I feel like simply selling Luffy as just stupid, and that being the only reason you don't want to play him is a bit...shallow?
He's charming and unpredictable on top of that. He's a genius in terms of combat, as well. I think his positive qualities outweigh his negative, personally and it's at least worth a shot playing him.

I have a reputation for having had played joke characters for a long time, and he's far from just a dumb guy. That's all I'm sayin'.

I am fully aware of his positive qualities but there are things I want my character to do an be that I can't do with Luffy because it won't fit his character. Besides, if I tried to play him it would feel wrong. I'm not really sure how to best put it into words, but it's the same feeling I get for when I'm naming a character. I can come up with any number of decent names, but if it doesn't feel right then I can't use it.
