  as previously stated this will be an application-based roleplay, but roles are gonna work a bit differently- there is a character summary and their alias, but aside from those two, you have complete free reign over the character- name, age, gender, you can even tweak parts of the bio and persona as long as they line up with the character blurb! consider it like one big au. (yes, i shamelessly copy-pasted this from the ic, sue me.)

  Cassidy was born into a world where violence was both profession and survival, the product of a cold, calculated partnership between Lady Vic and Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. Neither of her parents were interested in raising a child out of love. Cassidy was an asset from the moment she was born, bred and molded for a life of ruthlessness and control.
  From the earliest moments of her life, Cassidy was put into an existence defined by brutality. Lady Vic believed in raising Cassidy as an extension of her family’s tradition of assassins. She began training Cassidy as soon as the girl could stand, focusing on physical prowess, agility, and the art of combat. Her mother was strict, distant, and unemotional, drilling Cassidy day in and day out. There were no words of encouragement, no moments of comfort. Only constant reminders that emotions were a weakness and weakness was not tolerated.
  Lady Vic made sure Cassidy learned to kill before she learned to do anything else. Every movement had to be precise, every decision calculated. She drilled the art of reading body language into Cassidy's mind so that she could predict her opponent's actions before they even made them. It wasn’t long before she became a master at understanding movement, gesture, and intentions. This became her language, one she would rely on more than spoken words.   While Lady Vic focused on Cassidy’s physical skills, Black Mask played his part in shaping her mind. Roman was known for his cruelty and he made sure that Cassidy would understand the power of fear and domination. When she wasn’t under her mother’s harsh training, she was being taught by her father how to control others, through fear, through violence, and through manipulation.
  He would make her go through psychological tests, forcing her to witness or even participate in the interrogation and torture of his enemies. Black Mask treated Cassidy not as a daughter but as a weapon in his arsenal. He taught her that the world ran on power and those who couldn’t claim it were doomed to be crushed beneath it. He showed no affection, only a sadistic pride when she followed his orders perfectly.   Cassidy had no childhood, not in the traditional way. She grew up surrounded by death and violence, never knowing what it was like to be a carefree, happy child. She learned early on to never show fear or weakness in front of her parents or anyone else. Both Lady Vic and Black Mask taught her that emotions were vulnerabilities and Cassidy buried them deep inside herself, locking away any desire for comfort or normalcy. She grew silent, not because she didn’t want to speak, but because her language had become one of body movement and action. Words seemed unnecessary and in her world, they were.
  For years, Cassidy was locked in a brutal cycle, caught between her mother’s cold precision and her father’s cruel domination. She was trained, tested, and pushed beyond her limits, and for a long time, she didn’t question it. She believed this was her purpose, to be the weapon her parents wanted her to be, to continue the legacy of power and fear.
  As Cassidy grew older, something inside her began to turn. The emptiness, the hollow existence she had been molded into began to feel unbearable. She started to recognize the cost of her parents’ ways. The loss of her own identity, the loss of her humanity.   The final crack was on her sixteenth birthday, when her father attempted to initiate her into his crime syndicate by forcing her to kill an innocent man as a way to show her loyalty. Cassidy hesitated, something Roman had never expected. For the first time, Cassidy disobeyed orders. She refused, standing in silence, keeping her head held high. Roman attacked her in rage, intending to punish her for going against him, but Cassidy fought back with all the years of training and her sharpened mind.
  She escaped that night, disappearing from Gotham’s underworld, leaving behind the life her parents had forced on her. Even though she had broken free physically, Cassidy knew she wasn’t free mentally.   Cassidy wandered for months, unsure of her place in the world. She had been raised to be a weapon, not a person, and she struggled to understand who she was outside of her parents' influence. Deep down, she knew she didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. She wanted to be something different, something better.
  That’s when she found herself drawn to Gotham’s vigilantes. Watching the Batfamily from the shadows, she saw what real heroes were like. They weren’t perfect but they fought for something greater than themselves. Cassidy wanted that. She wanted to make up for all the violence she had caused, for the lives she had taken under her parents’ orders.
  It was during this time that she crossed paths with Batman. Sensing the pain and potential in her, Batman took Cassidy under his wing. She became the next Batgirl, taking on the iconic mantle in an attempt to get rid of her violent past. As Batgirl, Cassidy fought crime with determination, going head-to-head with the same criminals her parents were associated with.
  It wasn’t easy at all. Years of training had conditioned her to be a killer, not a protector. She struggled with her instincts, constantly battling the urge to fall back into old habits.   Her time as Batgirl didn’t go without its challenges. Cassidy found it difficult to balance the expectations of the Batgirl identity with her own internal struggles. Even though she excelled in combat and crime-fighting, the weight of her past, her trauma, and her emotional barriers made her feel distant from the heroic symbol Batgirl represented. She couldn’t fully take on the role and deep down, she felt like she was running away from her true self by taking on the Batgirl mantle. She couldn't be Batgirl, and not know who she is at the same time – it just didn’t work.
  Batman recognized this internal conflict and allowed her to resign the Batgirl title. He knew she needed to figure out who she was. Fighting was all Cassidy knew though, it had been her whole life. She may have not known who she was, but she knew she didn’t want to give up trying to redeem herself. She took on a new identity, one that felt more aligned with her, Orphan. A name that reflected her severed ties to her past and her parents.
  As Orphan, Cassidy no longer felt the need to be a symbol like Batgirl. Instead, she focused on becoming the best version of herself, making up for her dark past by protecting Gotham’s vulnerable citizens in her own way. Cassidy was trying to figure everything out, but she continues to face both physical and mental barriers. She remains haunted by the sins of her past and strives every day to be the hero Gotham needs, even as she battles herself within. Her journey toward becoming a hero wasn’t just about fighting crime, it was about finding herself.     Jay's mind is a jumbled mess of memories. He remembers little of his past and the bits he does remember are often confused or conflated. The only thing he knows is how to fight, which he does with clinical and deadly precision. Jay's current state is comparable to a malfunctioning computer, whilst the hardware works perfectly fine, the software is buggy and returns nothing but error messages.

