Fantasy Cursed Island

Jerry moved the makeshift nest so it wasn't something that would be tripped on while a half asleep Jerry or a pacing Asta moved about, before placing the egg on it.

"Aren't you forgetting something, Shuffle?", Nyah asked. "Veo will need water- OW!" A pebble bounced off of the djinn's forehead.

"Catch," jerry tossed the flask over now that she had the djinn's attention

Nyah looked irritated, but gestured for Shuffle to lead on back to Veo and Emil.

Shuffle smiled at Nyah. “Good catch.” She turned and headed back to the laundry area.

Asta watched them step out before looking at the egg again. “I don’t know how long eggs take to hatch. I suppose we should use that time to prepare.”

"I don't know, either," Jerry agreed, "I have an idea of when it was laid, but monster life cycles are Joanne's thing. I just know how to steal from them." She started re-assembling the bed with the remaining blankets and pillows. "Okay, so we know the turtle's mother had an ice and steam breath weapon, we don't know what the father head, but it's safe to assume we're going to want water handy at all times."

---------------
"Did you find any, oh," Veo looked up from figuring out how to heat the water as Shuffle returned empty handed. "No one else?"

Asta nodded. “If we had an extra bottomless flask, that wouldn’t be as much of an issue.”

—————

Shuffle shook her head. “Jerry said everyone might have more after Erina finishes making clothes.”

"Well, we kinda have that," Jerry fished another bottle out of the bag, "I don't know if this works the same, though." She checked to make sure it wasn't the bottle she'd put aside for her own ends. "There's only four of these, though, and three are occupied." One was the health potion she'd given Veo, one was the language potion for Lyak and Raine, and the other Jerry hadn't shown or explained to anyone, not really sure why she'd done it herself.

--------------------
"Hmm," Veo glanced over at Emil, "Well then, I guess for now we'll just wash bedding." She started filling the pot, "Shuffle, can you crawl under the stand and light that pile of wood up?"

“Mm. If we ever have a chance to get another, we should take it. We’ll also need a supply of food. All young creatures need to feed often as they grow.”

—————

Shuffle nodded and crawled over, lighting up the wood as told.

Emil kept an eye on her to make sure she didn’t wander too close to the sheets again.

Jerry nodded, "And I don't know how we're gonna do that, everything down here's either corrupted or summoned." She shook her head, "I don't know why i thought this would be anything like making a bed."

------------
"Thank you," the water started to heat up while Veo looked for some points to hang a drying line from.

“This is a learning experience. I expect we’ll make mistakes along the way, but we can learn from that.”

—————

Shuffle nodded as she sat up, looking in at the water.

Jerry sighed and laid back on the bed. "The damn thing ain't even hatched yet and it's already stressing me out." Eventually, she stood up and walked back to the desk. Might as well be productive. "If I can find a mana source, I might be able to do what Adran does to summon food."

----------------
"No," Nyah grabbed Shuffle's shoulders and turned her away from the pool, glaring at the couple all the while. "Stop getting the children involved in your mess!"

Asta looked over at Jerry. “If you ever feel too stressed, I can purr for you.”

—————

Shuffle blinked in confusion as she was pulled from the water. “I wasn’t gonna jump in or anything.”

This time Jerry did break out laughing. "You're gonna what!" That was a new one.

------------------
"It doesn't matter, let's go play with Fia, would you like to hear a story, I think it's storytime," Nyah tried to herd Shuffle towards Fia so she could keep the little ones together.

"I think we're in trouble," Veo glanced at the departing djinn and her charge, then back at Emil.

Asta blinked. “Is that not... Is purring not soothing to other races and creatures?”

—————

Shuffle was still confused, but she went along anyway. Stories were fun, after all.

Emil sighed. “I think we’re lucky Shuffle opened that box. Now she has someone to keep an eye on her all the time.”

"I just... hehe, gods, I'm losing it." Jerry shook her head, "It's more unnerving when something larger than a housecat purrs." She shook her head again, "I'm sorry, it's just.. you..." She chuckled and glanced at Asta, "Big bad chimera purring like a kitten."

--------------
"Yep, the moment Raine and Lyak came into the picture I lost my ability to control the kids."

Asta started blushing and furrowed his brow. “I... I’m not a kitten! And I’d only purr for you...” He glanced away. Now he felt embarrassed about all of it.

—————

Emil nodded. “At least Lyak seems to be staying with Erina. And I don’t believe Raine is a child.”

Jerry got herself under control, "It's fine," she smiled at the chimera's reaction, "See, that's what I'm talking about, develop a personality."

--------------
"I wouldn't know," Veo shrugged, "I'm familiar with beast-folk children, not serpent-folk children."

Asta glanced at her again. “...I suppose it is a nice change of pace from my usual mood. We’re usually in some amount of danger, so I suppose I get stuck on trying to protect all the time.”

—————

“Ah. Yes, she’s a kobold. Their kind typically doesn’t get much bigger than she already is.”

Jerry smiled at the chimera, "It is a nice break," she agreed. Not having to worry about which of thirteen people including her dragon were going to get them killed for a few days was a break Jerry hadn't expected for a while. "I was starting to think perpetually pissed off was becoming my default setting." She started flipping through Lyak's manuals, getting back to work.

------------
"Then i guess she might be an adult," Veo shruggend and wrung out the sheet before hanging it on the line and going through with the other items. "I wonder if she realizes wearing a skirt over her tail is a bad idea for modesty or not?"

Asta nodded. “We all needed a good break.” He went quiet for a moment. “Hm... Perhaps I’ll see about playing again. And actually try this time.”

—————

“I don’t know if she’s aware, but if she’s anything like kobolds I’ve met before, she might not care. They wore clothing only for decor, not modesty. But they also stayed in groups while Raine seemed to be alone, so she may be an exception. I can’t guess her reasons.”

"Good idea," Jerry turned her focus to her work, translating the book.

---------------
"And we have enough of a hard time making Shuffle wear clothes already," Veo shook her head.

Asta glanced at her before heading out to leave her to her work.

—————

“At least she doesn’t actively try to remove them all the time. She mostly just forgets to put them back on.”

"There is that," Veo hung another blanket on the line, "I don't think laundry is going to be a regular occurrence," she shook her head, "We've got time because we're going to be here for a while, but I don't think that's going to happen a lot."

Emil nodded. “But it is nice doing it now. One could almost believe we’re just living our lives rather than risking them.”

"I wish that's all we were doing," Veo agreed, looking down a bit, "But you and the others want to get back to the surface," and they had to go deeper into danger in order to do that.

Emil nodded. “If only there were a better way. But the curse is keeping us in, so it has to be dealt with in order to leave.”

That was a necessary evil, unfortunately. Veo wasn't sure what exactly was keeping the group down here, but they thought they could stop it by going deeper, and Jerry usually had a plan for these things, so hopefully they were correct. "I wonder if we could make something to do laundry, you know?" She gestured to the table, "I mean, someone figured out to take that massive table fold in on itself to the size and weight of a playing card, it can't be that hard to make something that washes laundry."
