Exalted Essence: The Young Exalts and the Sea IC

Right after Ijara's initial whisper, the fiery bird that isn't Misja explodes within the midst of the Aigonites near Aigaion, reducing a number of them to flaming carcasses and blasting away. It leaves behind a roaring fire several meters in diameter, but with their ability to fly and the open space of the palace grounds, the surviving Aigonites will likely have little trouble avoiding it.

[The write-up for Flight of the Brilliant Raptor specifies the detonation as effecting everything within Short Range of the origin point, so presumably the resultant environmental hazard has a similar AOE.]
[The Rout Check for the Aigonites failed this time! They take a further 2 damage (Difficulty 3 - 1 success).]

‘I’ll really have to keep an eye out on that on.’ Tulak thinks as he witnessed the spectacular light show of destruction. There was a wall of fire between them and the enemy and its purpose was clear. The empires dog was giving them time to retreat. The flash of the killing light from assurances arm flashed. As he retreated he called out to her. “They are stalled! We must focus on getting people out!” He stepped out of the battle to assist the still fleeing civilians.

From her position within the palace ruins, Most Assurant hits her target, and follows up by unleashing an absolutely devastating volley of blasts from her pulse cannon, decimating the group of Aigonites that had already suffered under Garret and Sojiro.

[11 successes - Soak of 3 + 3 Damage = 11 successes. Rout Check succeeds, but the Aigonite Vanguard is still down to 1 Health Level.]

After Maya's assault on the Aigonites leaving them at the edge of annihilation, Sojiro gathered up the powers of his overflowing anima and the raging storm and bounded off to his next target. The shikari used everything from limbs, trees, and even rubble as his stepping stones, surging through his conjuring tempest with a thundering boom at his passing. Aramitama drank in the saturation of air's power and used it to conjure its own pillar of vibrant lightning. With the full might of the storm behind him three times over, Sojiro brings the daiklave down as he sailed toward his target, the eye of Aigaion.

[Rushing Aigaion for a decisive attack using 10 power. Activating Close Combat Excellency for Step 1 and Excellent Strike for Step 3, bringing Sojiro to Anima 8/Burning. Attack pool is 19 again with the hearthstone's rerolls in effect. 17 + 2 for accuracy again. 15 threshold damage bonus doubling over as per Excellent Strike... pool of 40 damage dice with 2 successes for damage from the weapon. 21 damage successes rolled for a total of 23. Minus 8 for soak that's 15 lethal.]

Garret wields his blade with practiced ease, hammering at the smaller monsters with Singlestroke and driving them back towards the flames and keeping their focus on him and away from the fleeing mortals.

Another Withering attack on the critters with a pathetic roll. Only 3 successes to hit.

Aigaion's great eye widens as Sojiro comes flying towards it, the fury of the storm at the Air Aspect's back. Then the Dragon-blooded's daiklave of blue jade comes swinging down, and amidst a flash of lightning, the eye and surrounding tissue is left marked by an immense scar, the behemoth actually roaring and recoiling in response to this process.

Back on the ground, Garret continues chopping away at the Aigonites with his heavy blade of Moonsilver, bringing another of them down.

[Withering attack succeeds with 0 bonus successes, but Singlestroke's Overwhelm of 2 generates 3 power for Garret. Rout check succeeds.]

The few surviving Aigonites around Garret suddenly break away from both the Lunar and the roaring fire created by Ijara, barrelling towards the palace ruins and Most Assurant. The Aigaionites around Aigaion meanwhile swarm the still airborne Sojiro, as if seeking to avenge his attack on Aigaion.

[Aigaion's attack will be resolved later. Aigonite Vanguard rushes Most Assurant, moving into Close Range with her. Other Aigonites attack Sojiro, remaining within Close Range of him. Rykon Rykon and Sherwood Sherwood , declare your defenses.]

Sojiro turns about with the momentum of his swing to see the swarm retaliate to avenge their wounded parent. "Ah, good. Phase two of the plan begins." With each passing podling, the shikari directs the winds to help him float around each swing of their limbs as harmlessly as a leaf wafting in a peaceful evening breeze, turning away from each incoming strike.

[Activating Flow like Blood for a 1m commitment for anima 9 to raise Defense by 1. I'd like to add any relevant stunt as well if you'll allow it. I'd also forgotten that anima flux is in full effect and has been since the top of the round. I'll add a note of this in his sheet somewhere, as I'm almost certain this will come up again. Before Stunt that's a Defense of 6, and Sojiro steals 1 Power if they fail to land a hit.]

When a Dragon-Blooded has 5 or more anima, all non-Dragon-Blooded within close range must make reflexive Fortitude + Physique rolls at the start of the Dragon-Blooded’s turn with a difficulty equal to the Exalt’s Essence + 2 or suffer one level of damage from raw elemental Essence. This only destroys scenery when it would be dramatically appropriate or at the player’s choice.

Most Assurant sees the onrushing monsters coming towards her and gives off a wry smile. Looking for the best place to try and bolster her defense, she looks for a place that will limit their ability to rush on her in solid numbers and force them to come forward only a few at a time.

