Fantasy I Was Fine Until You

Arthur seemed to believe Silas, Something that comforted the man. Causing him to visibly relax. Gawain was not in a reasonable state. It did not excuse his behavior, But Silas doubted much would get threw to him anytime soon. Yeah, It was doubtful Arthur and Gawain would do any adventuring together today. But it seemed Arthur planned to stay closer to home anyway. The subject of his sister had Silas focusing on Arthur. Silent as the other explained the situation. But Silas couldn't say he was entirely surprised by it all. It seemed Caroline would be difficult with all this. "If she refuses to go shopping, We can always carry her out. " Okay, Maybe that was extreme. But Silas didn't think Caroline remaining at the castle, Stuck in her own thoughts would do her any good.

Silas then expressed. "I can also see about getting some of her friends together to visit her tomorrow, Which should help cheer her up. " It might not fix things between her and Arthur. But Silas figured Caroline would be easier to talk to when she was happier. Her friends might also help her look at the situation with a clearer head. Though Arthur not want for any of them to be involved. Silas then murmured gently. "Just... Keep trying, And give it time. I... Thats all you can do. " Things were still fresh and she had no doubt been thinking about the matter all night. Was probable still emotional.

Speaking of Caroline, The young woman was soon on her way towards the dining room. Anxiety twisted in her stomach. Would Silas be there? Maybe scolding Arthur? The two men had been rather close friends, But Caroline feared things might not be so easy going between them. If that was the case, Well, It was surely her fault. If she had just kept Silas calm. Silas who... She slowed to a stop. Down the hall she could see the familiar figure of her father. No doubt on his way to breakfast as well. Soon she opened her mouth to call out to him. "Dadd-My king. " She soon corrected her words. Sure, only a few servants lingered around. But her father had always pushed for them to use his title in public. The man paused, Glancing back towards Caroline, And for the briefest of moments a small fond smile formed on his face. "Good morning Princess. " He greeted. Watching as she hurried to his side.

Caroline was about to utter her own good morning. Perhaps engage in small talk. But words from the previous night soon came to mind. The thought of Silas and his injuries, Her relatively peaceful relationship with her father. Once more the anxiety was in her chest. She had to say something. But why was she scared to? She soon realized she was just standing there, Saying nothing as her father looked down at her. His expression curious. And finally Caroline found her voice. "I... I... May I please speak with you privately? " Her voice a bit quiet. Causing Rayner to raise his eyebrow. But in the end he nodded, Gesturing towards a nearby room and musing. "This way my dear. " Leading the way, And Caroline hesitated a few moments before following.

Soon entering the room. Rayner closed the door behind them, Allowing them a bit of privacy. He then was musing. "Whats wrong? " His voice soft, Fondness there. Caroline was hesitant. It was hard to find the right words to say. Thoughts ran threw her mind and a part of her wanted to back out. But in the end she spoke. "I... You... I came to talk to you about Silas. " Caroline could already see the mans gaze harden. But he did not interrupt her. So Caroline continued. "You, You can't keep doing this, Hurting him. Its cruel. Last time you seriously hurt him... Daddy, Please, Just leave him be. " Caroline suddenly wished she had prepared a more proper argument ahead of time. Looking up, She could already see Rayner was not impressed.
The man then hummed. "So you think I'm a cruel king? " He questioned. Causing Caroline to tense, Quickly shaking her head. Saying. "N-No, I-" This time he interrupted her. Huffing. "You said what I did was cruel, So you clearly think I am. Tell me, Are you truly judging me? You, Of all people? " He was stepping closer, And Caroline found herself instinctively stepping back. A few words stumbling from her lips. But she was cut off by a harsh. "Silence! " Instantly causing her to quiet down. He then growled. "Silas needs to be whipped into shape, Clearly, I should have done the same with you. What a utter failure you've been. You're own husband seems disgusted with you. So much he bedded another woman. Could you not even keep his attention for a short while? " He asked, And that had Caroline wincing. Looking down at her feet. But suddenly Rayner reached forward, Grasping her harshly by the chin and forcing her to look up. "Now you criticize me? Your king? " A harsh laugh came from him, And Caroline squeaked. "Dadd-" She didn't get to finish. Rayner pulled his hand from her chin, Only to give a harsh slap. Perhaps a dangerous thing to do. Caroline was Arthur's wife after all. But the girl was unlikely to say much and Rayner knew that. Glaring down at her and growling. "You know my title, Address me as such. " He then took a step back. Turning and growling. "Useless, All of you. My advice dear, Be a good woman and keep your mouth shut from now on. " And with that, He was marching out the room. Leaving a bewildered Caroling behind. Cupping her cheek.

Caroline was worried that Silas would be scolding Arthur and whilst that had happened earlier this morning, things had quickly been resolved and the two were back to being friends. Arthur smiled in gentle amusement at the suggestion. He imagined they might get some funny looks if they carried Caroline into town. The use of ‘we’ was interesting though. Would Silas be accompanying them? That might be nice, might reassure Caroline that they were getting along and give her someone else to find comfort in. Although knowing Caroline she’d probably think Silas was there to babysit them and make sure Arthur didn’t upset her again.

”that’s a good idea“ surround her with friends. As much as he didn’t really like the idea of Caroline sharing their argument, it might do her some good. He’d not actuslly told Silas what they'd argued about and he didn’t entirely plan on it either, some of it had been a reference to stuff Silas didn’t know, like Lance, and others about standing up to her father which he was hoping to prevent. Arthur didn’t get a chance though because Caroline was confronting her father as they spoke. Rayner was so much more formal than Alexander, insisting being called by his title when Alexander was quite happy for Arthur to refer to him as his father. Alexander was also a lot more open with his affection, perfectly Fine with giving A hug in public and not withholding gentle smiles or fond words. Yes him and Arthur had been at odds when they’d parted but Arthur still thought of his father in a Positive light. When he got drunk or thought about certain things then that’s when the frustration would come out but he’d take Alexander over Rayner any day.