    After the death of their parents, Jay and his older brother, Danny, were left to fend for themselves on Gotham's streets. In an effort to make more money for them, Danny started working for the well-known gangster Charles Knight and Jay would often help him by acting as lookout. On Jay's twelfth birthday, his brother gave him a red hoodie as a birthday present. It was a few sizes too big but nonetheless it became Jay's most prized possession. Unfortunately though, Danny was killed shortly after during an attack on Knight by Killer Croc, who, at the time, had set out to become Gotham's most powerful underworld figure and wanted the gangster's seat at the Powers Club, an exclusive Gentlemen's club with ties to the Gotham underworld.
    
    Jay found himself adrift after the death of Danny and Knight until he crossed paths with Charles Knight’s daughter, Natalia. A former street orphan herself, she saw a reflection of her own past in Jay and took him in, raising him like her father had once raised her. Natalia and her lover Anton Knight, the biological son of Charles Knight, became a surrogate family for Jay and for a time he was happy. However, In order to maintain their lifestyle, Anton operated as the costumed criminal known as the Thief of Night and he decided to take Jay under his wing, training him to become his partner in crime. At some point, Anton managed to steal a batsuit and he and Jay, dressed as Robin, began a campaign to discredit Batman's name and reputation until Anton was apprehended by the caped crusader and sent to prison.
    
    With Anton gone, Natalia sought a new way to maintain her life of luxury. She targeted Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s most eligible bachelor, and the two entered into a romantic relationship. Over time, what started as a calculated plot evolved into genuine affection. Bruce and Natalia grew close, and through their bond, Jay formed a connection with Bruce as well, finding in him the positive role model he desperately needed. However, Anton broke out of prison and quickly discovered that Natalia and Jay had moved on. Hurt by their rejection, he swore revenge on them and became the Night-Slayer. Events quickly escalated with Anton capturing Natalia and Jay with the intent of murdering them both. Batman arrived and confronted him but not before Anton managed to fatally stab Natalia. Batman and the Night-Slayer fought and both combatants appeared evenly matched until Jay managed to slip free of his bonds. Assisting the caped crusader, Anton was stopped and taken to the authorities, before being committed to Arkham Asylum.
    
