoke up after a moment, keeping her face straight and serious. “I got married around fifteen years ago. His name is Fred and he solves mysteries with his friends and the most perfect dog. You might know the doggo though. Have you ever heard about Scooby-Doo?” she asked, biting the inside of her cheek to keep her expression serious. “It was a small ceremony, me and him and all my stuffed animals. Very private. And we kept it a secret ever since.” And at that point, she couldn’t hold it, she had to laugh. The whole idea was pretty goofy and she was just kidding but maybe that was needed here. A little but of silly humor to distract them from the bigger issue.

“Which side?” Leo asked, pretending not knowing what Danielle was talking about for a while. “But yeah, no. It’s not the grocery store. It’s more like…the company.” he winked at the redhead by his side as they walked on. “And maybe yes, you saw the working side of me most of the time, a serious bodyguard ready to jump in front of his princess in case of any threat. Now? I’m still very much ready to do it but I can also relax. There are no rules, no conventions binding us anymore and we don’t have to walk on nails, keep the official smiles and tame the passion. We can finally allow ourselves to enjoy life the way we want to.” Leo smiled, holding Danielle closer. “But I will gladly show you my silly side. Brace yourself, you might beg me to go back to my serious boring self.” he laughed and tickled her a little as they walked on.

When he asked her what she could eat over and over again, it was not only because he was interested for real but also strategic. She wanted to know what he should get her or what to have at hand if she was sad or mad, if she was in munchie mood, hungry or just wanted a quick snack. “I will make you a grilled cheese anytime. You just say so. Or even better, I’ll teach you how to make one and then you can make them for me and serve them in bed and it’s going to be a win win.” Leo laughed, setting his hand on the small of Danielle’s back as they walked on.

Upon he question about his favorite food, Leo had to think. He was a keen eater and was not extremely picky. Only with his veggies. “Hmm, honestly, I would totally love anything you’d make, I think. No, wait…I have something. Chicken and waffles. With this spicy honey butter sauce my mom makes. She drizzles is all over the serving and it is wet and sticky and makes you all dirty but I love it.” Leo spoke in a little bit of dreamy voice, imagining his favorite food. “It was what I was always eating as a child, the greatest comfort food. Whenever I was sad, my mom would make chicken and waffles and I always cheered up. So if you ever make those for me, I’ll never let you go.” With that, Leo just leaned closer and kissed Danielle’s temple as they walked as he couldn’t get enough of her. He was drunk on the feeling that they were finally free to show their love and those little affections.

As they walked across the store, he filled the cart with quite a few things and even sneaked in a few ice cream sandwiches when she wasn’t looking. He already had an idea for the dinner but for now, that was going to remain a secret for her. But Leo definitely wanted to start their new adventure in a way she would never forget. He wanted Dani to be happy and never regret her decision to run away wit her bodyguard.

Leo missed the little encounter with the girl as he was too interested in the pasta shelf. Only when Dani tucked closer to him, he looked down at her, eyes full of curiosity what was going on. And it was her question that saddened his eyes visibly. “Hair dye?” he asked at first but then it clicked and he sighed. “Of course. Come on.” And he took her hand, laced their fingers together and led her to the drugstore part of the store where she could choose whichever color she wanted. Leo was aware how much Danielle loved her red locks and honestly, he loved them too. It was her significant feature, one of the things that made Dani Dani and losing them felt as if she was losing a bit of herself. Leo appreciated this sacrifice so much. “I promise, Dani, I promise you’ll get them back.” he whispered in her hair as he pulled her closer and kissed the top of her head as if he was already saying goodbye to her fire-kissed crown.

Once she had her dye picked up, Leo headed straight to the checkout where he threw a few more snacks in the cart. He proceeded to put their shopping on the belt, making a quiet recap in his head whether they truly got all they needed. “You got everything you wanted, hun?” he asked Danielle as he motioned to her to walk past him and put the shopping away to the large paper bags. “I mean, we can always come back but since we here, you know.” he shrugged and grabbed another paper bag to help her with packing.

Graham Alton

Graham studied the princess for a moment as she spoke about her younger sister having things a bit easier in life. He hadn't known the fiery redhead very long, but although she smiled, her voice didn't sound quite as happy. The prince interpreted this as perhaps a bit of envy that the youngest princess of South Astoria did not have the pressure of an arranged marriage. "No offense taken..." Graham assured her, knowing very well that their situation wasn't ideal, for either of them.

Graham didn't have much time for courting young women, but he had managed to squeeze in the occasional fling here and there with a lady of high birth. The plan hadn't always been for him to marry the Princess of North Astoria's sister country, and he had once entertained the notion of marrying for love. Eventually. Had the arrangement for the impending nuptials not been made, it likely would have been at least a handful of years before Graham truly considered settling down with someone. But now... his days of being single were numbered. If Princess Danielle envied her sister, Graham did not fault her. For he too envied his younger siblings.

Graham turned his attention to eating the s'more, and despite their forced relationship, the moment felt almost natural. A small smile tugged on Graham's mouth when Payton admitted that this was pleasant, unable to disagree at the moment. The smile quickly turned into a bit of a scowl though when the princess indirectly called the future king a stuck up royal brat, but he understood that she was just trying to provoke him. "And you might not be as... troublesome as I thought you were." Graham countered, smirking.

Initially, based on his research, Graham had actually thought that Princess Danielle might be too prim and proper, but only a few minutes into the luncheon he'd come to the conclusion that Danielle must have just done a good job keeping her image clean in the public eye. For in private, there had been little prim and proper about their meeting so far. In truth, very little of his research seemed to be panning out, Graham thought as he watched the princess beside him kick off her heels. His eyes rose to watch her eyes as they seemed far away while she considered a response to his request for her to share a secret. All the pictures of the princess had made her eyes appear darker, more hazel... But here, even in the dimmer light of the playhouse, the princess's eyes were still very much blue. As blue as the sky outside.