Now that Caroline was part of Arthur’s kingdom, Rayner did need to be careful with how he treated her. Sure she was still his daughter but she was to be Arthur’s queen which meant a move against her was a move against their kingdom and that was dangerous. If Arthur found out about that slap, that talk, he’d be outraged, although he might not know how to fully react. Rayner was a king and Arthur was not about to start a war over it. The knights would back up their prince he’d hope but how much could they do? Threaten Rayner? That would only escalate things. Arthur needed to sit down and map out what he actuslly could do here. This was the exact reason why Arthur hadn’t wanted her to confront him as well, he’d been proven right about the thin ice Caroline had been skating on. It hadn’t taken much for Rayner to turn on her. Maybe she’d be able to patch things up, this argument being recent and their animosity not breading for years like with Silas, but Caroline may not be eager to return things to how they had been with her father, or maybe she’d be more eager than ever, desperate to separate herself from the punishment Silss received. Would she even tell Arthur or Silas that she’d spoken to Rayner? Arthur was bound to bring it up, warn her against it, but she could lie and say she wouldn’t. When she came to breakfast with a red cheek though, that might alarm them. Hey, maybe she could say she fell down the stairs like Arthur had!

Caroline watched as he father left her behind in the room. Hand still cupping her cheek, Shock still filling her mind. But eventually she paused. Sniffling and holding back tears. It seemed her efforts were useless and Caroline hung her head low. Feeling guilty about the tears in her eyes. Silas had things far worse then a simple slap. But here she was getting upset. She had known her father would not take things easily. But she had to try. Except it all seemed so useless, She was useless... Letting out a breath, Caroline then was moving out the door. Trailing after her father. A part of her wanted to turn, To go back to her room. But Arthur was expecting her and it would only make things more awkward if she hid away. The dining room was not far from them now. Rayner marching in first. And well, As soon as he entered Silas could sense the irritation coming off him. But he didn't speak. Simply took his spot at the head of the table.

Caroline soon was following after him, And well, Silas knew his sister. Could tell when she was upset. Had been able to tell earlier after all. He could also see the redness to her cheek and the sight had him narrowing his eyes. Caroline was then moving to take her seat beside her husband. Staring down at her plate and a certain awkward silence filled the air. That is, Until Rayner spoke up. "Prince Arthur, I believe we need to have a little talk. The servants told me you were walking about rather drunk last night. Its hardly fitting for a prince to be stumbling around like a fool, No? " Luckily he didn't know all that Arthur had gotten up to.

Silas frowned, Wrinkling his nose, But he chose to ignore his father. The man was focused on Arthur for the moment. So Silas took the chance to lean closer towards Caroline. murmuring quietly. "Caroline, What happened? " But she didn't reply. Simply looked down at her plate. Which well, Silas found a bit frustrating. Sadly, Silas wasn't given much longer to question her. For Rayner was then addressing him. "I assume you're responsible in some way? You seem to know how to get others in trouble with you. " It wasn't really a question. More him just idly musing to himself.

They were soon joined by the king and princess and along with them came some undeniable tension. Arthur was frowning straight away. Normally Caroline and Rayner were rather cordial with each other, apparently not this morning and was it just him or was her cheek redder than usual? He might’ve thought it was her makeup had her other cheek not been pale in comparison. Surely….no….his gaze flickered to Rayner accusingly at the idea. He’d told Caroline to ignore him, to not aggravate Rayner. It appeared like she’d not taken his advice. He felt terrible that he’d put the idea in her head but he also felt furious that Rayner would hurt Caroline. Of course he didn’t know what had really gone on but he felt his guess was probably pretty good.

Arthur narrowed his eyes at Rayner, body already stiff in tension. He felt like a coiled spring, ready to launch but he could hardly launch himself at Rayner. He really missed sparring, maybe he should find Leo today. “Oh really?” Arthur asked, keeping his voice as innocent as possible even though there was an undeniable edge to it. “I shall note that for next time. Must be one of the cultural differences” he commented breezily. Well, if they thought his kingdom were a bunch savages and barbarians, might as well play up to.

Rayner’s attention was switching to Silas and Arthur used that as an opportunity to reach out and grab one of Caroline’s hands, squeezing it and giving her a concerned look. They really needed to talk. “You can’t honestly blame Silas, he’s not my keeper and I wasn’t with him for most of the night anyway.” He justified. “I do have other friends” he insisted, such as the knights, not that he’d spent much time with them either but Rayner didn’t need to know that. “What delayed you two to breakfast, having a little chat? Hmm” Arthur questioned, words innocuous enough but his eyes challenging. Would Rayner admit to hurting Caroline? Silas was one thing but Caroline? Arthur felt the rest of their stay was going to be even more dire if Rayner also had it out for Caroline. Hey, on the bright side, she might not be so disappointed to leave once their trip was up. Arthur went to brush a soothing thumb against Caroline’s hand he was holding. ”I’m sure you two Have a lot to talk about. You must have missed Caroline yes? I know she’s all grown up now and married but I imagine she’ll always be your baby?” Yeah he was going for the guilt, if Rayner was even capable of feeling it. How could he hurt someone he was supposed to adore? Who he’d seen grow up, who’d missed him and longed for him? “Can I ask, who looks more like your wife? Caroline or Silas?” And it was something he was curious about but he was trying to evoke some sense of shame out of Rayner. He didn’t really know how to get him to feel but talking about the late queen had gotten something out of him before, even if it had been jealousy. But where there was jealousy, there was often something else driving it.

Arthur did not seem phased by Rayner's words. Probable had been expecting some sort of comment from the man. Soon he was focusing on his wife, And Caroline froze as she felt his touch. Looking up towards him briefly, Unable to help the shame in her gaze before she was looking back down. But she couldn't bring herself to remove her hand from Arthur's. Arthur was soon addressing Rayner, Causing the man to tilt his head. Not looking exactly convinced, Yeah, He hadn't seen Arthur around many other then Silas. Debated asking him about who he was with. See if he could prove he had friends. But he decided against it, Instead simply curious about where Arthur's questioning was going. "Lady Caroline simply wished to talk to me, I'm sure she can explain why if she so wishes. " And he didn't even bother looking at Caroline. Focused on Arthur.

Silas by now had caught on, Wasn't completely sure what had happened, But knew Rayner had upset Caroline in some way. Was glaring daggers at the man. But Rayner ignore him. Answering. "Perhaps, But I trusted she was fulfilling her duties. Something we all must do. I fear though I might have spoiled her far to much while she was growing up. Perhaps now that she's back I can rectify that a bit? " And it was hard not to notice the threat in his words. But it was mostly empty, Caroline was Arthur's pregnant wife. He couldn't do much to her without risking earning the anger of the kingdom.

