Rain poured down in sheets, spilling into a vast and growing river that now replaced a previously-sodden tarmac road. It was as if that night was warning her away from the task she had made up her mind solidly to perform. Thinking back on the conversation she had had in the dry, warmly-lit lobby of her office it all seemed ludicrous now. A rogue, hidden in their midst? That didn’t happen. The Watch had been screened thoroughly ever since the first murders had been uncovered. It was where the public mind went first and of course it was, The Watch knew almost everything there was to know about the animal companions, and had the greatest amount of research delving into them.

The bond was revered as sacred by some, an animal gaining sapient thought and speech the moment it was brought within meters of the proper candidate. Each time a bond was formed the human and paired animal became inseparable, and if the human was ever killed, the animal would slowly revert back to its previously unaware state. This was another reason the rogue animals were so fascinating to her. They had seemingly severed this bond, often killing their human companions to do so but somehow had retained their intelligence. It thwarted everything The Watch thought they knew about Companions…and that was why she had to see this through.

With a renewed sense of purpose she wrapped her gradually dampening coat more tightly about her shoulders and called out ahead to the hairy, lumbering form leading her way.

How much farther Boris?

The shadow looked around, his muzzle glistening in the wet light of a street lamp and his tiny eyes barely visible in the gloom of the night.

Not much.” Came a deep voice, rumbling up through the bear’s thick throat. “The contact I have is nervous about meeting agents of The Watch.”

She couldn’t help but note the strange edge to his tone. Something seemed to be eating up thoughts in a mind she knew was oftentimes sharper than her own. She opened her mouth to ask him what the matter was, but decided against it.

The corner he turned lead into a dark side-street, completely devoid of the dull-orange streetlight glow that had given her the only comfort out in this dismal storm.

Down there?” She asked, starting to feel a bit uneasy. The bear nodded seriously and disappeared into the inky black. She took a breath and followed.

The few moments that passed as her eyes adjusted seemed to crawl by at a snail’s pace, but finally faint shapes began to appear before her. The familiar, hulking form of her companion Boris along with not one, but several others. A chill ran down her spine as she felt the eyes on her.

Boris, you said there would be one.” She turned to the bear, catching one of his eyes as it reflected the now distant light of the main road. It was not the warm gaze she was used to but cold, bordering on wild. The growls that rose from the darkness made her gasp.

I lied.

Black shapes surged forward and she caught the flash of white teeth in the dark. The Watch agent acted more quickly than the rogues had anticipated and she caught one in the jaw with the heel of her shoe. Even as the beast yelped in surprise she knew she couldn’t run, so she did the only thing left for her to do.

A com-watch was fastened to her wrist, there against Boris’ specific instructions to leave it behind. She jammed her finger on the button and shouted into the receiver.

This is Agent Kelly! Code feral I repeat, CODE FERAL!

It was all she had time to say before the dark beasts converged upon her, and in the pitch of that rain-filled night, not one person heard her screams.

The sound of heels echoing down the white corridor was his first indication that the agent summoned was on her way.

You have the list?

The young woman appeared as the frosted glass doors parted for her and didn’t miss a beat flipping to the second page of a document displayed on her tablet.

Several convincing candidates. They’ll need special training, but I believe they have the potential we’re looking for.

Good. Reach out.

There was no need for formalities in this case, but her basic training made her snap off a quick salute to the superior sitting behind the elegant, modern glass desk.

Light trickled through the water of wall-length fish tanks, casting the room in a dancing, blue light.

Agent Strong turned and left, striding purposefully back to the elevator and then down to her spacious office. Her companion was lounging on a velvet couch in the corner.

That was quick, did he even look at the list.

The woman grinned, “
I suspect he already saw it. They’re still tapping my computer. I don’t think they fully trust me yet.” The civet looked up at her through a dark mask of black fur, scrunching one eyebrow in a critical look, an expression that she had adopted from her human companion, though on the civet it looked much more comical.

It’s what I would do.” The woman shrugged. “Now, let’s get to work. We’ll have to pay for their transport and hotel, to make it appealing I’ll add a bonus to be delivered by their local post service. No one believes e-mail offers nowadays anyway.

The civet leapt from the couch to coil enthusiastically about the computer screen as the agent sat down at her desk.

Do I still get to test them?” She asked showing her tiny white teeth in a hopeful grin.

Of course.

Aaaaalec…psst. Alec.” From his position beside the bed Duik could barely see the tousled hair of the man who had now been his inseparable friend for the entirety of his memorable life.

Hey buddy! Your phone just went off.” In response the man rolled over and grumbled inaudibly.

Duik frowned, pursing his lips in thought. His ears suddenly pricked as a grand idea entered his mind. He snuck away from the bed, carefully stepping over open books and clothes strewn haphazardly about the room. He turned back to face the bed and surged forward.

Cannon ball!” He yelled, taking a flying leap at the lump under the duvet. Alec’s eyes snapped open at the hyena’s yell and he only had time to think ‘not again!’ before a hundred pounds of spotted prankster landed on his face.

Mmmph!” Alec’s muffled cry was almost unheard over Duik’s high-pitched laugh.

Alec struggled to twist around and shove the furry mass away. Duik let him, tangled in the blankets he rolled off the bed, taking them too and leaving his partner exposed save a pair of green boxers.

Alec sat up and glared daggers at the giggling animal. Un-phased Duik sprung to his feet and smacked the button of his stereo, the ipod perched atop already set to the needed song.

So get up get up heeeey!” Duik sang as Mandisa’s ‘Good Morning’ filled the silence of the room.

Alec tried to glare harder, but the corners of his mouth here already lifting in the hint of a smile. He rose and ran a hand through his dark, scruffy hair.

Come on you goofball.

The pair got ready for the day as the rest of the song played, Alec shaving around his unique goatee and putting on a crisp, green silk shirt and his usual vest and hat, Duik rubbing himself on the brush pad fixed to one wall until his coat and reddish-tinged mane gleamed.

Oh yeah, you’re phone!” Duik remembered at the breakfast table as Alec served him jerky strips and a glass of milk.

When Alec checked the device he frowned at the unknown sender. He scanned the contents and his expression didn’t change. Duik looked up for a moment.

It’s not—

No no. It’s nothing to do with my father.” He said distractedly, reading the hyena’s tone instead of his worried expression. Duik let out a breath he had been holding.

I think I just got promoted.

Duik paused, then tilted his head as if it was a nice to know fact and kept eating.

We’re meeting at the Lion Royal hotel just by Central Park.

That’s Leeon Royale.” Duik corrected him, using the French pronunciation. “We better get going then! NYC’s a long commute.

