There's no available cover, but you evade the shot. The archer draws again, a rictus grin of filthy teeth showing where his lips have peeled away.

Dodging is 3 dice, but that was a lucky roll.
 
I quickly rise and run at him again. This time as I run up the stairs I try to get close enough to make a stab at his feet with the shiv. [dice]23374[/dice][dice]23378[/dice] (Should I just always assume I need to roll 3d 12f?)

It's a close thing, but you manage to stab the mutant in the arm - a spatter of hot blood on your hand, the damp sound of tearing muscle. It staggers back, attempting to nock another arrow.

I pull back on the shiv to make a larger cut and use it as leverage as I push forward to knock him down with the shied.

You narrowly manage to slash the mutant's throat and slam it to the ground. Weak thing, it dies before it hits the floor and drops the weapon. At the same time, the dull reddish glow this one had fades, and you feel stronger.

Beyond is a door onto a rooftop - no, a room, the walls and ceiling long blown away leaving a flat balcony easy to fall from. The remnants of a doorframe lie in the left corner, but your vision is blocked by the looming walls of the Ward itself.


There is a corpse on your right, with a Thornaxe buried in their desiccated torso.


Hunter's Bow



A simple but well-crafted bow, made from the fibres of great cacti and scavenged plastic. Desert hunters wield them to deadly effect, but clumsier mutants will find it hard to use.


Trasharrows



Hastily cobbled arrows, made from bone, plastic, wood, broken metal, and anything else that could be formed into a crude spike. Typically shatter on impact and do little damage.


 
I take the Thornaxe and decide to jump off the balcony, to leave the hellish place.
 
Looking over the edge, that fall will definitely kill you. The Ward sits atop a rocky promontory and only the hard earth below awaits.

Thornaxe



A weapon commonly employed by hunters of the sand wastes; a thick length of cactus fibre, reinforced with bone and edged with sharp spines from poisonous cacti. The poison is long dried, but the tough teeth of this weapon can punch though lighter armour.

You move quickly enough to avoid further hits, but you see a mutant armed with a plastic shiv stumbling towards you; the archer is behind her, between you and two other doorways. No, not doorways - the one on the left of the archer seems like an old mount for a machine of some kind, open to the courtyard. The door behind it is in a more intact portion of the Ward; a guard tower.
 
(How close are both enemies? Also sorry for the delay. I was camping and probably should've mentioned that before disappearing for the better part of a week.)
 
Too close for the bow; close enough for you to step forward and swing your Thornaxe or for them to close the gap and strike.
 
I take out the axe and shield to make a swift swing at the mutant carrying the shiv.

The axe splits their skull at the jawbone, scattering teeth like fleeing mice across the floor. Their glow fades as they slump dead against the wall.

The archer doesn't appear to be moving from their spot.
 
I sprint towards him with the shield raised, hoping to fend off any arrows with it. Once there I pummel him with it before delivering a quick downward stick where his shoulder meets his neck.

He barely has a chance to nock an arrow before you cut him down, the arterial spray painting the drab concrete.

Advance towards the guard tower. Maybe there's some gear or supplies, or at the very least, we can find our bearings as to where the hell we are.
 
An empty room; exposed concrete worn by years, a sealed door in the back. Another shiv-wielding mutant stands before it, tears silently and ceaselessly pouring down her face. She sees you, but only clutches her weapon tighter.
 
Ready the bow, and be cautious of her. Search the tower for supplies while never looking away from the mutant.
 
I dunno, considering it's empty, I'd examine the door rather than the room, how it's sealed, and if there's a way to open it. That said, keeping an eye on the mutant while the bow ready to draw, that's a good idea.
 
My bad, I didn't see that he said the room was empty. Yeah examine the door instead.
 
The mutant raises their weapon and hisses; there's no mind left in that spotted, misshapen skull.


The door is electronically sealed; a keycard would be necessary to open it, and probably not the one you have.
 
No mind in that skull, and soon to be, no brains. If we're lucky, it's got the card on it, but I doubt something like that'll just fall into our lap.
