Tian Mao




Biography/Back Story:

Born in Shanghai, China to a wealthy family that was heavily involved in the world of politics. Tian grew up in a traditionalist household, his parents would always teach him that heritage, culture, family and country were the most important things to keep in mind. Tian was an exceptional child, he passed all of his classes and had a rather abnormal IQ of 157 by his teenage years, as a result of his interest in staying secluded and simply studying, Tian's social life was virtually non-existant, although that wasn't to say that he was bullied, in-fact he was just ignored entirely by his fellow students, which suited his growing mind perfectly. He enlisted in the People's Liberation Army at age 18, where he served for 15 years, eventually getting to the rank of Senior Colonel, the Chinese equivalent of a US Brigadier General.


After his service in the military, Tian's father got him a position on the Board of his company, Mao Defense Solutions, a defense contracting company currently developing weapons for the Chinese military. 3 years later, Tian now being 36, his father suffered from a stroke, and he passed away. Devestated by this loss, Tian found reconcillation in being promoted to the CEO of MDS. Under Tian's intelligent rule, the company expanded tenfold, gaining contracts in places as far away as Brazil and South Africa. It was around then that the luxuries that money and power offered became too much for Tian to handle, and he gave in to his greed. His company begun getting into more illegal activities, at one point MDS was the sole seller of military grade weaponry to the infamous China White's cartel, the most powerful gang in the South Pacific at the time.


Within his first year of running MDS, Tian Mao became the supplier of many of the world's most dangerous gangs, and some of the world's largest militaries. The governments of many countries tended to turn a blind eye to suspicons of illegal activities from MDS in return for cheaper weapons. Tian even begun supplying the Middle Eastern dictatorship state; Kahndaq, prior to the removal of it's dictator. Tian's dealings also begun to heavily involve the international criminal syndicate; Intergang, with Tian personally overseeing weapons transactions. With all of these illegal activities Mao Defense Solutions quickly became one of the world's most powerful companies, it's spending exceeding 11 billion dollars a year on Research and Development alone. It didn't take long before Tian set his sights on the United States, intending to use the country's fascination with weaponry to further his profits.


9 months ago (prior to current setting) MDS set up a new Research and Development lab in Gotham City, in the downtown district amongst all of the city's skyscrapers. 8 months ago, Tian Mao specifically visited Metropolis to see the grand opening of the Museum of War, a new educational facility sponsored by his company, 6 months ago Tian Mao visited the Pentagon to begin discussing possible superweapon contracts, however the majority of this is classified information. --- Tian's personal life became very constricted as a result of running such a large company, however that didn't mean that he was damned to a life of solitude, he did find that special someone; Angela Elian, one of his company's top researchers, they met over what was only a normal meeting at the time discussing the latest company projects. However the two seemed to hit it off almost instantly, it took Tian a surprising amount of time to work up the courage to actually try and get a date with the woman, but when he did it was successful, he took her out to one of Shanghai's best restaurants, rented out the entire place actually, before taking her home for a long night of romantic movies and warm joking.


2 months prior to current events, Angela was confirmed pregnant. Furthering Tian's desire to expand his wealth, as he now has a heir to give his own fortunes to. His company continued to expand as he became rivals of Lexcorp in the American defense business, however at some point in their rivalry the two companies realized each other's illegal dealings and decided to let it go, as they knew that both their profits would soar regardless of competition. With the current diplomatic conflict in the South China Sea, Tian was more than eager to help support his country, Mao Defense Solutions then funding the construction of additional Chinese Navy islands within the SCS to add to the ones that were already there. Within recent months MDS has started a subsidary company known as Leopard Private Security, this company is in-fact just a front for Tian's small private army that he uses to get his illegal dealings done, Leopard consists of Chinese military veterans of both officer and enlisted ranks. Within the past month Tian has bought a new penthouse in downtown Gotham, his apartment being on the top floor of one of the highest skyscrapers there. This was due to the fact that Angela wanted to stay in her hometown of Gotham, rather than leaving to Shanghai like Tian wanted, however out of his love of her, he decided to take residence in Gotham.