D?” Alec said as he finally looked up from the message. "We need to pack.

~~~~
Agent Strong re-checked the room she had told the hotel staff to bring her guests. The Watch was always paranoid about other agencies spying on them, but Amber had been trained to clean a room of bugs well before she joined The Watch. Calista helped and then they had finished the pair ordered coffee and tea for the room and promptly left.
The hotel was exceedingly grand. Baroque-styles guilded furniture was spread across lavishly-plush, red wall-to-wall carpets. The drapes were heavy, patterned things, embroidered with gold thread and finished with thick rope cord tie-backs. The entire establishment simply screamed 'posh'.
We’ll appear when they do.” She told the civet as they made their way to a tea room across the hall. Caista nodded with another sharp-toothed grin.
This is going to be so much fun.
Eos' eyes popped open as he finally noticed the first rays of the morning sun penetrating his small room. The stag raised gracefully from his slumber and shaking his head left and right he looked around. The silence which still lingered in the room was almost too deep - much different from what he has gotten used to in the past years. It was a nice change to actually sleep in a room and not in a makeshift home yet still somehow something was still not right.
" Zoe... " his companion was nowhere to be found in the apartment but this did not surprise the elder stag. She was always someone who woke up much earlier than he did to do her morning routines. Eos rustled his fur and stepped outside of the room, walking down the corridor. The frightened look of men followed her like his shadow but again he has gotten used to it - it was not an everyday sight to see a living stag walking down the hallways alone.
As he made his way to the top of the building towards the balcony a cacophony of thoughts raced in his mind. So much had changed recently, he knew not what the future would hold. After the catastrophic outcome of that battle he and Zoe had never spoken about that incident - he knew that his friend was strong but he also felt the churning guild still lingering within her heart, no matter how badly did she try to conceal it.
Stepping outside he found the golden haired girl meditating, sitting on the roof, eyes closed, her smooth face glowing red from the dawn. He said nothing but walked up to her, sitting next to the girl. Strangely enough Zoe was already in her uniform, her trusty bow resting on her back with a quiver of arrows. It was unusual to see her preparing for battle this early, especially in this strange, alien city. For long minutes they did not speak and they just paid attention to the waking city as the noises of cars and men rushing to work filled the air. But then finally Zoe spoke.
" You are late. " she said, her eyes still remaining closed.
" My wakening was timely. " Eos shrugged " It is thou who gets up this early. Thy methods are rather strange to me... but they seem to be working for you well. "
" So it would seem. " Zoe smirked " My mind needs clearing after the long night - the peace of the dawn clears both my spirit and my will, allowing me to focus on the task ahead. And today I need it more than ever. "
" Is that so? " Eos raised his eyebrows in surprise as Zoe showed him a letter.
" Do you not wonder why did we come to this noisy city in the first place? " she asked, now her cold gaze on her companion " We have an invitation, Eos. We must not disappoint our... friends. "
Eos skimmed through the paper quickly then looked at her.
" An invitation? From unknown people? " he was baffled " You surely can not consider going there alone! This can very well be a trap. "
" I am not going alone. " Zoe shrugged " You are coming with me. "
" Thou know what I meant! "
The girl now stood up, her resolute, stern expression met with that of Eos' and the stag almost took a step backwards so intense was Zoe's gaze. He had still not gotten used to her being this serious... to him she was still the sweet, cheerful little girl she always was. But he knew that sooner or later he had to accept the fact that that Zoe was long gone... and will not be coming back.
" I am not a fool you know, old friend. " she finally backed down, crossing her arms " These people seem to be... something else. And organization of some sort. Although who they are and what they represent I know not just yet. Still, we must seize this opportunity and walk into this - if it is a trap we will know it soon enough. "
She turned back and headed downstairs.
" I will meet you outside of this apartment. Do not tarry. "
Eos watched her slender form disappearing as he sighed heavily. So the circle began anew... they were once more on the hunt. He just hoped that they would not rush headlong into the jaws of death again.
The journey towards the hotel was slow at best. The traffic was horrible so midway Zoe decided that they would walk - her reasoning being that that way she could map the city to prepare numerous escape routes shout they need to disappear quickly. That they were an attraction was an understatement: almost everyone eyed them curiously and with awe, everyone made way for the noble white stag and the stern looking archer as they walked.
" They art not amused. " Eos mumbled " They art frightened probably. "
" Their own business. " Zoe replied firmly " We are not here to make a good impression, we are here on a mission. That is all that matters. "
" Sometimes I wonder if thy love for people still remains after I hear thee talk like this... "
" I can assure you that my will is still unwavering. " she snorted " I just care not about venomous looks any more. "
Shaking his head Eos sighed disapprovingly but followed Zoe nonetheless. Eventually they arrived in front of the grand hotel and stood still to bask in its glory. It was truly a marvelous sign.
" Fancy. " Zoe nodded.
" Indeed wondrous. " Eos mimicked " What now? "
Zoe cracked her knuckles.
" Now? We make our grand entrance and wait. "
With that she opened the door and was greeted with the grand hall. She was pleased to see that it was vacant, only few souls lingered in the room. Seeing that she was probably too early she decided to take a seat in the farthest corner of the room, waiting patiently to see the events unfold. Eos followed her and after cleaning his hooves he also laid down on the carpet, observing his surroundings.
The sun peaked over the horizon, it's golden rays bathing Rin in a warm glow as he sat cross legged in the garden terrace of his penthouse. *bbzzzzzt bbzzzzzt* the quiet solace of his meditation interrupted for the second time this morning, he simply breathed out and continued, as if he heard nothing. *bbzzzzzt bbzzzzzt* the phone vibrated once more, the movements carrying it precariously close to the edge of the bench it was sitting on. The bench itself was placed next to a small Koi pond in the middle of the large rectangular space.
A soft rustling could be heard in the flower bed near his seated position. He didn't have to open his eyes to see what it was he just smiled, before the words were even spoken. "You would think after all these yearss they would know not to call you thiss early" Hakuji retorted grumpily, her peace and quiet interrupted for the final time. Her voice was soft and smooth, like sweet milk dripping from a ladle, even with the attitude. "In their defense Haku, we travel so much it may very well be lunch time for us depending on where we are." He responded with a smile as he slowly stood up, his meditation complete.
As he stood he cast his eyes on downtown Tokyo, he had just gotten back from his latest research trip two nights ago, and he was probably going to have to leave soon. He wanted to remember every moment he laid eyes on Japan. He turned to the center of his garden, towards the low wooden bench with the cellphone teetering on the edge of disaster. He began to step towards it when it began to vibrate again. *bbzzzzzt bbzzzzzt * "Crap" He muttered to himself as he watched it sway back and forth, then finally begin it's fall into the water.
It wasn't that he wasn't fast enough to reach it, in reality it wasn't all that far. He just didn't care for it, he had plans today so anything the watch might want would have to wait, as far as he was concerned. He shrugged and turned away, only to turn back seconds later when he didn't hear the splash, but a soft chuckle followed by more rustling. Haku slithered up to him, her pearly white tail had the phone secured as she made her way up his leg, then his arm and finally to rest on his shoulders. He sighed as he walked inside, and turned the phone on. He found and opened the text message that was sent after the calls were missed. He shrugged and tossed the phone onto the counter. "we're off to New York again Haku. But first.." Haku shifted "the sshrine, first the shrine" she said finishing his thoughts. It had been a while since he paid his respects, and he wanted to do it before he left again. He never knew how long he would be gone for, whether it was for the watch, or for his own research."
Beth stepped cautiously through the revolving glass doors, blinking a little against the harsh white light inside. It was still dark outside, too early in the morning for the sun to rise in Seattle. A couple officers looked up and gave her a friendly smile, used to seeing the reclusive girl and her owl so early in the morning. They had become a familiar sight in the last few weeks, even though their help wasn't officially acknowledged. She walked through the bullpen, knocking politely on a door that read "Sergeant Keller." Totus, perched on her extended arm, clacked his beak in annoyance. He was hungry, and rightfully so. Hunting wasnt very good in the city.
"Come in," called a masculine voice. She pushed the door open and slipped inside, letting Totus fly to a file cabinet in the corner. Normally, he would perch on the desk, and his grumpy mood was noticed.
"Totus not feeling friendly?" A young man sat behind the desk, oddly young for his post, but it was no surprise with the griffin that sat next to him. The powerful creature gave a nod, but regally chose to remain silent.
Beth looked over her shoulder at the owl, who pretended to be sleeping, and shrugged. "We've been in the city too long. He prefers trees, over steel and glass."
The griffin made a sound that could have been an agreement, and Ben Keller indicated she should sit. He held out an envelope, which she took without hesitation. Inside was a check, and a photograph of a smiling family. Parents, teary eyed but beaming, their arms around a girl in the same emotional state, streaked with dirt and wrapped in a blanket.
"You did good." He said, as she smiled at the photo and tucked it back inside.
"Not on my own. But you wouldnt invite me into your office just to pay me." Beth said, and a ruffle of feathers was heard from the corner.
Sergeant Keller frowned, his mood changing instantly. "No. I wouldnt." A large brown envelope appeared in his hand, and he tossed it unceremoniously onto the desk. "A courier dropped this off for you."
Totus became fully alert and glided to Beth's shoulder. It looked awkward to have a large bird perched there, but she hardly felt the weight. "There is no record of you working for us. Not even in the news. No one should know that they can contact you here."
Beth blinked, in unison with Totus, and picked up the envelope. They had been hopping hotels since they got to the city, so the precinct was the only place they showed up reliably. So it made sense, even though it didnt. As she sifted through the contents, Totus watched. As they reached the end of the packet, Ben spoke again.
"Im going to ask this once, Beth. Should I be worried?" His brown eyes were heavy with concern as they studied her. Had things been different, he might have asked her out, maybe even loved her, but..
Two pairs of eyes, one green and one black, rose at the same time, reflecting each other. His gut twisted unhappily. Beth shrugged again. This time, Totus spoke. "There does not seem to be any cause for immediate concern. However, it would seem our employment with your office is at an end."
Unsatisfied, but knowing better than the press them, the young man sighed. The griffin turned its golden eyes onto the pair, and nodded. Its voice was so deep they felt it in the soles of their feet. "Take care, then. I hope to meet again."
The dismissal was clear. The pair respectfully nodded, as it was the first time the magnificent creature had ever spoken to them, and rose to leave. Beth opened the door, allowing Totus to fly ahead, when Sergeant Keller's voice sounded again.
"Stay in touch, Beth." He said, watching the beautiful young woman turn and look at him again. The familiar uncomfortable pit settled in his stomach, even though she smiled and said, "If I can."
Many hours later, over a bit of scotch before bed, he puzzled over the uncomfortable reaction he had. Xior, his griffin, spoke. "All people you have met are seeking something. Love, money, power. You seek justice, but also love. You wanted to love Beth, because she is beautiful and kind. But you cannot, as much as you would wish to. You do not know how to understand her. Unlike you, she is not seeking. She is complete and content, she and her Totus. It is very strange, for a human, especially one of her age."