Finally, her eyes met Graham's gaze again as she settled on something suitable to share with the prince, and Graham pulled out his marshmallow so he didn't burn it while listening. Upon hearing that Danielle was already married, Graham cocked a confused eyebrow. The princess continued explaining the context of her current marriage, and as Graham began to realize she was joking, his raised brow lowered and he bit into his marshmallow with an amused expression. The redhead's commitment to keeping a serious face was commendable, but didn't last long.

The princess's laughter danced around the small playhouse, and Graham offered a small chuckle. "Well... While it is hard to compete with such a man as Fred... I'm not sure your marriage holds up in the court of law. I believe there's something about your witnesses and officiant not being allowed to be stuffed..." He teased after swallowing his treat. "So are you still such an avid Scooby Doo fan? Or has the phase passed?" He asked, licking a bit of marshmallow from his thumb before wiping his hands on his pants.

The slacks were beginning to dry in some places now, aided by the heat of the fire, and Graham rotated a little where he knelt to start drying the other side. While he was actually enjoying himself more than he believed possible, it would only be a matter of time before someone came looking for him or the princess. By that time, Graham hoped he'd be dressed once again to prevent any rumors from needlessly spreading.

"Admittedly, I was never much of a TV person. I preferred to read. Was something I could do anywhere, and easier to hide while doing. The nannies always knew where to find my brother since he was always glued to the television when he wasn't in school." Graham said, looking around the playroom for a moment, before back to Payton. "We were not lucky enough to have anything like this built for us to escape too. My sister would have loved this when she was little though."

Danielle Camden

Danielle smiled brightly as Leo spoke about no longer having to obey and rules or tiptoe around how they felt about each other. The princess let out a surprised squeal of laughter when Leo tickled her for a moment, squirming a bit til he ceased. "I don't think you were ever boring Leo..." Danielle replied sincerely, glancing up at him as they walked. "Serious at times, yes, but not boring. And I don't think I'd ever beg you to be any different than you want to be." She added, looking back ahead just in time to avoid pushing the cart into a display.

Being in charge of the cart wasn't difficult... except when in the presence of an attractive man that Danielle was finally able to admire openly. The princess made a mental note to pay more attention to where she was going, not wanting to draw any unnecessary attention to the two of them by causing a scene or a mess with the cart.

Leo's offer to make her a grilled cheese whenever she wanted brought a smile to Danielle's face as she recalled the warm, deliciously cheesy delite. But Leo's comment about her making them for him and serving them in bed made her quirk and eyebrow a little. "Oh, bedside service, huh?" She asked with a smirk. "You planning to sleep in then? Or do you eat grilled cheeses for breakfast?" Danielle inquired, teasingly.

When Leo shared that his favorite food was chicken and waffles, at first Danielle thought he was joking. "Chicken and waffles? Okay, I might not know that much about comfort foods, but that cannot be a real dish..." She replied, not wanting Leo to think he could pull one over on her. But when she looked up at him, his expression was serious and he continued talking about how his mother made it. The dreamy tone of Leo's voice was enough to convince Danielle that this dish actually did exist, and that learning it would be critical. Especially since Leo said it made him feel better when he was sad.

Danielle smiled softly when Leo kissed her forehead, but inside her heart broke a little bit as she was reminded of another side effect of running away. It would likely be a long time before Leo would get to see his parents again or eat his mother's chicken and waffles that he loved so much. The princess would do her very best to learn the same recipe, but she imagined that she had some big shoes to fill when it came to Leo's mother's cooking. If Leo was sad now, the best he would get would be Danielle's novice attempt at cooking. What if her chicken and waffles were so bad it only made Leo sadder?

The princess shook the thought away, not wanting to start regretting her decision so soon, in the middle of the grocery store. Though it wasn't so much that she regretted the decision, but rather felt guilty for the sacrifices it would require from Leo. As they shopped, the encounter with the little girl chased away all thoughts about Leo's parents and sacrifices that he'd have to make, as she was faced with the realization of her own required sacrifice - her hair.

Leo brought her to the aisle with hair dye, and she sadly gazed upon the options. Dani subconsciously squeezed Leo's hand tightly, as if trying to hand onto her ruby locks. It would be too difficult to lighten her hair to blonde without professional help, so that meant Danielle would have to go darker. Black hair would be a bit too extreme, the princess believed, and she instead settled on a dark brunette hair color. Grabbing the box of dye off the shelf and reluctantly putting it in the cart, Danielle sighed. "I hope so..." She replied, leaning into Leo as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead. Danielle could have stayed like that forever, comforted in Leo's arms, but they had one more thing to attend to - checking out.

As the pair headed to the check out, Danielle tossed shampoo and conditioner meant for dyed hair into the cart, completing the list of things she needed. "Yeah, I think I got everything..." Danielle nodded, moving down to start bagging their groceries as Leo gestured to do. After putting a few items into a bag, Danielle quickly discovered that there was an art to bagging groceries so as not to ruin any of the food. Learning from her mistakes with the first bag, Danielle did better with the bags that followed, and soon all of the groceries had their new homes in bags and Leo finished paying.

"Well... First official grocery shopping- check!" Danielle chirped, trying to shake off the gloom from picking out hair dye and looking on the bright side. "And we made it out unscathed." She smiled, pushing the cart to the jeep and stopping by the trunk door. When Leo unlocked the jeep, Danielle helped to load the groceries in, and then pushed the cart back to where the others were kept when they were finished.

As she climbed up into the jeep, Danielle let out a long breath, leaning back into the seat. The shopping trip had been fun, for the most part, but the new experience was a little draining too. Danielle still couldn't fathom that people did this multiple times a week, and sometimes alone, and sometimes with a bunch of kids in tow. How in the world did people manage?!

