Fandom Into the fire (1x1 MzHyde/Gallifrog)

She couldnt help but chuckle at his reaction to her moment of corniness. She she shook her head at his reply. "Nah, my little moment is enough of a chick flick moment even I can handle!" She laughed. She may be a woman she was far from the chick flick moment type of girl. She did after all, admit that she punched guys to stop them from hitting on her when she was in her twenties instead of just walking away.

"So take what you want out of what I said. Brush it off or take something from it. Whatever suits that hard guy reputation of yours best" she smirked, a glint in her eye. "I can hardly expect you do something in reaction that I wouldn't do myself. Years ago I told my adoptive dad to go fuck himself when he spouted hallmark card bull" she laughed, admitting.

John nodded. "Somehow I'm not surprised." He remarked after she told her story about telling her adoptive father to go fuck himself. He could easily see himself something that stupid. "Excellent, cos if I did do one of those things I'm either completely and utterly off me scone or I've replaced with some kind of John Constantine replicant thingy."

He took a glance at his watch as he spoke, it was later than he realised. Elliott would most likely show his face at some early hour of the morning. John wanted to be around for that, plus there was the whole message from Jay debacle to deal with.

She chuckled when he said he wasn't surprised. Was she really that readable to him? She smiled at his continued reply. "Nice for the confirmation because I'd probably ask who you were and what have you done with the real John if you did" she said.

She noticed him look at his watch. She had lost complete track of time quite frankly. Not long ago she was yawning when Chas was still there, now she felt like she could stay up all night with John talking. "I'm guessing Ell will sneak in at some early hour in the morning?" She decided to change the subject onto something else just to keep them talking. She did what seemed to have become a habit now and leaned against him. She just felt like she could be casual around him and he never seemed to complain before.

"Yeah, he will, probably hoping we're asleep so he doesn't have to deal with any questions. When it comes to certain things Elliott is a creature of habit." John's eyes briefly flicked towards the door as he spoke. It was almost as if he expected, that by simply saying Elliott's name, his adoptive son would, at that instant walk through the door.

But he didn't. "He shouldn't have any nightmares tonight either." John told her, figuring she would need to know that. "But I'm going to guess that as soon as he reads the message Jay told me to give him, he'll bolt out of here like his ass is on fire"

She smirked at that. She thought how that was a typical thing to do when someone was in their twenties or teen years. If people denied ever doing that, she'd call them a liar.

She was relieved when he said about no nightmares should plague Elliott tonight. "Good" she simply replied before he said about him bolting out the door from the message from Jay. That didn't surprise her as much as it probably would have done. She knew how much his team meant to Elliott and if he was doing something behind John's back, then it clearly was extremely important to him.

Shifting slightly, she pulled John's arm out from under her, not just for her own comfort but for his too, as it wouldn't be long before her weight would give him a dead arm. So instead she draped it over her shoulder. It meant better comfort for the both of them.

He didn't say anything in response to Kay's response. There wasn't much to say on the topic anyway. He was going to start to protest when Kay grabbed his arm out of the blue, but then realised what she was doing and relaxed. He even adjusted his position to make it more comfortable.

His eyelids began to droop slightly, and try as he might to resist it, eventually sleep took him. He didn't snore, he just went quiet as his breathing slowed, and his head dropped away from the direction Kay was in. His face didn't change that much when he was asleep, but there were some subtle changes.

(last post)

She felt his body tense slightly when she adjusted the position before relaxing again and she couldn't help but smirk slightly to herself when he just adjusted to make it more comfortable for the both of them.

She was awake a little longer than he was to see if Elliott would show up, she even whispered "goodnight" to him when she realised he was asleep. She pulled the blanket strategically over the both of them and within around fifteen minutes after that, she fell asleep herself. Her head dropped to against his arm.

They would have looked a right pair for when Elliott walked in whenever that would be. On the whole she was a sound sleeper, but one point on her sleep she did end up hugging John's arm.

Elliott did indeed arrive in the dark hours of the morning. He tied up the bike outside and quietly made his up to the fourth floor. He opened the door as quietly as possible, but John heard him all the same. Removing himself from the blanket, the couch and Kay, he carefully stood up and moved towards his son.

Elliott looked shattered, he clearly hadn't slept since the last night. But his eyes had changed back to their normal colour, all hints of the molten gold gone. The two spoke in hushed tones, leaning against the kitchen counter. "you alright there kiddo?" John asked, putting an arm around Elliott's shoulder.