The man gave a grunt, and added those words to the ideas in his mind. They only seemed to muddle him more. And then suddenly, understanding hit him. As pretty as she was, as kind as she was, Beth unsettled him. Because when she looked at him, she looked at him with the same eyes as her companion. Friendly, attentive, sweet even, but ultimately uncaring and without understanding- the look of someone with no need for human life outside their own. It was a wonder she was saving people and not hurting them.
Beth and Totus, equally unaffected by their oddness, carried their few belongings with them out of their latest hotel. It would be a short trip to their cabin to collect the rest of their needs, and then they would only need to follow the travel itinerary in the packet. Beth was curious, and Torus was unconcerned, so why not? New York City.. This could be fun.
Or it could be a very bad idea. Beth was thinking more along those lines as she stood looking at the hotel. It was massive, ornate, everything she didnt like. Totus, perched on her shoulder again, rubbed his beak against her ear. An odd motion to others, but comforting to the girl. "If you say so.." She mumbled, and entered the building, deciding already that it would be a very long day.
Leandra woke to the sound of light rain tapping at the window near her bed. Blinking while trying to wake herself up from her usual morning grogginess, Leandra slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position to see Luness perched at the end of her bed, head tucked under one of her wings.
Glancing across the room to see her brother's messy bed, Leandra rolled her eyes, as she knew he was probably already long gone on his usual morning walk with Falarion. Leandra never understood how her brother could wake up so early like that.
Hearing a beep from her nightstand, Leandra leaned across her bed to pick up her phone, frowning slightly when she saw the email that apparently came from an unknown sender.
Shifting so that her legs were on the floor and hanging off of her bed now, Leandra opened up her phone to read the email thoroughly and soon was grinning.
Jumping to her feet and throwing her arms up, Leandra suddenly shouted, "We get to go to the US!"
Startled from her sleep, Luness suddenly squawked in alarm and flew up from the bed only to land again once she saw the room was clear and nobody was in danger. Glaring at Leandra, Luness then asked, "What in the world was that all about?"
Grinning at Luness, Leandra replied, "Time to pack up our stuff, Luness. We're going to the USA."
Cocking her head in a confused manner while Leandra began getting ready for the day, Luness asked her, "Why are we going to the US?"
With her combat boots in hand, Leandra walked over to one of her suitcases and said over her shoulder, "Because we're special enough that someone wants us on a special team. Look, can you just go outside and find my brother and his dog? I'm not about to pack everything on my own here."
Letting out a light sigh at having to leave Leandra alone and fly in the rain, Luness knew better than to argue. Hopping over to the windowsill, Luness then flew outside once Leandra had opened the window for her.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Half an hour later, Manjano walked into the twins' shared apartment to find that his sister was already dressed and ready for the day on top of being fully packed.
Raising an eyebrow at everything, Manjano's thoughts were interrupted by Falarion barging in the doorway past him and excitedly barking while thinking, 'We get to go to the US! Do we get to try hamburgers while we're there? Can we eat french fries? Wait, aren't those made by the French? Why are they in the US then? Wh-'
Manjano quickly interrupted Falarion's usual rambling by thinking to him, 'Stop. We need to get packed so we can get a move on here.'
Falarion immediately calmed down and even sat down on his rump before he nodded excitedly at Manjano and rushed to find his ball amongst the cluttered side of their shared room.
As he began packing his own gear and clothes, Leandra walked into their room and grinned at her brother before saying, "Can you believe we're finally getting out of here? Or that someone thinks we're qualified enough to be on some special team!?"
Letting out a nearly inaudible sigh, Manjano then said quietly, "Sure." While he was excited about getting away from this place, Manjano wasn't so sure about this team thing. He'd never really been one to work well with others.
Rolling her eyes at her brother's lack of emotion plus his slight irritation, Leandra turned away before saying over her shoulder, "Fine, don't be excited. Look, I'll go hail us a taxi so we can get to the airport on time for our flight. Hurry up with your packing."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Arriving at the airport, the twins stood with their luggage just outside of the large building in awe. Luness was calmly perched on Leandra's shoulder while Falarion was running circles around Manjano, his excitement nearly bursting out of his furry body.
About an hour or so later, the twins ate breakfast and got coffee before finding the private jet waiting for them to leave.
After settling in the jet with their companions, Leandra stood up suddenly from her seat, surprising Luness and leaving her to fly by herself in slight annoyance. Grinning again, Leandra rushed to the front of the jet and asked the pilot, "How long until we get there?"
The pilot glanced calmly back at Leandra and replied, "Ma'am, we haven't even taken off yet and this won't be a short flight. I'd suggest you hunker down and get some sleep."
Sighing, Leandra sat back down, Luness having already decided to sit across from Leandra instead of with her.
Glancing over at her brother, who was still silently staring out the window, Leandra asked him softly,
"Will you miss it?"
Shifting his gaze away from the window and at his sister, Manjano cocked his head slightly before replying quietly, "Miss what?"
Smiling softly, Leandra replied, "Good point."
Suddenly, Falarion sprinted out from the back of the jet with a small bottle of vodka in his mouth, holding it quite proudly. Trotting over before sitting beside Manjano, Falarion then offered the bottle to him while thinking, 'I found this for you!'
The corner of Manjano's mouth twitched and he took the bottle from Falarion before thinking to him, 'Good job, buddy. Thanks.'
Excited at being praised by Manjano, Falarion immediately stood back up only to fall down and sprawl out, as the jet began to take-off.
Laughing at Falarion's little stunt, Leandra grinned at Manjano, who leaned over the arm of his chair and twisted around to make sure Falarion was okay. Seeing his maned wolf companion on his side and grinning, Manjano sat back in his seat and decided that his companion was fine while taking the first sip of his vodka, which no doubt would be gone by the time they landed.
About ten minutes later after take-off, the twins both were passed out in their seats while their companions excitedly explored the jet and looked outside at the clouds and city disappearing in the distance. Soon enough though, everyone was asleep on the jet, as it began its journey to the US.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
About a day or so later, the twins were in a taxi in NYC, en route to the location they were told to meet up at.
While mostly quiet, the twins exchanged a knowing glance as the taxi slowed to a halt out of the lush and rather fancy hotel that they were about to get to stay in. This was definitely not a luxury that the twins were ever going to get used to.
Exiting the taxi with their companions, the twins were pleased to see someone come out and help take their luggage in for them, though both of the twins kept a backpack of essential gear on them. You never knew when certain things could come in handy.
Entering the lobby, the twins paused to look up and all around them. This was ridiculously luxurious for a hotel to stay in, especially in the middle of a city like this one. At least it was cleaner than outside.
Luness remained perched on Leandra's shoulder while she jerked her head this way and that to look at everything.
Falarion was the first one to notice that they weren't alone in the lobby, as he barked at a white stag sitting down beside a human not too far away from them. Luckily, despite his excited tendencies, Falarion was a hundred percent loyal to Manjano and knew better than to run off while in a public setting.
Manjano shifted his gaze toward the distant pair, but already decided against any unnecessary social interaction. Maybe they could find some bar in here for the time being.
Walking away from Leandra and Luness, Manjano and Falarion, who was loyally staying exactly by Manjano's side, the pair began checking out the rooms in the lobby area for a bar set-up.
Watching her brother wander away, Leandra rolled her eyes and said to Luness, "Time to meet our future partners, Luness."
Before she could make am move towards the woman with the stag though, Leandra heard the door open behind her and turned around to see someone walk in with an owl companion on her shoulder just like Leandra and Luness.
Grinning at this sight, Leandra confidently walked up to the woman before holding out her hand and saying, "Hey, my name's Leandra. Sorry ahead of time for the Australian accent. I know some people have a hard time understanding me if they don't share the same accent."
Meanwhile, Luness cocked her head at the woman's owl companion, curiosity piqued at meeting another bird, even if they weren't remotely alike.
Rin stepped out of a dingy yellow cab, on the other side of central park. This wasn't his first trip into the city, and he didn't have an exact time for the meeting so he figured why not a little detour. He reached in and grabbed his sword and a slim carry on suit case. Hakuji uncoiled herself from the seat and wrapped herself around his arm as he paid the cabbie and closed the door. The man took off with tires screeching, he was clearly unnerved by the large white snake in the back seat. Rin only chuckled as he turned to face the large green expanse on each side of the black paved road winding into the park. Hakuji re-positioned herself to hang loosely around his shoulders and neck. She was used to the stares, the disgusted glares and the nervous side looks. She had learned to live through it, not let it bother her. For Rin's sake at least. She knew how much he hated when her feelings were hurt.
In minutes they were near the heart of the park, and heading South East towards the large pond that he remembered from his last visit. It was quiet and nearly empty the last time he was there. He had been able to enjoy a moment of piece in the noisy city, but as he drew closer he realized this time it wouldn't be so. There was a man standing in the middle of the paved road, dressed as a clown putting on a show for children and passersby alike. Rin shrugged and let out a sigh, he was too close to the pond, and the crowd was getting louder. "Maybe tonight" Whispered Hakuji as he turned left and followed the road back out onto the sidewalk. He walked the last few blocks to the hotel in silence. He stopped at a corner deli and picked up a quick bite. "They don't make'm like this anywhere else Haku, that's for sure" He said with a smile at his bacon egg and cheese sandwich. He finished the sandwich before he reached the hotel doors and tossed the aluminum wrapper into a trash can on the corner. A door man opened the door for him as he reached for the brass bar. He stepped into the lobby in time to see other animals, bonded it seemed with their humans. Deep into the city it wasn't necessarily odd to see so many animals, but it wasn't like they were everywhere in manhattan either. He was definitely where he needed to be he thought to himself with a sigh as he practically slid into the room on silent feet. He handed his luggage to the bellhop and tried his best to be polite when declining to release his sword. "That doesn't go anywhere we don't" Hakuji spoke up when the bellhop made another attempt to relieve Rin of his luggage. She had raised her head and was peering at the young man with inky black eyes. The man yelped and hopped back, he was pale now he wasn't expecting this. Rin did his best to stifle a chuckle as the bellhop nearly ran to the elevator to deliver the bags. Rin gave the concierge a slight bow and a smile as he turned and made his way to the other side, towards the sign that said bar. "You didn't have to scare the poor man" He whispered to his companion, she shook lightly as she let out a slight laugh and responded. "You're just mad he couldn't understand your accent." "But I am sorry, I didn't mean to scare him" She added as an afterthought as she rested her head back down. "Watch your step" She whispered as he brought his free hand up to wipe hair from his eyes. "Huh?" He uttered, confused as he came to a quick stop, just before tumbling into another person in front of him who seemed to be moving a bit slower than him. A little embarrassed he bowed and apologized to the stranger, his eyes focusing down he noticed another animal at the person's feet. A wolf of some sort it appeared to be. "So sorry, my apologies" He managed to stumble out as he apologized to the stranger, his hands at his side, leaving Hakuji to rearrange herself so that she wouldn't fall.