"Thank you for buying the groceries," Danielle said, looking to Leo when he got into the driver's seat. She leaned over, placing a hand on his cheek as she brought her lips to his, giving him a sweet kiss. The princess was truly so grateful for Leo, not just for paying for their food, or showing her how to shop for groceries, but for not even batting an eye when she asked him to leave everything behind with her. As her bodyguard, Danielle knew that Leo would give his life to protect her if needed, but she'd never imagined he'd have to give up his life in this way to protect her happiness.

Payton Camden

Payton was never the one to actually step forward and save anything. Let alone the whole kingdom. As the youngest child in the Camden family, she knew she was expected to actually marry a gentleman from the higher society, maybe some Duke or Earl or someone like that. But then again, she always thought she was the only sibling who would be allowed to actually look for a man she wanted, a man she could maybe even date, fall in love with, even look for the one she would like to call her husband. As every little girl, Payton had her dreams and wanted them to come true. Alas, she decided to step in now. And the first and only time she decided to save the kingdom was in the situation that was going to lock her in an arranged marriage that was not even hers in the first place.

Yet, Payton was mostly happy because she managed to get Danielle the happy ending her sister yearned for. And maybe Payton could learn to like, maybe even love Graham. After all, arranged marriages were nothing unusual among the royals. It was the most common way of saving countries, merging families and ensuring continuation of houses. And though the House Camden had a male heir, the economy was not the greatest and even whimsical Payton understood that this marriage simply had to happen.

The youngest princess was at the crossroads in her life. There were so many things she could do, pretend for the rest of her life, or until Danielle was in hiding. She could also run away at night, follow Dani’s example sans the homme fatale. Or she could tell Graham the truth. Right here, right now as they were finally getting comfortable around each other, munching on smores. The idea was so impulsive that Payton never realized the little things. Maybe the princesses looked a lot alike but there were certain features that did not match and any attentive eye would notice for sure. A slightly different shade of red in their hair, Dani’s hazel eyes could never match Payton’s blue orbs, Payton was even a little bit shorter which made her the tiniest member of their family. But if played carefully, she could pass for Danielle very well. And if she had more time to prepare, she would mask all of those differences flawlessly.

As the two exchanged their kind of compliments, Payton laughed softly. “Troublesome? You have no idea.” she smirked, pretending there was some utter mystery behind this veil. But in all honesty, she was truly enjoying herself more than she expected to. Upon his arrival, Graham seemed to be the same as all future kings. Dry stick in the mud. A man who was too focused on the future, so much so that he forgot to live in the moment. Something that Payton actually preferred. Their lunch definitely didn’t go according to her ideas and Graham was just proving her that no matter how handsome he was, inside, he was ugly as hell. But this little encounter, hiding in the playhouse, it really turned the situation around and when she actually heard him laugh, that surprised the hell out of her.

“You know…” she spoke after her laughter of the Scooby-Doo joke receded, “…you can laugh more. I won’t tell anyone that you did so your royal ass won’t be in trouble.” she winked, knowing very well she was breaking protocol by speaking to him this way. But if they were supposed to live together forever, Payton really needed him to ease a little.

As he explained how her marriage was not valid, Payton laughed again and rolled her eyes softly. “You’re so serious, Graham.” she grinned and threw a handful of marshmallows at him. “But yes, I still am a Scooby fan. All cartoons for that matter. I like movies in general but animated ones are seriously the best.” Payton truly was a fan of cartoons and though she was no couch potato, when it came to animated movies, she could spend hours in front of the TV.

“I like reading too. But I was mostly too restless to actually do it for a longer time.” Payton shrugged but realized that maybe she should add a little bit of Dani’s hobbies not to raise suspicion. Looking up, her gaze traced Graham’s face, drinking in its handsomeness for a moment. Fire threw shadows on it making it even more appealing. His strong jawline, sparkles in his eyes, profile as if molded by angels. He really was an attractive man. And that was when Payton noticed a smudge of chocolate and marshmallow over his lower lip. “You have…a little something…right here…” she spoke quietly and leaned closer with a clean napkin in her hand. Feeling a little awkward, the girl set her left hand on his naked shoulder, feeling how warm his skin was. Her other hand neared his face and wiped the remnants of the sweet treat from his lip. “I’m sorry…didn’t mean to be this forward.” Payton almost whispered, looking at Graham, forgetting herself as she remained in the little intimate position, her eyes never leaving his.

Leo Davenport

Leo Davenport was definitely a family man. Ever since he started to realize these things, he knew he wanted a big family. To find a girl he would love more than the world itself and together, they would just flood the earth with their little offspring. And maybe he actually found the girl he would consider his partner for life. Danielle had everything Leo was ever looking for in a girl. She was not only incredibly beautiful but also smart and intuitive. She was the whole package of beauty and brains, courageous and willing to fight for her own happiness, determined to get that happy ending she deserved. She was exactly the kind of a woman Leo was looking for.

And now he had her. It was almost unbelievable but that dream girl, the princess, literally and metaphorically, was standing here with him because she herself actually wanted. How Leo ever got this lucky, he would never understand. But the man would not say no to the happiness that crossed his path. And even though he was also pretty content with their small moments back in the palace, the ones they stole every now and then so Leo could taste her sweet lips and not be found but it was more than clear that they both wanted more. But while the former bodyguard thought it impossible, he would be happy to have what he could get. The fact that Danielle actually wanted to run away with him, that it was actually her idea, it blew Leo’s mind. And now, they were here. Shopping for groceries like and other normal couple.