Rayner narrowed his eyes at the question. But he seemed willing to answer. Answering honestly. "Silas, He's just like his mother. Has her temper as well. " Neither sibling looked too much like him though. Sure, They shared some features. But it was clear they took after there mother. By now, Caroline had regained a bit of her composure, Reaching forward to tug gently at Arthur's sleeve. A small attempt to draw his attention away from Rayner. This line of questioning would not go down well. Rayner then continued. "Caroline's always been far more well behaved. Well, Until she started living among your people. I suppose she must be adapting to that cultural difference. " He spoke, Tone slightly mocking.

The shame in Caroline’s gaze was heartbreaking, that she felt such a thing over standing up for her brother, that Rayner had made her feel that way. Caroline might not wish to explain but Arthur had to ask her her what had happened, whether she told him or not…. He clearly would not react well to it but he already hated Rayner so what more was a little slap to add to the plate? Except it wasn't a little slap, it was setting a precedent and Arthur didn't want to know where this road led.

The threat was crystal clear and Rayner had implied such a thing before but never had Arthur seen any evidence of him actually hurting Caroline. Arthur had to bite his tongue to stay seated and not lash out, to insult his people and his wife in the same breath! He’d felt Caroline’s tug but he felt numb to it, Rayner could not continue to get away with acting like this. Arthur, childish as it might be, wished his mother were here. She had a sharp tongue, might try to put Rayner in his place and now he also commiserated with his mother, to be of high status but to have no power in this, to only be able to spit venomous words rather than throw a punch.

”you think so? I’m glad she’s adapting then. But she is still rather prim, perhaps we should throw a wild party and get up to some proper debauchery to make sure she’ll be a fit queen” Arthur mused. “We can go streaking, that might be a nice way to help her fully adapt!” He felt like he was going insane sitting here having to listen to Rayner be so cruel to his own children, so outright rude. “I should write to my father really, tell him how our stay has gone so far, and you know he’s awfully fond of Caroline, part of the reason he was eager to send us here” besides the obvious. “He knew she’d be missing you. I’m sure he’d like to know how you’re getting on, how Caroline is enjoying our stay. Especially with her now pregnant, it’s our top priority to keep her happy and comfortable.” Arthur smiled, bright and menacing. “We wouldn’t want anything to jeopardise that. And I’m sure our knights would be eager to protect the princess and our future heir should they catch wind of any threat” Arthur did not have much leverage, did not want to start a war, he figured neither of them did, but Rayner had to remember that should he push things too far, he had a considerable number of knights in his castle from a kingdom known for their fighting capability. Now Arthur wasn’t saying they'd stage a coup but well, Silas would likely be a more lenient king who still had ties to their kingdom.

Arthur seemed to ignore Caroline's attempts to draw his attention. No, He was mad, Rightfully so. Rayner seemed if anything amused by Arthur. Soon expressing. "Oh, I had no idea streaking was apart of your culture! Well, Who am I to impose our traditions here on you? Strip then, I'm sure Caroline would be happy to follow your lead. " He urged. Leaning back in his seat. Crossing his arms. Arthur had his own threats though. Seemed to want to write back home. Tell everything to Alexander. But Rayner was not so worried. He then mused. "I'm sure everyone would of course be eager to protect her. " He agreed. But his gaze then moved to Caroline. Saying. "Luckily there is hardly any threat she needs to be protected from here. Isn't that right? " Suddenly turning the spotlight on Caroline. They could all guess what had happened. It was clear. But it was only a guess unless Caroline spoke up. And she flinched at her fathers gaze.

Caroline was put in a awkward position. Perhaps she should have spoke up, But what good would that cause? It would only further anger everyone at the table. Would cause further problems and Caroline didn't want that. She just wanted things to settle down. So she then murmured quietly. "...Yes My king. I... Everythings been good here. " And her voice was shakey, No matter how firmly she tried to speak. She knew they would be able to see threw the lie. But it was enough. Rayner grinned at her. Soon looking towards Arthur and humming. "See, I can't think of a better place for you and her to be. " His voice carried a mocking tone.

Throughout all this, Silas sat seething. Glaring daggers at his father. Frustrated by Caroline's silence. He was soon preparing to speak up. To say harsh words. But then Caroline was talking. Urging Arthur. "A-Arthur, Perhaps we should excuse ourselves. The food is making me a little nauseous. " She tried. A attempt to offer a escape for them all. She wasn't sure if Arthur would listen. Oh she felt sick. Rayner seemed willing to dismiss them. Waving his hand and saying. "Go if you wish. But I do expect you to follow your own traditions from now on. Perhaps at the next party? "

Rayner was so infuriating and he knew it, enjoyed making Arthur angry. Caroline didn’t speak up and Arthur didn’t blame her but it did annoy him, that she didn’t feel free to say whatever her father had done or said to her. All of a sudden Caroline was the enemy to Rayner. Her voice shook and Arthur squeezed her hand again to try and reassure her. He really needed to find a solution to Rayner. They shouldn’t aggravate him but Arthur also knew that Rayner would find a reason no matter what to annoy them, put them on edge.

Caroline was right though, maybe they should excuse themselves. He didn’t want to leave Silas alone with Rayner though, he wouldn’t abandon him. “Oh, i figured we would give the next party a kiss, don’t want to put a strain on Caroline or embarass you“ Arthur insisted. “Until I learn your culture actually I should probably refrain from public events” Arthur continued, they were stressful but he figured they’d still be able to come, there were only so many he could avoid.

”Silas, can you help me with Caroline?” He asked. “Why don’t you take her to our room And I’ll see if the medic had anything to help her feel better” he suggested. It wasn’t really a three person job but he wanted to get Silas out of there. Arthur stood up and tried to usher them out. He didn’t have to go to the medic but he happily would if Caroline wanted him too. “Rayner” Arthur bid farewell, still tense but eager to get out of there. Yes, theyd make sure Caroline was alright and then they could go shopping and relax, a bit of retail therapy, Silas probably should come to so all of them could get along and unwind.

