Futuristic Brain Burger

Tony held up her hands, both palms out. "Wait a minute. What does this have to do with what happened in the gym the other day?"

He placed a hand on her shoulder and chuckled. ".. It's a good thing that Norman and the others went and got these clothes then, ain't it?" He commented, smiling a humored smile at her. (@Soul OMU)
".. Because I tried... Every single day... To be a 'good older brother'. And I suppose when I heard that I just--.. I don't know... I just gave away..." He whimpered softly, wiping his eyes with both shaking hands. (@firejay1)

"As far as I'm concerned. As soon as it gets the slightest bit cold and there's snow, it isn't as good as it could be." he said with a grin creeping across his face. He was that Floridan(?) that loved it warmer then what most people are comfortable at.

"Oh gosh." Tony had had no idea that her words would have that kind of impact on Norman. She grabbed his still-wet hands in her own, smaller ones, looking him straight in his eyes. "You are a good brother, Norman. I wasn't saying you weren't. I was just trying to tell you you don't need to make Clay, and me, and Ash, and everyone else here your responsibility as well!" She sighed and closed her eyes in exasperation, just about ready to facepalm. "You brothers are so much trouble. You both think you need to be in complete control to be worth anything." She smiled at him, slightly. "How do you think the rest of us get along not being super-macho leaders all the time? Just fine. Besides, you both take me too seriously. I'm just a kid, remember?"

He looked away but squeezed her hands in response, taking a deep breath for trying to calm himself down. ".. I'm not thinkin' I need to be in control... Or--.. Anythin' like that, Tony... I like lookin' out for people, yeah... I didn't want it to look like I was tryin' to be the macho hero or anythin' like that, I just... You all make me happy, Tony... I know I ain't been as friendly with you as I've been wish Clay and Asha, I know I've been all 'mister big man' and 'mister dickhead leader' with you, and... I'm sorry for that, okay? Since you first got here..." He paused and cracked a faint smile, shaking his head and blinking heavily as he looked across the room. ".. I remember, when I first spoke to you on the radio and all that, and when you got here, I got the whole attitude and sorta' got looked down upon, it felt like. But... Somehow, as much as that upset me, I just... I kept going, because--.. I don't know. You all started to mean somethin' to me, and that time in the church with Clay... I thought that fucker was gonna' stab him, I as shoutin' and screamin' at this guy to get him to look at me. And when he came and stabbed me it was a bitter-sweet sorta' pain, because... that gave Belinda enough time to cut me free... And I stood up, and right as the guy was about to bring that knife down into Clay's chest, I shot him... I put a whole damn magazine in him, and I hate to sound crazy, but it felt so damn good." He stopped and chuckled for a moment, removing his left hand from her right and wiping his eyes, a smile forming on his face.

"I ran up... I untied Clay, and he sat up and just hugged me after that... We were both bawlin' after we both almost died, but then it took a turn. I cracked one'a my shitty jokes and we spent about five minutes just laughin' our asses off, and all the times he'd given me sarcastic comments and all that - I just didn't care, because nowadays you just gotta' hang onto those little things that make you happy. Like Asha, when he first got here I swear he was scared to even lift a foot off the ground, but then almost two weeks later he just... God. He was so damn happy and confident and... Optimistic. And it was when I saw him like that that I just... Damn, I just felt so... 'Warm', I guess. Just seein' his look on his face when I gave him some involvement and responsibility, or when I praised him or gave him a high-five for doin' a good job. Just lookin' at his smile just made all my problems and worries just melt away, because I realized then, that through all the damn struggles and trust-issues we went through, I realized I was livin' with some wonderful, wonderful people that sort of just made me feel more... Better... About the world we live in now." He squeezed out some final tears and wiped them away as he turned back to look at her, the faint but warm smile on his face.