As they kept casually talking about food, Leo promised Danielle to make her a grilled cheese any time she wanted but he was also serious about her making some for him and serve them in bed. “You can eat grilled cheese anytime. But they taste exceptionally well in bed, your highness.” he leaned closer as if he was telling her a secret. Also that way no one heard he called her with her title.

The food conversation went a little further and they ended up with Leo’s favorite food. As he described it, it never occurred to him that the combo could sound a little odd. But if Danielle ever tasted chicken and waffles from his mom, the redhead would never want to eat anything else. “You know what? We can learn to make it together. I can always call my mom for her special recipe and we can make this our little tradition if you want. Cooking together. I’d imagine that we should have some of those too, right? Our little things. Maybe cooking could be one of them?” To Leo, it sounded quite adorable and he realized that with Dani, he was turning into the biggest softie. Like a teddy bear. Of course, he could quickly become a grizzly if someone was trying to hurt them but overall, he was all cuddles and kisses. Danielle was doing that to him. Filling his heart with the compassion up to the brim.

The two finished their shopping with a box of hair dye and a few snacks Leo added and they proceeded to the checkout. There was no need to linger in one place for longer than they really had to. One could never know whether the palace had already launched the search party and Leo really didn’t want to end their adventure before it actually started. Leo made sure the whole shopping was up on the belt and went to help Dani with packing everything.

Back in the car, Leo was about to start the car when Dani spoke and thanked him for buying the groceries. “Of course, sweetness.” he shrugged, offering her a sheepish smile. To him, it was nothing special. He simply did what he would always do. Something that came as common to him. But was also glad how she saw it and it gave him a little ego boost as if he was hero or something. “Told you I would take care of you, didn’t I?”

The jeep came to life with that typical loud cough after Leo turned the key in the ignition and pulled away from the parking space, leaving the lot to drive them both home. For a moment, he played with the buttons of the radio but since he needed to pay attention to the road, he let Danielle play any music she wanted and snaked his arm around her shoulders. “What do you want to do next? Do you have any bucket lit of thigs you want to try now that you are out of your nest, little bird?”

Graham Alton

Graham rolled his eyes a little in jest when Payton told him he could laugh more. "Oh, well now that I have your permission, I'll be sure to laugh freely..." He said sarcastically, his nose scrunching just a bit when the princess used the phrase "royal ass". The only time that kind of language was used around Graham was when he was participating in sports or athletic activities with his mates. Those were probably the times that he was most relaxed and unconcerned with proper etiquette. Even his younger siblings rarely used such language around him, at least when in the presence of anyone else. Now, though, he would have to add Danielle to the list of those permitted to take such verbal liberties, he supposed.

Graham raised a hand to block the marshmallow projectiles thrown at him by the princess. "Well, one of us needs to be..." He retorted, raising an eyebrow and glancing at the marshmallows that now lay on the ground from Payton's childish antics. "And the less serious you are, the more I have to make up for it... to balance things." He added, with a slight grin.

The prince listened to the princess as she talked about her fondness for cartoons and animated movies. Another new fact about his bride-to-be. His research was not turning out to be very helpful at all. Though, this wasn't a complete surprise, since he'd grown up being told to never trust the tabloids or pay them much mind. The princess's comment about being too restless to read for very long though caught his attention and he frowned.

"When we spoke on the phone previously, you mentioned you'd spent the day reading Chauvelier's latest book..." Graham said, a little confused by the conflicting information. Perhaps Princess Danielle had been up to other things that day that she did not want to share and just used reading as an alibi... But that didn't make much since either. The book in question had just come out the day before, and the two had discussed the plot. It had been one of the few conversations the two didn't have to force.

Graham wasn't able to contemplate the truth for very long though, as Payton noticed remnants of s'mores on Graham's lip. His attention was diverted away from the princess's hobby as she leaned in towards him. Her hand on his shoulder was soft, and a little cool to the touch, which was rather refreshing since his shoulder had been burning a little from being close to the fire. His eyes glanced at her hand in question, before returning to Payton as she wiped the chocolate away.

Typically, the prince would have been insulted by such a forward gesture, and had they been in public, he might have rebuffed the princess's hand before it reached his lip. It would never do for him to be seen having his mouth wiped by someone else like a toddler... However, in the privacy of the play house, away from any intruding gazes or judgements... the gesture was almost intimate.

His thoughts about the inconsistencies with her reading were quickly forgotten. In fact, the prince's brain was unoccupied by any thoughts other than of how delicate the princess's features were as she paused just before him. Graham saw her mouth move as she uttered some kind of apology about being forward, but even as the words left her lips, she didn't pull away. It was then that Graham realized his gaze had been focussed on them, and he raised his gaze to meet Payton's.

His hand had reached up to close around hers that held the napkin before Graham realized he had even had the impulse to do so. Her hand was small within his, and he held it tenderly, as if afraid to commit to gripping her hand. In this moment, the temptation to close the gap between him and his beautiful fiance was pulling at him. Had they not been forcibly betrothed to one another, the prince probably would have given in too and kissed the princess...

However, it was because of their forced relationship that he did not. Neither had given their consent to be married, which left the awkward question of consent now when he wanted to kiss Danielle. There seemed to be something between them, but he didn't want to assume anything. It would be unforgivable if he misread her actions or expression and forced a kiss upon her. No. Graham would show restraint and be a gentleman. Avoid the possibility of ruining what repoire he and Danielle had managed to build within the small playhouse. Even if he desired otherwise.

Giving the princess's hand a soft squeeze, Graham thanked Payton for her observant eye before releasing her hand. Clearing his throat a little, Graham looked away from her, reaching down to gather the runaway marshmallows from earlier. His heart thumped a little quicker in his chest though, and he had to be satisfied with only imagining what it would have been like to kiss his princess.