Arthur seemed willing to listen to Caroline's desire to leave luckily. Arthur was even encouraging Silas to join them, And the man hesitated a bit. A part of him wanted to stay and give Rayner harsh words. But he knew that would only make things worse. So he slowly nodded, Getting to his feet. Luckily, Rayner made no move to stop them. Only gave a sharp smile to Arthur. Nodding his head slightly as to give his own farewell. then the small group was soon leaving that man behind. As soon as they left the room, Caroline felt it was a bit easier to breath. Walking closely next to her husband. But, Things weren't over. As soon as they were a decent distance Silas was turning to her. Concern clear on his face.

"Caroline, What happened? " He prompted, His stare was intense and Caroline shifted. Once more staring down at her feet and mumbling. "Nothing. " She expressed. But Silas obviously did not believe her words. Staring down at her, And eventually Caroline mumbled quietly. "It... It was just a little slap. " Tears already showing in her eyes. Regretting the words as soon as they came out of her mouth. Talking about such would only cause more trouble. Besides, A slap was nothing! Silas had gone threw far worse. But well, Silas looked furious. Was already moving to try and storm back towards the dining room.

Alas he didn't get far, Caroline was reaching out and taking his arm. Murmuring. "Silas, Stop, It... Its not a big deal. " She tried, Causing Silas to turn on her. Saying in disbelief. "Not a big deal? He hit you! " He thought that was a very big deal. But Caroline just shifted. Tears were still in her eyes and suddenly Silas found his gaze softening. "Oh Caroline... " He began. Stepping closer and wrapping his arms around her in a small hug. It didn't take long before Caroline was pressing her face against his chest. Struggling to keep herself from crying. Silas was comforting though. Hugging her gently. His gaze though was soon drifting up towards Arthur. Concern clear on his face.

They all managed to escape snd Arthur was glad Silas chose to leave rather than hash jf out with his father, they didn’t need more to worry about today. Of course once they were out Silas was questioning what had happened. Caroline wasn’t eager to share the details but she was soon confirming that her father had hit her. Now, Arthur knew there must have been something said or done to get Rayner to turn on her. He was a bit reluctant to ask her what that was but only because he felt he knew the answer.

Arthur had a thoughtful look on his face as the siblings hugged. They couldn’t allow this to escalate but Arthur didn’t know if they could fix it. He met Silas’ gaze and sighed, he had to ask the obvious question. “What did you say to Rayner?” And he wasn’t throwing around blame, this was Rayner’s fault, but she must have said something to set him off. “We should avoid him” Arthur decided, he didn’t know if Caroline wanted to get back into his good books but he thought it’d be best to fly under his radar for a bit if they could. Maybe a little hard when he sought them out for their trouble.

”he shouldn’t have touched you“ Arthur clarified. “And I don’t like the setting of this precedent. You should steer clear of him unless you have someone with you“ he advised. “The knights will protect you” Rayner would be more hesitant to hurt her in the presence of others, especially people from Arthur’s kingdom. It was ridiculous though that she had to be guarded from her own father in her home. “I’m sorry this has happened” Arthur found himself apologising, aware that he’d put the dangerous idea in her head that had led them here. ”I should’ve kept my mouth shut.“ Maybe he’d be able to fix things for her by talking to Rayner in his own, asking forgiveness for her and saying she was acting for him, being a good wife and doing her duties by him. He didn’t know if it would work but hopefully it’d at least shift the blame.

Arthur was soon questioning what had set Rayner off, And Caroline sniffled, Pulling away from Silas. She wiped her eyes before confessing. "I... I tried to talk to him about Silas. About him leaving him be. " She explained, And the words caused Silas to tense. Soon expressing. "Caroline, Why the hell would you do that? " Alarm in his voice, Silas knew there father. Caroline speaking up would only cause more trouble. He could see Caroline tense a bit at his words. Arthur then was suggesting guards, And honestly, That wasn't a bad idea at all. Silas thus was suggesting. "You could assign one of your knights to guard her perhaps? " Maybe that was over kill. But Silas didn't trust Caroline to seek out help if she needed it. No, She might keep quiet if anything happened.

Arthur kept talking and Silas paused. He was saying he should have kept his mouth shut. Had he encouraged this? Caroline then was saying. "N-No... You were right. I-I should do something. I... If I spoke up more then... " She trailed off, And well, Annoyance showed on Silas's face. "No you should not speak up more. Caroline! Its bad enough he goes after me, I don't want you to be a target. Because trust me, He would make you a target! And you! " He turned his attention to Arthur. Glaring at the man and huffing. "Did you put this idea in her head? " He asked, Clearly not happy at all. Gosh, What all had Arthur said to Caroline?

Caroline was trying to smooth things over. Saying. "He.. He was right though. I should have done something, I should do more. " She was trying to explain. Confirming Silas's suspicions with her words. And Silas pinched the bridge of his nose. Letting out a long breath. He then grumbled. "Caroline, No, You are not to get involved in things between me and Rayner, And you Arthur. What the hell? " Had he said such things last night? Actually, That made sense, He'd been rather drunk. Silas was still annoyed though at both of them.

Arthur’s guess had been right. Rayner didn’t appreciate anyone meddling in his torture of Silas and not even his daughter was safe from his ire. Why would she do that? Oh Arthur could think of one reason and he hadn’t really wanted Silas to know but that had been back when he thought he could prevent it. Arthur nodded in agreement, he’d speak to the knights. They might not understand why she needed to be guarded but he couldn’t see them disagreeing, he’d have to make it clear that she was to be supervised at all times, even with the king, especially with the king.

Arthur glanced at Silas guiltily as he was rightfully accused. Silas deserved to be annoyed at his involvement, angry for getting Caroline riled up and making herself a target for Rayner. “I did suggest it” he admitted. “I was frustrated, I don’t want you to be his victim forever” Arthur said. “But I was very drunk and in the morning I realised my mistake and told you not to pursue it” Arthur switched his gaze to Caroline. He’d said to drop it, but she only seemed to listen to the worst parts of what he said. “I didn’t want exactly this to happen” he sighed.

”your father clearly had no limits on who he will hurt. You’re protected somewhat by now being part of my kingdom but….I don’t want you alone with him” Arthur ordered. He looked back at Silas. “I know it was stupid of me to say, I wasn’t thinking, I was just angry about it all… I shouldn’t have out that idea in her head though” he sighed. Caroline probably felt guilted by him, maybe wanted to please him, help out her brother, she was close to Rayner, had been close to Rayner, likely hadn’t realised how easy it would be for him to turn on her. “Why don’t we get out of the castle, get some distance from him“ Arthur suggested. “We can go shopping like I suggested and I’ll grab a knight, let them know you should be guarded“ best not to take any chances. He should maybe seek out Kay too, see if he had learnt anything they could blackmail Rayner with. The castle was only getting more dangerous the longer they stayed here. Oh, if she was guarded, it might be a bit difficult for Arthur to try and improve her love life but that was a bridge he’d get over once he got to it.