Just as Manjano was about to walk into the bar area of the lobby, he came to an abrupt halt at the sight of a young man, who was most likely around his age. He seemed to be rather distracted considering he'd almost walked straight into Manjano and Falarion.
With Falarion at his left side to help make up for his lack of vision in his left eye, and to make up for the fact that Falarion couldn't see out of his right eye, Manjano didn't nearly feel as uncomfortable as he normally would in this social interaction. Though, it still felt uncomfortable, especially with the snake companion that the man had. Not that Manjano has anything against snakes, but their eyes were always something that creeped out Manjano.
Silently staring back at the man after he'd said his apology, Manjano then quickly thought to Falarion, 'I really hope this guy isn't on our 'special' team. He seems to be a bit clumsy.'
Falarion chuckled at Manjano's thoughts before responding, 'Nah, he's just as distracted by this place as we are!'
Deciding that Manjano wasn't probably going to say anything, Falarion quickly spoke up to help Manjano get out of this uncomfortable situation, "Apology accepted. Now, if you'll excuse us..."
Without Falarion fully realizing it, he too had an Australian accent, which he had picked up from Manjano over the years. Both of the twins' companions shared the accent, though neither of them seemed to ever think twice about it.
The minute Falarion trailed off, Manjano dodged around the man and made his way straight for the bar. Falarion trotted after his companion after a moment, having been distracted by the sight of the sword at the man's side.
Rejoining Manjano's side at the bar, by literally jumping up and sitting on a stool, Falarion then thought to him, 'That man has a sword! I wonder where he learned how to use one.'
Quietly ordering a vodka, Manjano then glanced back at the man before thinking to Falarion, 'Personally, I only care if he's good with it. I wonder if I could disarm him with my staff.'
Falarion raised an eyebrow at the wooden and curved staff on Manjano's back before thinking, 'I think he'll probably just end up slicing through it, personally.'
Scowling at Falarion's response, Manjano took the first sip of his vodka before he returned his vision to the bar in front of him. This was certainly turning out to be quite the unique team of humans and companions so far.
"Oh my god you're from Australia!?" Duik did not wait to be invited into the conversation but bounded up to Leandra, soft brown eyes widening when he caught sight of the phoenix on her shoulder.
"Its rude to stare D." Alec had just handed off their luggage to the attendants at the door and strode into the lobby as if he belonged there, which he would have...but that seemed like a lifetime ago. He admired the crystal chandelier handing from the high, arched ceiling, his hands resting casually in his pockets. he had a feeling the young men and women gathering were somehow connected with his mystery letter.
"Name's Alec, and this is Duik." Alec held out a hand politely, Duik saluted the girls with a dark paw and a grin.
"Dude, I'm totally getting like, a secret spy team thing from this, oh, bro, did you manage to trace that e-mail?"
Alec had put his tracer program to work the moment they had left the house. He checked his phone. "No luck, whoever sent it made damn sure it couldn't be traced. I'm going to assume nobody here knows anymore than I do." He looked up from his screen to peer through his unruly bangs. The slowly increasing collection of people seemed to be from all over the world, and from all walks of life. He didn't want to admit it but the excitement Duik exhibited was starting to fill him too.
Calista glanced at the monitor on the desk idly. Something popped up on the screen, a warning message from the anti-spyware program Amber had made.
"Aw, someone's trying to trace the message. Cute." The civet flexed her stubby paws and let them fly over the keyboard with an unbelievable speed.
"Not yet sweetheart. You'll find out everything in good time."
((mini post :) ))
It was a beautiful morning! The sun was shining, the birds were singing and a out right ten out of ten women lay in the bed next to a purple haired man. He had just woken up after a very good late night workout. Now he was simply enjoying the moment as he looked out a near by window while holding the women in his arms. After a few minutes like this however the women woke up and placing her hand on the side of her face kissed him rather deeply. "Oh hello beautiful." Ash said with a smile gladly accepting the kiss despite the morning breath. "Beatiful? Don't tell me you are one of those men that forget names and use adjectives instead." The women said with a sigh as she started to move away from Ash.
Ash gave her a charming smirk and placed his hand on her back suddenly having himself on top as he looked down at her. "My, Alex you hurt me so." He said with a grin as he started to softly kiss her neck. "Ready for another ground this early?" Alex asked with a small laugh finding the spot he kissed to be a bit ticklish. "Of course~ I prefer this over a morning jog~" He hummed as he was about to do more, however before he could his phone went off letting him know he had a text. Now normally he would have this phone on silent, especially around this time...but no... For some reason his phone was on max volume singing the opening song of my little pony when the test was received. At this a blush went over Ash's face before he immediately got out of the bed to turn off the phone hoping it wasn't too late. But Alas! The damage had been done.
Moments after he got out of the bed Alex got out as well and started to giggle. "Well I guess that was a sign wouldn't you agree?" She said as she started to dress. Ash was still blushing at this but hearing her words he let out an internal groan as he was having such a good time. However when he turned to face he simply gave her a charming smile. "Ah a true shame. It certainly was a pleasure to get to know you... If you want to hang out again just give me a call, next time I will actually give you dessert before we get distracted." Alex smiled and placed on her high heels before going over to Ash and kissing his cheek. "Without a doubt we are doing this again." She whispered in his ear before leaving.
He watched her go and once he was certain she was gone a tic mark went on his head. "FIE!!" He shouted as he stormed into the living room where a white monkey was hanging from the fan by his tail as he watched the cartoon. "Wha?" "My little pony!? Really! REALLY!?!??" Ash shouted as he glared at the monkey that grinned at him. "I was just reminding you friendship is magic~" Fie snickered as he brought his hands to his face. "I was creating plenty of magic till that text ruined everything! Where did you get the phone to send me the text anyway?" Ash asked as he let out a sigh obviously not truly angry with his little friend. "Oh that text? I didn't send it to you~ Keheh Alex had a password on her phone and I didn't feel like prying... Speaking of which...think she'll notice a hundred missing from her wallet." Ash facepalmed at this and went back to his room. "I didn't hear you say that... I'm going to take a shower. Don't break anything. I'm not paying for another hotel room." "Yes yes, whatever you say ashy~~" Fie said in a singsong voice as he kept hanging from the ceiling.
As Ash got cleaned up Fie got bored and started to snoop around the place and digging to see if he could stir up trouble. Soon he got his hands on Ash's phone and changed the sound of when a text was received once again. This time the sound that would leave the phone would be an erotic moan. "Kehehe Can't wait till he get's a text when he's with someone~" Fie giggled as he opened Ash's recent messages and looked at them . 'Oh? Another hotel? Ashy already got another date? Heheh This is a record!' Fie thought as he was about to delete the test but before he could he was picked up by the scruff of his neck. "Annd What are you doing?" Ash asked now in just pants, his hair a bit moist. Fie blinked as he looked at Ash before smiling. "Fruit ninja." He said with a smile making Ash roll his eyes. "Suuure. Hand it over." With a sigh Fie placed the phone in Ash's hand before he maneuvered out of his grip and climbed up his arm. "You got another date by the looks of it~"
Ash let out a sigh as he read the text. "Nope... Work we need to go t-" "I saw~ Hehehe It's right across the street nice job." Ash chuckled a bit and tossed his phone to his bed and got dressed. "Not across the street, its like.. eight blocks from here." He said as he tossed on his shirt and grabbed his vest. "You know what I mean... Let's get something to eat on the way!" Ash looked at Fie for a moment before nodding. "Sure I'm straving anyway."
With that he got fully dressed and grabbed his wallet phone and keys before looking around. "We got ev-" "Yups!" "You really got to stop cut-" "It's fun though! Kehehe." Ash sighed and shook his head before walking to the lobby so he could head off to the next hotel.
As the lobby became more and more crowded with various people from gender and age Zoe became more tense. At first she thought that this was but a coincidence... that they are here because they want to book their reservation for the night. But the more arrived with their companions the clearer it became they they were here for the same reason she was - and she did not like it one bit.
" What are these clowns doing here? " she hissed, anger flickering in her eyes.
" They art here probably why we art. " Eos replied.
" This has to be a sick joke! " Zoe retorted " Look at them! They are children! Buffoons! They have partied in their whole life, never seeing a real battle in their whole lives! They are the ones we are ought to protect, not the ones that look after others! "
Eos sighed.
" Once thou were the same. " he whispered silently.
" I was NEVER anything like them. Even back then I joined to serve... not to have fun you know. " she replied " These people know not what they are up against. "
The stag nodded and stood up, horror running through the face of Zoe.
" What are you doing? " she asked, mortified.
" Perhaps and introduction is in order, no? " Eos mused " They art our future allies if fate decrees so. We should welcome them. "
Zoe spat.
" I shall remain here, thank you very much. I will not interfere. "
Eos sighed but just shook his head and walked towards the merry people. It seemed that they had a very good time despite only meeting for the first time... well most of them anyway. It was time for him to meet these newfound allies... and to introduce himself. When he was in earshot of all of them he bowed his antlered head and spoke.
" Greetings and a warm welcome to all of thee. " he rumbled with his deep, booming voice " I am Eos, the white stag, it is an honor to meet you all. I assume that we are all here because we share a same goal - we have answered the summons of this... Watch. My heart swells with pride knowing that I shall unveil this mysterious call with all of thou together. "
He realized that he might have been a bit too formal... but alas it could not be helped.
The sound of air wrenches and air compressors could be heard from blocks around. The noise was comming from the only garage on the block and lately it seemed to be never ending. The locals didn't seem to mind, as at one time or another those inside the shop had helped them all in some way. It was a simple three lift garage, and each lift had a different car on it. The first was currently lower to the ground as the lift was broken, but the guys underneath didn't seem to mind as he hummed along to the sound of The Joker, by Mr. Steve Miller.
"Hey Jim! I need a 5/8's socket! Got a pan plug stuck."
There was no response to the mans call which caused him to slide from beneath the car. Greece covered the rugged face of the giant of a man the stood up and looked around the garage. Muscles that had been chiseled from years of manual labor under a white shirt sneered with liquids of a verity of different colors, but mostly black.
"Jimbo!! Where did you run off to ya lazy chim...."
A flash of silver was the only warning Simon had as the wrench came flying at him from a mass of fur sitting on a stool towards the back. The form moved, and the black and silver fur of Jimbo the gorilla walked a bit closer towards Simon holding up quite the lude gesture with his free hand. In the other was a phone that Simon had not seen before. There were a few words spoken between Jimbo and the phone before Jimbos gruff voice finished the call and hung the phone up.
"Damn it Simon that was an important call. Your lucky I had the phone otherwise I would have hit you with that wrench. Call me a chimp again and me and you are gonna go."
That only made Simon smile wider as he placed the wrench on the rolling table beside him and held up his fists, waving his hand to signal Jimbo to come at him.
"Let's go fuzz ball. You don't have any pipsqueaks around to save you this time."
Jimbo simply scoffed at Simon as he sat back down on the stool and motioned towards the phone.
"Later Simon, somethings come up. Something important."
Jimbo explained who he had just been talking to and what they had wanted, and the more he spoke, the more Simon looked like he wanted to hit Jimbo.
"Absolutely not!!"