Danielle Camden

Danielle bit her lip to hide her impish smile when Leo leaned close to inform her that grilled cheese tasted exceptional in bed, and she mentally took note. Her mind trailing to other things that were probably exceptional in bed that she couldt try before her newfound freedom...

The discussion turned to Leo's favorite foods and his mother, which put a quick end to Dani's current train of thought. She smiled at the idea of starting a new tradition of cooking with Leo. Though, she wondered if Leo's mother would be terribly keen on sharing her secret recipe with the woman who was responsible for turning her son's life upside down. Dani's worries about Leo's parents hating her could wait though. Everything that took away from how happy she was right now could wait.

Leo, her once serious bodyguard, was becoming so sweet right before her very eyes, in ways she'd never expected. Yes, he'd been sweet to her while they were hiding their relationship, but it was in different ways. He'd never before talked about having traditions together. Really, they'd never talked about having anything together aside from their secret.

The future had always been a topic they avoided like the plague, and for good reason. Up until this morning, they had no future together, even before Danielle was engaged. It was impossible to entertain the idea of becoming anything more than secret lovers. And when the news came that Danielle would marry Graham, even their secret affair would have to come to an end and they wouldn't even have the present. It was only then, when the impossibility of being with Leo was set in stone, did Danielle think about the future she could have had with him. The one that Graham would prevent her from having. The one that she wanted.

Danielle hadn't been distraught over having an arranged marriage. She'd been distraught over losing Leo. Had she never met Leo, she would have held her tongue and obediently done her duty. Yes, she was mad at her father for forcing her to marry someone else... because that someone wasn't Leo. Deciding to run away was the first impulsive thing Danielle had done in her life. Well, that was a lie. Starting a secret romance was the first impulsive thing, which then led to her second impulsive thing.

Neither of which Dani regretted as the groceries were purchased, the jeep loaded, and their trip back to Leo's house underway. Leo offered a sheepish smile when she thanked him. "I never doubted you..." Danielle replied, choosing a radio station for them to listen to. She leaned into his arm when he snaked it around her shoulders, pondering his question about what she wanted to do next and her bucket list.

"Well... my bucket list is a little long. I've had twenty some years to add to it." Danielle admitted. This time it was her turn to smile sheepishly. "So we can knock things off that little by little. Some things are trickier to do than others." She added, trying to think of things that they could actually do now though. She yawned a little, the rythmic noise that the jeep's old engine made serving as a mechanical lullaby. Shopping was much more exhausting that Dani thought, or maybe it was just because everything was so new.

"Is it lame that I just want to be lazy with you next?" Danielle asked simply. It wasn't very often that the princess could spend time doing nothing. Not that being lazy with Leo was nothing, but it was something that didn't have any pressure attached to it. There was nowhere she had to be, or do, or was avoiding... She could just be content. Purely, and blissfully content. Ideally held in the arms of the man who'd stolen her heart.

Payton Camden

It was pretty much clear that Graham was not exactly familiar with the tone Payton was taking with him. But if the two were supposed to spend their lives together, it was only fair to let him see what it meant to be with her. Not getting a mean harpy of a wife, not at all. But Payton was a firecracker, she liked to think that about herself and life with her was not boring. Her mom used to say that jokingly before and Payton remembered that from her early childhood. Back then, she had no idea what it meant and to her, running around the castle, having scraped knees and elbows and wild hair from the wind was normal. Only later the princess fully understood that her mom was playfully teasing her when saying that Payton’s husband had his work cut out for him. Of course, back then, neither of them really knew Payton was going to become the Queen. That was never the plan. Or at least not the Queen of both Astorias.

It was actually Queen Cristina who taught Payton the importance of laughter and how no true royal went without it. And if her partner missed that funny part, Payton should teach him, she should make up for it just as her mother did with her father’s life. King Philip was not exactly known for his laughter and though he was loved by people, it was not because they knew his laughter that much. It was the Queen who entered hearts of the loyal subjects and usually made way for her husband. They were the greatest team together and people adored the royal family thanks to that. Payton should really think about it and understand the role her mother bore. It all pointed to the fact that Payton herself would have to become a version of beloved Queen Cristina.

Payton got a little too much into talking and went on and on about her love for animated movies. In that moment, she let herself slip again as she stopped thinking like Danielle would, she stopped thinking about what her sister liked and got too much into her own hobbies. No wonder Graham picked up on it, he was a lot of things but idiot was definitely not one of them. Payton completely forgot how fond Dani was of books and how much she actually read. And in her cheerful chatter, she got completely lost in her own thoughts and words and simply disregarded reading as an activity that was just not for her.

With Graham’s next words, Payton’s heart sank. Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit. Definitely not vocab of the future Queen but Payton was positively terrified. Did she just blow her cover? Did she just ruin everything not just for herself but for Dani as well? It was way too soon for the two lovebirds to be declared missing. Payton should have done so much better than this. Trying to keep her face straight, her mind was reeling so fast and hard, resembling those green Matrix movie numbers. What to do? What to say? How to reverse this situation to make it look like a cute slip or an adorable joke?

The remedy came in a form she never expected. Chocolate smeared over Graham’s lip caught her interest and no, Payton’s true intention was not distraction. At least not in this way. Either way, she leaned closer and the napkin touched Graham’s lip, wiping the stain away. Not in a million years would Payton consider this an offensive gesture and in her book, she was just thoughtful. And impulsive as hell, Payton, jesus, seriously? Her mind was running a mile a minute and sharing that proximity with her future husband, she couldn’t stop thinking about how intimate it actually was, especially since he was barely dressed.