Caroline couldn't help but feel bad as both Arthur and Silas talked. Staring down at her feet and feeling rather childish. Of course her attempts had failed. She probable had only made things worse. Perhaps had she been a bit more diplomatic she'd have managed to convince her father. Arthur was even suggesting she have constant guards. Something that caused her to open her mouth at first to argue. But she soon thought better of it and simply nodded. Keeping her gaze low. Silas seemed pacified luckily by Arthur's explanation. He was still annoyed with him of course. But he was willing to forgive him for the moment. Arthur was then encouraging they leave, And that wasn't a bad idea. It might do good for them to lay low in town for a bit. Silas figured some distance from Rayner would do them all good.

Silas thus mused. "Thats a good idea. C'mon Caroline. We can see if that little bakery is still in town and show Arthur it. " They hadn't exactly gotten to eat much for breakfast and Caroline still looked sad. Seeming uncertain. But eventually she relented and gave a small nod. Wiping her eyes. Silas then murmured. "Lets go Caroline, We can get the horses ready. " If they were bringing along another knight, Then Silas figured it best not to sneak out. Might cause some questions to be asked.

Silas then looked up towards Arthur. And mused gently. "We can meet you outside if you want to go fetch one of your knights. " Silas hadn't exactly had the most pleasant time around many of them. Didn't want to risk running into Gawain again. Thus he figured such was probable a task best left to Arthur. Hopefully whoever Arthur got would be decent company.

Luckily things didn’t escalate into an argument, Silas was willing to accept Arthur’s error in judgement even if it still annoyed him. Arthur smiled gently at the suggestion, nodding in agreement, that sounded nice. He was actually starving but he wouldn’t tell them that although they might guess when he devoured a whole loaf of bread by himself. “I’ll see you outside” he agreed and went off to find the knights. He knew he needed to apologise to Ethan as well but he didn’t want to keep them waiting too long snd he figured his apology to Ethan would have to be big.

He made his way to the knight’s quarters and bumped into Percival. Fantastic, he’d be alright company even if Caroline remembered him from him scolding them. “Can you accompany me, Silas and Caroline to town? I think it’s best if she has a guard” Arthur explained and Percival gave him a curious look, eyes squinted slightly. Arthur was a knight, knew how to look after himself, and Caroline had never wanted a guard before, in fact he found it odd that Arthur was asking for them to be supervised, seemed a bit unusual. He shook his head anyway “ask Galehaut, I’m busy“ Percival said and Arthur really did not want to so went to Protest. Percival put a hand up to stop his complaining. “Uh uh, I have plans. Besides, Galehaut is on babysitting duty this week, we all know that” and Percival flashed him a smile before leaving. Babysitting duty? Seemed the knights had already split supervising duty. Just Arthur’s luck that it was Galehaut.

Arrhur did consider finding Vere, asking if he’d like to come along, he was sure the other boy would love to get out of the castle and explore but he’d seemed shy in front of Silas last time and this was more about cheering up Caroline. So, he went to find Galehaut instead. Galehaut did agree to accompany but he came with a smirk. At least Caroline would be around so he’d behave hopefully. Or maybe it’d be worse. “You heal fast” Galehaut commented, poking Arthur in the neck which the prince scowled at and batted his hand away before they were soon arriving at the stables. “Found someone” Arthur called. At least it was better than Gawain though!

Silas had soon set out to the stables, Going about preparing the horses while he waited for Arthur. Talking gently to Caroline, Hopeful to improve her mood a bit. Though she was clearly still out of it and upset over the slap. Silas was chattering when he caught sight of Arthur approaching. Someone in tow. Except, The sight of Galehaut had him tensing. Sure, Galehaut was not awful as far as Silas could tell. But the man had seen the damage his father had inflicted on him before. It was a uncomfortable thought and Silas struggled to be rid of it. Instead he then said. "Mmm... You certainly seem fond of him lately. " Silas noted. A slightly amused expression on his face. But he didn't elaborate. Caroline didn't know the details of Galehaut and Arthur's relationship after all. In fact, Caroline hadn't interacted much with Galehaut, Despite him being one of the knights tasked with escorting the couple here. But to be fair, Caroline had interacted mostly with just her ladies during there travels.

Still, She gave him a polite nod. While Silas explained. "We decided to go and have breakfast in town. " Uncertain of how much Arthur had told. Galehaut might have more questions. But Silas didn't bother explaining more. Instead moving to his own horse and pulling himself up into the saddle. Waiting only a few moments for the others to prepare themselves and get into there own saddles before he gestured for them to follow. "This way, I know a shortcut. " He explained. While they weren't exactly hiding themselves. It probable was best they didn't draw to much attention still. So Silas figured he'd take them down some of the more quieter backroads.

Silas then expressed. "After, We can go shopping. " He tried. Smiling towards Caroline who was hurrying to catch up towards Silas on her own horse. Soon walking at his side. She then quietly pointed out. "I... I don't know. Surely it might be better to just show Arthur the city? " But Silas waved off her concerns. Musing. "We are showing him the city, We'll be showing him the best shops in town. " That seemed to quiet her down.

Galehaut had not interacted with Caroline a lot, she’d mainly been around her ladies, Arthur, Lance or even Gaheris. Galehaut was a friend of Lance’s though so maybe they’d have some things in common. Galehaut tended to be polite, he just enjoyed annoying Arthur in particular. Speaking of Arthur, he shot Silas an unamused glare. He didn’t need to be teased by them both, but he wasn’t about to mention to him that apparently the knights had decided on a ‘babysitting’ rota. ”I’m good company” Galehaut insisted as he mounted a horse and set to follow them. Arthur too got on a horse although maybe he hadn’t thought this through as ouch that hurt. He grit his teeth and followed after them though, eventually settling into it.