Following the deep cut landed by Sojiro, Aigaion ascends further up into the sky, and actually breaks off its ponderous advance from the palace, putting further distance between itself and the Exalt who managed to harm it so grievously. Incredible as such a feat might be, you might have actually made it worried.

As Aigaion flies away, a volley of bright red Essence bolts flies out from the top of its head. These bolts are smaller than the ones used in the initial bombardment, but look to be much faster and more agile. Turning around in mid-air, they form up into three clusters and hurtle towards Garret, Sojiro and Most Assurant, homing in on them as if possessed by malevolent falcons.

Ranged Withering Attack incoming. Psychie Psychie , Rykon Rykon and Sherwood Sherwood , go ahead and declare your defenses. Sojiro gets to remove an additional two dice from the attack roll due to Mela's Breath, whilst being in the palace ruins will enable Most Assurant to benefit from heavy cover (+2 to Defense).

I've been treating it as a given that Aigaion is airborne, but I don't believe I've specified exactly how high off the ground it is. To make up for both this, and not taking into account Sojiro's Anima Flux before this moment, I'm going to have it so that Sojiro will only fall a short distance, i.e. not enough to cause him harm. In any event, I'm going to use Aigaion's reflexive Move action to establish it at Medium Range from the ground directly beneath it. Relative horizontal range bands won't change.

"Finally..." Sojiro sighed, still drifting downward amidst the assault of the second podling wave. His body almost fully immersed in gray smokey storm clouds crackling with hail and lightning. He steps from one flailing Aigaionite to the next, using their flailing forms to assist various aerial maneuvers to the ground. On the horizon he presents the image of a cloud-wrought serpent twisting and coiling amidst the numbers of its prey that dare think themselves its equal.

[Sojiro did rush this round and is ordinarily untargetable for ranged attacks, but I don't mind using a stunted defense given that our foe is having to eat a total of minus 6 for the effort already.]

Using her advanced targeting system, Most Assurant tracks the incoming fire from the behemoth carefully, calculating the most opportune angle and time to nudge the incoming Essence blasts off course from her to hit harmlessly (I hope) against the rubble around her.

Garret catches a glimpse of the incoming fire from the corner of his eye, and with a sudden burst of unexpected speed from his large form, he spins Singlestroke in a rapid arc, trusting in his Moonsilver blade to handle the force of the Essence blast and keep him from getting hurt.

With the stunt and Flow Like Blood, that should put my Defense to 7.

Attack roll incoming. Ordinarily Aigaion would have an attack pool of 12 here, but the penalties from wounds and Storm-Calling Strategies drop this down to 8. Sojiro will automatically avoid the attack.

Seven successes from roll, and Aigaion also has +1 Accuracy. This beats Most Assurant's Defense of 8 - the highest out of all the affected characters - with no bonus successes. Aigaion has an Overwhelming of 2 for its ranged attacks, but this only gets applied against Most Assurant. Thus, my understanding is that Aigaion gets 3 Power from hitting Most Assurant, plus an additional 1 Power from hitting Garret with 1 bonus success.

The bolts pursuing Sojiro end up going well wide, hitting the ground and disappearing in explosions of pure Essence. Garret and Most Assurant are a bit less fortunate however; the Lunar manages to deflect the worst of the explosive power with his sword, and the Alchemical succeeds in shooting down some of the bolts with her own Essence cannon, but both of them still find themselves rocked by a degree of explosive force. It's not enough to seriously hurt them though.

But the handful of Aigonites that went after Most Assurant are the unluckiest of all, as a handful of stray bolts from their sire annihilates them. The Alchemical is once again alone within the ruined palace.

New round, all characters regain one uncommitted mote. Storyteller characters will get to go first this time around.

EbonChevalier EbonChevalier and Random Word Random Word , your characters are currently at Medium Range from Most Assurant, who is in turn starting at Long Range from Aigaion. If you wish to continue taking part in this battle, you can each use your reflexive move actions to either move to within Extreme Range of Aigaion, or head back towards Most Assurant and the other Exalts. Otherwise I'll take you out of combat time.

Rykon Rykon , I'm going to treat Sojiro as being back on the ground owing to the fiction of your last post. This will put him back at Medium Range from Aigaion, but allow him to take the standard reflexive Move Action.

Aigaion speeds up as it continues to float away from Sojiro, putting itself at Extreme Range from him, as well as Garret and Most Assurant by extension. This behaviour does not go unnoticed by Ijara, Tuyak and the various mortals accompanying them.

"Look there!" A chambermaid calls out as Aigaion emerges from behind the ruined palace. "The monster's fleeing!"

"And is that a scar on the side of its head?" the head cook of the palace kitchen asks, having to squint to make it out within the evening's darkness. "Don't tell me someone managed to wound it..."

The Aigonites around the leviathan do not accompany it. Instead, they regroup and swarm both Sojiro and Garret, as if trying to keep them from getting near Aigaion.

[Aigaion is taking a Sprint Action this time around. The Aigonites meanwhile are performing a withering rush attack against Sojiro and Garret, and surrounding them with difficult terrain via the Mob Weight quality. Anima Flux will apply once Sojiro takes his turn. Psychie Psychie and Rykon Rykon , declare your defenses.]

