TLDR: Squink hears Cluilia's offer, notices and talks to Jareth, asks why he got a stone shoe on

Squink silently drowned in her own thoughts, she had heard the words of Cluilia advertising her own shop within the Capital although the ilithid held no intention of going to the Capital on a whim. Perhaps it would be an idea of a place to go, though asking to go along with the merchant may have been too late with how much time she was going to spend wallowing and moping.. Sighing softly to herself as she felt on the verge of tears over her feelings of self-consciousness, helplessness and uselessness, she was broken from thought by the sound of someone talking to get her attention. Looking forward for her gaze to meet a pair of legs, one of which was strangely wearing stone, her eyew looked up the body to meet the familiar face that was talking back to her. She didn't expect to see Jareth so suddenly considering it felt like he had reason to celebrate and relax.

"O-oh, hi. I would've thought you may have been eating or drinking with the others, or maybe spending the chance of respite with Michael seeing as you two seem close friends" Squink answered softly as the conversation was briefly distracting her from her own feelings, though hints of her being upset were probably visible on her cephalopod face. Her eyes probably, at the least. She was about to offer him to sit, her glance to her side and reaching her hand as if to pat the spot in invitation, but felt conscious over if he was just passing or probably didn't want to sit on the floor too. She just faced back to him awkwardly as her gaze slowly drifted down him back to his petrified foot.

"It's fine I guess, although I don't think I really ever did anything to help so maybe it's just not really for me. A-are you enjoying it or is something wrong?.. " she asked, trying to direct away from her own feelings as she was visibly staring at the stone on him now.

"U-um, Jareth, maybe I've just never looked, but why do you have a single stone shoe? Is that not uncomfortable?... ".

The guards seemed less interested in talking to Kyra than arguing amongst themselves about which one of them she had addressed. Maybe this is their first time interacting with women... Ever? Though this is less interacting and more oogling. Along with that, Kyra was starting to think that she had made a mistake in trying to aid in their negotiations; but she was spared the worst of the leering as some of the more competent members of their group finally convinced the captain to let them through.

Their subsequent passage for the next week was, thankfully, uneventful; no further attacks, just the caravan trudging along through the empire's hills. And then- they came across a valley, and Kyra was awestruck. The lake, the hills, the temple- it was breathtaking, and it seemed just about everyone felt the same way. They celebrated, and spirits of old joined them; and above them, in the sky, was the phoenix- magnificent to see yet again. Though she knew that the majestic creature couldn't see her from the distance, Kyra couldn't help but to offer it a wave as it passed them by.

Retili and Cluilia took their leave, and despite the size of the caravan, Kyra was surprised to find that she could feel their absence. It spoke to what commanding figures they were, she told herself- and turned her attention back to the festivities at hand. Squink and Jareth had sequestered themselves off to the side to talk, but Kyra spied Michael leaning against a wall by himself. With a drink in hand and no one else to converse with, the adventurer meandered over towards him. "Hey," she greeted, with a smile, and took note of his pensive look. "Penny for your thoughts?"

sample-6fd9cd421f932b4d1384d5098cfb5818.jpg Stowed away in the back of the caravan, as far from prying eyes as she could muster. Kristina sat, her knife held in her hands. She scrutinized the blade, and pommel checking for wear and tear. Her knife was the most reliable and highest quality weapon Kristina owned. It also served as one of the few reminders of her old life. If asked Kristina would deny being so sentimental, either way she would not part with it so easily. And allowing it to fall into disrepair was out for the question.

Just as she finished sharpening the edge of her knife the caravan jerked to a halt. Raising her gaze from her work her ears could pick up the excited voices of the caravan members. After weeks of travel they had finally arrived at their destination. Stepping out into the valley cloaked in the setting sun Kristina saw the members of the Order of the Sun talking and preparing to unpack. Their fatigue from the journey seemed all but forgotten, or rather it was covered by an aura of peace. Perhaps it was some magic of the valley itself, or simply a feeling of accomplishment after traveling a hard road.

