Maki is a wild child from birth. She's a biter, a fighter and she doesn't like to be fucked with. Perhaps a symptom of being forced to grow up too fast, Maki has some unresolved anger that has followed her throughout life. In a way, anger is all she has to cling to. She can't do much but be miserable or be angry, and she'd rather be angry than miserable. Of course, there's more to her than simply being angry all the time, not that she wants anyone to know about the soft heart underneath all of that filth.
She speaks her mind with the knowledge that nobody else will do it for her, and only cries when nobody can see. She believes -- perhaps misguidedly -- that her traumatic experiences have molded her into a stronger person. She thinks being traumatized is something neither she nor almost anyone else should complain about, especially not to her, because she doesn't really care. This is every man for themself.

Maki was the child of an unlucky streetwalker, and it only got worse from there.
Her mother was a prostitute, and a pretty miserable pill to boot. From day one she was unhappy to be with child, and often left Maki unsupervised to do her jobs for a few hours at a time. By age 5, Maki was more or less expected to have some level of self-sufficiency, which usually led to her being hungry and lonely. She didn't make friends easy once she began school, finding that she had no idea how to communicate with other people.
It was worst when her mother would drink. She'd do one of two things. Sometimes, she'd cry, and apologize profusely for the way she's treated her only daughter, an apology Maki could barely parse. But other times, she'd get angry. She'd grab Maki by the hair and hurt her, and there wasn't much Maki could do but hope that it'd stop.
Section B
At the age of 11, Maki dropped a tiny wooden block through a portal and caused it to appear on the other side of the room. She didn't know what to make of it. It was fun, but she was terrified to tell her mother.
She realized this new discovery of hers was extremely useful. Food that was on too-high shelves could now be brought down easily. The bread from the cupboard made a fine dinner. Suddenly her toys could play back with her, though she'd always know where they were hiding during their games of hide-and-go-seek. If her back itched, she could simply reach her hand through one portal and out another to scratch it herself.
It wasn't like life became easy. She still got hit and she still couldn't make any friends, but she felt like there was something special about her. In the library, she'd been reading books that were all about strong little girls like her realizing they had something special about them and being whisked away to some magical world.
She had the brilliant idea to teleport her mother's beer cans under the bed, and when her mother couldn't find them, she flew into a rage. She grabbed the now-14-year-old Maki and prepared to punch her squarely in the face... only for her arm to go through a portal to the opposite wall. The hit missed Maki's face. Her mother dropped her to the floor and walked away, leaving Maki shaken, terrified and confused.

The next few times Maki got in trouble, something similar happened. She'd narrowly protect herself with her new ability. She felt invincible.
Overcome with confidence, she suddenly seemed different. She was strutting and everyone could see that she'd changed. She was someone else entirely. People began paying attention to her, and she wasn't afraid. Her mother grew more distant, replacing abuse with neglect, and Maki became her own mother. And it continued this way for a few years. Maki never attended college, instead working at a pet shop after graduation for a few years.
She ran into an old classmate whose name she never bothered to remember. Tall, light-skinned, kind of good-looking. But Maki was very, very, VERY not into men, and she made that fact clear. The classmate wouldn't take "no" for an answer, and pushed her down in a train stop bathroom. The next thing she knew, he was on the tracks, mashed into a pulp.
The witnesses knew what they saw, and Maki saw no reason to hide it. After all, it was an act of self-defense. Suddenly she got caught up in a whirlwind of discussion with the police and the Heroes of Tomorrow, who seemed to genuinely believe she had some kind of untapped superhero potential if she could just control herself a bit better. Some even argued that she did a good thing -- and they were totally right.
Who was she to turn down such a kind offer? It's better than jail.

Micro-Portals - Maki can create two small portals at a time that are connected. They have to be within about twenty feet of where she's standing.
strengths
Durability - Like it or not, getting your ass kicked when you're five means you either have to toughen up or give in, and since Maki's still alive, she obviously chose the latter.
Fighting Prowess - She's also pretty good at dishing out hits, despite being a bit on the small side a jab from those hands hurts like hell.
Dirty Fighter - Maki does NOT believe in "street rules". She will bite, scratch, aim for the groin, just about anything to get an upper hand. We love a girl with no integrity.
Creative - With a largely non-offensive power like portal generation, she has to get pretty creative in how to effectively utilize it.

Poor Impulse Control - If Maki sees shit she doesn't like, she's going to deal with it, whether you want her to or not.
Terrible Team Player - Her brief "social butterfly" era did NOT make her more trusting.
But Batman doesn't kill people! - Maki will kill people. A lot. Some people just haven't earned their living rights.
No Survival Instinct - Maki can and will go into situations that will probably get her killed if she feels like it.

Maki normally carries a butterfly knife with her, as well as a taser that she got online. Aside from that, she has like, a ton of candy in her pockets for no discernible reason. Okay, there is a reason, it's for her, because she's hungry.