Personality:

Despite all of his illegal dealings, Tian isn't actually what most would consider your average criminal, at least he doesn't have the morals of a criminal. Tian's goal is solely around his company's wellbeing and his own profits, not wanting to ruin his father's legacy more than anything. Along with that he's not the type of person who would want to kill somebody, he believes all life is equal, yet his dealings conflict with his own moral views in the sense that his company supplies people who kill other people every day, in-fact indirectly MDS is the cause of hundreds, possibly thousands of death on average. He tends to keep these thoughts out of his head however, as to not feel the unending guilt of making money off of other people's suffering.


Tian could be considered a nice person by those who get a first impression, he enjoys the company of other people when he can get it, due to being isolated for most of his childhood. He likes to have a laugh with his friends, many of which he met whilst in the Army and working at MDS. He is very protective of those close to him such as his mother or Angela, yet he can be very easily set off when bad mouthed. He has serious issues with being talked down to by those he deems unworthy, his parents and those he respects he can tolerate being told off by or talked down to. However people he has just met can set him off without much provoking needed.

Layla has one motivation and one motivation only. The future. Strange in may sound, but she found herself struggling with fitting in with her new found powers, and she simply just wants a world where people like her, with scary powers, can fit in.

Persona

Personality:

A temptress at best, she often manipulates people just because she feels like doing it. Layla is fiercely independent. She is able to accomplish anything she puts her mind to and she won't give up. She is perfectly suited to being on her own. She is not a social butterfly like some other creatures and actually prefers to live on her own that way there is never any issue of who controls what at home. She loves to be in control, so when things don't work in her way, she'll probably leave the group. Layla is extremely ambitious, persistent and determined which is shown through a power hungry, controlling attitude. Not in a stubborn sense however, because she will work for what she wants and controls will justified reasons. This is obvious to any onlooker. Layla never gives up, as she is so determined to reach her goal. The key to this success is her flexibility. She is able to re-survey a situation and take a different approach if necessary. This makes her very adaptable and versatile. She is a very fierce competitor, combined with her powers of observation and her excellent memory, she will recall facts and when necessary, bring them to the table at the time of need. She will win justly, with proper facts and arguments to support her thoughts and opinions. Layla is excellent at restoring order to a chaotic situation and she is just as capable of manipulating for her own greed and benefit. Combined with her temper, Layla is a very dangerous person because she uses her powers to benefit only herself and step on other people in order to satisfy her own greed.


Powers:


[Main] Pyrokinesis: the ability to control and manipulate the element fire. Probably one of Layla's strong suit as she has had the most experience working with this ability.


[Weak] Lava Manipulation: the ability to control and manipulate lava. It is definitely weak at the moment as she hasn't exactly tried it out due to the fact that it just appeared.


[Weak] Fire Mimicry: the ability to turn into fire, basically. Layla rarely uses this as it does trigger a lot of things. She did this twice. Once when she went through the incident, and again when she tested her skills a few years later. The pain was excruciating and she couldn't control it. Swore never to use it, and due to not practicing it, it's her weakest skill.


Strengths:


- Obviously one of them is going to be fire. If surrounded by extreme heat or fire in general, Layla's aura will explode, making her a bit more stronger than usual.


- Persuasion: Due to the fact that Layla does indeed lack in a lot of other physical strengths, she tends to use her words rather than physical force. She has a rather loud mouth and can indeed make threats that she won't live up to. But she just has a way with words that it almost sounds like she would do it.


- Flexibility. It's a hidden talent that the girl possesses. Of course, she can't stretch herself extremely, but she can do splits and jump pretty high. Nothing too special, but one can never know when it comes to use.


Weaknesses:


- Her first weakness is obviously water/ice. We all know the duality of fire and water. If Layla is surrounded by water, or even drenched with it, her powers are immediately cancelled and she is left vulnerable


- Silver. Don't ask how, nobody knows. For some reason it too can cancel out her powers.


- She lacks strength. Pure strength. She cannot fight to save her life. She lacks hand to hand combat and mainly relies on her powers. Of course, when her powers do find its limit, she's completely vulnerable.

A gorgeous girl with long thick black hair, long eyelashes, and a sculptured face, Layla appears like most Middle Eastern woman. She has somewhat tan skin, but is a bit pale as she chooses to stay out of the sun. She tends to pluck her eyebrows so they stay on point, and wears more eye makeup than any other kind. She sports a winged eyeliner everyday with a modest lip, and a bit of a contour. She has an hourglass figure that she maintains with a strict diet and an hour long exercise routine every other day.