"Still feel like total shit to be honest, but I'll be better. You?" Elliott replied quietly, leaning against John's shoulder. John belw out a breath before admitting "Same as you, took out my emotions on a whole load of demons. Made things better for a while." "So the usual Newcastle day bullshit?" Elliott asked, both tensing up as he mentioned the dreaded name.

"Yeah..." They both lapsed into silence at that. "Your girlfriend called by the way." John broke the silence a few moments later. "I don't have a girlfriend John" Elliott replied, his face crinkling in confusion. "Oh really?" John raised a critical eyebrow turning to fully face Elliott. "What's the deal with you and Jay then?"

Elliott's face reddened enough that even in the dark of the apartment John could see it. In an effort to divert the conversation to another topic Elliott fired back "What's the deal with you and Kay then?" John smirked internally, so this was how Ell was going to play it? Easy. "She likes me a lot, and I'm to much of an iron hearted arsehole to care back. Your turn."

Elliott wasn't expecting John to tell him, but he had. "We tried to kill each other when we first met." Elliott admitted, with a genuine half smile spreading across his face. "Turns out she's not as bad as I thought, and almost as screwed up as I am. And I haven't got the guts to make a move." He finished, staring at his feet as he spoke. "And your the only person I've ever told that."

"Don't worry kiddo, I won't say anything, not even to Chas." Elliott nodded with relief. "So what did Jay want me to know?" He asked with a sheepish look. "She got the files, and it's worse than ye thought." Elliott understood instantly what John meant and sighed. "I'm not even going to ask what illegal stuff you two are up to, and I'm not gonna pry either. But if you ever do want to talk, I'm here." Elliott nodded, before hugging John properly. "Thanks John, for everything"

After a few moments they broke apart again. "I guess I'm off again then." "Guess you are." Elliott headed towards the door smiling, he grabbed his phone, and the bag of trackers on the way out. "Later John. Don't do anything stupid" "Later kiddo, get some bloody sleep will ya? You look awful." Elliott laughed quietly, before shutting the door behind him again.

(This turned out way longer than I meant it to)

Kay was still asleep even when Elliott came in. Her sleep was deep enough that even when John woke and moved, she didn't stir. All that happened was she shifted slightly, gripping onto the blanket. If she had have stirred, she'd have heard the entire conversation between the two of them and probably smiled ever so slightly at Elliott asking John about her and him.

Kay found herself dreaming once more. Large landscapes filled her mind and birds flew overhead. What started as lavish green moors became dark caves. Scenes rapidly changing, Kay's eyes were flickering under her closed eyelids. In her dream she found herself walking through a cave that had an opening high above her. If it was daylight it would have been quite a sight to take in, but the skies were dark. Birds began vanishing out of thin air, all around her embers began to spark.

"Kay...my darling Kay, go. You have to go!" Came a voice from a fussy figure in front of her. "Mom?" She asked, her voice not only echoing in her dream, but she mumbled in her sleep as well. "You must leave here, it's not safe!" Her mother kept saying, but where even was she? She didn't know. It looked familiar but so strange all at the same time.

"Mom!" She said again, she looked down and she was engulfed in flames. "You're the last of us my little FlameBird." She heard as just an echo. Kay's sleeping form tensed up, tiny sparks of ash and ember forming in her hand that was hanging off the edge of the sofa.

John let out another deep breath, blowing the air out with such force that it made his hair fly upwards. He leaned backwards against the countertop, thinking over what Elliott had just told him. Somehow he wasn't that surprised that Elliott and jay had tried to kill each other. If she was alien (as he suspected) then it made perfect sense. He got the feeling that Jay would have won that fight, but evidently something else happened.

He became aware of Kay talking quietly in her sleep. Not that he could make out the words from his spot in the kitchen. He caught sight of the sparks and embers glowing on her hands. Fire always held a strange beauty for him. It was even hinted at him his nickname- The Hellblazer. Moving closer he kept an eye on the fire, if it grew any more or set something on fire, he would wake her. But for he'd let her sleep.

Kay could see her whole ancestry disappear from some unknown force. The images were blurry and fast flowing. She felt her body get hotter and hotter in her dream. Trying decifer what she was dreaming was difficult.

"Kay you have the answers you need!" Her mother called out before she saw her go up in black flames. She couldn't understand what it meant, she had never heard of the phoenix kind dying in black flame. In reality, Kay's hand was beginning to get completely surrounded my fire, the fire having the tiniest bit of black in it.