After the high priestess appeared and gave her rousing speech it wasn't long before the festivities started. With it came things Kristina had only seen as a danger. But the translucent beings that could only be called ghosts or spirits were far less threatening than the ones she had seen before. They danced with such joy that it even struck Kristina. When the adventurers had finished receiving their own blessings Kristina approached the High Priestess last. Unlike the revelers Kristina had a controlled expression; keeping the full extent of her feelings to herself. Her pride didn't allow otherwise.

"The Order made it in one piece. Looks like my job is done. You can pay me after the festivities are over. Of course I wouldn't mind if your Order became a customer of mine in the future."

After she had concluded her business Kristina retreated to a secluded area. The fact that it was just next to Michael was a coincidence, but not one she cared to do anything about. She nodded to him as she walked past allowing him to enjoy his drink. There was a healthy distance between them, and while just looking at him reminded her of Thorne she didn't have any burning questions he could answer. As one of the female adventurers approached him she merely kept her distance. Then in a practiced motion she pulled a cigarette from the recesses of her cloak, lit it, and performed a relaxing inhale. This job hadn't necessarily been hard, but it was one of her longer ones, and the adventurers were a rowdy bunch. Far too green, and numerous for her tastes.

As a phoenix soured into the air on fiery wings evoking the image of the rising sun. Kristina allowed herself to relax, and watched the ongoing celebration till the end. Hoping that this one of many jobs were taking her in the right direction. Though she didn't quite know what that looked like

Sandman - character's body is made of sand. Is likely to leave sand behind wherever they go. Has an easier time staying together in moist environments and less windy days. Even when solid, can give off the impression they may blow away at any moment.
Comrade - character has proved themselves to be a good ally and approachable. Character will have easier time convincing others to team up with their cause or to allow him to join theirs. More likely to join a cause that isn't worth joining too, however.
Sun-Kissed - character has a new found fascination with the Leilosis faith. Will suffer in social situations with those that despise the followers of the Sun God. Will excel in social situations with Sun God followers.

TL/DR - Jareth continues his chat with Squink.

"Yes...eating and drinking. Things a normal human like myself would totally do." Jareth said rubbing the back of his head. "I, uh...I'll grab something later perhaps. As for Michael, well...this whole spectacle is for him as well, you know. I'd hate to get in the way of things. He'll be surrounded by everyone congratulating him and thanking him and...I prefer being around people that don't suffocate me...like you for instance." A huge sigh escaped Jareth as he plopped on the ground, an audible thud sounding from the impact. He reclined against the remnants of a pillar or some such. When Squink dismissed her own contributions, he lazily waved a hand to dismiss her dismissal. "Don't be so hard on yourself. You think I was always like this? Should have seen me back in Ryken. I wasn't much use to anyone but my master back then. Heck, I only got like I am now because I met Michael. Who knows what you'll become now that you've met him?" Jareth's eyes drifted off to the side to stare blankly at the ground. Even after Squink brought up his petrified foot, his gaze lingered a moment longer before slowly shifting to also stare at his foot. "No, that's definitely new. It's not the first time it happened, but this is definitely the most pronounced manifestation." Jareth chuckled lightly. "Maybe I'm coming down with something." said he as he rested his head against the stone behind him.

New Sun Temple

1697333122646-png.1119478

1697683657115.pngIn the radiant glow of the setting sun, the ruins of the Sun temple shimmered in ancient splendor, telling tales of a bygone era that was punctuated by passionate prayers and celestial chants.

"Ah, isn't it a beautiful evening!" a sun worshipper exclaimed to Jareth, spinning around in the sun's golden embrace. As if on cue, another sun worshipper approached Jareth and Squink, offering a radiant smile, "Indeed. The sun's blessings are upon us tonight."