"And then there's you... Society and myself don't view you as a kid. You're a teenager, but also as a lot of people would call you - A 'young woman'." He stopped and chuckled for a moment. ".. I don't know what exactly about you made me happy. It mighta' been your confidence, your knowledge, hell, your bravery - you're one'a the most brave people I've met, and although I've been nice, I just never really showed you enough appreciation or responsibility that you shoulda' had, and I'm really, really sorry for that..." He paused and looked around, smiling while doing so. The depressed look in his eyes just seemed to have gone away now. ".. The only thing I've done for you for me to have the right to ask a favor was respect what you said and just really... Let you get on with it." He chuckled again. ".. But today after we've had breakfast, instead of all the 'We need to talk business' and the 'I'm tellin' you to do this' crap, would you--.. Would you just come on a walk? Just for ten, fifteen minutes? Just come on a walk with me so we could just chat and not have to worry me bein' the 'Mister Big Man'?" He asked hesitantly, smiling at her while using his right, lightly-trembling hand to keep hold of her small left one. He gave that wink right there and then. The old, friendly and poor-joke-spewing Norman was back, and she knew that just by the wink. She could understand that by all of what he was saying, he just really did care about them. He didn't want to invade their lives with the 'Norman way', he just cared about them and being around them and talking to them made him the confident and friendly person that he usually was. (@Soul OMU, @Beowulf)

"Eating the yellow stuff? The Holocaust?" Conner said jokingly. He wanted to know what this boy was up to. But he knew that he wouldn't know until Nathan revealed his mischeif.

".. Gettin' stabbed." He said, chuckling softly to him thereafter and sipping his coffee. "You were close, though. Kudos, man." He said, smiling at him. (@Beowulf)

She rolled her eyes and let go of his hands. "I don't really care that you gave Clay and Ash more attention than me. In fact..." she hesitated, then laughed at herself. "Actually, I felt like you were trying to take my place." Pausing for a second, she cocked her head to the side, then reached over and slapped her palms gently against his cheeks, not hurting him. "Of course I'll take a walk with you, as long as you don't start getting all "I wanna be your new father" thing." Tony laughed lightly, then leaned in close, conspiratorially, "Here, I'll tell you a secret. Between Ash, Clay, and me, we have a little saying we took from the best movie ever, though Clay's never going to admit that. It's "Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind." That's what we've been living by, the the three of us, for the past month. Hope you'll forgive me for getting all protective about my place in there." Sitting back again, she crossed her arms. "I do think you were paying more attention to us than anyone else for a while, especially when Nathan needed you, but I guess we all kind of got caught up in the rush." The girl shrugged her shoulders, then smiled lightly. "Thank you for giving Ash the teddy bear. He loves it."

"Yeah, I know I paid a lotta' attention to you, but... Nathan wasn't exactly speakin' to me either at the time, and that really put me down, y'know? And I wasn't tryin' to take your place, for Christ sakes..." He shook his head and chuckled. "Jesus... All this time, you thought that?" He shook his head again and slowly rose to his feet, smiling. "And Lilo and Stitch. That was one'a Nathan's favorites when he was younger, I watched it with him one weekend. I remember, he cried at the scene where Lilo kicked Stitch out." He chuckled again, looking towards the door. "And I ain't gonna' be gettin' up in your grill with the 'I want to offer you my position as a father' and all that bullshit. I just want you to know I'm here, okay? There ain't dozens of people around here that you can talk to about anythin', but remember if you ever need to talk about... Whatever. I ain't gonna' judge." He said he walked over and set a hand on her shoulder once she stood up, taking a relieved deep breath. "And about the teddy bear. I knew he'd like somethin' like that - Every kid his age does." He smiled simply at her. He sighed and looked up. "With all that bein' said and all the misunderstandings bein' cleared... Think it'd be too much to ask for a hug right about now?" He asked with a sort of 'you-know-you-want-to' friendly grin, alongside a quick signature wink while spread his arms open a little. (@firejay1)

(@Beowulf, I replied, by the way.)