Before the Incident: Carefree Like the Wind


What a happy child Layla was. She took the name meaning dark beauty from her grandmother, who passed away a few months before the girl was born. Layla was actually born in Cairo, Egypt, but moved to the great United States when she was just 2. Layla didn't know much about the world as she was quite sheltered as a child. Sure, she went to school, had a few friends, but she always so carefree, much like the wind. Her teachers often told her parents what a thrill it was to have such a talkative daughter who was full of many wonderful ideas. It was a shame what happened to her though.


The Incident: Don't Play with Fire


Of course it had to do with fire, how else would she have gotten her powers? Her parents always told her not the mess with the incense they often lit around their house. And Layla always wanted to help her family as much as possible. Seeing as how her parents were under so much stress one day, Layla took it upon herself to help out around the house. Keep in mind, Layla was seven at the time and was very sheltered. She didn't know how to light a match, or better yet the consequences of lighting all of them near oil. Layla was a messy child and had just come back from a play date. And in said play date, the girls were caught playing with oil. They found the properties of oil quite funny due to the fact that water could not wash it off. So, Layla, having been all oiled up, returned home to see that none of the incenses were lit up. She waited of course until her parents were busy for a few minutes, most likely working on their tax returns, when Layla decided to play with the matches. Little did she know that lighting all matches next to her oiled body would result in quite the burn. More like third degree burns across her entire body. Her parents heard her scream and immediately rushed her to the hospital where the girl was pronounced dead for thirteen minutes due to severe burns.


After the Incident: Aftershock


And you thought Layla died? Hell no. She came back to life miraculously thirteen minutes after they called her death. They didn't even notice for a minute until the nurse saw her foot move under the sheet. They patched her up using skin grafts and the girl had to stay in the hospital for a year until she healed completely. Of course she'd never heal completely and she has the scars to prove it. To this day, nobody can tell exactly how her skin was able to heal so quickly, but that'll be explained later. When Layla returned, she wasn't quite the same. She was closed off, less talkative, and more...factitious. Although she did blame herself for the incident, she just wished she could've died. Her parents tried therapy, but it only made Layla feel more like an alien.


Discovering her Powers: "WtF?!?"


It was an accident once again. Layla was an upset teenager, 14 at the time, who just wanted to wear booty shorts to school. She had already planned out her perfect back to school outfit, and by wearing them, she'd climb higher in the ranks of middle school. Now, coming from a conservative Muslim family, that was not okay. Her parents refused it. So Layla got pissed. So pissed that she took one of her jeans and held onto it. Held on it so tight, that it burned off. Just the leg part of course. This resulted in the booty shorts that cut off perfectly and had just a bit of fringe to it. She didn't know what happened, or how it happened, but when she looked down at her hands, her scars from the incident showed up. Peculiar. So the girl went to school, wearing her jeans when her parents dropped her off, and changing into her new booty shorts in the school bathroom. But the girl was smart. When she walked in with her new outfit, people loved the fashion trend. So Layla started a little business line of her own. People would ask her for shorts like her, and in exchange, they'd be her friends. Stupid, but it was middle school. So, Layla began using her new powers to burn the legs off of jeans to become popular.


This was where things got difficult. Her parents found out about her little business line and questioned how in the Hell she was able to cut all these jeans so perfectly. They though she was using a iron to do it. But then Layla quickly explained her new power, the ability to control fire...


Her parents didn't like it. They called her a child of Satan. So at age 18, she was kicked out of the house, to fend for herself. She didn't take it personally, rather she took it as motivation to help people like her, and change the world for the better.

Personality


Being at least two standard deviations above the average persons intelligence quotient, DR Irvings always found it difficult to socialise. She found herself rather introverted in public places and social events, always feeling drained after being around people. The young woman prefers to think and observe rather than speaking, only ever speaking to point out something or make a much needed sarcastic remark.


Despite not getting along with people, the doctor likes to learn more of human behaviour. She likes to watch them, be entertained by them. Having graduated from university, with her PhD in Psychology, the young woman's job is to help those who are clinically insane and unable to comprehend natural concepts. However, she believes that there is more to them than crazed psycopathic people. No, she does not only help them out of the kindness of her heart but instead mere interest.


She is a passionate woman, and firm in her beliefs. She will never be dissuaded from a decision she has made. Sometimes, despite being intelligent, she is irrational and makes decisions that may not be supported by logic. She's unable to accept her own flaws and mistakes too, which sometimes creates problems.