Elsewhere, adventurers turned the main hall into a raucous tavern of sorts. Laughter and songs filled the air, echoing against the temple’s age-old walls. One could hear the cacophony of voices, "To riches!" "To dangerous exploits!" "And to more riches!" It seemed that for every step one took, there was a new story to be heard, a new jest to be shared.

The spirits of former priests floated silently amongst the revelers, watching with a mix of fascination and a hint of nostalgia. One, in particular, tried to impart some wisdom to an intoxicated adventurer, only to be completely ignored. The spirit sighed, "Youth, these days," and continued on his ghostly patrol.

Amidst the wonder and merriment, Michael found himself deep in thought, leaning against a column that still bore the markings of the sun god. He glanced at the caravaners, grateful for their presence, and remembered the bandit attack. The ease with which he had dispatched the attackers bothered him. The numbers he had killed... and the numbers more he would've killed, had the phoenix not made its timely appearance. Was he becoming too trigger-happy with his powers?

Kyra's approach made Michael more present.

He sighed, "It's just... before, without this power, I would've had to think of another way. But now, I find force becoming my first choice." He looked at the checkpoint in the distance. It was too far to actually see, but knowing where it was and suspecting he could potentially attack it from where he stood made him visibly cringe at the thought. "Did you see the anxiety in the eyes of those guards? Word is there's a war taking place at the southern border. Fae against humans. And apparently, a bug infestation – quite a large variety at that."

He paused a moment to think before he mused, "If I were to go there, fighting those bugs... maybe it’d help me find balance. A situation where unleashing my power is justified."

Michael nodded to himself, the weight of responsibility evident in his eyes. He looked out at the worshippers, adventurers, and caravaners, all finding joy in their own way. "Perhaps," he whispered, "there's a place for me too if I can't find my way home."

TLDR: Squink talks to Jareth more, thinks about talking about some personal stuff, asks sun worshippers to excuse them so maybehaps her and jareth can go leave to somewhere secluded and talk privately away from peoples??

Squink silently fumbled with her empty hands as Jareth spoke, unsure why he was acting the way he was but just supposing his little moment of awkwardness left him not feeling human. He was at least a billion times more normal and human than she was or ever could be. When he had mentioned how being around her instead of others wouldn't drown him, Squink took it as a compliment as her tentacles scrunched up and recoiled into her face as she nervously eyed the floor and poked at it.
"T-thanks, it's nice to speak one's own mind to someone you like or trust, so I'm glad you came over, although I don't really know what to say" Squink mumbled as Jareth went on to speak about how far he had come since meeting Michael. Squink was a little unsure about the correlation between meeting him and success, but just went along with it for the some part. Upon hearing him talk about his stone foot, Squink hadn't heard of any sort of illness that petrified people but maybe it was just some rare foreign thing that she wasn't acquainted with. There was a lot weirder to exist after all.

"Oh, w-well I hope you get better from it soon, but maybe you should get that checked by some sort of... doctor, or a mage, professional somewhat. Maybe a stonemason or something... " she fumbled around with her thoughts and words as she hesitated on the idea of talking to him about her past which she held her tongue on the topic when they had originally met before the trip. Inbetween her considerations, Squink heard and turned her attention to two sun worshippers who had allowed themselves into their conversation on a whim, supposing that this was the sort of social drowning Jareth must have been speaking about.
"S-say, can I talk to you about... a-about..." she mumbled softly under her breath before knowing that she wouldn't be able to just ignore the sun worshippers.

"Ahah, y-yes, this is a very nice evening. Uh.. " Squink answered as she was a little distracted to focus at the current moment, thinking that it might be a little simpler if they stepped away for a brief moment just so they weren't too interrupted.
"E-excuse me, thank you for being nice enough to come talk, but I- w-we?... would like to excuse ourselves for maybehaps just a teeny moment to have a moment in private and I don't mean to be rude about it... " Squink answered as nicely as she could try as she gently and slowly stood up, looking to Jareth as if to take her invitation so they could momentarily step somewhere a little more secluded and away from the events so they wouldn't be intruded on. He didn't seem like he wanted to be around others much at the time too, so maybe he would be receptive of the offer. She herself wasn't entirely too fond of it with how she was feeling.

