I don't know how to do the spoilers thing, so... mini spoilers? Not like anyone is probably going to care-
Sai is actually the Biblical monster Leviathan, who has been summoned and forced into pacts routinely over the last few centuries. It's because of this, they have such distaste for humans. The last time they were summoned was during the beginning of World War 1, along with Behemoth, their companion. Summoning allows them to be welded to an object or vessel, forcing them to be degraded and strip their true form away. In WW1, it was a pistol. During this time period, they were essentially used as weapons of mass destruction, razing down entire towns and destroying crucial military bases. They are still conscious while they're sealed away, and they are aware of pain; however, they are physically incapable of disobeying commands made using the pact. (Consequences of disobeying a pact are... super spoilers, so not going to be discussed.)
Obviously, Leviathan is not very happy with this. So during a crucial attack on a ocean-based Austrian-Hungary outpost, they break free and escape. Behemoth decided not to join them, and as predicted by Levi, they were killed soon after.
For the next century, Leviathan essentially just mopes around in the ocean, because, well, the other half of them is dead. Far from the Bible states, they are fully killable by modern technology, or by those who hold pacts with them. However, about a decade ago, they were summoned again and forced into a human body. Having a human body as a vessel is extremely rare, as they have to be perfectly at the brink between life and death; if they were living, they would reject the spirit, hence why living things can't be magically possessed. If they were dead, it would only be a while before the corpse starts falling apart. If it's that perfect balance, they're allowed to take over the body, and have it regain health at the same time.
So Levi is very sad about this, of course, because pacts, humans, ew, what the hell do you want from me this time. But their newest summoner just... watches them, and sets them free, only with instructions to never unleash their true form. So yeah, that just leads them up to where they are now.