Payton apologized for being so forward immediately but for some reason that was beyond her, she remained close to Graham, her face closer to his than ever, her hand resting in his naked skin. As his hand met hers, Payton let out a shaky breath. Graham’s hand was warm, softer than she expected and pleasant to touch, radiating something Payton couldn’t quite name just yet. Her lower lip quivered and there was something hanging in the air between them, something unspoken, something they both felt but couldn’t be certain it was real just yet. Her eyelids fluttered in the gentlest way as she moved tiny bit closer as if she was pulled to him by some unknown magnetic force. Was he going to kiss her? Now? Well, she certainly wasn’t ready for that but god, she wanted it. She wanted to know if his lips were as soft as his hand and this desire was surging through her tiny body, desire to kiss her prince.

Only when he let her hand go after squeezing it softly, only when he looked away, the invisible thread connecting their mind was torn and Payton herself shuddered and looked aside into the fire, scurrying a bit further. With her heart pounding like crazy, the girl stood up, trying to look less flustered as she really was. “Your shirt is…it’s dry already.” she spoke quietly, trying to ignore what just happened or else she might even faint. “Maybe we should…you know…it’s been quite some time.” Payton spoke with all the poise now, slipping back in her shoes. Be Dani, channel your inner Dani right now. What would she do? Payton reached for her hat and put it back on, fixing it on her hair, straightened her back and lifted her chin up, just as she was taught. “I assume my father is already expecting us.” Payton’s voice was a tad more official now as she was trying her best not to think about the memory that was now forever seared in her brain, making her knees shake.

Leo Davenport

Leonard never thought about himself as a teacher of any sort. He was not exactly good at it and never thought he could be much of that person to pass knowledge to others. At least not in the way his parents were. It was one of his greatest fears that he was never going to be able to become a good dad himself because he lacked the patience and was not exactly great at explaining things to others as he got tangled in his own words way too much and ended up with an ineligible bunch of sentences he himself had difficulties to understand. It was almost ridiculous to see a grown-up man of Leo’s stature to stumble over his words as if he was a nervous nerdy teenager trying to ask the pretty girl to a prom.

But now he had a chance to train his skills. Danielle was not a child nor she needed extra supervision. She simply wasn’t accustomed to the world outside of the palace, without all the restrictions that being a royal carried with the title. Everything was new to her, even something as simple as getting groceries. And Leo was here now to make sure she learned everything. It was his shot at teaching her the ordinary people ways and actually test his skills as a teacher. Moreover, he would gladly take her as his student in Ordinary Quiet Life 101 as she was the cutest student he could possibly get.

As a bodyguard, Leo was used to following orders from this way or that. Here, he was the one rather in charge as Dani was still learning. It was definitely a new situation for them both, she was not his boss anymore and though he still swore to protect her no matter what, he was not her employee now, he was not going to protect her because his work contract said he had to, but because he hated the idea of anything happening to this girl. Future was uncertain, neither of them knew what was going to happen, what the next month, next week, hell, even the next day held for them. And so, Leo decided it was time to live in the moment. Carefully, with one eye always watching their backs, but in the moment still.

As they drive home, accompanied by coughs of the old vehicle and sounds of the radio, Leo’s mind was already spinning an elaborate plan what to do for this woman by his side, how to show her what she meant to him. There was no way he could afford showering her with gifts and something was telling him that expensive jewelry was not a way here anyway. He simply had to be the Leo Danielle fell in love with in the first place, that was definitely the path he had to take.

“You know, I really want to see that bucket list. You should put it on the fridge so we can cross out the individual items, you know.” he smirked, winking at her as he slowly pulled from the main road to the smaller one, leading to their new love nest. “I’d love to know each and every single one of the items on your list.” And possibly make them happen, he though but decided not to promise anything, just in case. Dani was not a girl who would hold his words against him but still, he wanted to be sure he could make all her dreams come true before promising her the world. Especially in the situation they were in right now.

“No…actually, it’s perfect.” Leo smiled over Dani wanting to be lazy. They deserved a little break, a little moment they didn’t have to think about anything and anyone, just hold each other and enjoy the moment, enjoy each other. It was not some largely elaborated plan with details or anything but it was the perfect idea of their afternoon. “Once I put the groceries away, we can totally waste the afternoon in bed.” That one sentence put a playful grin on his face. The two never really got further than hot makeout sessions in the hidden rooms and they sure got handsy a lot but there was simply no time and no opportunity to take things further. And Leo wouldn’t even do that unless he was absolutely sure it was what she wanted. But spending time with Dani in the sheets, even fully clothed, was something he was looking forward incredibly.

As the jeep parked at the house, Leo grabbed the keys from the ignition and got out, walking to the back to take the groceries. He handed Dani a small light bag and keys from the front door while he loaded the rest of the shopping in his arms, carrying it to the house. The man patiently waited for Danielle to unlock the door and only then walked in, heading straight to the kitchen. If he could, he would snatch her in his arms immediately and carry her upstairs, because fuck the groceries, they were not as important as her. He just needed to be a responsible adult now. Even the thought itself had him rolling his eyes immediately. “You can grab us some snacks, you know. Something to munch on while we’re lazy.” Leo spoke as he was loading the fridge with the fresh produce from paper bags.

Graham Alton

One moment Graham was inches away from kissing the sweet lips of his future bride... Both drawn together by an invisible tether. Or, at least he had thought they both felt it... And then the next moment they'd broken the spell and the princess was already standing and commenting that they should return to the palace.

Graham's brow furrowed for a moment in... what was it he was feeling? Disappointment? Regret? Confusion? He knew Danielle was probably right, they ought to be returning from their "walk in the garden", but now he was concerned that he had perhaps done something wrong. Had he offended his fiance? Either by almost kissing her... or by not kissing her? Or was she appalled by the near intimacy and now trying to flee without being rude? A hundred questions buzzed through Graham's usually collected mind, but he did his best to not show it.