Tony laughed. "Only if you promise not to start throwing random stuff away and drawing lines on the table again!"

She went up to him and gave him a big hug. Then stepped back, dusted off her hands and announced. "Hug quota for the day, fulfilled." She followed it up with a wink, so he knew she was joking. "Now I'm going to go get Clay and Ash and head down to the kitchen for some breakfast."

"Not without me unlockin' the door you ain't." He chuckled and walked over to her. ".. I'll throw some frank'n'beans in the microwave for us. And when we head out make sure you dress up in those clothes I gave you, it's gonna' be colder than a yeti's asshole out there." He said with a wide grin as he unlocked the door and swung it open. (@firejay1)

"You know what else is worse, Conner?" He asked with another grin before finishing off his coffee and placing the cup down; he discreetly reached down and scooped up a snowball on the side of him that was not in view for Conner. (@Beowulf)

Tony's eyebrows shot up. "A yeti's asshole? That's a first." Then, she walked out, got both Ash and an ever-increasingly lazy Clay out of bed and dressed in the warm clothes he'd set out for them, and took them down to the kitchen, where Norman was waiting.

"I don't know what is worse." Conner replied, not noticing the snowball being made. All his attention was on the streets and occasionally the roofs. "A zed biting you?"

He served up four plates of frank'n'beans and placed them down with a fork in front of them all once they'd sat down; they instantly saw that whatever state he was in before had vanished, and it was the old Norman they knew so well serving them breakfast. He gave the signature wink and nod to Clay, the friendly notion he normally greeted Clay with. He still couldn't get over how Clay had began to inherit his accent and way of speaking - thinking about it just tickled him on the inside; he gave a warm smile to Asha as well.

"Mornin', boys." He said to them as he sat down at the other side of the table, starting off on his own breakfast. (@firejay1)

---

"Nah, nah. Tennis-ball sized hailstones." He said as he quickly turned and pelted the snowball at the side of Conner's head, knowing that the hat he was wearing and/or the hood of his coat would stop it from causing any pain. He instantly jumped up and backed away, laughing quietly. It'd be the first time Conner had really seen him look genuinely happy about being outside. (@Beowulf)

Conner turned and raised a fist threateningly before setting it back down. "Oh ya, you know what's worse then that." he paused for only a second before quickly getting up to chase after Nathan. "Getting your head burried in the stuff." he said as he tried tackling him to do just that. But he didn't really try, he was just messing around with the kid, not bullying him.

He bursts out into laughter as he ends up lying in the snow. "Try me, I dare ya'." He said to him, grinning up at him while holding onto his coat. (@Beowulf)

Scooping up a handful of snow, he tosses it into Nathan's face before getting off of him. "You know I could of done it." Conner said with a small smirk on his face. "We should finish up our drinks before they get cold. Doubt Lizzy would appreciate it." he continued as he picks up his coffee and takes several large gulps.

".. Mine's already done..." He said as he spat the snow out of his mouth and wiped it from his face. ".. Ahh... God, it burns..." He said as he wiped his face a few more times, still laughing regardless. (@Beowulf)

"How can something cold burn?" Then he thought about it, "On second thought, I don't want to know or find out." Now Conner was openly grinning as he drank the rest if his coffee. "Hey, I don't want to be rude or nothin' but I'm starting to worry about your brother. He hasn't been eating much, and he doesn't want to get out of his office," thats what he calls it, " You have a clue what gotten' into him?"

".. Eh... I'm not sure... He'll be fine, though. He used to get like that sometimes before all this happened - He'd lock himself away in his room and just sit there for a while. He'll come 'round soon enough, don't worry. I'm gonna' go talk to him soon, anyway." He said with a nod. (@Beowulf)

"Alright." was all he said. He knew his brother more then Conner did. So, he could believe what he said about Nathan going into these states before the apocolypse. "Hey, when you go down, take the mugs to get washed. I'll do them."
