Ezekiel nodded as another spoke as well. “We know our routes well. Perhaps we do not patrol but walk the routes to determine those checkpoints like he said.” Ezekiel liked this suggestion as well. “We have a good portion of our day left, and I do not want us to find ourselves more trouble so soon after. But I think that is a good plan. If we travel our quick routes, we can get to the mainland swiftly. As an entire team we can determine the best places along the path to meet up.”

“Guys, can we not?” Theo tried because he didn’t want to have to deal with anyone getting in trouble or the repercussions later when he had to sleep in the same room as Brian. Brian, however, did not like that. “Back up, you little coward. I don’t know how you have even made it this long.” He turned back to Kai and did not move. “What are you going to do, daddy’s boy? How are you going to make me move?” Break your nose, Theo thought to himself but did not say that out loud. What if Kai did? How would they ever get away with this then?

Alex nodded, that was a smart move. He agreed completely as did Drake and a few others. “That sounds like a good idea, so we have a good idea of where to go if we need to when we actually are patrolling.” Alex said as he got ready to move with his group.

Kaiden heard Theo, but his focus was on Brian. He was angry now, furious in fact. “Leave him out of this. As for you.” Kai said, uncrossing his arms and put them on Brian’s shoulders and pushed hard. “Move out of my way or you won’t be able to see out of those eyes of yours.” Kai threatened, as he glared at Brian, hoping his push did something.

In his last group, Ezekiel felt that they had good teamwork, but they did not have great conversations. They did not decide things together or ask felt about what they were doing. That was why they all died. Ezekiel was sure of it. They did what they were told by one man who thought he knew best. If they had the kind of relationship that allowed someone to voice their concerns, it might not have happened. “Then let’s go.” Ezekiel pushed them forward to begin the journey.

Brian was clearly upset as he stumbled back, catching himself before he fell. He fumed as he straightened. He took a whole step forward before Theo shoved himself between them, facing Brian, and said, “That’s enough! We are just taking a walk Brian. I am sorry that you had to be awake for so long looking for us. I appreciate that you took the time out of your highly regimented sleeping schedule to do that, and now we’re going to leave you alone to catch up on that much needed rest. Because you’re tired. And we’re tired.” He looked back at Kai. As much as he would have loved to watch Kai knock Brian down a peg, now was the worst time. Brian tried to walk around him but when he clearly was not going to be able to, he shoved a hand over Theo’s shoulder to point at Kaiden. “This isn’t over. You’re lucky he’s right. I do need to rest, which is your fault. You think you can get away with whatever you want because your dads are so important. Not all of us think that your father is the hero everyone seems to think he is. It’s no wonder you are the way you are.” Brian pushed off of Theo and stomped away from them. Theo let out a breath.

Alex made his way with the rest of his group to the mainland. He was excited once more and he felt like they had a good group that talked to each other.

Kai watched as Brian stumbled and he was more than happy to engage him when Theo jumped in between them. He listened but never stopped glaring at Brian. When he saw the hand shoved over Theo’s shoulder and his eyes flashed at the words. Oh if he didn’t have something else to be doing he’d have punched him. “You’re right, this isn’t over.” He snapped as he watched Brian walk away. “I can’t stand him. He’s such a jerk.” Kaiden huffed as he shook his head. “Thanks for stopping that. Let’s get moving. The staircase should be up ahead and to the left. It’s labeled emergency but the alarm has been broken for years.”

The journey was relatively quick to the mainland. With the light and the practice, they could get anywhere swiftly. Ezekiel had always been proud of that. He was always proud of how resourceful and capable he and the Seraphites were. They were so much more capable than those wolves. Wolves like Kaiden and Theo. He almost laughed under his breath.

Theo watched Brian leave just to make sure that he did not turn around and try and punch Kai or something. “I mean, well, yeah, he kind of is the worst, but it’s just when he’s in horrible moods. I guess he has a right to be angry. But it’s soooo often. Man, I hate when he’s like that.” Theo shoved his arms over his chest and hunched a little as they walked. He no longer had to pretend that he was feeling less than ideal. He really wasn’t. Every time Brian was around now it was like this. It would be him to almost ruin all of their plans. They moved down the hall and there it was. The staircase. He looked around. No one was there.

