It's worth the time you spend reading to catch up. A pretty solid VN. Your characters can't be bullied there, so it's a safe zone.

I haven't had much of an issue with the roll directions during my revisits to DkS1, personally. As for the speed differences, I usually reacclimate myself by going light roll immediately and switching to mid-roll once I'm comfortable.

I've always preferred slower paced combat for Souls games. It's part of the reason why 3 is on a lower rung for me than most people.

Reverse playthroughing the series sounds fun. I might do it too if I can get myself to invest the time.
