Fantasy Farewell to Kings: Elide’s Tale

Elide bit her tongue before sniffing. She stood and glanced back at the group. "I'll take first watch. I'm going to scout the area. You two can sleep." And without another word, she left the group

Bart grunted and Tess nodded. “Be careful. If you get spotted come and find us.” She said.

Once she was gone, Tess smacked Bart. “Will you snap out of it?” She barked.
“Ow, what?”
“It was one guy we met yesterday. What’s got you so broken up?”
“It’s not that!” Bart snapped. “It’s not about Job, it’s Elide. Did you see her last night when she came back?”
“N-.... I was...”
“It wasn’t fear or worry in her eyes. I saw deep into them. She was joyful, until she saw how broken up I was. That girl, covered in blood, excited and ready for more.”
“Bart... you’re all torn up inside, but you can’t take your feelings out on her.”
“N-no, I said”
“Just drop it. She loves you, and just wants you to be okay. That attack was crazy, and came from nowhere. I was awake too, and my keen ears didn’t catch it. You aren’t responsible for the entire world, you know...”

Elide was alone in the pitch black forest. Nearby was a looming predator. It was a panther resting on a tree branch. It’s body language said ‘leave me alone, I’m licking my chops for easier prey.’
There were trees and brush everywhere. So many possibilities for villains to lurk within.

She released the magic inside her, a feeling she had been waiting for all day. Elide allowed her aether form to take place. The beast had returned. She dipped down to her normal body and placed it carefully within a tree. Elide then bolted. She ran through the trees, feeling the wind against her face. She leaped from tree to tree, excitement pulsated throughout her body.

The air around the campfire grew moist. Neither of them heard or saw Elide transform.
Elide travelled around but didn’t see a thing for miles, until she spotted a couple men in the forest headed towards the mountain pass. Their life forces were visible to her.

She gripped the tree branches as she growled before running back to her body. She let herself transform once more before returning to the camp. She had gotten her sword and relit the fire. Elide sighed and glanced at Bart's tent, her heart aching. All she wanted was to love him. Had she gone too far? Had she moved too fast? Did he lose interest? Had Gerald been right? She sighed and reached out to them.
"You said I was only flesh to him? What did you mean?"

The sword was slow to respond.

“Do I have to spell it out? All men lose interest when you spill your guts out. He’s thinking wow she’s pretty crazy, maybe I should back out now.”

Gerald laughed at her derisively. What could she expect from a sword that hated her.

She sighed and disconnected herself from it. Elide frowned and braided her hair, trying to distract herself from her thoughts.

Her scouting complete, she determined the two life forms were in no way going to be a problem tonight.
The night dragged on, uneventful.

She waited until her watch ended to wake Bart. She slipped into his tent and gently prodded him with her hand

Bart awoke bleary eyed. “Uh, huh? Morning, princess. My turn for watch?” He reached up and kissed Elide on the cheek.
“Sorry about everything. I never asked how you felt after that terrible death last night...”

A feeling of relief washed over her as he kissed her. She embraced him tightly with a sigh "Am I too clingy? Or too much for you ?" She asked softly

Bart shook his head. “No, you aren’t. I just worry about stuff. I’m scared of that sword you’ve got. It’s looking different from before. I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“He would be a good sacrifice.”

"Well I named it Gerald...And all I know is that it won't leave me alone." She let out a solemn laugh, resting her hwad against his shoulder

Bart nodded like he understood. At least she was coping pretty well. He felt open like a bag of oats, laying in the road.

“Maybe tomorrow night we could share a tent?”

He kissed her longingly and left her with his warm bed
Bart donned his armor and helmet and took his dirty greatsword. “Two of them, headed into the mountains? I’ll keep watch that way. I’m definitely keeping sharp eyes tonight.”

Elide could sleep quickly if she slid into Bart’s bedroll. It was dark for a bit, while Bart fed the fire and poked it. No beer tonight. He was focused solely on the edges of the forest.

She had taken refuge in his bedroll. The scent of Bart still lingering within the roll. She sighed and let herself sleep.

Day broke and Elide woke up feeling rested. When she peered out of the tent she’d see Bart sitting on a rock looking out at the sunrise. Tess was still asleep. Did he never go to sleep?

She yawned and clammered out of the tdnt. Elide walked quickly 6ver to him. "Bart, darling, did you not go back to sleep?" She asked, a concerned look on her face.

Bart looked over and smirked. “Huh, no. I-I slept a little. I thought the sunrise looked nice.” His voice was less energetic. He was a little insomniatic.

"Well you should wake me next time so you're not all alone." She smiled, leaning down to kiss him

Bart hugged her and returned the kiss.
“We should make it into the mountains today. It won’t be really tough until we walk the horses across the ridge. After this we should be able to reach Dominion. Would you like that?”

The case of Elide’s father was still on his mind. If she chose, they could return to the Emerald Vale and take more guild quests, and enjoy life as a couple. But then, there was the pursuit of justice. As the City of Healing, Elide might find a crystal orb like the sword suggested.

She looked down at the ground before nodding. "I meed to make things right." She offered him a half smile before dipping back into her tent. There she changed into her armor and prepared to leave.

Bart got up and walked across camp to bug Tess into waking up.

“After this, Liddy and I are going to Dominion. Do you still have your balloon voucher?”

She tiredly nodded. She had the ticket somewhere in her bags.
“They don’t let just anybody into Dominion. I waited three months to get the ticket I have, and it doesn’t pay for your return trip.”

Eli packed up their items and fed the horses. She was the daughter of the high king, so that has to account for something money wise.
