Yeah he did, but the manga never actually stated what it was. However, it appears Horikoshi appearantly mentioned his hero name being "Ground Zero".

I mean isn't Ground Zero just a general name for the impact zone of any leveling disaster? I took it to be connected to the fact that he causes explosions.

Correct. Although not perfectly. It isn't restricted to a leveling disaster. It's really just a general term for the epicenter of an event. It can be used for virtually anything. London was Ground Zero for the zombie virus that wiped out humanity. Your house was ground zero of the noise complaints. Etc etc. Has nothing at all to do with 9/11.
