The mage was defenseless without a puppet to control. He brought his hands up defensively, but of course it wasn't enough. Callum's sword, powered by his rage, easily beheaded the mage, breaking his spell on Emmalia and over the whole city.

Emmalia had been sufficiently dazed, but she could tell when the spell broke. She had been struggling to stand, but now freed, she dropped to the ground, panting quietly and shaking.

Callum remained still, watching as the mages lifeless body and head fell to the ground. His sword dripped with blood. He nearly began stabbing his body from there, but his rage was sedated for the time being. After a while, he dropped his sword and went to Emmalia. "Are you alright?" He asked, lifting her upper body off the ground and holding her.

Em shook her head and curled up against Callum, still with her hands lightly over her ears. "H-he made me kill her, I didn't want to, I didn't even want her blood, and he made me kill two other people too, but I just killed that little girl, oh gods...." She couldn't even pay attention to the black blood dripping from the cut and burn on her face and wrist, or the similar wounds on her collarbone and hands.

Callum kept his arms around Emmalia and held her tight. "Don't think about that, it wasn't you. No one could've stopped themselves if they were in your position. But what matters if we've killed him, and we've stopped countless others from falling under the same trap."

Em pressed her head in against his chest plate. "You killed him. Not me." She closed her eyes and said very quietly, "I'm so sorry I attacked you. I tried to fight him, I couldn't... I wasn't strong enough."

"Not everyone is strong enough to fight everything. Hell, if you or him were a monster I'd be more than dead. I don't know how to fight them like you do. It's okay to not be great at everything. Sometimes you just need a helping hand. Or someone to talk to. Both make a wonderful difference."

Em nodded slightly, closing her ey . She felt weak, and the pain of her injuries was actually starting to become noticeable. Very quietly, she mumbled, "I didn't want the blood... I tried really hard not to like how it tasted." It was clear she meant the first girl the mage had made her kill, and the child.

"You did good, Lily Pad." Callum told her quietly. "I'm proud of you, love. We'll get you back to the Inn and from there, we'll leave for the castle in the morning. You need rest."

Em smiled slightly and relaxed in his arms, barely awake. Sure she was covered in red and black blood, was burned and cut, and had recently been mentally invaded, but at least she could relax in her husband's arms

Callum hoisted Emmalia up in his arms, beginning to walk back to the city. "You're sure you're not too hurt are you? I don't want you being a hero and trying to suck it up."

Very quietly, Em said, "The wounds are painful, and I'm tired and dizzy, but you're already carrying me." It sounded like she was falling asleep, which she was.

Cal brought her back to the Inn and set her down in the bed, joining her in sleeping after getting halfway through taking his armor off. It was a long day.

Em, throughout the night, moved closer to Callum, eventually nestling into the crook of his neck. At some point, her lips brushed against his skin, and she woke up with a gasp, pulling away from him with her hand over her mouth.

Callum stirred in his sleep, the armor that he didn't bother taking off clanking a bit with his arms pulling Emmalia's waist in closer subconsciously.

Em let him pull her close and was extraordinarily tempted to just give in and be close to him again, but she was scared, now. She carefully moved his arms off of her waist and got out of bed to sit in the chair of the room, curled up with a blanket over her.

Callum attempted to pull her close again, but his arms pulled in nothing but the air. After a moment, he woke up from the lack of the entity that was usually beside him when he slept. "Emmalia...?" He asked, sitting up and rubbing his eyes.

She shook her head and meekly said, "No. I just remembered, I bit you, really recently. I don't want to even think that I could..." She couldn't even finish her sentence, so she just admitted, "I'm scared, Cal. I would never bite you again, but the fact that I did, I tasted your blood, that's twice now, I-I don't know."

After a moment of silence, claim beckoned for her to come back to the bed. "Emmalia, I sleep next to you every night. I can't sleep without you. I put more faith and trust into you than anyone else I've ever known Em. I'm undead practically, I'll be perfectly fine. Now, come on. I want to be with my wife."

The last thing that he said was what convinced her. She stood and went back to the bed, moving close to him and laying down. She hesitated, then let herself put her head into the crook of his neck, as she normally did. It felt fantastic, being comfortable with him again. Very lightly, she kissed his collarbone, then settled down and closed her eyes.

Callum held her in his arms tight, letting her know she was protected. He wanted Emmalia to be as comfortable as possible with him, especially when she was like this. "Goodnight, love." He said quietly and kissed her head before slowly closing his eyes.

Em closed her eyes tight and listened to his breathing, feeling the rise and fall of his chest, and fell asleep a few moments later.

In the morning, Em still slept, even after Callum woke. Her body was exhausted from drinking so much rich human blood, and from internally fighting the mage.