    Following the tragic death of Natalia, Bruce legally adopted Jay and, with Dick's blessing, selected him to become the new Robin. Jay was grieving deeply following his surrogate mother's passing and Bruce feared that, without the proper guidance and discipline, his anger and grief would send him down a dark path. With his new identity as Robin, Jay joined Batman and stopped several criminals including Crazy Quilt, Doctor Fang, Catman, Scarecrow, Mister Freeze, and many others.
    
    On his last mission as Robin, he assisted Batman in defeating Ra's al Ghul and a cadre of other criminals, who were released by Ra's to kill Batman. They tracked him down to an old decrepit windmill where Ra's was housing one of his Lazarus Pits. Approaching the windmill, they used explosive charges to blast away at the foundation, providing them with a quick entrance. Batman and Ra's fought one another but Ra's had immersed himself in the pit while still alive, becoming ten times as strong as normal. With Batman completely outmatched, Jay took drastic action, tackling Ra's and sending both of them plunging into the pit. Batman tried to retrieve Jay but the explosives had greatly weakened the structure of the windmill, and with the building threatening to collapse on top of them, he had little choice but to make his escape.
    
    Batman searched the rubble afterwards but could find no sign of Jay and he was presumed dead. Unbeknownst to Batman, Talia Al Ghul had managed to retrieve Jay before the collapse of the windmill via a secret tunnel. Talia took Jay in and after spending a year in a coma, Jay awoke but the mental damage from the magic of the pit appeared to be extensive and he suffered from amnesia. From muscle memory, Jay remembered how to fight but could remember little else. The only thing he could remember was the image of a red hoodie and its curious importance to him.
    
    With the League of Assassins in disarray following Ra's apparent death a year before, Talia exploited Jay's condition to help her bring the League under her control and he became her chief enforcer, the "Red Hooded Ninja," or simply the "Red Hood". With Jay eliminating any who opposed her, Talia soon established herself as the League's new leader. With his debt to Talia paid, Jay was released from her service and he began travelling in an attempt to piece together his past, only to find himself relentlessly pursued by a splinter faction of the League.
    
    Eventually, Jay found refuge with the Sloan Circus, where, inspired by vague memories of someone from his past whom he couldn’t quite recall, he became an aerialist and trapeze artist known as the "Flying Todd." It was at the circus where Jay met Waldo the Clown, an old friend of Dick Grayson. Waldo’s stories of Dick began to stir Jay’s lost memories and the mention of Dick and Bruce Wayne triggered flashes of his past. Realizing there was much more to his history than he could remember, Jay left the circus to return to Gotham, determined to uncover the truth about his past and his connection to Bruce and Dick. Unfortunately, upon his return, Jay discovered that Batman had gone missing, leaving him with even more questions than answers.

    Terry McGinnis was the product of genetic engineering by one of Batman's first villains; the brilliant, albeit deranged, Hugo Strange. After several encounters with the Dark Knight towards the beginning of his career, Strange quickly deduced that Bruce Wayne was Batman and wondered if he could recreate the conditions that led to Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. Strange began by taking Bruce Wayne's DNA from a sample of his blood left behind during his encounter with his Monster Men and created from it a nanotech solution that was able to rewrite a male human's reproductive material into an exact copy of Bruce Wayne's.
    
    Strange looked for a suitable couple in Gotham City with a psychological profile that was nearly identical to Bruce's parents, and found the McGinnis' to be the perfect subjects. Warren McGinnis thought he was getting a flu shot at Graytowers Clinic, when in reality he was secretly given the injection by Strange, using the alias of Dr. Todhunter, with the nanotech solution so that his offspring would actually be that of Bruce's in the biological sense. A year later, Mary McGinnis gave birth to Terry, who possessed half his mother's genetic material and half of Bruce's.
    
    With the genetic element accomplished, Strange had intended to monitor Terry’s upbringing and engineer a tragedy similar to Bruce’s, the death of Terry’s parents, hoping it would push him to become the next Dark Knight. However, Strange’s apparent death during a battle with Batman derailed the experiment, leaving Terry to grow up without the guiding hand of Strange’s machinations.
    