Simon stormed away from the gorilla who looked utterly defeated by the mans response. Simon went to the rolling cart and began to rummage through the wrenches and screwdrivers before he found a small cylinder item and snapped it to a wrench and headed to van. He laied back on the rolling board and slid under the van without another word.
Jimbo reached up and began to message his brow a bit before he walked over on his knuckles to the van. He grabbed Simon's boot and pulled his friend out from under the van and looked down at him in exasperation.
"Simon, its been 5 years. You can't keep holding a grudge against The Watch forever."
Simon starred up at Jimbo and stuck the wrench in his hand out towards him.
"I can, and I will Jim. After Singapore I swore I would never go back to them for anything, and I stand by that."
Simon reached under the car and pulled himself back under the car with a quick motion. Jimbo crossed his arms and leaned on the van and looked around the shop. Ever since they had returned from The Watch, it was like Simon had been hiding in this shop if he wasn't at home with his brothers and sisters. Jimbo sighed and looked back down at Simon's boot as he worked.
"Simon, they have a Code Feral."
Simon's boots stopped moving for a moment, before the board and Simon began to roll back out from under the Van slowly. He pulled himslef up and leaned against the van as he looked up at Jimbo. His eyes meet Jimbos and after a long sigh, he pulled himself up off the floor and clapped Jimbo on the shoulder.
"Call Gile, get him to watch the shop. Then we can get back home, tell mom and the others and pack. I assume they are fixing us up somewhere. "
The trip did not take long at all. After Simon had explained where he was going to his family, packed his bags and said his good byes, they were on their way to New York City. As the pair of them approached the hotel, Simon holding his bag over his shoulder as they exited the cab. He sighed looking up and down the hotel, and followed Jimbo in to the lobby. Simon and Jimbo walked in and looked around at the others that had gotten there before him. He shifted the bag and dumped it by the door with a loud thud and crossed his arms over his chest before he looked back to Jimbo.
"Here we go again Jim."
Rin let out a sigh of relief at the wolf's response. He marvelled a little at his accent, but kept a mental note of it rather than point it out. Besides, as much as he worked on his accent, he didn't think he could ever be fully rid of it. He stood straight with a smile as he turned to a loud voice behind him. His eyes wide with surprise at the loud hyena he turned around to see. He began to back his way into the bar area he had originally intended on entering when a large white stag strode into the middle of the lobby and introduced itself. As much as he wanted to escape, his own code of honor, honesty, and a life full of manners being drilled into him forced him to stay and introduce himself as well. He felt Haku throbbing as she silently laughed at his current predicament. Rin stopped mid step and once again bowed, abruptly to jolt Hakuji from her laughter. "Hello, I am Rin Takeda. It is an honor to meet you master Eos." His voice was low, steely, and confident. "And I am Hakujin" She piped up, her voice was higher, a bit melodic as she finished her laughter and righted herself.
Swishing his tail back and forth, Laohu eyed a tiny creature that was right in front of him. His tongue licked his snout as he resisted the urge to pounce right then and there onto the creature. Surprise attacks are well . . adrenaline rushing and quite rejuvenating, if he must comment about it, especially when the preys didn't know what hit them. But, he decided to play a little cat and mouse kind of ordeal, finding amusement just staring at the grey looking mouse before him. After what seemed like years or centuries later, Laohu eventually was getting bored, so he gently stepped down from the Xiao Hui's bed, creeping slowly towards the oblivious creature. With light footsteps, Laohu slowly moved his way towards the mouse until he was three inches behind the mouse, his nose almost touching the mouse's back. For a large, white, tiger, Laohu's pawsteps would only be heard if he wanted them to be, having control of his weight and balance. He exhaled through his nose, letting the air touch the mouse's back as Laohu watched the creature shiver. He grinned a lopsided smile, showing his fangs as the mouse turned slowly out of curosity. "Hello, food." Laohu said, a deep rumbling resonating from his diaphragm, as if the grounds were shaking beneath him. Before the mouse could run away, Laohu already stepped on his tail, pinning the mouse down, and entrapping him in his frontal paws. The mouse began squeaking, panicing, and doing his best to get out of situation he was in, but failed. Picking up the mouse by the tail with his own claws, Laohu raised the mouse up to eye level, watching the mouse struggle against him.
However, before Laohu could do any damage, he heard footsteps approaching and felt that familiar presence bond closer than before.
Xiao Hui, he thought to himself, before placing the mouse down, letting the creature be free. "Go and be free mouse, you were lucky this time." At that the mouse scattered away quickly as possible, chattering away to himself to never come back. As the mouse disappeared, Laohu sat upright, letting his tail wrap around his frame as he waited for Xiao Hui to make an appearance. Slowly the door crept open, revealing a woman with a polite yet stern expression of her face. Her facade did not drop until her door was tightly closed and locked. Her back was facing the door, as she took a deep breathe, inhaling and exhaling. Worry creased her forehead as her lips formed a tight smile as she turned around, facing towards her animal companion, "Laohu?' Her soft voice echoed, as she raised up her head towards him in slight confusion, "What are you doing sitting there? I assumed you would be sleeping?" She said, questioningly as she made her way over to her companion, kneeling down next to him. As Xiao Hui kneeled in front of him, he stood back up on his paws and moved a step over to Xiao Hui, purring against her, giving her some warmth and comfort. "Nevermind that, what's wrong? You look . . conflicted." Xiao Hui blinked, never being able to hide her emotions from her companion. Closing her eyes, Xiao Hui nuzzled her head behind Laohu's head, hugging him closer to her. The only warmth Xiao Hui ever remembering receiving was always from Laohu and she was grateful for it. "Child," Laohu said, in a stern voice, rarely would he ever call Xiao Hui, "child", unless the situation calls for it. Though he doesn't admit it, he was much older than the young woman before him. "Tell me." He said , concern lacing his voice. Xiao Hui leaned back, gazing into Laohu's emerald green orbs, finding any sense of doubt or lies. It was a habit she grew into, staring into another person's eyes to see if she was being deceived or not. Laohu knew what she was doing, it was something she always did before she expressed herself. He would have thought he would have gotten used to it by now, but, it didn't. It still slightly made him hurt knowing Xiao Hui, after all these years, still had to find some sort of reassurance from him. But, he was patient with her, as he always was. Taking a deep breathe, Xiao Hui smiled softly, petting Laohu's head gently, before sitting in a better position. She used their mindlink, not wanting people to eavesdrop on their conversation. "我們需要離開." (We need to leave.) Laohu blinked, shocked wasn't even the word to describe his emotions. Leave? As in run away? Did she get into an argument? No, that's not like Hui. Instead of voicing out his thoughts, and assuming some more, he sat there, waiting for her to finish. She never spoke in their mother tongue, unless it was serious or it slipped because it made her grieve slightly.
"I was recruited by a government or some sort of organization for a job of some sort, they didn't specify. Money was involved and they request my presence in another country and state. I'm reluctant to go, yet I'm quite excited to leave." She said honestly, conflicted with her emotions. It scared her that she wanted to get up and leave her home town, sure, she had plenty of business trips, however, none of them made her heart beat quickly like the offer before her. She had just finished a meeting with the House of Orchids with her Father, when he requested her to stay behind and have a little "chit-chat". Usually chit-chats didn't mean anything "good". "Father and I went back and forth a lot, seemingly, I wanted to jump at the opportunity at a chance of another. . life. . another way out of the world I am in now." Laohu sat there, quite stunned yet proud of the young woman before him. She grew up. Never had she ever talked back to her father, or even argued with him. Xiao Hui was an obedient child, understanding, and did things to make her Father proud. But, for her to speak up against her Father was different. But, Laohu could see the restrictions she held herself in, he knew she felt locked in and trapped, stuffy, even. He could feel it in his heart, his soul, the constant battle raging in Xiao Hui's mind at the moment. "我們走吧." (Let's go), Laohu said with determination and fire in his eyes. Never was Xiao Hui a selfish person and for her to say her selfish desires, he wanted to do it, right then and there: leave. Before she changed her mind and revert back to the state she was in before: feeling caged. Xiao Hui's heart almost dropped and stopped at the same time. "W-what?" She asked, taken aback by Laohu's determined eyes. "There's no turning back after this, Laohu!" She hissed slightly and quietly, so no one else could hear their commotion. "You know the consequences of leaving without letting Father know. . . you'll die!" Laohu growled slightly, shaking his mane as he stood in a protective stance around Xiao Hui. "I know, but, right now, I can see it in your eyes. You want to leave and we are going. No ands, ifs, or buts. We're in this together." He said, leaving no room for excuses. He won't die, because it'll only cause Hui more pain than he could ever imagine. No matter what, Laohu was determined to leave and get her out of this forsaken place, safely.
Xiao Hui enveloped Laohu into another tight hug, thanking him over and over, as she let small teardrops fall from her eyes. She was running away. . this made her feel . . exhilarated. . open. . yet scared. . and fearful. When he finds her, they'll be consequences to pay, but for now, she'll trust her instincts and follow Laohu. Packing her things took only half an hour, seeing she only brought with her items that she needs, she would buy other things later. Xiao Hui had kept a secret stash of money with her, even going as far as to remembering the address of where the meet-up place was. The only time Xiao Hui and Laohu could sneak off would be 3AM and it was exactly 2:30AM at the moment. Usually, the switching of bodyguards takes a total of 5 minutes, leaving her with 5 minutes to escape, hopefully they wouldn't run into any trouble. Laohu was surprised at Xiao Hui, seeing how meticulous she was about her planning. He wondered how long had the thought of leaving plagued her mind to become so . . prepared. . Finally, the time arrived and they steathily got out of the room. They hadn't ran into any problems, that is, until the animal spirits came out. Many of them were loyal dogs who are good trackers for her House. Running into problems with them would cause a huge commotion, but thanks to Laohu's hearing and sense, they were able to pass them without leaving their scent behind. 4 minutes and a half later, they were almost near the door until voices were heard in the front gates. Xiao Hui recognized the two men: twins. Hao and Tao, who look absolutely identical, yet she could tell between the two. She didn't know how to get pass them without being seen. Biting her lip, Xiao Hui took a deep breathe and made herself known. She greeted them respectfully as they bowed their head. Taking that small moment of openness, she quickly used her two fingers and found their pressure points, causing them fall asleep within a blink of an eye. Laohu took this opportunity to run pass Hui, quickly closing the gates, as Xiao Hui hopped onto Laohu's back, running towards the station. She looked back once, with a tearful good-bye, and soon, turned her head forward as Laohu ran full speed ahead.