Alex was happy to be at the mainland again, even with the horrible memories it held of demons the last time they were there. He kept up with the group as they drew closer to the start of their patrol route.

“I wish you could switch roommates. I’ll trade Owen for you.” Kaiden said as he looked around. He pushed on the door and opened it up. As he stepped through, he heard the blare of the alarm. “We gotta run! Quickly!” Kaiden said, adrenaline spiking as he raced through the door. “All the way to the bottom and push open the bottom door. Follow me. Quickly.” He said, not seeing anyone yet but knowing they’d be coming soon. The thrill of getting caught ran through his veins as he raced down the steps.

Ezekiel slowed them as they arrived at the beginning of the route. “Okay, normally, we would split into pairs from here, but we have a central path. Imagine it like the line that keeps us bound together. From here, where is the place that you naturally want to go. There are no wrong answers, and there can be differences in opinions. We are going to find somewhere that matches with the majority perception.”

Theo shrugged and answered, “That’s pretty sweet of you,” just as they pushed open the door. The alarmed screeched in his ear, and he instinctively shrank down. He ran as Kai did, following with legs moving as fast as his heart beat. “I thought you said that was broken!” He rammed himself at the door at the bottom and threw it open for them. This was not at all how he thought this was going to go. They were going to have to find somewhere to go quickly before someone realized who just got out without permission.

Alex looked around as they paused at the start of their route. “Those buildings up to the left would be a good place to go. Easy to hide in and could have supplies as well if one was running low.” Alex commented while Drake pointed further up to a half caved in parking garage. “That could work as well. For similar reasons.” He said.

Kai could hear the ringing of the alarm as the door shut behind them and he followed Theo out. “That’s what Manny told me last time!” He said as he looked around. They had a few minutes before people would be checking the alarms. “This way!” Kaiden said, running to the left and then jumping to the right, onto a small trail between two bushes. “Straight ahead should be the main fence for the stadium. We get over that and then it’s a straight shot to the gate.”

Ezekiel and members of the group looked at the buildings and then the parking garage. “There are many buildings as the parking garage is large. Let’s take a look at the buildings first and then the garage to see if there are pros or cons for each. And there will be. Do not be afraid to speak your mind.” He moved them towards the buildings.

“Manny seems to be confused,” Theo muttered as they ran. And ran. And ran. This was not what he thought they would be doing in this secret mission, but honestly, why would they not be doing this? This was exactly how they were. “Ooooh everything I do with you is so exciting that I swear I am going to explode one of these days. Seriously Kai, this is exactly why your dad is always worried.” But Theo was laughing. He was laughing so much as they ran to the main fence. “How did Manny tell you that we get out from here?”

Alex nodded as they turned to the buildings. Both the buildings and the parking garage were good ideas. Both could provide shelter and supplies should something happen. A building, while tight could be easier to defend, but a parking garage could give room to move if necessary.

Kai felt a flush of red on his face when he heard him. “Yeah. I know. But I can’t help it. I love exploring and checking things out. It’s not my fault he worries so much!” Kaiden said as he stopped at the fence, pulling up a loose piece of fencing from Manny’s constant escapades. “Quick get under here.” Kai said, so he could roll the fencing back down and they could get out of line of sight. He had a bad feeling he might get caught, but he hoped not.

Ezekiel slowed as they reached the buildings. “There are many places to hide within this area. We need to be able to communicate. If we go inside one of these, we have to make sure that the whistles are not obstructed by anything. Shall we test it?” Without further ado, Ezekiel entered one of those buildings. He was not worried about any infected. They took care of many of them just the day before and also this morning. There would always be more, but they should not be a problem for now.

“And that’s why I love you,” Theo assured him as he too stopped at the fence. He knelt down low and made his way underneath the fencing and practically rolled out. “Look at me go, I’m great at sneaking.” He stayed down in case anyone was near. He didn’t see or hear anything, but that did not mean that no one was nearby.

Alex nodded along with several of their group. It would make the most sense to test now while they could before they needed it and couldn’t test it. “Should we disperse through it and figure out which places are better for whistling to each other?” Alex asked as they entered.

Kai chuckled as he rolled the fencing back down. He looked around and didn’t see anyone behind them. “Okay. So straight ahead is the gate, but we have some buildings, a warehouse and patrols to navigate through. We need to be quiet, quick and on alert.” Kaiden said as he started moving.