    Sometime after his brother was born, Terry's parents divorced following accusations of infidelity and he found himself involved with small-time gangs during his early teenage years. By the time he was 15, Terry had developed into a defiant, thrill-seeking teenager, frequently clashing with the law. One night, after getting involved in a fight with a local gang, Terry was arrested. The incident caused a major blow-up between Terry and his father who threatened to send him to a disciplinary school. Terry stormed out of the house and when he returned later that night, he found the apartment trashed and his father dead.
    
    Initially, the police ruled it as a robbery gone wrong, but Terry, wracked with guilt and convinced there was more to the story, sought answers. Uncovering a disk that Warren had taken from his employer, Derek Powers, the head of Powers Technology, Terry examined it and discovered evidence of Powers' ties with a secret society supposedly inside Gotham's walls. Confronting Powers with the information, Terry became the target of feral monsters and they chased him to the outskirts of Gotham City. Terry sought refuge at Wayne Manor, where Bruce Wayne appeared and defeated the creatures but was wounded in the process. Terry helped Wayne into the mansion and then stumbled upon the entrance to the Batcave.
    
    Despite the close encounter, Terry would not rest until he brought Powers' to justice and Bruce, aware that Terry would remain a target, decided to take him on as the latest Robin under the pretext of hiring him as his personal assistant. Terry would run various errands and took care of various tasks for Bruce in his civilian identity. In part, this was a cover for secretly training him as the latest Robin. Tim Drake is a lean, mean fighting machine on the cusp of adulthood. He's lithe and flexible, with a fit runner's body that is made for agility and subtle strength. Shirt off, Tim's body is littered with scars from his vigilante lifestyle, perhaps the most prominent being the scar that runs the length of his abdomen from his time spent overseas.

His hair is black and mostly straight, naturally falling into a centre part. When he grows it out, it tends to develop a slight outward curl at the end, though it's rare that he lets his hair get more than a little shaggy. His eyes are an icy blue, and his complexion is nearly translucent, like fine porcelain. The benefit of living in a place like Gotham is that Tim doesn't have to worry too much about frying in the sun, but when he goes anywhere that doesn't have a permanently gloomy atmosphere, he burns in minutes.

In dressing himself as a civilian, Tim swings wildly between skatepark grunge and business casual depending on whether he's on or off the clock. He's got a collection of 90s alt-rock band tees that he rotates through and several pairs of well-loved jeans.

Backstory

Tim grew up in a brownstone rowhouse in Old Gotham. His parents, Janet and Jack Drake, travelled for work, so Tim spent much of his childhood alone. Despite the apparent parental neglect, Tim had a loving relationship with his parents. They often sent postcards while abroad and called home weekly to check in on Tim, and while they were home in Gotham, they spent much of their time doting on their son.


For his ninth birthday, his father bought him an expensive SLR camera and lens kit, which Tim used to his heart's content. Without regular parental supervision, Tim would often find himself on the roof of his rowhouse, taking photos of Batman and Robin whenever they passed through his neighbourhood. His obsession with the Dynamic Duo grew as time progressed, and during the summers, he'd spend most of his nights outside tracking the pair across Gotham.

It was around this time when he connected the dots between The Flying Graysons and Robin when the young vigilante executed a perfect quadruple somersault while in costume. With some careful research, Tim figured out that Richard "Dick" Grayson was Robin! Not long after, Tim correctly guessed that Batman must be the eccentric socialite Bruce Wayne.

He kept his secret knowledge to himself, amusing himself instead by following the vigilantes around Gotham and documenting candid moments between the duo. He watched as the relationship between Bruce and Dick became strained, eventually leading to what Tim could only guess was Robin hanging up his cape after witnessing a few particularly nasty arguments between the two.

Through his lens, he witnessed the rise and fall of the second Robin, the decline in Batman's care and compassion, and the subsequent darkness that fell upon Gotham. It was then that he decided to take matters into his own hands, so he looked up Dick Grayson's address and tracked the former Robin down, intent on persuading Dick to retake the mantle.

Dick... did not take Tim up on the challenge.

Instead, at the tender age of 12-almost-13, Tim marched up to Wayne Manor and formally introduced himself, announcing his intent with references and charts to back up his claims. It did not go well.