The Tepet shikari finally lands upon the ground grinning ear to ear at the fervor his strike incited. Taking his stand on a broken rooftop, he swats aside each flailing minion with the full force of a tempest behind each swing. "Air superiority huh? That'll teach him... Shouldn't be long before one of those garrison slackers wakes up and sees the spectacle and clear bleeding shot they've got at this bastard now."

Ijara looks upon the terrible wound carved deep into the Behemoth's hide by Sojiro's masterful command of Aramitama in slackjawed awe. That shouldn't... he can't just... they hit it with the sword and it only slowed it down! Ugh, of course he fucking did. Burning shame colours her cheeks and pools hot behind her eyes, threatening to burst forth as tears. Thank Jupiter no one will remember me when we're done here. To be shown up by a cousin is one thing, to be shown a coward before family... unbearable.

Seeing Tulak turn to herd the civilians she calls out, eyes shining crimson, imploring, "Tulak. You do not trust me, but Creation needs you now and we have no time. I need you to go fishing. Harpoon the behemoth. Wound it. Prevent it from escaping," she proffers the spool of crimson thread she uses for her sorcery, "This line will not break while it binds an enemy of Creation. Lord Tepet will cross the line to finish it. The Garda Bird will carry you. I will protect the civilians. Go now! ...please"

So after a bit of thought on the matter, I decided to bring this battle to a close. Moving you all out of combat time.

Garret and Sojiro

As the Lunar and the Dragon-blooded cut down the Aigonites swarming them, a great fireball hurtles into the midst of the creatures attacking the Air Aspect, before exploding and reducing them all to charring corpses. Should he choose to look in the direction the fireball came from, Sojiro sees a black-haired man around his own age mounted upon a Simhata on another nearby rooftop, his left hand extended out in front of him, a Red Jade Daiklave in his other hand, and the unmistakable red glow of a Fire Aspect's anima emanating out from his body.

"Sorry we took so long to get here, cousin!" he calls out pleasantly, and Sojiro immediately recognizes the voice of Cathak Lirone, a friendly rival of his from the House of Bells. "Between the monsters and the destruction caused by the initial bombardment, the route was somewhat slower going than usual."

Were Sojiro to look down upon the streets, he'd see a group of about twenty mounted cavalry from the garrison assembled there, most of them bearing the signs of battle.

Everyone

All of you - from Ijara, Tuyak and their gathered mortals to Garret fighting with the remaining Aigonites - then notice something happening to the wounded and faraway figure of Aigaion. It's gathering essence around itself, the raw energy swirling around its titanic body like the winds of a maelstrom. Then, with a great flash and the accompanying sound of thunder, it simply vanishes, disappearing from above Kyoma.

The battle is over. What do you all do now?

Sojiro lowers Aramitama upon seeing Aigaion's retreat. "Well, for now, that looks like mission accomplished to me..." He exhales deeply as the thunder in his voice and lightning in his veins slowly began to calm. He turned to Lirone, frosty mist still showing in his breath.

"Can't say I'm surprised what with all hells breaking loose on a moment's notice. Speaking of, you'll find the Satrap unfortunately was among the first casualties. Afterward, a ragtag band of threshold powers stepped up to hold the line in the ensuing vacuum of chaos. There's a lot of egos at play and the instinct to squabble will no doubt be there, but I think it best we set that aside for now." Sojiro said looking over the urban battlefield. "We have other duties that come first. If they decide to become a threat themselves, however, you can trust that I will do my job as Shikari swiftly." He punctuates his assertion with a sudden flick of his daiklave, painting the cobbles beneath them in Aigaion's blood before sheathing Aramitama.

Garret and Sojiro

Lirone nudges his Simhata around, then has it jump the street onto Sojiro's building, allowing him to get a look at the destroyed palace and surrounding grounds for himself. It doesn't take long for him to notice Garret, at which point his expression sours.

"There's a damn Anathema here!?" he asks, keeping his voice down to a furious whisper that Garret is nevertheless able to pick up via his currently elephantine ears. Still though, the Fire Aspect remembers Sojiro's words, and sees the value in them. "Fine. I'll leave it alone as long as it extends me the same courtesy. But don't expect me to do much vouching for it."

He then looks up at the palace ruins, recalling Sojiro's mention of the Satrap's death. "Damn," he curses again. "We'd figured that with her blessings from the Dragons, she'd have more chance of surviving than most. Were there any other survivors besides you and...the Thresholders?"

Ijara was right, Tulak didn’t trust her. He trusted no one who had anything to do with that far away island that empossed it’s will in the world. But she was also right in that the beast needed to be killed. While he didn’t dabble in sorcery his beloved was adept with it. So wasn’t too wary and this but……realm born hand that was passing it to him did give him reservations. He tentatively reached out to grab it but the incredible build up of essence caught his attention. He turned to the monster in time ti see it disappear with a thunderclap. He narrowed his eyes at the spot it occupied it could be anywhere now. “Looks like chase is on servant of Crimson Conqueroress.” Random Word Random Word