“That is exactly what I was thinking.” Ezekiel patted his shoulder. “And you think you need to work on being a good leader. Sure.” He disappeared into the building as did the others. It had multiple floors and he wanted people everywhere. They needed to be able to communicate effectively. After a few minutes, he whistled a question. Do you see anything? Are there any dangers?

Theo also started moving, and whispered, “Right. I am all of those. And thankfully we were the kind of trouble that the majority of people were up forever looking for us just this morning, so the patrols are going to be fewer and smaller than usual.” He pointed to the first building ahead. “That one you mean? Because getting around it would be extremely difficult I think.”

Alex blushed a little at the words. He felt that pride in his chest as he nodded. “Thanks.” He said quietly before he made his way up near the top of the building. A few moments later a whistle echoed through the floor. He waited and heard a response a floor above him of ‘all clear.’ Alex roamed a few more minutes before asking the same thing in his own whistle.

“See? Perfect time to sneak out then.” Kaiden said with a smile on his face as he kept low. He looked up and saw the building. “Hopefully we can get in one side and out the other without any issues or infected. Because we certainly can’t get around it.” Kaiden said as he surveyed the building they were coming up on. They had a few hours before dinner time. Hopefully that would be enough. Because if not, things were not going to be great if his dad knew he’d disobeyed and left the stadium. He might actually be chained to his side forever.

The first round of whistles was a success but that was only from a select few. The second round began, and Ezekiel waited a moment before answering with ‘all clear’ as well. The floor above was harder to hear in some parts, but there was enough damage that the sound could travel easier in some places. It did not seem like a terrible place to be, especially with everyone around. They could chain whistle and eventually it would get to the furthest person.

Was it perfect? No. Was it better than anything they could have hoped for? Yes, probably. He could only hope that within those hours between then and dinner that no one was going to go looking for them. Actually, that wouldn’t be so bad. He had to hope that no one decided to make a big deal of not being able to find them. That was going to be hell to get around if they did. “We also have no weapons or supplies, so let’s try not to get stuck somewhere that will require a miraculous hero to get us out of it? The likelihood of running into our saviors yet again seems incredibly unlikely.” He pointed to an open window on the second floor. “There. We’ll have to climb to get to it.”

The whistle was going well in the building, and it seemed like a good spot. Alex sent a ‘meet up’ whistle to see if they wanted to check out the parking garage next.

Kai could only hope his dad didn’t check on him. But if he did and didn’t find him, especially after some of the dreams he’d mentioned, Kaiden feared it wouldn’t end well at all. “Yeah, probably shouldn’t get stuck. Definitely don’t need to be saved this time.” Kai agreed as he looked around for something to climb on. He saw an old dumpster and pointed. “Let’s pull that over to use to climb up with.” Kai suggested.

Ezekiel and the others moved to the sound of Alex’s whistle. He was the center of their huddle as he was the one who summoned the rest. “That worked well. Would everyone else agree?” Several others nodded. “Do you think we should check the parking garage just in case it’s better. I doubt it will be, especially since so much is caved in, but it is worth a check if we would like to do so.”

Theo bounded over to the dumpster and began to roll it underneath the window. Thank goodness these things weren’t too hard to move around. “Alright, what do you think we’re going to see in there?” He asked as he climbed up onto the dumpster and waited for Kai to join him. “I am really hoping its like a magical pile of pillows to fall onto. Or or maybe.. uh, what about someone’s secret stash of old magazines. I don’t know something cool and not at all murdery.”

Alex wasn’t used to being the center of the huddle. It was odd and weird to him. Alex agreed as well that the building did well for what they needed. “It wouldn’t hurt to check out the parking garage. Just in case.” Alex put forward to the others.

Kai waited and climbed up onto the dumpster with Theo and looked at him shrugging his shoulders. “I don’t know. I’d rather an old couch than murder things like infected.” He said as he hauled himself over the window and looked inside. There was really nothing in and it wasn’t a big drop. He landed inside and looked around again. “Clear.” Kai whispered, waiting for Theo.