Only after Tim proved himself in the field by rescuing Nightwing and Batman from the hands of Two-Face (with Alfred's help) did Batman-Bruce-Wayne take him seriously. His training began in earnest just after his thirteenth birthday.

When Tim was fourteen, his parents were involved in a terrible accident while overseas, killing his mother and putting his father in a coma. The tragic event left Tim essentially without guardianship, but when Bruce found out, he stepped in and opened his home to Tim until his father recovered... or succumbed. As a distraction from the turn of events, Tim travelled to Paris to study under several martial arts masters and spent the better part of a year honing his skills before returning to Gotham when he got the news that his father had woken up.

Tim convinced his father to sell the brownstone in Old Gotham and buy a much more wheelchair-accessible house in Bristol with the ulterior motive of Tim being closer to the Batcave. Throughout Jack's recovery, Tim kept his identity as Robin a secret, but the guilt weighed heavily on Tim. After a particularly close near-miss, Tim was forced to come clean to his father about his secret identity. Jack, worried about his son's well-being, forbade Tim from going out as Robin anymore, and Tim agreed to the conditions without hesitation. He hung up his cape but occasionally broke his promise to Jack when things were especially dire.

Tim was sixteen when his father was murdered in his home by Captain Boomerang. He'd been called out to patrol that night, leaving Jack home alone. A trip of Tim's security system was the first indication that something was wrong. Tim raced home to ensure everything was alright, but when he got there, it was too late. Jack was lying in a pool of blood, lifeless, a sharpened steel boomerang sticking out of his chest.

After this point, a sea-change in Tim occurred. He became serious, determined, and single-minded, a mirror of Batman from all those years ago after the loss of Jason. He threw himself wholly into his work and honed his detective skills into something almost lethal because he wasn't sure he wanted to keep going without it.

For a long year, Tim spiralled into something darker. Tim finally felt something other than grief and anger when he stumbled across documentation of Lazarus Pits and their effects. There was a chance that he could bring his parents back. His journey of self-discovery took him on a globe-trotting adventure of peril and truth. After a near-death experience where he was practically eviscerated, Tim realised the moral and ethical dilemma of raising the dead. It could not be undone.

Upon his return to Gotham at the age of eighteen after spending a year convalescing overseas, Tim rebranded himself as Red Robin. He debuted not as a sidekick but as a hero in his own right.

Personality

If Tim were a weapon, he'd be a spear. He's sharp, focused and extremely agile when solving puzzles and hunting for clues. Not much stands in his way if he sets his mind to it. He'd definitely be a supervillain if he wanted to. Fortunately for the world, he's got his eye on making the world a better place for everyone, even if building a giant space laser would be cool.

Tim is smart. This is an understatement. He sees the world as a series of puzzles to solve, his social interactions as NPC dialogue options which certainly have some interesting outcomes in the real world. He's perhaps not the most socially adept individual, but many people find his awkwardness endearing, which is probably how he managed to score a few girlfriends while in high school.

Tim is kind. He cares about civilians and wants to help. If there is any call to action, Tim will be there! He founded a breakfast club in middle school and frequently centres any of his school projects around social justice issues. He has big ideas and big feelings.

  Stephanie is a force of nature when she wants to be, having quite the big personality. She's a rebel with a cause, a firecracker, a wild child. Sith her tendency towards sarcasm and biting wit, she makes quite the first impression. But once you get to know her, you'll discover how incredibly caring and compassionate she is. She cares deeply about others and wants to make a positive difference in the world, trusting her gut and acting on instinct (whether that's the best option or not). She has a strong moral compass and refuses to do anything she doesn't agree with, fighting back against attempts to get her to follow in line. This strong desire to do the right thing and fearlessness comes with a scathing anger at times too. Stephanie can be an emotional person, especially about things close to her heart, and can get angered easily at times. However, she's generally quite bubbly and optimistic, being a real chatterbox when on subjects she's interested in (or even subjects she isn't, girl cannot shut her mouth lol).
  
