Lana merely gave a nod at Edzan's comment, she knew it had to have been coming. Despite literally having a deformed body that basically acted as a swiss army knife of maneuverability, that very same swiss army knife was undoubtedly a pain in the ass when it came to certain moving conditions. Folding her arms, she turned her attention to the course while grumbling a bit. Lana supposed she should be grateful, she found her performance painfully average. Painfully average doesn't get you anywhere in a class like this, it get's you nothing but shame and embarrassment. Luckily for her, Lana was adept in both of those fields. Slowly but surely, she began inching away from everyone else as the group of students beside her began increasing.
Tightening her arms, she tried focusing on the course. Not much to see, plenty of them being just as average as expected, struggling here or there or just making a fool of themselves like Alice. By the time everyone was done Lana was practically begging for class to be over so she didn't have to suffer the proximity of such miscreant failures. But she would hold strong, she had to.. for Maize. Thinking of her idiotically optimistic smile made Lana crack one of her own, yet it quickly evaporated as Paris finally managed to catch up with them. Lana had forgotten that she was even missing. Hadn't she been sent out before they even started the obstacle course..? Yes, and now she would get a pass because of her pitiable exterior.
Paris's turn on the Course was a fumbling mess that Lana couldn't help but smile at. Every trip, every stumble, every embarrassingly awkward pause was cataloged and enjoyed to its fullest extent. It was almost as good as Miles getting football kicked... almost.
By the time Paris was dragging herself over to them, Edzan began speaking about something that Lana couldn't have expected. Payment..? He was willing to pay them just to behave and follow orders? Lana had to do a double-take before casting her glare over the rest of her classmates. Had they really been such a general menace that he felt the need to bribe them into behaving? No... no that couldn't be it. This was all pre-made... did he just expect them to be terrible? Lana couldn't wrap her head around that. What Lovecraftian nightmares could these teachers have gone through to have them literally paying students to behave?!?
And it was all out of pocket!
Lana shook her head, this was absolute lunacy! Madness! She turned her head to her classmates, for once not being able to trust her internal thoughts to help her react accordingly. She actually wondered how others were taking it, they'd have to see it for a joke as well, right? It was stupidity... stupidity the likes of which she wouldn't tolerate! She wasn't like one of these walking disappointments, she didn't need to be bribed into performing well. This money could've gone to someone else, someone who was actually passionate about being a hero. Not a fake reject like her, not someone who-
And then she actually felt the envelope in her hands.
All of her thoughts ground to a halt as one pair of hands held the envelope in front of her, thumbs tracing the outline within. A whole sixty dollars... just for being better than her dim-witted classmates. Slowly opening the envelope, Lana pulled out the card with her third hand and looked it over. She steadied her breathing, reminding herself that money wasn't to be taken for any kind of symbolic meaning. It was perhaps the most blatant example of superficiality, one that benefited those who knew how to tame it. Her inner thoughts were interrupted by the sound of something ripping. Casting her gaze to the side, she found that Alice had ripped her own envelope in half before storming off.
The sight made Lana nod to herself. Of course the weak-willed masses wouldn't be able to understand the importance of what they'd just been given. She should've expected the mindless animal to throw away any potential benefits immediately, it was just her nature to ruin herself. Just as it was in Lana's nature to immediately glance down to the torn envelope, briefly wondering if the card within had survived. She stomped on those thoughts before they could go further. Even if it had it wouldn't look good to immediately ask for Alice's discarded money. Edzan would just have to figure out on his own how much of a lost cause she was. And from how things were going so far? That wouldn't take long.
Taking the card, Lana approached Edzan once the bell had rung. Quietly, she gave him a small bow coupled with a curt, "Thanks." before turning and making for her next class. She would accept this bribe, regardless of how necessary it was. If she was going to get kicked out within a few weeks she might as well get some spending done before then. Besides, perhaps such things would keep people from abusing the school so much. She paused, briefly glancing back over the field and the course to spot that broken mirror in the distance. As the wind blew through her hair, she silently promised Window-Kun that his time of suffering would be short.
As she was standing there, she noticed Paris passing by on her way to class. The sight of her reminded Lana of just how terrible her course run had been, and she found herself smiling once more.
Folding her upper arms behind her back, Lana scuttled next to Paris. This was a perfect chance to engage in social interaction, to begin her training. She was in a good ol' superior mood, this one wasn't much for standing her ground, Lana had the advantage. She was about to explain how humorous her cavalcade of failure was, but she stopped herself. She had to talk without sending the little moron to therapy, so pointing out her blatant flaws was off the table.
She could say that it was funny, but that could probably backfire in a similar manner. It would have to be a compliment of some manner, which was no problem. A compliment was just the opposite of an insult, right? So in the end, she matched Paris's pace and kept her eyes looking ahead. And as they approached the school building, she issued a simple, "Congratulations, you didn't fail badly." before nodding to herself. Perfection in it's honest simplicity.
