Fantasy Farewell to Kings: Elide’s Tale

Outside people were yelling. In their uncommon tongue they yelled wolves. Some yelled “monster”. The entire camp was being rallied.

Immediately. A wolf ran past her, carrying a small green monster on its back. A goblin holding a spear was turning around to come at Elide with the spear.

Elide screamed and stabbed the small creature. Her eyes frantically scanned the battlefield

As she swung, the goblin’s reach let him attack first. His spear grazed her shoulder, the blade shoved itself into the goblin’s chest. The azure blade sung and shocked the goblin with its magical energy, killing the beast. Eli noticed that the crystal was touching the body. Perhaps thinner stabs with the steel would not trigger the sword’s ability.

She gasped placing a hand to her shoulder, blood pooling in the area. She swung at a few more, but it proved to be difficult with her shoulder.

“Elide!” Bart’s voice hollered from the other end of camp.
“Make sure the horses safe and get out of here! We’ll catch up!”
Meanwhile an angry wolf was staring at her. The dead goblin lied on its back before flopping sideways.
Meanwhile, her sword was flowing with magical powers. It fed on the goblin, and was only craving more.

The aether lashed out, casting the wolf aside. Elide rushed to the scarred horses. She grabbed them by the reins as she ran into the forest

She heard barking beside her, and little green men cackling. It seemed like they were related to the goblins from the cave. Or perhaps they just exist in great numbers. They snapped at the horses, which only served to scare them more.
“You have the power! Slay them all by your hand. It’s the only way you’ll survive without passing out. He needs you to be strong!”

She sighed and obeyed, sending the blade through the hearts of the goblins

The next strike swung true. The goblin was destroyed by magical light. Then came the next. Time seemed to move differently. Was she using aether magic to wield the blade? By the fourth swing she forgot what she was doing. Only a couple scared dogs remained, and fled into the woods whimpering.
Only blood stains and scraps of metal and cloth remained.
The battle raged on in the camp. Bart swung himself around and ripped goblins to shreds. Tess backed him up, shooting her composite bow.
The crystal blade was bright purple. It seemed happy with the state of things, a feeling it shared with Eli.
You wield me perfectly. I’m honestly surprised. I thought you’d be a coward forever.”

"Shut it Gerald. That's what I'm calling you now so get used to it" she smirked at the blade

When Eli returned, the battle was over and many goblins were slain. The caravaneers surrounded Job, who had been killed in his sleep by a goblin.
“Good, you’re alright. Are the horses ok too?” Bart asked.
“Looks like we lost a man tonight.” Tess mentioned, looking over to the wagons.
Bart punched a fallen tree trunk and growled.
It was my watch... my watch and he’s dead. I’m a failure.” Bart relented in his thoughts

She tied up the horses and walked over to Bart's side. She placed a hand on his shoulder. "Hey it's not your fault. None of us would've been ready" Elide said softly

Bart looked over to her. She saw flesh hanging off of his face, and burning grief in his teary eyes.
“It was my watch!” He cried out.

She sighed and called to her aura, she placed a hand to his face, healing the wounds he had gathered. When she pulled away, she winced a little. "You cannot blame yourself, you did the best you could." Elide wrapped her arms around him, trying to comfort him.

Bart took deep breaths and looked at the ground. Children were crying. A wife wept openly. Sadness filled the air until morning, when it was time to leave.

Bart wore a gray cloak and had his head down all morning. He followed Tess into the forest hills. Eli rode behind him on Aza, her grey mare.

She had pulled her veil over her face, silently couting each step. Elide pulled up her sleeve and tended to the stab on her shoulder. The spot was still bloodied from the attack before. She knew she couldn't heal her own faults, but she knew a few incantations to help with the pain.

Bart’s face had pink marks from the healing he received. He was tired and bitter. They’d spend the whole day on horses, only stopping once to rest.

The mountains were coming into view. It would soon be time to navigate the tough mountain pass.

Elide had fallen asleep she was leaning against Aza's mane, her magic guiding her.

Night fell, and they had to make camp again. It was turning into a pattern. Bart hadn’t said a word all day, not even Good Morning or I Love You.

“You hungry?” Tess asked the group. She had hunted a deer and made venison soup with water and some rice.

"Yes please," She smiled, sitting down. She took some food and ate hungrily, glancing at Bart. "D-Do you want any?"

Bart barely looked her way. He nodded with a grunt. Tess’ hand holding a bowl stopped and pulled it back.

“If you want food you have to talk, mister grouchy.” Tess was insistent. Bart let out a sigh.

“Yes, I’d too like some food” He said. That was all he had to say.

Tess gave them both soup, and they had a quiet meal by the fire.