  Unlike most of the bat family, she didn't get much formal training, either teaching herself necessary skills or having brief sessions with the more seasoned heroes in her quest to become a crime-fighter. Stephanie is quite smart and a quick learner, able to catch on fast in new situations and think on her feet. She is also creative, able to think of new ways to solve a problem or combining things in ways that others might not have thought at first. She's resourceful, observant, and quick on the uptake. It's hard to give Steph a puzzle she can't solve. When she can't figure something out, she can get incredibly stubborn, digging her heels in until she gets what she wants. Once she's made her mind up, good luck changing it. Unfortunately, sometimes her impulsiveness gets the better of her and she makes a decision that might not be the best in the moment, but typically sticks to her guns unless she is certain she's wrong. Arguing with her will rarely solve these problems, only causing her to dig her heels in further. But she's not unreasonable. If you come at her with the right approach, Stephanie will consider what you've said and maybe turn around.
  
  When it comes to crime-fighting itself, Stephanie is definitely the vigilante sort. She's brave, bordering on reckless, and hates to ask anyone to do something that she wouldn't do herself. Despite her home-taught fighting itself, she's a very quick and agile person, being prone to stealth and speed. However, she can make clumsy mistakes due to her lack of formal training. Partially due to her physical weakness in that area, she has somewhat low self-esteem (though she will definitely hide it with exaggerated jokes about how awesome and perfect she is).   Stephanie grew up middle class, having a somewhat ordinary life for her early childhood. That was, until her father's television series got canceled, which led him to spiral into a life of crime in an attempt to provide for her family as their finances quickly dwindled. But Arthur Brown couldn't even do that right, being a half-rate criminal and an embarrassment. Stephanie began to resent her father as his antics did nothing to help her family, and only hurt other people in the process.
  
  She got into the vigilante game because of her father, taking up the mantel of Spoiler in order to "spoil" her father's crimes after he became Cluemaster, both trying to keep citizens safe and get revenge on her loser of a father. It was during this time that she got onto Batman's radar. Though she was trying to take on a villain of Batman's, she did not play by his rules. Eventually, in an attempt to get Cluemaster to stop with his villainy, Stephanie unmasked herself as his daughter. When this still didn't stop Cluemaster, Stephanie nearly killed the man before Batman intervened, furious with him on a level she had been angry at anyone before.
  
  After deciding to let her father live, he was put in jail and Stephanie tried to go on with her life. She still had a year of high school left and presumably college after that, after all. She found allies in the Birds of Prey, working closely with Dinah Lance / Black Canary. She honed her fighting skills and become even more interested in crime and stopping it, even going so far as to applying to major in criminal forensics in college. She realized that there was something about making a difference that made her feel complete and helped with the issues she had with her father. After her less than stellar relationship with him, she realized that she didn't want any other kids to have to go through what she went through, and vowed to ensure that no other children would have to take the burden of supervillain relatives or loved ones upon their shoulders. Her lofty goals were not so easy to fulfill, however.
  
  Eventually, Stephanie's father escaped jail again, getting in with other villains such as the Injustice League. Despite his claims that after he got their family out of debt, he would go clean and start being an honest man and better father, his actions said otherwise. While Stephanie was working to stop him again, she sought out Batman's help, briefly taking on the mantel of Robin. However, her methods were far too reckless for him, and she ended up getting fired from the position after nearly dying. In spite of Stephanie's attempts to stop her father and those he was working with, Arthur eventually died before Stephanie could even get to him, giving her mixed feelings. She decided to quit being a vigilante for the time being, focusing solely on finishing high school and then starting college that coming fall. Though she was able to live an approximation of a normal life for a bit, she felt a bit conflicted and empty without the vigilante side of her life. After she saw Batman and his allies on trouble, she rushed to help, only to get told off by Batman again. Though she had been helpful, she was always seen as too reckless, too much of a hot head. But she wouldn't quit. She had started to step in whenever she saw others in trouble again, not wanting anyone she was close to die.
  
  Eventually, she managed to be relentless enough in her pursuit of vigilantism that Batman allowed her to (also briefly) take on the alias of Batgirl, working more closely with him and the rest of the Batfam before going back to original alter ego as Spoiler. Now, she tries to lead a double life of college student and nighttime vigilante, trying to take on as many things as she can, possibly to her own eventual detriment.