"We've arrived, it seems? I think?" She said, tilting her head slightly, quite confused as the layout of the state, wa sit called? She was in. If she had to be quite honest, she never knew how to work a cellphone. . much less any technological items, since well . . she had help from the other guards. Sometimes, Laohu would be able to help her with such a foreign tool. Comparing China and the States, the States definitely ran their government, technologies, and way of life way different than she was used to. But, then again, she came from a Traditional Chinese background that was actually different than the modern lifestyle. Nevertheless, she was always quite curious of Western clothing. Being brought gifts and seeing pictures were different than actually being there physically. The only place she had not stepped foot in was actually, the United States. She actually learned English when she was in UK, but even then, the two countries spoke a different dialect and had different words for different things. Laohu let out what sounded like a slight chuckle, as she shook his frame, stretching as he felt his paws on the ground. He scrunched up his face slightly, not liking the feeling of dirt on his paws. However, hearing Laohu chuckle at her caused Xiao Hui to pout? An expression she was never used to doing, unless she counted doing it when she was a child. Nevertheless, Laohu saw the considerable amount of change Hui had gone through within the time frame they had to before they arrived in New York in front of a Hotel they were meeting up at. She didn't seem too tensed, and gradually, Laohu hoped she would eventually begin to unravel herself and loosen the burden she holds on her shoulder. "We've made it, Hui." He looked up at Xiao Hui, speaking softly and proudly at the young woman before him. Blinking, Xiao Hui nodded, giving him a soft smile before she started walking towards the Hotel and into the lobby. Laohu kept his on his guard, keeping alert for any strange signs or wondering if where the meet-up was just a set up to lure his friend.
As Xiao Hui and Laohu made it inside, her eyes scanned the intricate designs, floorings, and interior decorations that she hadn't realized she would end up bumping into someone along the way. Laohu was about to warn Hui, but it was too late. The girl was too spaced out to notice a masculine, bulky man before her, before she collided into his back. Xiao Hui made a loud "oomph" as her feet staggered, making her lose her balance, quickly. Soon enough, she fell to the ground, with her luggage falling with her, making a loud "thud" noise. Xiao Hui hissed slightly, feeling a throbbing on her butt and nose. Looking up, Xiao Hui blinked, stuttering slightly, feeling the wind knocked out of her was not an everyday thing. She didn't have the energy to actually get up at the time, instead opted to divert the attention to the male in front of her and the gorilla? Tilting her head, Xiao Hui spoke softly,
"I-i'm so sorry. I . . I was entranced by the architecture of the room that I wasn't looking. . " She began explaining, as Laohu was by her side in an instant, nuzzling her head, whining slightly as he felt the throb Xiao Hui had felt and worried that she may have bruised herself.
Beth stepped inside, taking in everything with a scrunched-up nose. It was not her cup of tea, to say the least. Totus, on the other hand, was gazing around in satisfaction. If he was going to be confined to human structures, it might as well be a beautiful place like this. Beth shifted her backpack, which held all of her belongings, and reached for the paper that told her where to go. "I hope you know what we're doing," She muttered to Totus, receiving an offended churr in response.
She continued on, finding the proper room with relative ease and slipping inside. She had but a moment to look around the room when another woman approached her. Bright white hair, icy blue eyes, accompanied by what seemed to be a phoenix. Odd. Not only were aerial companions uncommon, hers was mythical. Beth blinked once, at the same moment Totus did.
"Hello. I am Totus, and this is Beth. Your accent shouldn't be a problem," He said in a friendly tone, mirroring the motion of her companion.
Beth opened her mouth to add to his introduction, but the sudden appearance of a hyena stopped her short. His companion was not far behind, and as the two of them spoke, the white stag that was paired with the girl in the corner also approached. Add another pair, and once everyone else had introduced themselves, Beth finally spoke up.
"Um. Im Beth, this is Totus. We didnt get an email, but we got this," She held up the manila envelope, "It was dropped off for us somewhere that no one should have known to leave it." She said, and Totus ruffled his wing feathers calmly. The girl glanced around her, a little nervous by the sudden increase in people, especially males. Totus settled lower on her shoulder, his feathers brushing her neck, reminding her he was there. She relaxed, almost visibly and her eyes slid around the room, wondering where the people who had gathered them were.
Leandra was distracted from the woman she'd approached when a hyena showed up, excited about her accent apparently. Not only that, he was immediately distracted from the idea of her being from Australia, as he noticed Luness calmly perched on Leandra's shoulder.
Grinning at the hyena's excited approach, Leandra shrugged off the man when he told 'D' to stop staring. "It's not a big deal. Frankly, we're quite used to getting looks. Well, the looks are usually at Luness, but whatever. I'll take what I can get."
Rolling her beady eyes at what Leandra said, Luness was about to add to what Leandra said when the man introduced himself and his hyena companion as Alec and Duik. Cocking her head at this, Luness didn't get a chance to respond before Duik was talking to Alec again about tracing an email. Was he talking about the same email that Leandra had received?
Meanwhile, Leandra went ahead and took Alec's hand, albeit she waited until after his conversation was concluded with Duik, since he was seemingly getting ignored by the increasing chaos around them as everyone made their entrances. Grinning despite the chaos, Leandra then said, "Nice to meet you two. I'm Leandra and if you didn't already catch it, my companion is Luness."
Hearing everyone introducing themselves, minus the woman sitting by herself in the distance, Leandra continued to grin, excited at seeing so many new faces in one place. Unlike her brother, Leandra loved to meet new people and learn about the different ways they grew up and how they live, especially where they came from.
Hearing a loud thud, Leandra looked sharply towards the sound only to see a large man standing beside a...gorilla? Considering her current companion, Leandra shouldn't have been so surprised...but still.
Luness suddenly perked up and Leandra recognized the look in her eye.
"Don't. Luness, whatever you're planning on saying...just don't."
Letting out a chortle of amusement, Luness fluffed up her feathers and then said with what could look like a grin for someone with a beak, "What? I was just going to say-"
Quickly grabbing Luness' beak and stopping her from speaking, Leandra raised an eyebrow at her and then let go of Luness' beak once she had decided to not say it anymore.
Letting out a small sigh, Luness then said,
"You're no fun."
Leandra rolled her eyes at this and said, "Trust me, Luness. Nobody was going to want to hear what you wanted to say. It would've been a mood-killing joke."
Before the pair could converse any longer, Leandra was distracted by a surprised yelp, only to see a woman walk straight into the large man and fall onto her rump. Ouch. That tile was most likely not overly forgiving.
Shaking her head in amusement at the growing party, Leandra glanced back at the woman she'd initially greeted, as she finally introduced herself. Well, the owl introduced himself and then his human companion. Odd. Normally it'd be the other way around, but whatever.
Smiling, Leandra opened her mouth to speak, but was cut off by Luness, who proudly puffed herself up and then said,
"Nice to meet you, Totus, Beth. I am Luness and this is my human, Leandra."
Blinking in surprise at this introduction, Leandra suddenly shoved Luness off her shoulder, making the phoenix fly in place before her while chortling, as Leandra blundered in her speech, "Y-your human!? What, am I some slave to you? What do you think this is? A partnership and nothing more!? You little...feather-brained..."
Before Leandra could continue, Luness fluttered past her only to calmly land on Duik's back, taking heed to avoid hurting him with her talons. Cocking her head at Duik, Luness then said sarcastically, "My human's exhausting me. I hope you don't mind if I take a break real quick."
Sighing and throwing her arms up exasperatingly, Leandra then said with a huff, "Fine, go play with the hyena we just met and ignore me, your loving human companion who kinda raised you from a young age."
Raising an eyebrow at Alec, Leandra then said to him with her arms crossed over her chest, "I don't suppose you have to deal with this kinda stuff from Duik too often, do you?"
While everyone was getting settled, or knocking things or even other people over, Manjano continued to stay in the bar area, as he drank the rest of his vodka while Falarion began to get increasingly agitated by the growing crowd in the lobby. Which of course wasn't helping Manjano stay relaxed at all, so now he was feeling increasingly agitated as well.
As he ordered a second drink, Manjano suddenly overheard the man, who'd nearly walked straight into him earlier, speak up over the growing noise to introduce himself and his faithful companion.
Letting out an irritated sigh, Manjano began downing his second drink almost immediately, hoping that nobody would come in here and ask him to introduce himself. It wasn't going to happen anyways, unless someone decided to introduce him...which his sister no doubt would try to do. Luckily, she was probably distracted by the nearest guy or girl she found to be attractive.
Scowling at the thought of his sister throwing herself at someone as per usual, Manjano raised his hand to order a third drink when Falarion began whining at him. 'You probably shouldn't let your first impression on anyone be of you getting drunk...'
Rolling his eyes and letting out a loud sigh, Manjano then muttered under his breath, "Fine, whatever."
After quietly asking for the receipt, Manjano then turned around on his stool to try and get a better view of the growing crowd in the lobby after the man with the sword had sporadically introduced himself to the crowd.
Maybe he could just listen to the brief or whatever from here and not even have to introduce himself to the team. That'd be brilliant.
Alec was please when he was greeted warmly by the girls he had approached, and Duik was even more enthusiastic than he had been before.
Upon Leandra's comment about staring Alec shrugged, adopting a nonchalant tone. "Hey, I can see three fine ladies from where I'm standing." He replied, including Beth in his comment about the phoenix and her human partner.
It was then a white stag approached, serene and graceful. It struck Alec that the stag either looked completely out-of-place, or he fit right in with the regal setting. He also noted what must have been the deer's partner, a slender, proud-looking woman offering them a glacial stare from across the room. He touched the brim of his hat in her direction, returning her judging gaze with a cheeky wink.
"Um, nice-eth to meetest...thee." Duik attempted to mimic the deer's formal way of speaking. "Pray what doesest thou think of the er, nice diggs...eth?"
Alec prodded him with a foot and the hyena shrugged with another grin.
Alec's attention was turned back to Leandra for a moment as she argued with the bird on her shoulder. He couldn't help but laugh. As the phoenix fluttered down to Duik's back he gave the girl a knowing smile. He could definitely relate.
"Humans, am I right?" Duik replied, looking over his high shoulder at the graceful bird. "Chill on my back as long as you want. Its not everyday I get to hang with a phoenix!"
Alec shot the hyena an unamused look. "'Humans' eh? You just remember who brushes your teeth at night."
He nodded at Leandra; "You wish they couldn't speak sometimes, but we can't really live without them can we?" Alec couldn't even imagine life without Duik now. He was as much apart of him as his heart, or his mind.
The loud clack of heels on the tiled lobby floor sounded above the gentle conversations. Agent strong appeared in the archway of a grand corridor, tablet in hand and a professional but friendly expression on her face. This was the type of person that captured attention just by walking into a room--Not for her size, she only stood about 5'4"--but for the aura of authority and decisiveness. From one look Alec could tell that this was the sort of person who got things done. When her gaze shifted to each of the gathered people there was no doubt in his mind that she had been sent for them.
"A warm welcome to you all." She said loudly, making sure to catch the attention of the room. Even the bellhops stopped what they were doing. Her hair was a deep jet-black and tied in a styled bun at the back of her head. Her fitted blazer and skirt were crisp and clean and made with angular pieces cut in black, white and grey. Though her eyes were dark Alec could have sworn they glinted with the faintest pink hue, like a cat's eyes when the light hit them right.
Her cheek and the base of her neck were decorated with small, barcode tattoos. The animal at her side came up to the middle of her shin and though Alec knew what it was Duik was completely baffled. The creature looked like a raccoon had tried to turn into a leopard, but got bored half-way through. Her hind legs and rump were tan and covered in sweeping black spots while her front half grew steadily darker, her face striped with a black mask. A thin line of long fur spiked up from the middle of her back and ran over her rump and down a pointed tail, making the animal's back half look much larger than her front.
"What are you looking at Chuckles?" The civet asked, though there was an amused tone in her voice, not a critical one. The hyena looked away pointedly.
