I thought that only happened when command seals were in use. Illya never lit up like a Christmas tree when she passed rin or shirou

Shirou also had no idea there was a master nearby when he first met Ilya. That's why I'm pretty sure command seals do nothing to alert you to the presence of another master.

Bazett's command seals lit up when she and avenger when to the church to visit the overseer. It was because Rin and Sakura were there. I don't know. Ataraxia is really weird

I don't think Ataraxia should be taken as a source for the same reason Extra or FGO shouldn't be. It wasn't standard. It was weird and had it's own systems. I never saw command seals signalling the presence of a master in F/Z or FSN, which were both (in general terms) proper grail wars.

I don't even bother with themes anymore. I can never fin any that fit. On the rare occasion I do find something I'll use it, but that is very rare.

Ah, I never played or cared much about HA. Can't say I like that idea, I much prefer things like FSN or F/Z where two masters could pass right by one another without any clue they're masters.

That was only because a lot of the masters weren't even magus. Masters could tell other masters by the leak of magical energy being sent from master to servant. But with people like Shinji and Shirou that didn't happen.

I never saw that either. In fact the only time mana flowing into a servant is everused is when Kiritsugu did it. But that was just good old fashion technology, not magic. Everything shown in both FSN and F/Z tells us masters have no inbuilt way of detecting other masters.

It's more of a magus being able to tell other magus thing than master being able to sense masters. Magus generally can feel places where magic has been done, for example they could easily recognize a bounded field or another masters workshop. The problem in F/SN was that so many of the masters weren't magus or were using alternative methods.