As Payton busied herself putting her shoes and hat back on, Graham rose from his seat by the fire and pulled his shirt from the chair. With each button that he fastened, he tried to reassure himself that he was just over thinking things. Maybe the princess deciding that they should head back was just coincidental timing? Though the suddenly official tone of Danielle's voice told Graham that he wasn't over thinking things. The walls that they'd both managed to bring down for a while were back up.

"Danielle, I..." Graham began, not really sure if he was trying to apologize, or clear the air. Either way, he changed his mind. "Thank you for the smores, and for somewhere to dry off." He said, resuming his more formal tone as well to match the princess's.

Yes, the feeling that he was trying to name earlier was disappointment after all. He immediately disliked their formality, wishing they could go back to being semi-friendly to each other. Was this how their relationship was going to be? Ebbs and flows between friends and foes?

Finished redressing, Graham gave one last glance around the playhouse, before returning the blanket he'd borrowed to the couch, neatly folded. He doubted he'd ever be back in Danielle's childhood play area, but it had served its purpose well. Walking to the door, he held it open for the princess, gesturing for her to exit first.

As she passed him though, Graham had to clench his fist at his side to keep from reaching out to her to stop her. It would have been so easy to wrap his arm around her tiny waist, pull her closer and capture her lips in a kiss. Graham surprised himself a little by having such thoughts, especially when he had started the day almost determined to not like Princess Danielle, but now...

The prince's hand relaxed again once Payton was safely outside and out of his reach. The wave of disappointment washed over him again. They of course, would be expected to kiss at the altar, so it wasn't like it would be much longer until the mystery of their chemistry was answered. But it would have been nice to have maybe had one natural moment between them.

"I don't hear any sirens wailing or guards yelling out, so they must not have sent a search party yet..." Graham said, attempting a joke to lighten the mood.

"We may need a bigger fridge then..." Danielle smirked teasingly, "My list is going to take up the whole thing." She said, trying to even come to an estimate of how many different things she wanted to try. "But I'll write it out tomorrow." The princess added, touched by how eager Leo seemed to be to learn of the things she wanted to do in life now that she was free. Though, honestly, now that she had Leo, the things she'd thought were important before were becoming secondary.

Danielle smiled brightly when Leo said her idea to be lazy was perfect, and her cheeks flushed at his playful grin when he said they could waste the afternoon in bed. Even if they didn't actually do anything, the idea of getting to lie with Leo in a bed was still more intimate in a way than any of their makeout sessions had been. It was a different kind of intimacy that they'd not yet been able to share. Was Leo even a cuddler? Was she a cuddler?

"Sounds like a plan!" Danielle nodded as they pulled into the driveway. She took the bag and keys from Leo, laughing a little at his comparatively heavy load of groceries. Once she'd unlocked the door, she held it open for Leo to let him go in first so he could set the bags down as quickly as possible.

Another spell of laughter escaped from Danielle when Leo told her she could pick out some snacks for them to munch on. "Oh, right! Because everything tastes better in bed." She replied, recalling their earlier conversation about grilled cheeses in bed.

As she helped unload the bags, for Leo to then put away, she set aside a few things for them to snack on. A couple scones, a couple cookies, and a container of raspberries were selected for their munching pleasure, and Danielle looked through the cupboards until she found a large plate to put them all on. It was no silver platter expertly arranged by a culinary chef, but Danielle was just as pleased with her humble plate of goodies.

With her task complete, she leaned against the counter a little as she watched Leo finish putting away the rest of the groceries. She could feel the butterflies starting to flutter in her stomach already in anticipation for getting some relaxation time with the man she'd runaway with. At this moment in time, her bucket list be damned. All she wanted was to be with Leo.

Once the fridge door was closed and the bags dealt with, Danielle pushed herself off of the counter and closed the space between her and Leo. Wrapping her arms around his waist, Danielle hugged him as she tilted her head back to look up at him. "I think we've been responsible citizens enough for one day, huh?" She smiled softly, enjoying the warmth of his body as she held him. "The scones and the bed are calling your name." She added, with a coy smile.

Payton Camden

The idea of kiss resonated in Payton’s mind for what seemed like hours. And the moment itself felt like that too. After her first experience with man’s lips touching hers, Payton was sure she was not going to do this anytime soon. Movies certainly made it look much more appealing than the actual experience and she was determined to only kiss a man she really felt strongly about. And in a way, she felt strongly about Graham though it was not love. Not just yet. How could she love a man she saw for the first time in her life? Yet the feeling towards him was not hate, it was not resentful or negative at all. The prince had some kind of effect on her, maybe because he was a real match to her in terms of banter. Usually men gave up and let Payton have her way. Graham was different. Not only he kept up, he might very well even surpass her.

However, the moment passed soon. Apparently, Graham was not as keen on them kissing as she was. Of course not. She was just a princess who was forced on him. Well, Danielle was. Payton was a secret second-hand substitute of her graceful sister. It all was making Payton emotional and she was biting insides of her cheeks not to let go. She really needed to talk to someone. Father would never understand, Dani was gone. Maybe…Philip? Siblings used to be very close. But Philip was now pretty busy with his own lessons and royal duties of the future King. Could she even bother him with her minor petty problems? Would he even…understand?

Trying to put herself together was harder than it looked. Payton had the ability to overthink every situation and this might just be happening now. Why wouldn’t he kiss her? Because it was too soon? Because he didn’t know her? Was he being polite or was she just way too ugly for him to kiss? But it was there, the moment, the chemistry, they had it and even inexperienced girl like Payton could feel it. So why? What happened? Was she really that horrible? To get rid of all these thoughts, Payton rather suggested returning to the castle. If Graham was really not that fond of her company, it might be for the best. Did she mess up that much? Sure, she was no Danielle but she wasn’t the worst, or was she?