"Oh," was the first thing that Kyra said, mostly because she was caught off guard by Michael's response. She had expected something along the lines of 'it's been a tiring journey' or that he was happy to see the caravan safely escorted to their destination or he was thinking about what was next in store for him- well, in a way, that last one was accurate- but she certainly hadn't been expecting an honest view of his worries.

For a moment, the idea that someone as powerful as Michael could even have such human anxieties seemed almost laughable; but as Kyra gathered her thoughts, she realized that it was plain to see. His skin might have been flawless and unmarred as a teenager's, but his eyes were heavy, and deep in the way one only saw in a geriatric home. She followed his gaze, from the ground, to where they had come from, and back to the space in front of him, and couldn't help but wonder if this wasn't the first time he'd had these sort of thoughts.

"Honestly? The guards looked more... Hm, they looked like how I felt whenever I've forgotten I had an assignment, and remembered about it the morning it was due," she offered, and took a long sip from her drink. She'd need the liquid courage the cup could give before offering her perspective further. "Maybe you just need to practice your other skills more, so you can lean on them more instinctively. If you think you're relying on your strength too much, I dunno, join a debate club to expand your tool belt, right?" She reached up and pushed her own hair back, only to rediscover her hairband and push it back to the side it had started on.

Was she being too familiar? Maybe. She took another sip and pressed on. "But, for what it's worth, in my experience, um, how do I put this... Like, I used to know people who were worried that they'd be bad parents when they had kids, right? But that ended up just being a symptom that they cared enough to not be. I think it might be the same thing, here. If you're worried about overdoing it, then you're probably going to be conscious about not doing that, um, if that helps any."

She thought she heard him murmur something else- but if he had, she couldn't make it out over the din of revelers. Everyone was entitled to their own private musings, anyways- and Kyra was having one of her own right now. If she kept getting lucky, and eventually amounted to being any good at adventuring, let alone great... Could she, one day, be worried about her own strength, too? It was a sobering thought, and she pressed it down with another drink. She'd hardly be a good shoulder to lean on if she was worrying about herself.

TL/DR - Upon being interrupted by a couple sun worshippers, Jareth walks with Squink around the lake's edge, letting her know that he would listen whether she spoke or remained silent.

Jareth chuckled as Squink took his statement about becoming sick seriously. "It's a joke, Squink. Though you might be right that I should at least see if someone can explain what's happening to me." The revelers, though well-meaning, were interrupting a quiet moment shared between friends. A sound like a mix between a sigh and a rattlesnake's warning escaped him as he stood, answering Squink's invitation. "Don't let us ruin your evening, friends. We just prefer to celebrate quietly. Perhaps we'll share drinks later." Jareth waved to the sun worshippers as he walked off with Squink. "You don't know what to say, hm? Say anything. Or say nothing. It's not like I demand one or the other from you. I'll listen equally to your silence just as much as your speech. It's just us and the evening air after all."

Jareth's petrified foot caused a halt in his gait, though he didn't seem to mind. It wasn't painful, but the condition did alter his movement some. To observe him, one would find his attentions were moreso taken by the lake reflecting the molten sun next to them. His uneasiness about whatever force was drawing him to the water mounted until he was possessed to reach down, pick up a stone, and lob it into the drink. He seemed to relax some as the ripples disturbed the placid surface of his tormenter.

Squink left the public area with Jareth to the peace of the lake not any troublesome distance away to get back just in case it was questioned where either of them was. Fidgeting as she stared out at the lake's distance, broken from her nervous distractions from the stone that Jareth threw in the lake. An odd sight to just throw in a stone rather than skipping them as a pastime, but she chose not to question his choices too much as they were his own.