"What answers?" Her sleeping self mumbled.

John watched as the fire around her had grew and bits of black began to appear. "What in the bloody hells?" He questioned aloud, to himself. He looked at the fire again, John couldn't risk the apartment getting set on fire with pheonix flame. He mightn't be able to put the flame out of it got too big and plus, he had neighbours who didn't deserve to be burned to a crisp in their sleep.

He placed one hand on the shoulder that wasn't attatched to the flaming hand and started to shake Kay in the hopes of waking her up.

Kay was trapped, confusion and questions wracking her mind and soul. She couldn't understand how she could tell she was with her mother but not in modern day like how she remembered her birth family.

When John started to shake her she woke up abruptly, catching her breath. Her eyes darted from John to her hand to John and back again. She recognised the flame colouring from her dream and clenched her fist tightly to extinguish it. It took a couple of attempts but it slowly died, where the black part of the flame was, it left a soot burn on her hand.

Her eyes showing slight fear as it all started to sink in she could have burned his apartment down. "John..? I..I'm sorry I could h..have.." she stammered.

Thankfully Kay did indeed wake up and after a few attempts the flame went out. He sighed internally with relief, he didn't need to go through another apartment fire drama. One was enough for anybody.

Kay was shaken, and he could see the realisation spreading across face, along with the fear. "Hey...it's okay. You didn't and that' the important part." His voice was softer than unusual and just like she had done earlier, he pulled her into a hug.

Kay still had her dream running through her mind when John was talking to her. She kept telling herself he was right. No harm was done..except for the burn still left on her hand from her own flame. She was taken aback when he pulled her into a hug so willingly.

It took her a moment before she gripped onto him, burying her head into him. She thought she was passed being freaked out by what she was, but she was proven otherwise. "I think...I think I saw how my whole race got erased...I think I'm the last John" she spoke.

Her words shocked him, and that would be visible on his face. Her whole race...gone? How? Why? When? He had known that pheonixes were rare, hence the generations worth of mythology built up about them. But he hadn't expected them to be extinct. Lying low in the downworld or hiding their powers, yes. Extinct, no.

But say she was right, and she was indeed the last. It would explain why the demons were so anxious to get their hands on her. It would explain why she was considered so valuable. He believed her. He didn't want to, but he did. He gently rubbed her back then asked "what did you see?" not entirely sure if he wanted to know the answer.

She could hardly believe it herself. It was so much to take in. Feeling him rub her back helped in making her truly focus on what she saw and to try and focus on calming down.

When he asked her what she saw she tried to think about it in the order she saw it. "It started so calm.. the place, it was so familiar but not. Like.. moors of some kind? A forest? I'm not sure... There were so many of us...then I saw a cave. I just felt....overwhelmed with dread." She began.
"I heard my mom, I saw her but...her features were blurred out. She told me I shouldn't be there. That I needed to go to safety..." She continued, her voice breaking a little. "then there was so much fire... several of my kind just phasing out of my view, screaming in pain. When my mom told me the answers I need are with me. I don't understand... Next thing I'm seeing is her going up in black flame and you waking me" she finished somehow telling him her vision.
"John I'm terrified...what if something wiped us all out? And I am the last??" She asked, looking up at him, her eyes going more grey than blue.

John listened carefully as Kay spoke, taking everything she said in. He himself didn't speak, just let her tell the story. It was a lot to process. Was it a memory? A vision? Some kind of message travelling through the void, disobeying the laws of space and time? Hell if he knew, he was just a con man with attitude at the end of the day.

He sighed "Honestly? Not the slightest clue, considering up until a you showed up, most us magic types had dismissed pheonixes are merely a myth. I'm just as clueless as you are in this. But lets say you are the last, it would explain why hell finds you so valuable." He shrugged "I'm no expert though."

Kay listened to what he had to say. So even this world thought her race was a damn myth. She thought that she had to be the last, it would be the only thing that would make sense for everything.

"It felt like I was there...I just don't understand what she meant.. I already have the answers I need?" She started thinking out loud and partly talking to John. "I wonder if she meant the book you gave me" she spoke. It was honestly the only thing she could think of. Then the other thing was the burn mark that wasn't fading on her hand. She never had that happen before. Normally she'd walk through fire and it wouldn't affect her.