"If you would all follow me." The agent turned and paused when she caught sight of Simon. Alec thought he caught recognition in her eyes and the faintest hint of...was that regret? In a flash however the reaction was gone and she turned on her heel to lead them into the secure room.
Alec shot a glance at Leandra, Beth and Eos as he began to follow, wondering if they had seen what he had.
"What was that about?" He asked quietly, turning back to catch another glimpse of the large man that had triggered it.
@DawnAntalios @Lioness075 @Flutterby
If anything it made him curious about the character on the steps, but he didn't have much time to dwell on it before a young woman bumped into him and fell backwards.
Duik, ever the hero turned and loped over to help.
"Hey, gravity works ok? There's not need to go testing it." He offered the young woman his shoulder to help her up, a smile playing on his dark, squarish muzzle. Looking back at Alec he noted his partner hadn't moved, nor had be stopped staring.
"Now who's rude." Duik shot, sticking out his tongue to emphasize the point.
@zCrookedz @crucialstar
Eos nodded gracefully with a smile on his expression as Rin and Hakujin introduced themselves. He found it entertaining how hard they tried to be respectful... it was truly a rarity nowadays but their etiquette was refreshing nonetheless. With a graceful smile he snorted.
" Well met, Rin Takeda, Hakujin. " he murmured " I am no master, thy words are kind but thou need not to address me like that. We art all but equals here, I am the one who is honored. "
As he turned his attention to Duik he erupted in a laugh as the hyena tried to mimic his speaking style.
" Thou art a funny one, Duik. I am glad that some of us still retains the child in their heart, always staying positive even in the strangest of situations. "
With that he fell into silence as he glanced back to the corner with anxiety. Zoe still did not move, she remained still and watched all of them with a deadly glare, her fury not subsiding at all. Eos was tired about her behavior but could do nothing as of yet... he knew how stubborn she could be when she refused to talk and it was not like he could change her opinion right now.
Zoe grunted as even more of the newcomers made their appearance. Her frothing anger still raged within her: she could not believe that this mission involved others as well - others like these people. She noticed how Leandra and Alec glanced towards her but she grinned with satisfaction as they turned away thanks to her menacing expression. It was already a bother working with these people... the last thing she needed was to interact with them.
It was then however when she noticed a woman up on the alcoves who immediately grabbed her attention. Unlike the others here she actually looked like someone from the military - and one who could unveil the reasons why they were here. Slowly and steadily Zoe rose from her seat and carefully made her way towards Eos to be in earshot for when the agent started to speak. As she walked she heard that they were supposed to be following her to the briefing room and with a sigh of relief she headed after her.
Eos noticed how she decided to join them and with a smile he spoke up.
" Ah, my friends, allow me to intro-... "
" That's enough, Eos. " Zoe replied coldly, interrupting her companion " Let us move, don't let the agent wait for us, we have no time for this. "
Eos sighed once again. Well, his companion surely knew how to make a terrible first impression, that was for sure. Just as he was contemplating how to save the situation Alec leaned closer to ask something. He did indeed notice the momentary pause in the agent's movements and when he looked to the direction to see why had caused it he noticed a bulky figure, a newcomer as well.
" Perhaps an old ally, he is. " he mused " Or perhaps... something more. "
He could tarry no longer as Zoe almost already vanished, following the woman so he hurried after her as fast as he could.
Rin smiled, he decided not to explain that it was his custom, out of respect. It would be better for him to slip away now, while Eos was distracted, as were the others. He sharply turned and stepped into the bar. The room was about the same size as the lobby, but due to the early time there weren't many patrons. So a lot of the chairs were still overturned. He took a seat at the bar, looking briefly across to see the young man he had nearly run over. He gave him a brief smile before turning his attention to the bar tender. The man behind the bar came over with a warm greeting. He seemed to not mind the large white snake that had slithered and coiled up on his bar. "A Manhattan, please" He ordered for himself, trying to ignore Hakuji's playfully scolding look. A look that made her look menacing to anyone not accustomed to the snakes slightly changing facial features. "What? No Ssake for me?" She asked feigning hurt in her voice. But a very shallow dish was set out next to her already, a small glass bottle of plum sake next to it. Rin poured her some as he awaited his drink. "Who are you to forget a face? As if we haven't seen him working in countless other Watch meeting locations." He muttered to her playfully. His drink was set next to him and he quickly drained the glass. He shook the fire from his throat and sinuses and asked for another. Big gatherings made him a little nervous, he looked again over to the young man and his wolf. "Again, sorry, my name is Rin." He said giving half a bow from his seat. At this point he heard a woman's voice in the lobby, she seemed to be ushering everyone in a different direction. With a sigh he slapped a 20 on the counter and scooped up his sword and Hakuji. "And now I must be off" He muttered aloud, grabbing his drink once Haku had positioned herself securely. He stepped into the lobby just in time to see everyone head out a different corridor and he began to pick up his pace to catch up
Leandra felt herself blush slightly when her flirting was returned by a compliment from Alec. Considering how long it'd been since she'd gotten the chance to meet new people, including new people who were hot and beautiful, Leandra couldn't be happier at the moment.
Listening to Duik attempt to communicate with the white stag in a similar manner to how he'd spoken, Leandra grinned in amusement and tried to stifle her laughter by putting her hand over her mouth and glancing to the side.
Hearing Alec's laughter at her amusing argument with Luness, Leandra glanced back at the pair and smirked after hearing Duik's response to Luness and Leandra's brief argument.
After all, Leandra was never one to take too much seriously, especially considering both Leandra and Luness had been merely teasing one another throughout that argument and it was mostly a ploy they always did to get closer to new friends.
Nodding at Alec's comments, Leandra replied with a grin, "I'm sure we can be just as annoying to them at times, as they can be annoying to us. But you're right, I don't think I could ever live without Luness." Pausing, Leandra then added with a genuine, soft smile, "After all, I wouldn't have been able to read late at night without Luness' light."
Before Leandra could think too much about her memories with Luness, a very professional looking woman entered the lobby with some odd looking companion. What in the world was that thing? Some confused ocelot breed or something?
Glancing back at the woman, Leandra was baffled by the barcode tattoos on her face and neck. What in the world were those about? And who would bother to get weird tattoos like that?
Speaking of tattoos, maybe Leandra should get one at the end of this mission or whatever to commemorate it. Or something. It'd be the perfect excuse to finally get one, plus she'd probably get paid plenty of money to be able to afford one.
Rolling her eyes at Leandra's thoughts, Luness then said quietly to her, "Tattoos are a waste of your money. Think bigger. Like, an unlimited supply of food at home."
Giggling at this, Leandra then responded while scratching at Luness' head, "I'm sure we could get the best of both worlds once we're paid."
Glancing back at the woman's odd creature, Leandra found herself staring similarly like Duik was and blinked in surprise when the companion spoke up, teasing Duik for staring. Immediately looking away, Leandra quietly whistled at Luness, who immediately flew back and perched on Leandra's shoulder without a word.
This was getting both interesting and a bit weird.
Hearing Alec's question, Leandra opened her mouth to respond because she'd definitely caught that, but cut herself short before she realized that Manjano wasn't with the group yet. Great.
Sighing, Leandra said quietly to those around her, "I'll be right back. I need to get my brother before we all meet up."
Brushing her way out of the group and jogging towards the bar area with Luness flying beside her, Leandra silently prayed that Manjano wouldn't argue with her. Hopefully he'd gotten a few drinks in him. As sad as it was to say, he was always more agreeable if he'd drunk something first.
Jogging past someone else exiting the bar area, Leandra could only muse at what lack of conversation the guy had gotten from her brother.
Manjano was more than displeased when the man, who'd nearly walked into him earlier, decided to join him at the bar. Great...just, great.
Falarion sensed Manjano's displeasure and let out a small whimper before wagging his tail slightly when the man sat down at the bar with them. 'We should introduce ourselves! He may be a valuable member of our new team! And he has a shiny sword!' Letting out a quiet bark after saying this, Falarion excitedly stood up before sitting right back down on his bar stool.
Shaking his head at this, Manjano signed the receipt and was about to get up to leave when he heard the man stop talking to his snake and decide that now would be a brilliant time to talk with Manjano. It just kept getting better.
Hearing the man introduce himself, Manjano was about to glare at him for even thinking this was a good idea, but was stopped when he overheard a woman's voice gathering everyone. That had to be his group, right?
Just to answer his silently asked question, the man rushed off towards the woman's voice and no doubt, the rest of the group.
Sighing, Manjano began to stand up with Falarion leaping down to join his left side. Just as he began to walk towards the exit, Leandra came jogging in and skidded to a halt before excitedly waving Manjano and Falarion over.
Sighing again, Manjano resisted the urge to roll his eyes, as he silently joined his sister's side and the pair quickly walked back out into the lobby in time to join the back end of the group.
Seeing someone's hyena companion helping a woman up after she'd clumsily fallen down, Manjano rolled his eyes, unable to resist this time. Was everyone in this group that clumsy? First, a man almost walked straight into him and now a woman had walked into someone else and caused herself to fall over?
The building was just as immaculate and ornate as the last time Simon had seen it. Though the crowd was a bit different this time, it seemed it was still made up of youths who had so much potential that hadn't been tapped yet. As Simon scanned the lobby, something familiar caught his eye, and even Jimbo could feel the steam coming off of Simon. A young man, probably about Simon's age, stood next to a woman who's face and posture were all to familiar to him. His gaze did not linger to long as he had to turn way and look in the opposite direction of the group. Jimbo brushed up beside him and nudged him with his broad furry shoulder.
"Wow, wasn't expecting to see her here right off the bat. Things must be worse than they said."
Simon sighed as he fixed his bag over his shoulder a bit more and tried to ignore what Jimbo had said.
Simon was watching several people and animals mingle when he felt something bump into him. Turning around he found a young woman sitting on the ground who seemed to be in a bit of a daze. Simon smiled as she tried to hurriedly apologize for the accident and he began to laugh.
"No need for apologizing, this place can be quite a mesmerizing site for those who have never seen it before."
He held out his hand to the girl but just as he had, a Hyena came over and began to offer assistance as well. Simon smiled at the both of them and looked up just to see the face of a very large cat come up next to the girl and begin examining her. Simon recoiled his hand faster than lightning and leaned back away from the girl a bit. He assumed this was her partner , and if so he definitely didn't want it to think he had just caused the girl to fall.
The Hyena made a short comment about being rude and Simon cleared his throat a little before answering.
"Ah, the girl seemed to be in a state of aw when she entered and we collided. I'm Simon, Simon Sinclair. I apologize for the run in."
Jimbo had taken several steps back when the Tiger appeared and was watching with a furrowed brow from a bit further back. This would probably seem rude to most, but once people got to know Jimbo they would realize, Jimbo just has severe resting-bitch-face.
Beth watched the conversation fly between the others, silently mulling over their interactions. At one point, Totus nipped her ear lobe, wanting her to jump in and talk with them, but she ignored him and gave a shrug of the shoulder he was sitting on. They didn't speak to each other directly, out loud or through their minds. Words between the two were very rare, as they didn't really need them to understand one another.