"U-uh, well... " she mumbled softly as she felt an uneasy sensation in her stomach over the thought of the subject. It felt difficult to just bring it out or say it even if she trusted him completely.
"You asked a long time ago b-before about where I was from or something... " Squink said, not getting the exact details of the question right but being too lost in the mind and it having been a long while ago to recall specifics.
"Well, the truth about that is I don't really know. I-I just kind of, ended up in Ryke one day and don't really know why. I don't even recall much about family or many things I remember, if I even had those things... In the ruins of the Sun temple, the very stones seemed to pulse with the weight of history, and even the most rambunctious adventurers sensed the reverence of the place. The sun worshippers, cloaked in the burnished golds and oranges of their sect, flowed like a river of light around the old stones, greeting anyone and everyone with radiant smiles.

"May the Sun's embrace always warm your path!" one devotee, with a sunflower pinned to his robe, declared to no one in particular. A caravaner passing by, more interested in the bottle in his hand than spiritual enlightenment, gave a nod, "And may my bottle never run dry!"

Caravaners, those hardy souls who make the perilous journeys between the cities and kingdoms, swapped tales of roads less travelled, many imbibing in drinks that bubbled and fizzed in suspicious manners.

Yet, amidst the merriment, the soft ripples of private celebrations could be heard. Those looking for a bit more seclusion still made their presence known, through laughter or song or just the tinkle of a bell. Jareth and Squink would be alone but likely not beyond the reach of others who had also separated from the pack.

Michael, his thoughts reflecting the hues of a setting sun despite the deepening night and where his thoughts had been, turned his attention to Kyra. She was a surprising woman, one who looked at the world with a depth that belied her years, or so Michael felt.

"Thank you for your words, Kyra," he began, sincerity lining his words. "When you've adventured as much as I have, it's hard to remember that not every situation calls for a the most final of solutions. I'm not even all that senior as an Adventurer. I've only been doing it for 2 years, but it feels like some things changed along the way." He tried a smile, which felt a little unfamiliar on his face, like a hat worn for the first time.

Clearing his throat slightly, he ventured, "Now that we've successfully ensured the caravan's safety, what do you plan next?" He paused, contemplating, "Perhaps we should make our way to the East Empire Adventurer's branch, to report and, well, claim our rewards. Though I've a feeling that the real rewards aren't always the ones counted in coin." While it may have came off as an attempt to be philosophical, Michael was considering the promotion owed to him and what it could entail.

Somewhere in the distance, a lute started playing, a lilting tune that echoed the highs and lows of the journey. Around them, the party continued, a reminder that even in the darkest shadows, the light of camaraderie and shared purpose burned bright.

Despite her lack of experience to draw on, it seemed that Kyra's words had helped Michael feel better. She smiled back at him. "We all need to talk things out with other people, right? I'm glad I could lend an ear." Talking helped to keep the surprise off of her face: the azure man seemed so experienced, so powerful, so worn out, that she was sure that he'd have multiple years under his belt. More than two, at any rate. Though she thought back to their encounter with the bandits, and how certain she was of the dire consequences she would have faced if the phoenix hadn't rescued them. Two years of surviving encounters like that was sure to weed out all but the cream of the crop.

She leaned a shoulder against the wall, and looked out towards the crowd. Merriment and color both flowed from the crowd, and she felt her heart warm; it was good to see them all so happy. "No, I think the real reward is seeing this," she said, softly, then turned back to Michael and flashed him a grin. "Though I won't complain about money, either. Can't replace my armor with happiness, unfortunately. As for after that... Mm, I'm not quite sure. Maybe see if I could find a school or something, or somewhere to train my skills. And just exploring, I think. I'd love to see more of the East Empire- well, and everywhere, really. This is my first time leaving Ryke."