"John I need to figure this out...but I can't do it on my own. I thought those dreams were passed me" she admitted.

John let Kay ramble on, but he didn't let go of her. He too was thinking what the next move was. Get more information was a must. Some of the more ancient magic users, Downworlderes and Celestials might know something of use. Maybe it was time to cash in a few favours with some old "friends."

"Oh I'm damn well helping. You're not the only one intrigued by all this stuff. Maybe Ell can do his Mindwalker stuff, see if his expertise means he can see something in your visions that you might have missed? And can you think of any similar dreams or strange memories that might be somehow related?"

She sighed with relief when he said he's helping. She was also so glad he didn't let her go. Kay was prepared to try anything, even Elliott's mindwalk. Her dream was so fuzzy it was entirely plausible she missed something.

She stayed in his arms the whole time. It was the only place she felt calm at this moment in time. She thought about her previous dreams she used to have, but hearing her mother's voice again after all these years shook her more than anything else. "I...I used to dream about stories my mom would tell me as bedtime stories. I thought that's all they were." She started saying trying to remembered them.

"That's when she'd start calling me her little FlameBird" she remembered she'd only ever told Elliott that before, way back when they went to lunch at AJ's that first time. "There was this one tale... The story of the original FlameBird. How she was made by Eve but Eve quickly grew jealous of the bird because she grabbed the attention of a God. The bird was granted immortality by the God in question and a bond was struck between them. Through Eve's jealousy, the curse of turning to ash in death was cast and she'd be reborn in her own previous body." As Kay began telling the tale, she started to remember more and more.

"She told me my name came from that bird but I never believed it and thought she was just being her unique self. I didn't think anything of it until I hit 20years old. My back grew the wings markings and the dreams began. I could see that tale unfold infront of me." She said.

The story she told sounded far too plausible for his liking. The whole Adam and Eve story was true in parts, and his experience with celestials only backed up what Kay was saying. They were petty enough to do something like grant immortality just to piss somebody off.

But the story sounded very familiar to him, as if he had heard it before. Somewhere in the depths of his mind the story she told was resonating with a long forgotten memory. But he could not force the memory to show itself, the more he tried, the more it seemed to shy away from him.

"There is no doubt that your mother knew exactly what was going on. Best guess, based on basically nothing other than my brain's ramblings, these stories would be like tribal knowledge, either passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth or through the void. Death isn't exactly permanent when it comes to knowledge."

Kay listened to what he had to say. She would appreciate anything that he could think of right now. What he guessed seemed to make sense to her. It would explain why she only got them when she was asleep and never when she was awake.

"My mother, she always had a similar tattoo to myself. Not exactly the same but she had markings. I'm thinking my dad was human and she like me. When she died in ever understood how she could be dead... Like, some part of me even at 9 years old knew we weren't like my dad" she said. "But I didn't think phoenix could be permanently killed... Not until tonight anyway" she added, she looked at her hand again that was pressed against John's chest. The burn reminded her of something but what? She couldn't put her finger on it.

"I'd agree with that, based on what you've told me. So does that mean your half human, half pheonix, or is the pheonix side always dominant regardless of the other genetic sequence?" He mused out loud, more to himself than anything else.

"It is very rare for true immortality to exist. Usually the gift gets sort of....." he gestured while searching for a suitable word "diluted down over the years. Actually..... a lot of hereditary gifts are stronger in purebloods for that reason, but every once in a while an outlier or bastard appears. For unknown reasons, power is specifically strong in them, stronger than even the most pure of purebloods." He was kind of talking about himself, but unintentionally.

She listened to what he was thinking out loud. She wondered the same things as him. They were both in the same level of knowledge over this at this point and it was becoming clear to her that they were both thinking the same things.

"Thinking back to before you and Elliott helped meld my soul fully to Fee's? I'd say she was always more dominant. The migraines if get whenever she spoke or took over, the loss of time I'd get? I was never alone back then." She replied. "Dear old dad couldn't handle having me by himself. That's why he just walked out and never came back. His last words were how i was too much like mom for him to put up with". She remembered. That was one thing she'd never forget.

She listened to what he explained about the whole immortality thing. She found it interesting what he had to say. Even though she wondered where that left her. Was it normal just how quickly she had learned her powers? She just couldn't figure out the answer. There was so many questions rattling around her mind. More than before her dream. Her only questions were why she was so drawn to John, and then the dream came about. Now she's left with more about her heritage.