”I’m happy to see other parts of the city as well but after we go shopping” Arthur spoke up, he didn’t know what else there was to see, Silas had shown him the old temple, he’d seen a couple bars, he imagined there were some seedy dives but they wouldn’t go there, what else was there? Maybe a museum or something he supposed but he couldn’t imagine Caroline was too into that. “Take me to your favourite places” he insisted. “I want to treat you” Caroline, as a princess, no doubt got treated all the time but he’d never really bought anything for her and whilst she could afford things herself, it was more the gesture. Being doted on would do her some good. Maybe they Should see about some sort of spa treatment or something for her to perk her back up.

”so princess” Galehaut spoke up. “How’s married life treating you?” He didnt glance at Arthur even if it was about him somewhat, keeping his smile friendly and inviting. He couldn’t imagine she’d be too honest and say she’d had a massive row with Arthur, that she found her marriage loveless, although Galehaut obviously knew certain details but he was curious as to how she’d respond. “Is Arthur everything you dreamed of?” He did glance at Arthur then. “It’s alright, you can say no” a conspiratorial wink. “i Won’t tell. I hope at least that things are okay between you” After Morgan, a lot of marriages might not be alright but it probably helped that Caroline at this stage didn’t expect to be loved by Arthur in a conventional way. “I’ll admit I don’t have tons of experience with women, I guess I’m like Arthur that way, so I’d need any wife of mine to spell most things out but I don’t have to worry about that for a while and I guess if I needed any advice I’d probably ask Lance. He’s a good friend, although I would say a bit too involved with the ladies” Galehaut seemed happy to chat away which might do good to distract Caroline. “Galahad was a shock, cute though. You know, I actually knew Lance back when he was called Galahad, funny how time flies”

Caroline couldn't help but tense slightly at Arthur's words. Looking down. She couldn't imagine her own preferred places being of much interest to Arthur. Despite his insistence. But she decided to keep quiet on the matter. Besides, She was soon glancing up when Galehaut addressed her. Pausing at his questions and for a brief moment glancing towards Arthur. She then was saying softly. "He.. It has been nice, Arthur is a sweet gentleman. " She expressed. Was Arthur what she had dreamed of? He certainly was beautiful to look at. But there was no spark. No real draw between them.

Galehaut didn't linger to long on such things, Seemed happy to talk. And Caroline couldn't help but say. "I'm surprised to hear that, I'm sure you must have plenty of ladies swooning over you. I' sure whoever you marry will certainly be a very happy lady. " Though his mention of Lance brought happier memories. Ones that made her cheeks turn a little red. Things were over between her and Lance, A sad thought when Caroline lingered on it. Would things begin again when she met him again? No... They couldn't, She had to put that behind her. She was Arthur's wife and she needed to be a loyal wife to him. Still, She found herself saying fondly. "Lance is a sweet man. "

Galehaut did seem to have been friendly with Lance, And Caroline couldn't help but ask. "May I ask, What inspired him to change his name? " He hadn't always been known as Lance. What had he been like back then? When he was still known as Galahad? Silas at that point was glancing back towards Galehaut. Curiously musing. "You sound like your rather close with him. " Silas noted.

Caroline have a stunning review of her marriage. Not really, it was rather lacklustre and whilst Galehaut hadn’t expected sunshine and rainbows he’d thought maybe she’d have more to say. “You’re too kind princess” Galehaut said with a smile. He didn’t plan on getting married any time soon although he was sure his parents would love him too but he’d rather be free a bit longer before being tied down to a woman he didn’t love. “He can be” Galehaut conceded as she talked about Lance being sweet and she was soon asking about him.

”he wanted a fresh start I believe” Galehaut explained. “Galahad had too many ties to his homeland, to his mother and to everything else he’d left behind. I think changing his name gave him the opportunity to seal the past off and focus on the future, not let it weigh him down. Plus I imagine changing his name annoyed his father a little which back in those days was a win. Do you wanna know why he chose the name Lance? Someone was ribbing him, called him ‘Sir Lancealot’ on account of his relationship with the ladies. Lance, being the nuisance he is, took quite the shine to the name and henceforth he is now ’Lance’.” Galehaut had changed his name, had never used to be called Galehaut before he’d met Lance, or well, Galahad, but he wasn’t going to tell them that or explain himself.

Galehaut glanced at Silas at the question. “Oh, we used to be inseparable” he explained. “We met when I was what? 15 or 16 and ever since he introduced himself he was getting me into trouble or taking me on adventures” He’d been swept away by Lance’s enthusiasm and confidence. “You think he’s cocky now? You should’ve seen him back then. Still a squire but better than most fully fledged knights, looks coming in from puberty and his father’s money and status. He had just enough lax supervision as well to constantly be getting up to trouble, whether with girls or with a sword. I met him in church though. Knights aren’t exactly the sort of people my parents would normally hang around but two weary travellers with faith in God? They invited Lance and his father over for dinner, let them stay a few nights until they sorted themselves a place. I’m sure they probably regret that now, Lance is the reason I wanted to become a knight and I don’t think they’ve forgiven him for It” Galehaut shrugged, at least his parents could live through his sister instead. “Admittedly I don’t see him as much nowadays but I would say we’re still close, or we are when he’s not being an arse” Galehaut continued. “Maybe it’s just because I’ve known him so long but sometimes he’s so bull-headed and stubborn it drives me crazy. Especially when he’s being an idiot and won’t listen to reason. Let’s hope Galahad doesn’t inherit that trait“ Galehaut would say that Lance didn’t take criticism the best and maybe Caroline would remember that Galehaut had been the one to having a shouting match with Lance when they’d met up on the journey. “But yeah, we’re close. I’m normally away on peace missions though, I’m good at languages and I’m a diplomat’s son so I get the boring missions. More than Lance gets though, he’s good at languages too but I’m not sure Antonio trusts him. Im better at languages though, actually I was the one who taught Lance Italian, he still hates when I correct his form, especially when he can’t do the same to me about my Spanish”

Galehaut was soon enough speaking of Lance. A fondness clear in his voice. It seemed Lance had always been very much of a ladies man. Had he already moved on from her? Surely he had, Lance had plenty of options after all. Caroline was not the only one interested in Galehaut's stories. Silas listened curiously and snickered a bit. It sounded very much like Lance was a bit of trouble maker. A side of him that Silas had been unable to see. But one could put that down as the result of the journey. It had been stressful. Caroline then found herself asking. "Do... Do you think he'll ever settle down? " Surely he would, He had Galahad to think about now. She was about to say more, Ask more questions, When she noticed Silas's horse slowing, And she was soon moving to match his pace.