Suddenly, Totus pivoted his head. He had heard something. A few seconds before the sound reached everyone else's ears, Beth turned and began looking for what her owl was alert to. She was already looking at the archway when the woman appeared. An unfmiliar creature was paired with her, and odd, industrial looking tattoos adorned her neck and high on her cheek. Her authority radiated around her, and Beth shrank away a little, while Totus puffed up. He was a proud creature, that wanted his girl to be noticed, while Beth wished to blend in. She watched the woman very closely, catching an odd exchange of glances between her and a male with a gorilla by his side. The look on her face bordered on guilt, and he was, for lack of a better word, furious.
"He's here for the job, but he's older than we are. He's been called for a different reason than the rest of us." Beth commented to Alec, as she shifted her backpack to be more comfortable walking. Eos weighed in, with a very interesting thought, giving them an idea.
"An old ally indeed, but a bitter one. If she recruits people for the jobs, and they know each other, perhaps she recruited him before. And if she's guilty, and he's angry, I would guess it did not go well." Totus continued her thought, as well as if it were his own.
"But if he's so angry, I'm more worried about what would bring him back, than what drove him off."
"Assuming they really do know each other in a professional capacity."
"We could be totally wrong. Maybe they just slept together and she left without saying goodbye." Their shared idea came from them as if from one person, but when Beth turned her green eyes to Alec, Totus didn't move his eyes from the woman. Beth shrugged, one corner of her mouth lifting into a smirk, adding, "But she seems a little too emotionally frigid to care about leaving a lover lonely."
They both blinked, and Beth shifted her bag again and glanced at Lea as she excused herself to find her brother, wondering if he would have the same striking appearance and a rare companion. They seemed to be an odd group, but they must all have a role, if this organization wanted them so badly. The girl began following the woman, even though her gut told her it might be better to walk the other way.
Vera woke to a muffled yawn, blinking her half seeing eyes open, the young woman saw a scaled blue snout stare up at her. ”Morning Mal…” she murmured before averting her gaze briefly to the ceiling. She needed to repair her all but demolished sleep schedule. Early mornings and late nights, searching for some form of employment was a pain seeing as most people were superstitious about mythical animal companions. I mean, Malik was practically harmless but society apparently didn’t see him that way.
Swinging her legs off the bed, she stood into a stretch, the small dragon rolling comically onto his back. Flipping onto his stomach, he stretched much like a dog. Spreading his wings briefly as Vera headed towards the kitchen and he he bathroom. As she began to start her day, her companion went about his as well by getting the bathroom first whilst she began cooking breakfast.
As the greasy aroma of frying bacon filled the apartment, Malik flapped lazily over to the counter, a small washcloth set atop his head. Laying the cooked pig as well as some eggs on two plates, Vera leaned on the counter as they ate. She was about to spark a conversation before her cell phone began to ring. Walking over to where it had been charging the night before, she swallowed her current mouth full while answering.
The next few moments caused he food she had swallowed to become lodged in her throat. Malik cocked his head as he casted her a confused glance. Once she had hung up, it took her a second to process the information given. But as soon as she had, the young woman ran off to the bathroom with Malik right behind. Blowing through the door and turning on the water, she waited eagerly for it to warm. ”Uh...Vera. What’s w-wrong?” The dragon asked in a worried tone as he adjusted his glasses upon his muzzle. Looking down at him, she replied in a hasty manner. ”Get the dishes washed and be ready to go in 10 minutes. We apparently have gotten chosen by The Watch recruiters.”
And exactly 10 minutes later, Vera and Malik perched upon her shoulder were out the door. Walking at a speed that threatened to to break the barrier into a run, she neared the door of the hotel. Opening the door, she slowly entered seeing that she was a bit late. Malik not being all that fond of large or even small crowds crouched down, not wanting to be seen.
"No need for apologizing, this place can be quite a mesmerizing site for those who have never seen it before." The male before her spoke, laughing at her clumsiness. Xiao Hui's cheeks began to turn red at hearing someone laughing at her. She pouted slightly at the man. As he was reaching out towards her, he jumped, recoiling his hand faster than she could respond. Xiao Hui blinked, wondering what could make him react in such a way. However, as she observed the male's features she looked towards where his eyes moved to: Laohu. "Yes, Hui, the man and his gorilla is scared of a big ol' cat like me." Laohu said, grinning slightly, having fun teasing the man and his companion. But before Xiao Hui could say anything, a woman's strong and demanding voice echoed in her ears, interrupting, causing everyone to look the woman's way. Hush, Laohu, be nice. A gathering? So, she wasn't the only one there for the recruitment." She scolded and mused to him through the mind-link. Laohu's ears perked down slightly as he stayed silent by her side. Xiao Hui didn't like knowing that there would be more people as she eyed the room full of people, especially without her knowledge. Nevertheless, she recognized the tone of the woman's voice: one full of power and strength. Xiao Hui stared at the woman, she was once in those shoes, a voice that could demand attention just by speaking, a leader. However, soon, the tattoo embodied around the woman's neck piqued her interest, "Barcodes?"
On the other hand, Laohu's ears were perked, turning his attention towards the oddly distinct female animal before him. He was quite curious, as his tail swished around side to side. He chuffed slightly as a friendly gesture saying
"Hello". Laohu found the animal. . a bit odd to see, since well, it's his first time encountering one. But, he found himself chuckling, or what sounded like a chuckle, when he heard the female animal making a comment to the hyena across from where he stood. Xiao Hui turned to Laohu, eyeing him for being rude, making Laohu stop immediately. However, he couldn't shake the nagging feeling in his stomach when he wondered why all of these people were here just for one job. "Hui, I don't like where this is going, especially since there wasn't much information about this. . job." As the woman finished talking, Xiao Hui observed how briefly the woman's eyes glanced towards the man's eyes, showing an expression of guilt, while the male before her was showed an bitter and irritated expression. "I know, but, there's something going on and I'd like to know." she said to Laohu as he looked at her curiously.
Soon, the crowd starting walking, following the woman. But, before Xiao Hui could get up herself, she heard a voice next to her that wasn't from the male before her.
"Hey, gravity works ok? There's no need to go testing it." Xiao Hui blinked as she laughed lightly, smiling at the hyena next to her. Laohu growled lowly, not liking how close the hyena was close to Hui. However, Xiao Hui ignored Laohu's protectiveness as she slowly got off the ground, using the hyena's shoulder for support. "Thank you. I'll try not to make a habit of testing gravity again." She teased giggling a bit. She didn't know why, but the nickname "chuckle" for the hyena suited the animal, maybe because he lifted up her mood in just a few seconds. "Now who's rude." The hyena said, turning back towards another male. Tilting her head, Xiao Hui turned her head slightly over in the direction he was looking to, realizing the man must be his partner. "Hi." She said softly, waving towards him, feeling slightly . . uncomfortable? No . . something else. . that she didn't know. .under the gaze of the hyena's partner. However, her attention was taken away when the male before when she heard someone clearing their throat. Giving the attention back to the male she bumped into, Xiao Hui nodded, agreeing to what the male had said with her being in a state of awe. Soon, he introduced himself as she shook her head, "You weren't being rude, Simon. It's a pleaure to make your acquaintance. And you shouldn't apologize, it was my fault." She said politely before continuing, "I'm Xiao Hui and this is Laohu." She finished, introducing herself to Simon as Laohu gave a small chuff again, as a greeting towards him and his animal companion. "What about you two?" Xiao Hui asked, turning her attention towards the hyena and his partner. However, soon, Xiao Hui looked around, noticing they may be behind if they don't follow the crowd, she spoke up gesturing towards the others, "Shall we go? We don't want to be left behind right? What was that saying again . .?" She pondered, tapping her thumb on her chin, "Oh! That's right, last one is a rotten egg!" She exclaimed, quite proud of herself for remembering the phrase. Xiao Hui quickly got her belongings together signaling the four of them behind to follow as Laohu trotted besides her, alert and on his guard, not liking this one bit.
"Yeah, you weren't being rude," Duik chimed in after Xiao, smiling his toothy smile at Simon and the big gorilla beside him. "I was talking to my partner Alec."
Alec cleared his throat and held up a hand in greeting to the both as he was singled out, then he quickly motioned for Duik to follow. He didn't want to be left behind.
The room they were led to was just as elegant as the rest of the place and as Alec stepped inside he could see a grand mahogany table set and filled with an early lunch. The air outside was chilly and traces of last week's snowfall could still be seen on the edges of the sidewalks, but in here it was warm.
When the woman who had brought them in turned she gestured to the table.
"Please make yourselves at home." And even as she said this she pulled a handle to lower a projector screen down against the far wall. The lights dimmed slightly as if on cue so the group could enjoy the food and listen at the same time.
Duik decided to stay by Simon and Xiao, they were interesting, he found himself liking them both instantly. He shot Laohu a friendly smile as they walked in together. "You guys don't seem like you're from around here." He observed as he chose a seat at the table and pulled a bowl of crackers closer to himself with one paw, before plunging his muzzle into it however he thought for a moment and pushed the bowl in the direction of Jimbo. "Snack?"
Alec stayed just apart, looking about the room he decided he liked the look of pretty much everyone there. It may not have been clear before but he could certainly feel a similar spirit in all of them, though he couldn't begin to explain why.
The first slide displayed the logo of the watch, an angular, stylized human eye with the head of a dog or a wolf equally stylized within it.
"My name is agent Strong." She began in an official tone. "I am a chief recruiting officer for the Watch and I'm here because you have been selected as candidates for a very unique team."
Saying it stung a little, Amber hadn't always been primarily a recruiter, that demotion had happened after...no, she had a job to do.
The slide flicked to a different image, this depicted the identification photo of a large brown bear staring seriously into the camera.
"Three days ago an agent of ours vanished under quite worrying circumstances. This is Boris, partner to another agent of ours working on a special case."
"What sort of case?" Alec asked calmly. He knew this game, revealing as little information as possible about the task to protect the higher ups and to minimize potential leaks.
"That for the moment, is classified. What we have gathered you here for is this; if you accept the job you will be following up a lead we have on a contact that may provide more information as to Boris' whereabouts. It is crucial that we find him."
"What about his partner?" Duik asked. A bonded animal's partner was the closest contact they would ever have. To Duik it was impossible to imagine that the bear would keep something from them.
Agent Strong paused, her eyes flicked cautiously to Simon, as if she could predict his reaction.
"Boris' partner was found the morning after his disappearance...deceased."
She let the words hang in the air for a moment, letting what that meant sink into the gathered minds.
"This is by no means enforced, however I must ask that those of you who do not feel that this job would suit to leave the room immediately."
After this and a stiff look from Calista the pair waited to see if any would stand.
((Sorry, this had to be super quick because I have work, but I couldn't leave y'all hanging xD I'll try to fix it up when I get a moment later today. *edit, and I missed my train this morning (through no fault of the rp), so...now I have time to make it better!))