With all the commotion that had happened at the border, actually, she hadn't considered that she was in unfamiliar territory- the furthest she'd ever been from the Shire, in a way. It was a little odd for this realization to just be setting in, but the thought of the Earth story made it more comforting, somehow. And hey- she had wanted to see the world. She'd seen more of it, now, and the idea of seeing the rest of it suddenly became that much less intimidating; in fact, she felt rather hopeful about the future.

TL/DR - Episode V: The Sandman Chats Back

Jareth stopped walking as Squink began opening up about the blank slate that is her past. He looked at her as she avoided his gaze.

"That must be tough for you, Squink." Jareth said. He contemplated his own past. Even though his parents were taken from him at a young age, the fact that he had parents to remember at all is a blessing. Squink had no familial ties to reminisce on. Then he thought of Michael. The guy spent all his time roaming around doing missions for the Adventurer's Guild with no concern for a family or place to call home. Jareth didn't know if Michael was happy, but he definitely didn't have anything tying him down. "You're free in a sense. Home becomes wherever you are rather than being locked in as the location where your family or friends are. You could easily become a citizen of the East Empire since you're here. Or you could return to Ryke and settle down there. Or you could travel around to the other nations and see what they have to offer. I definitely wouldn't encourage you to make the trip alone, but you have that option in your current situation. And who knows? Maybe somewhere out there is a clue to your past. It's all up to you." Jareth turned to look at the main festivities happening on the opposite side of the lake from them near the temple. "You should join a guild. Michael and I are part of the Adventurer's Guild. There's plenty of opportunity to travel, and the work is more than just escort jobs like this one. You can find something that you feel you can handle. And when you feel like taking on more, the guild can put you in touch with more experienced individuals who can show you the ropes. Whatever you decide...just don't put yourself in a box. If I can become more than what I was, I know you can."

And so, the ruins of the old Sun temple, now alive with laughter and the warmth of celebration, continued to bear witness to the quirks of life and the strange tapestry that is human connection.

In the heart of it all, the sun worshippers danced with a fervor born of devotion, their movements a mesmerizing whirl of color and life. They twirled and swayed, as if trying to become one with the celestial body they adored, their spirits as ablaze as the setting sun.

The adventurers, a ragtag collection of dreamers and daredevils, found camaraderie in the shared tales of perils faced and treasures found. They clinked their glasses, toasting to victories won and to those yet to come, their laughter ringing out like a sweet melody.

And the caravaners, the wandering souls of the road, found solace in the temporary respite. They exchanged stories and goods, their trading as much a dance as that of the sun worshippers, a ballet of barter and camaraderie.

In the midst of it all stood Michael, a man with the weight of countless journeys in his eyes, yet a newfound lightness in his heart. He had opened up, if only just a bit, and in doing so found a kind of solace he hadn't known he needed.

"Life's strange, isn't it?" he mused aloud, his voice barely a whisper amidst the cacophony of celebration. "You roam around, thinking you've got it all figured out, and then... you meet people. People who change the way you see the world."

He looked around, taking in the sight of his comrades Kyra next to him, Jareth further out, and the others scattered around. It was a motley crew, brought together by chance, yet bound by something coming from facing and overcoming the odds together.

"Maybe that's the real treasure of adventures," he continued, more to himself than anyone else. "Not the gold or the glory, but the connections you make, the lives you touch... and the lives that touch yours."

And as the sun dipped below the horizon, bathing the ruins in a golden glow, Michael felt a sense of completeness. He was still a wanderer, a man of the road, but for the first time in a long time, he didn’t feel quite so alone since he came to the new world. The sun worshippers phrased it as "Dawn is countless rays united, casting warmth upon the world as one."

The highs. The lows. The funnies. and Ultimately we helped the sun bros make it to the east empire safely. Good job everyone. Teamwork and using actual words to plan may have benefited the party though.

Aftermath:
The starting island in ryke is now a ghost town. All the sun worshippers have left. The East Empire now has a new religion dedicated to the sun god leilosis in the north west region. The ruins they settled in and surrounding area will continue to be settled and a new village will be established in time with support.