It seemed they had reached the bakery. The street was quiet, But such was never a busy road and it was early in the morning. Silas was then sliding off his horse. Glancing towards Caroline and musing. "Why don't you and Galehaut go inside and order something. Me and Arthur can find a place to tie off the horses. " It was cold outside after all, He figured Caroline might be happy to hurry on inside where it was warm. But the girl seemed to hesitate for a moment before nodding. Climbing off her horse.

Silas then looked towards Galehaut. Telling him. "She likes the muffins they serve here. Make sure she gets one. " He didn't trust Caroline to order something for herself. She was not in the best of moods. His words seemed to cause Caroline's cheeks to turn red. But Silas ignored her. Simply lifting his hand to shoo her away before going to move the horses away. Caroline luckily was somewhat listening to him. After a few moments of hesitation beginning to head inside.

The group seemed happy to listen to Galehaut’s stories. Funny how they all seemed fond of Lance in their own way, even if the group had not much else in common at least they had that. Galehaut considered the question. It’s not like he’d say Lance didn’t want someone for life, but he’d also say his friend had too much fun exploring his options. But he had Galahad now, and he wouldn’t be young forever, he figured Lance would eventually tire of chasing women and just want to be with somebody who knew him. “Some day” Galehaut said. “But I couldn't say when. He enjoys finding someone new to gush about. Lance loves a lot, but he also loves a lot.” Galehaut murmured making the distinction between quantity and recipients.

They were soon at the bakery and Galehaut nodded at Silas, climbing off his horse and passing the reigns to Arthur who had also dismounted. Galehaut glanced at Caroline curiously but didn’t argue and followed the princess inside. “It’s good you have your brother looking out for you” Galehaut told her. ”I miss my sister but you never stop being a big brother. She’s probably glad I’m not around actually, pestering her new husband and making sure he’s treating her right. You get that problem with Arthur and Silas? They seem to get on alright, I expected more friction” he confessed. There had been at first but Galehaut had not been about then.

Arthur looked to Silas as he led the horses. “I asked Percival to come just for the record but he was busy” Arthur wanted it said that Galehaut had not been his first choice. “She’s still not eager to do anything she likes just because I’m here” Arthur commented glumly. “It’s such a struggle trying to get her to do things that make her happy. No matter how much I tell her that her being happy makes me happy” he sighed. “But thank you for the help. She’s listening at least even if she’s reluctant” they would go shopping, even if it killed Arthur. They would buy her a pretty dress and hopefully, maybe, they’d get a real smile out of her today.

Galehaut's words were perhaps a bit worrying to Caroline. Perhaps she was just a fling for Lance? It was entirely possible. Perhaps was for the best. Had Caroline and him been able to be together, Would they have been? Or would his interest fade? Caroline forced herself to brush the thoughts from her mind as they walked. Focusing on Galehaut. Caroline then murmured softly. "He's always looked after me. " Sometimes it had been rather annoying growing up. But Caroline had never doubted her brothers affections for her. He then was asking about his relationship with Arthur. And Caroline shifted a bit. "I... There has been a bit at times. " She was reminded of this morning. Silas storming off to confront Arthur. Oh, she hoped he had not been too harsh. Caroline then expressed. "But, They seem to have quickly become close. " The two seemed to be friends. Or well, Caroline thought such was the case.

Meanwhile, Silas soon was leading Arthur and the horses along. Soon finding a decent enough place to leave the animals. His attention drifting towards Arthur. He then grinned at Arthur. "You don't have to explain anything to me. You're clearly keen on him. " His words were teasingly. Luckily Silas did not seem the jealous type. No, Instead he was musing. "Can't blame you. He is pretty to look at. " Perhaps he wasn't Silas's preferred type. But he'd be lying if he said the man wasn't handsome.

Silas then was a bit more serious. Looking at Arthur. "Don't worry, She'll cheer up. I'm sure of it. " But Arthur likely wasn't just referring to today. Caroline seemed to have a tendency of doubting herself. Of thinking Arthur would rather be away from her. Last night had only made the problem worse. Silas did not have a fix for that. He then murmured softly. "Just.. Be with her, I'm sure in the end that'll help. " It was the only solution he could think of. But Silas then glanced towards the bakery. Murmuring. "I still can't believe father hit her. " His voice quiet. Silas had never seen the king harm Caroline. The mans wrath had always been directed at him. Silas guessed things had changed. But that wasn't the only thing, Caroline was married to Arthur, She was also pregnant. Such was a incredibly risky thing to do.

Galehaut didn’t know Silas too well, had heard several complaints about him and a whole host or rumours but he seemed like an alright brother. He also seemed like he could be a nuisance but who was Galehaut to judge? “Mmm, they do seem close” Galehaut agreed. “Might be more troublesome than them being at odds” he joked, “now you’ve got two men teamed up to take care of you” That wasn’t sure a bad thing, it just might be more difficult for her to get away with things like sulking.

Arthur rolled his eyes as Silas teased him. He was not keen on Galehaut, although he could see how it looked that way and he did appreciate Galehaut not just turning him away or for being too much of a nightmare but he guessed they’d see how today went. And oh, Galehaut had made it on to Arthur’s list of pretty boys. “He is more fun when he’s not speaking” Arthur murmured in reply to Galehaut being called pretty. Silas probably shouldn’t mention that around him though, might give Galehaut a big head.

He nodded. “I’m going to try” he agreed. “I offered to move back in, spend thr night with her, but she didn’t really give me a reply. I guess maybe I just shouldn’t wait for an answer, just do these things” Caroline probably wouldn’t give him confirmation for a lot, which did worry Arthur somewhat, he didn’t want to annoy her or tread on her toes and he was conscious that she wouldn’t say yes and as such she might not also say no. “I can believe it” Arthur said. “Your father seems to love having power over people and he hates you. I thought maybe it’d take more for him to turn on her but I’m not surprised he did. I don’t know if she’ll be able to get back on his good side, not even sure she wants to, but it might be safer for her to try. He shouldn’t touch her, not really, she’s too important to my kingdom but he’s having too much fun toeing the line and reminding us of how little power we actually hold. What can I really do if he touches her again? I don’t want to go to war and neither does he, so he’ll probably hurt her just enough for it to be seen as a reprimand but not enough for it to be considered abusive” Some people might just think Caroline had been rude, Rayner was still a king and her father, some people would think it was his right to put her back in her place. “This is another way to hurt you too, he knows you’re protective of her. I don’t know if he’ll stop if she doesn’t provoke him or if he’ll seek her out now” Hopefully the guards should help.

