In the Dojo (O.O.C. Chat - Session Zero)

In related news, any Military Weapon Proficiencies your characters have may be exchanged for either Ancient W.P.s or Modern W.P.s. (don't want a W.P. in grenade launcher you might never use? You're welcome to select another in its place!).

I am causing poor Purr much thought with my questions tonight. Sorry/not sorry?

Work-in-progress Kiseko has been posted. ^33^ I think the numbers part is done? Just need to fill out more character info.

Good to know. I’ll have to have a look at Moyo to see if that will be a good choice for him.

I almost missed this post, which is the answer I was looking for. I can get my WP staff bonus increased and expect to be able to get access to a staff easier than an assault rifle or grenade launcher. Sweet. When I’m on lunch I’ll really look at him and do some number changes.

This helps Haoyu out a lot. I have a bunch of WPs, and I can drop several of them to get the bonus to a more desired skill and not have it go to waste. Thank you, guys!

You are welcome! The more I think about this solution, the more I like it. Sure, your characters are all 1st level (as low as it gets), but to have additional proficiencies in the Skills you like not only aids in your enjoyment of your characters, but I think it potentially helps flesh them out.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, each of their weapon selections says something about their personalities. Take for example, Raph. Raphael is their brawler; he loves fighting up close and personal, yet he gives thought to defense - so the Okinawan paired sai are ideal for his personality and his way of fighting. I think each of your choices will say something about your characters too!

It's a great option to have, definitely - the usual character sheets kinda read like characters should bring an entire arsenal to the campaign, this allows for some specialization. Haven't gotten around to put any thought into my bird lately, but I'll make use of this once I do. Plus, the post alone just made me check the current sheet just now, so that in itself is progress. Hopefully, I'll manage to finally get stuff done. Things are still busy and the end of January is going to be another big struggle - but after that, there's hope on the horizon.

Glad to hear it, Sil! Nothing gets in the way of a good game like Real Life, but nothing makes a good game richer either. Plus, I would much rather hear "I am very busy at what I do" as opposed to "I had to be let go because what I do does not generate enough business!" =)

Thanks for your enthusiasm for the idea and for Other Strangeness in general, friends!

Talked about that with my team leader around Christmas. Sure, there's too much work for us and it definitely shows in the main season. And sure, there's quite some frustration with the workload just now. But we all celebrated Christmas knowing that we've got safe jobs for years to come, while others sat there, knowing there'd be no job waiting for them in the new year. Gotta be thankful for that. And hey, everyone around me agrees that I'm working too much, but also that I'm doing much better than I did for a long while.

Yes! I am prone to doing the same. But then an old work buddy of mine pulled me aside and in his Southern way told me, "(Purr), fix yourself, then fix the problem!" He elaborated. "Sure you wanna get it done now, but the job will be that much better done when you take care of yourself first." I've also learned that the work in question might suffer if I am working too much. I am no good to my team in the long-term if my wear myself out first (especially my spirit).

So I focus on myself first and the work later. (I don't know quite why I'm typing all of this - it's just something good that I want to pass on to good people I know?) Stay warm and healthy!

It's way too easy to spend hours on a problem that'll be fixed within minutes the next day. Can't claim to always find the right moment to quit for the day myself, but that takes experience. Doing well despite the stress was kind of the goal of this first season, and thus far, it's a success. Now I just gotta get back to regular posts here on rpn again.

Too true! Yes! For this, I follow a quote from Walt Disney: "Why worry? If you've done the best you can, worrying won't make it any better."

Once I've done my very best, I purposely don't think about it anymore. I put it aside. Maybe I record my solutions - write them down. This takes practice.

When I am ready, there is my solution waiting for me. And I've spent the rest of my time wisely!

Can't claim to always find the right moment to quit for the day myself, but that takes experience.
Whatever happens, don't be hard on yourself. Real Life throws enough stuff at us for that. Instead I like to say, "love yourself, forgive yourself, and look forward to tomorrow." ( This too takes practice.)

Now I just gotta get back to regular posts here on rpn again.
Looking forward to it! But no pressure from me. Post when you can, good Sil!

Psychie Psychie Sherwood Sherwood Could both of you do me the favor of describing what you've decided to change in detail here in O.O.C., please?
My brain's in one of those places where I don't know if I can find this data on your character sheets.

Also, please provide why you have focused your characters on the weapon proficiencies you've focused on?

For example: For Moyo, a staff is often seen as a useful tool, a device of non-conflict, and something monks (also peaceful) carried around hundreds of years ago. Does that have any bearing on why Moyo chose it? Or does he just like swinging around long sticks? =)

I am going to drop my two modern WPs and focus on my staff and small thrown weapon skills. This gives me a hand to hand and a ranged weapon skill, without breaking Moyo's desire to not take a life unless it is really needed. He is quite content to beat a thug to a bloody pulp, just so long as he lives.

Moyo uses a staff because it is not as singular in purpose as a sword or other bladed instrument. I seem to recall an old story about a swordsman meeting his match in a fight, not against another blademaster, but against a peasant with a staff farming implement. I don't know if it is a true story, but it is the way that Moyo looks at it. My upcoming strategy is to use the staff to give measured thwacks with the staff against someone's gun/sword/weapon hand and disarm my foes. After all, its kinda hard to shoot someone with that pistol when your hand or forearm is broken, and it doesn't kill the person being smacked.

That is precisely the kind of answer I am looking for! Thank you, Bud! =)

Thank you. I was hoping I was aiming for the right mark there.

A question. Does the stacking of the ancient WPs also add to their Parry bonus?

So far, I plan on dropping the WPs for Grenade Throwing and Assault Rifle to increase my bonus for Pole Arm and Bow. I think I’ll go ahead and keep his skill with the Shotgun, but I’ll probably drop Crossbow for the Small Thrown Weapons one.

As for why the pole arm, it is hard to say exactly where that weapon choice came to mind. It has a bit of reach to it, and the image I have in my mind is a pretty cool one.

Yep! See below:
You may select an Ancient Weapon Proficiency more than once. Doing so increases that W.P. by +1 to Strike and Parry.

"Reach" and it looks "pretty cool" are fine reasons! Thanks, Psychie!

Expect something short, speedy and flashy from Alya - for more details, I need to start choosing skills. Which is where I'm stuck for several months now, so it might be a while.

Let me know how I can help? I've made many characters over the decades.

Silanon Silanon If memory serves, you want to play a highly mobile huntress who practices Choy-Li-Fut?

Here is a list of skills I think would be handy:

Awareness (+1 to Perception rolls at 1st level and an additional +1 every 3rd level).

Navigation (not Land Navigation has that only applies to the ground and your character flies).

Detect Ambush, Detect Concealment, Prowl, Tracking, Intelligence, Wilderness Survival, various Weapon Proficiencies of a silent nature, Body Building, Swimming (include S.C.U.B.A. if you really want to be sneaky), Pilot Automobile, Basic Mechanics, at least three different languages, Research, Photography, Surveillance, Radio: Basic, Lore skills that benefit hunting, Escape Artist with Hojo-jutsu.

I feel like there's a handful that I'm missing, but that's where I'd start.

I forget if Rifts has a Hunting skill? If so, I don't mind including it in Other Strangeness.

Send like a solid collection to start with - pretty on point with my plans to have an outdoor survivalist, motorcyclist, speedy fighter and flying martial artist in one character. Thanks! I'll use this as a starting point, I believe.