As Graham spoke up, Payton turned around on her heal, pressing her hopeful gaze into his face, wondering what he was about to say. A part of her was truly hoping he would, maybe, want to…resume…or something. But then he just thanked her for snacks and shelter. A small smile appeared on her face and she found herself a tiny bit sad that his shirt was back on, covering his body. Suddenly, the atmosphere in the playhouse became thicker, awkward even. They were having such a good time and now? Was this always going to be this weird? Or would they be able to get through this? That was the million dollar question.

Once decent, shoes and hat back in place, Payton headed for the door Graham was holding open for her and she scurried outside, looking around for any coincidental passers-by. Neither of them needed rumors of spending a few private moments in an old playhouse before wedding. Servants could come up with all sorts of stories and Payton didn’t want to create any at this point. They both already had enough blush in their cheeks as it was. The princess headed straight for the small path they had taken to come here and avoided the fountain which began this whole adventure. Apparently, it was time for their meeting to end because honestly, Payton had no idea where they could go from here.

She laughed softly over Graham’s joke when he dropped it. “I guess not. Apparently, they trust me not to get you in trouble.” she smirked, immediately thankful for the large headpiece which almost hid the rouge in her cheeks become more prominent. “I did have fun today though, Graham.” she spoke all of a sudden, walking back to the gazebo they had met in, unsure how to follow. This was incredibly out of character for her because if someone always had something to say in the Camden family, it was Payton. But meeting this man, this prince who was probably going to become her husband, a man who vibrated every cell in her body, it rendered her speechless. “Did you…did you want to…meet again?” Payton asked, frowning over her own words. “I mean…before the wedding, of course.” she added hastily but something was telling her that the next time she was going to see her prince, it would be at the altar.

Leo Davenport

Before everything happened, their escape and everything, Leo was focused on different things. His job, how to keep it, how to keep Danielle safe, to make sure he was always sharp, always ready, that everything was no less than hundred percent. In his area of employment, he couldn’t afford to make any mistake because if something happened to Princess Danielle, it was going to be on him. This was the first time they both could actually relax and not deal with any duties. This house was so hidden and so out of the center of events that until the royal guard was alarmed, they were definitely safe here. Though the thought was making him wonder what Payton did or if she even did something to buy them some time. And thinking about the younger princess made his skin crawl a little. Leo was blessed and cursed at the same time with his intuition. And something was telling him that he was not going to like the price for his happiness. But for now, the former bodyguard was keeping his concerns to himself. After all, seeing Danielle so happy and cheerful, he didn’t want to wipe that smile off. She was going to keep it for as long as possible.

“Oh, okay, you do that. Draw it on the whole living room wall if you need to. I want to see what your heart desires.” Leo commented on her bucket list, now even more curious about what she wanted to do. Life in the palace did not allow its residents to do many things “mortals” could do so Leo could only imagine but Dani’s ideas were interesting to him. And maybe he would not be able to fulfill all of them or at least not immediately, but he would definitely try his best.

Danielle made him laugh again as they were putting the shopping away. He asked her to get the snacks ready and she immediately went for his small rule of everything tasting better in bed. Leo pointed a finger gun at her, clicking his tongue. “You got that right. And you’ll see how perfect that cookie will be once you are under the blanket.” he laughed and put the empty paper bags away as well, hiding them in one of the cupboards to use them for something else later. It was time to get upstairs and waste the rest of the day and Leo couldn’t help but overthink it. They were never this intimate before and Leo didn’t want to disappoint. And even though it was just cuddling in bed, still. He wanted it to be the perfect experience for his girl.

Leo was ready to go upstairs and as he turned, he was met with Dani walking to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. He pulled her closer with one hand and the other went up to her face, tracing its frame down from temple to the tip of her chin. „Are they? Then we shouldn’t keep them waiting any longer.“ he winked over her cute remark on bed and scones. Grabbing the plate from the counter and a box of apple juice on his way, he nudged Dani a little towards the stairs, following close behind her. That wide smile was plastered across his face and whatever he did, it just wouldn’t go away. How did he ever get so lucky?

The bedroom was there just as the two left it before. It was flooded by sunlight but not way too much as the sun itself was slowly moving to the other side of the house. Leo set his snacks on the bedside table and wanting to be comfortable, he pulled his shirt over his head, throwing it aside on a laundry basket. “Though I can put it back on…sorry, I am on autopilot sometimes.” he then looked at Danielle, looking a little concerned whether he was not giving her the wrong idea. If she was okay with him being half naked, Leo would slip under the comforter and tap the spot right next to him. “Come join me, princess.” he smiled and once they both were comfortably snuggled, he pulled her even closer.

Just to have some background noise, he turned the small TV on, the one right in front of the bed. He had some local channel there as well, currently broadcasting news and curiously enough, the first thing they saw was the Camden Palace. “Look, love, your old home.” Leo snickered. “I hope you are not regretting this already.”

The reporter on TV was cheerfully talking about the most recent news from the royal family. Pictures of Graham and Danielle were in the left upper corner. Leo just reached for the snack plate when he overheard something that caught his interest and he also turned the volume up. “Today was marked by the very pleasant meeting of His Royal Highness Prince Graham Alton of Northern Astoria with his future wife Her Royal Highness Princess Danielle Camden of Southern Astoria. Both nations are now eagerly awaiting news about the upcoming royal wedding between the young royals. According to our information from an anonymous source from inside the palace, the two are now enjoying a lovely lunch and get-together in the garden of the Camden Palace. We will bring more information…”

The rest of the report got lost in the background as Leo stopped listening to it, his eyes narrowed. “Dani?” he started, gears in his head turning faster than ever. “How come Graham is enjoying afternoon with you if you are here with me?” he asked, turning his gaze on the princess. Something was up and Leo’s intuition was tingling. In the bad way. But for the world, the bodyguard couldn’t figure it out.