Caroline couldn't help but shift slightly as Galehaut spoke. Two men teamed up to take care of her. Caroline wasn't sure if that was the case, If anything she worried Arthur was more bothered by her presence. She kept making mistakes after all. It was frustrating. But she bit her tongue. Besides, Soon she found herself distracted when a voice spoke up. "Hi! How can I help you? " And she was glancing forward. A young man stood behind the counter. Peering curiously at the two. Well, Seemed they should place there orders.

--
Silas couldn't help but find Arthur's behavior amusing. He was curious though if Arthur would pursue Galehaut again. Of course he would! He had even invited him out. Silas so planned to tease the other more. But the subject was soon a more serious one. Arthur returning to staying with Caroline at night might help. But Silas thought he might miss Arthur's company at night. Arthur also seemed unsurprised by Rayner's behavior. But what could they do? Neither wanted a war as Arthur said and unless Rayner took things to far then there was little they could do. Silas then frowned for a moment before muttering. "Things are only going to get worse, Arent they? " Silas then looked to Arthur and after a couple moments suggested. "Perhaps, It would be good to get away from the castle for a couple days? It would give us all more breathing room. I doubt we could go away long. But... There are other towns not to far off, We can make the claim of wanting to visit one. " Silas was not so keen on travelling again. But the towns wouldn't be too far. At least it would give them a little breather.

By then Silas had tied the horses, And was making his way towards the bakery. He didn't want to leave Caroline for too long. Sadly, That ment Arthur and his conversation should perhaps be set aside for a slightly later time. Pushing open the door. He was grateful to find the building was warm on the inside. Looking forward, He could see Galehaut and Caroline seemed to already be making there requests. So, Silas moved towards a nearby table to sit.

There really was a simple solution to Silas missing him at night, they should all just cuddle. Arthur could be in the middle with an arm around each of them. Plus, Caroline would get extra comfort from her brother being there as well! Win win. Arthur feared Silas was right in terms of the situation, things likely would only get worse. Rayner couldn’t unslap Caroline but he could continue to hurt her and he guessed it was that initial breaking of trust that would not be repairable. Silas was suggesting they retreat, go visit another city and get away from Rayner a bit. Arthur wasn't sure how to take that, he didn’t really want Rayner thinking he won, knowing he’d got to them, but on the other hand it was pretty obvious and some space could do them some good, give the situation time to calm down. As well, it might be good to establish a firmer bond with Caroline. ”maybe” Arthur agreed, “it might be useful to ensure Caroline is on our side” which wasn’t to say he thought she’d be doing anything nefarious for her father, just that she might cover up for him. She might not let them know if and when Rayner hurt her again and Arthur didn’t want that, he needed to know if Rayner even so much as threatened a hair on her head.

Arthur tied up the horses and followed Silas back to the bakery, joining him at the table, glad to be somewhere actually warm for once. Galehaut was with Caroline, making sure she at least ordered herself a muffin. He figured Arthur probably wasn’t too fussy, neither was he himself so their part of the order didn’t matter too much. “So, I take it most of the places we’re going today are going to be clothes shops?” Arthur guessed. As he’d mentioned, he could do with some new clothes and he’d like to get Caroline a dress but he wondered if there was anything else lined up. Maybe he’d be able to get her some jewellery. Oh… “I don’t suppose there are any shops that sell tanks or cages about? Some sort of animal carrier or something?“ He remembered promising Caroline that once they’d settled down she could have her own reptile. Maybe now would be a good chance to get one and make her happy. The climate was cold but there must be something out here and it’d be nice for her to take a little bit of home back with her when they eventually returned to his kingdom.

Galehaut and Caroline were soon coming to join Them though and Arthur gave his wife a big smile, reaching a hand out to take hers and squeeze it. “Let’s hope it’s as nice as you remember” she’d not been home in a while but he couldn’t imagine it’d changed that much. “You have good taste though so I’m sure everything here is nice“ He trusted her. “And because of your good taste, you must promise to not let me go back without some new clothes that have been approved by you” he didn’t want to show her up and wear something horrible. Maybe they could get matching outfits, hoe cute would that be. Like a real couple! ”we can have a look at baby things as well” he suggested. He knew she obviously wasnt very far into her pregnancy but it might be good to look, plus he should probably get something for Morgan’s child and he could even get something for Theo or his new little sibling. Wow, the number of babies about were really piling up.

Arthur seemed to guess they'd probable spend most of the day shopping for clothes. Which... Was probable a good guess. But his question caused Silas to tilt his head curiously. He then hummed. "I'm sure theres something around. I know some of the noble ladies like to keep rabbits as pets. So they might have something ment for them. " It would likely be a bit difficult to find a reptile. But it would no doubt be a sweet gift. One Caroline would likely love. Such talks of gifts likely needed to be put on hold for the moment as Caroline and Galehaut joined the two's side. Caroline sliding into the seat next to Arthur. Her cheeks turning slightly red at Arthur's touch.

Arthur seemed to trust that the food would be good. Caroline and Silas both were fond of the place afterall. But he then was continuing on. Talking about clothes and Caroline found her gaze flickering towards Silas. Soon expressing. "Honestly, Silas would perhaps be better at that. He's always been good at such things. " Silas waved such opinions off. Musing. "Thats only because I look good in everything. " His tone teasing. Nope, Caroline wasn't wiggling out of this. Arthur then was bringing up baby things, And Caroline suddenly remembered that such was very much something they'd have to worry about soon.

Had Morgan had her child yet? What of her own? If it was Lance's... Caroline hoped such would not be obvious. But surely others would realize eventually. How long could that be kept a secret. Once more Silas was pulling her out of her thoughts. "I'm sure we can find a store with baby things. I can also see if I can search the castle for some of our old toys. I know we had to have saved some of them. " They were probably all in storage somewhere. But one of the servants might have a idea where to look. The idea was a nice one and Caroline found herself asking. "Do you think you could find your stuffed animals? I remember you had a bunch of them when we were small. "