“Just in case,” Ezekiel agreed. “Move quickly. Keep your eyes out as we travel in case there are unwanted visitors.” He ushered them out of the building and through the streets of grass until they made it to the parking garage. “Let’s do the same thing. Spread out. I want us on as many floors as possible.”

This was so dangerous. This was so stupid. Of course, he loved doing stupid things. He loved doing anything with Kai really. He was his best friend after all. So he jumped himself through a window and landed as quietly as possible beside him. He peered around. It was mostly empty at least from here. Who knew what they were going to find as they went through.

Alex nodded as he followed the others out of the building. Across the streets of grass and across to the parking garage. He nodded and moved up about three floors and near the far side and it was clear so far. He let a whistle. Everything clear? Everything okay?

Kai didn’t see any infected yet but he did find a crowbar. Better than nothing. He led the way through, and into the hallway. Kaiden looked left and right before he looked back at Theo. “We need to find the stairs down.” He said quietly.

Because the parking garage was so big and made of such thick walls, hearing the whistles was much easier. It echoed and traveled far. The one whistled filled the air. It elongated. Ezekiel should have seen that coming, but it shocked him anyway. He whistled a returning ‘all clear’ which traveled the whole space as though it were clear everywhere. This was perhaps not their best place to hide.

Oh a crowbar. How smart. Theo should have brought a weapon. He knew that they were trying to be sneaky, but he should have brought at least a pocket knife that he could shove in a pocket. That was silly of him. Well, he guessed he was on the lookout for something useful in case they came across bad intentions. Theo nodded and moved quickly trying to find the stairs. No. No. No. oh! Stairs. He waved Kai over.

As Alex heard the single whistle reverberate everywhere, he realized this may not be a better suggestion. He whistled a meet up outside? And waited for a response from the others before he moved.

Kai was walking down the other side of the hall when he caught sight of Theo waving at him. He looked around and saw the stairs. As he headed down the stairs, he pushed open the door to find a small common area with the door right there, glass busted out. “Theo.” He said quietly, pointing to the door. He looked around and didn’t see anything yet. But if they patrolled here often enough, there might not be a lot of infected around.

In theory, they could spread out more in the parking garage. They could hide a little bit better because it was so large. They could use the destruction to move around quickly as they so often did. But if communication was going to be like this, it would not be useful if they had people around. So perhaps the buildings were better. Ezekiel responded with a repeated whistle to confirm meeting up again. As soon as everyone was out there he asked, “Alright. Opinions. I know I have some… concerns.”

Theo followed behind Kai down the stairs wondering if this would lead them somewhere magically convenient, and then there was the busted out glass. Well, that was either very nice or very scary. Or both. He frowned and peaked out around the corner of the stairs. He didn’t see anything. He stepped out, listening. He didn’t hear anything. He waved for Kai to follow him as he stepped through the broken door. Where are you infected friends? Because a nice dead body that the patrols left would really make this feel a lot safer right about now.

Alex made his way to the others after he heard the whistle to meet again. There were pros and cons to each spot, and depending on the situation one would be better than the other. “The buildings work better for communication since the whistles don’t reverberate like they do in the parking garage. Though the parking garage is big enough that we could move and hide but not communicate as well.” Alex said as he looked at Ezekiel.

Kai was a little concerned with the lack of infected, dead or alive. He followed Theo through the broken door and out into a large warehouse that they hadn’t seen from the outside of the building. Kai took about three steps forward then crouched. About two yards ahead of them were two runners, stumbling around and then the clicking sound echoed from their left. He motioned for Theo to get down and he leaned in. “How do we get around them? There’s no real places to hide and move here.” Kai whispered.

“Pros and cons for both.” Ezekiel agreed. Several others reiterated the same concerns. “I feel that we should meet at the buildings then. That way, we do not have to worry about any potential confusion with the sound distribution both for us finding one another and for enemies hearing.” He moved them back to the path. “Should we find another further down or do we want to keep it simple and always go back to the same place?”

There they were. All the infected he wished they could get around. Theo examined the space, but there wasn’t much to see. Everything was out in the open. “I’m the faster runner and you have the weapon so… what if I run and get them to run after me. Unless we can find something to throw? I’ll see if I can find something when I’m running. And then I’ll clear the way for you. The exit is… way over there it seems. Great. I can probably run somewhere crazy and make it. Your job will find a way to bar that door when I get through?”
